Yes, u can play the song any way u want to, substitute chords, etc. HOWEVER, playing it on your own for expression, and giving a tutorial to teach others are 2 different things. Nate is specifcally talking about the youtube piano teachers who are teaching the songs to people. I think they (teachers) have a responsibility to be as true to the original recording as possible. And sometimes we just hear it wrong and thus teach it wrong. But we shouldn't be above being corrected. THANX NATE!!!

Brother Nate, you say its simple to play but you have to remember God had anointed you hands and you have become very skillful with are your craft. However, I am glad you posted this video; I must admit that some parts I was playing wrong.

Great Video Sir. It is very important for us as musicians when it comes to doing Covers & Renditions balancing the two. Learning the Song the way it is written & at the same time putting our own individual signatures on it without taking away from the nature of the song. Very important to keep the melody visible & there are certain spots where we can be free to improvise as long as it smoothly transitions back to the root & builds off from there. There is a time & place for everything. It just a matter of how it is demonstrated. Learn the material as it is written & put our own stamp on it while keeping the melody visible. Balance is key. A Good healthy balance can definitely sustain you & give you longevity.

Hey Bro. Nate. I'm a choir director and this tutorial helps me with music cues from my musician(s) for choir direction. I like my musicians to be true as possible since I don't play but I have a pretty good ear. What you do helps all of us to be better at this craft. I honor the Jesus in you. Be encouraged....

Souled out is a great song! Especially on the radio or on a cd. But I'm a musician also, and I still use fill in chords or augments in any version of a song. Sounds find under the anointing.

It's great to see how simple the pros keep it. It's hard to teach younger cats that simple/pocket is better. But this post from Nate helps to support that theory.
Thanks again Nate for showing how simple it can be and still be effective and supportive.

I never realized how people are afraid of doing things the "right" way....I appreciate this tutorial. First and foremost, Nate didn't find it robbery to share how the song is intended to be played. To Nate: Jesus told them He was the way and they are still trying to do it their way too, so you be encouraged because there are a few of us who want to do it right!!! Keep writing =)

#1 Thanks for the info Nate!
#2 Great teaching, this video was really a big help!
#3 I know why so many people missed that lick. When you listen to the CD, you can't even tell that there is a run, all you can hear (barely) is the G#, G, and F. So on that part, the musicians in the other tutorials were just playing what they heard.
#4 Man, that big "F" where everyone plays it together, makes a big difference!

I desperately need the actual SHEET MUSIC FOR THIS SONG FOR MY GOSPEL CHOIR! My pianist can most likely figure the song out from this tutorial, but I really need horn charts, etc. Could someone please tell me where I can get printed music for this song? My choir and I saw Hezekiah and his group perform it live at "How Sweet the Sound Gospel Fest" in Chicago and were blown away!! Any help would be appreciated. Also, suggestions for well known gospel music sites where you can buy music.

  • @Octive5

Ohhh you just started playing. That explains a lot. I don't think people need to search for the original composers but I do know that most musicians want to know they are playing the right chords to a song, especially when they are playing it around other musicians who know the song. Nobody wants to be laughed at for hitting clunkers.

You'll see too as you get better and better that your ears will develope and you will be more aware when a chord is wrong or right. When that happens, you won't want to play the wrong ones anymore. And yes, there are guys out there who can pick appart a song a get every chord right. But that comes from years of practice and ear developement. All the best to you.

What is wrong this man giving us THE CORRECT way to play the song? heck he is the expert for THIS song and my vote is to play it as close to the composer as possible. I mean this song has been song by just about every church choir in the country not to mention all the accolades it received when it was first released. I say to all you naysayers.. get a life!!! Mr. McNair I think you are a great composer. I also feel that you may have been a little harsh with others who play your song. Most musicians have there own style and perhaps they aren't trying to play it exactly like you. I think it is wonderful that you want people to know your way that you gave birth to the song but you never should down someone in teaching them or make such comments as I don't know why you are having such a hard time because its a easy song.

OK PEOPLE. LET'S GET SOMETHINGS STRAIGHT. I'M NOT GOING TO READ EVERYONE'S COMMENTS. BUT I BELIEVE THIS VIDEO WAS TO CORRECT ALL THE WRONG VIDEOS OUT THERE. WHEN A COMPOSER CREATES A SONG IT WAS CREATED FROM EXPRESSION. NOT EVERYONE WILL PLAY THE SONG AS IS BUT AND A BIG BUT.....YOU CAN NOT PUT A VIDEO UP OF TEACHING SOMEONE HOW TO PLAY A SONG AND YOU CAN'T PLAY THE SONG CORRECTLY YOURSELF. SO I APPLAUD THIS VIDEO.

When giving my youtube piano tutorials, I try to make all mines EXACTLY like the recording, without deviations. And if there are any, its because my ear may have missed something. But i trust Nate's intentionas, and i don't think he was being ugly, or nasty, or putting down musicians...it was simply to correct us. And you've got to give the man a little more leeway than others...HE COMPOSED THE SONG!! LOL. And i think he's earned the right to be a little edgy when its your "baby", ya know? lol.

The guy can play it's his song ,key word ,his song. Once you record a song it's out there for people to tinker with how they see fit. It's not about what you say it's the approach to how you say it. He didn't do this so ppl could learn it the proper way he did it to be noticed now if this has blessed someone in the process than so be it,but the video starts with a certain level of arrogance and lack of humility.

why is there even a argument about "how" to play this song! Nate Mcnair is a music genius, and he composed the song he obviously knows how to play it, now with that being said as musicians we all tinker with chords that fit where the original chords go, which is coo! All nate was tryin to do was show some who r literally BASHING THE SONG, how its actually recorded on da cd! U gotta know peoples intentions and he just tryin to help! stop bein so prideful people.....and learn.....

  • @PianoClubHouse
    @PianoClubHouse 14 років тому +1

My point is this. IF you are just doing a videos of you playing a cover tune, with your own flavor and style.....the sky is the limit! THATS where you can show all your creativity and skillz and fancy chord substitutions. IF you are specifically doing an instructional/tutorial videos on how to play a recorded artists song, it should be as close to the original as you can possibly get it.

  • @louisisaacjr4258

Just a question... Is it getting the chords that you play wrong or is it a musician's style? On a good day I can't play like you but I try to play the song based on what I hear from the whole band in the song... I appreciate you showing us the chords so we can be better instruments of praise...

God inspires lyrics 4 songs, just as he does mesages 4 pastors.HE expects His message to b delivered to his people just as he gave it to the individuals. For a piano player 2 change up chords or remix a song,is just as offensive as a soloist changing up lyrics to the song to suite themselves.Playing a song TRUE to its recording is just as important as singng the same lyrics that were recorded.Yes,some players may not hear everythng and they do the best thy can,but i see where Nate is coming from.

I think its interesting for the creator of a work to correct other peoples interpretation of a work. Yes, If I created a song. I would expect a musician to play it the way I did... but that IS what makes musicians DIFFERENT. Everyone approaches music their own unique way... or we would just be COPYING EVERYONE elses music. Gospel, Blues and Jazz is notorious with copying music from some other composer. You never stop to think how hard it is to COPY what someone else did, with their own unique style, phrasing, voicing, ability, speed, knowledge and experience... not everyone will hear music the same, (this has been proven). Not everyone will KNOW exactly what you did unless it was written on sheet music or they watched you do it. So its NOT a mystery that some players may not play it like you... that can ALSO be a compliment to you.... because musicians SHOULD try to put their own style on a piece when they play... or they will just be copy cats... and at the end of the day... technically they would be infringing on copyrights by taking the exact same notes that you played... for some reason churches are exempt or copyrights are NOT enforced when it comes to churches for what ever reason. Yes, its great that you want to point out how WRONG another musician is who don't have any awards on their walls.... but music is personal it should not be placed in a box where you have to play a song note for note in order for it to be "correct" or "not correct" its weird dealing with the actual composer... thats like someone writing a script or a play and someone doesn't say the line the way you wrote it... they improvised... its not for me to correct them because they took my art and they added their own creativity or flavor to it... not every musician can play as fast and as accurate as you.... instead of looking for the bad, try to be happy the people are actually using the song and blessing churches with the song.... its very generous and kind that you wanted to give the correct way to play it though. it says allot about you... but are you doing it out of kindness or are you doing it because of other reasons? my musician don't play it like you do but the congregation is still blessed.... I play guitar so I couldn't play it right or wrong... God Bless. Minister Robinson.

I understand where he's coming from as far as people saying they're "teaching" the song on UA-cam and they are not playing it how he did. But I don't think he was referring to musicians just playing it in general because most musicians can't play ANY song simple. We're going to add some more chords or different bass line somewhere. That's apart of being creative and gifted. No one can really teach a song like the composer because it is his or her creative thoughts.

That's great on how you showed us your creations of the song. They are unique to you. If a person plays different variations, I think it's ok too. No one's going to play exactly like you. As long as the main format of the song is being followed, I think that other musicians can take some musical libraries at their own discretion and still do justice. I do like the nuances you add to your playing a lot .

  • @Musik216
    @Musik216 14 років тому

@ensr08 I agree with you totally. you reiterated my point "its good to learn the right way first then branch off and make it your OWN"
Also, PIANOCLUBHOUSE put it best...."Yes, u can play the song any way u want to, substitute chords, etc. HOWEVER, playing it on your own for expression, and giving a tutorial to teach others are 2 different things."
I'm not even defending this point as much as I am defending the attack against Nate's character. His intentions are not being recognized properly

@johnlovestosing04 You're missing my point. I understand music evolves, i understand that completely. Any artist has the right to sing or play any song they like in their own style, you've got no debate with me there. Thats exactly HOW music ends up evolving. As i have clarified several times in this topic, my comments are referring specifically to people attempting to teach the song to others, as opposed to playing it for self expression or personal reasons.

exaclty... I appreciate this vid too. There's ALOT I can learn from this man. But I'm wonderin why d other renditions were wrong? Many of em sounded okay.
I also believe music is about expression and that the experience is personal, thus yielding a unique product. As I posted a week ago. I will learn this song the right way, if I need to, thanx to this 5* vid. But I believe that the performer has certain freedoms as long as he/she follows the basic song structure. But kudos to the composer.

from how the composer plays it. So this debate is futile. There are people on here acting like when they play from a recording, they all of a sudden embody the spirit of the composer and miraculously don't assimilate their own prior musical experiences into their interpretation. If its not charted or on sheet music, you are only going off of whats in your head already.

Thanks for the video post, but you do have to keep in mind that they are learning this by ear and it's very easy for them to miss a chord or miss a note in the chord. And also if there not sure what a chord might be, they're going playing according to how it sounds to them & Yes they may not be right. So people on shouldn't critisize the teachers who are taking tim to learn the song the way they hear it and post it for yall to learn. If it's so wrong, don't come on here trying to learn to play it.

Dang ya'll some sensitive musicians. Who cares how he said it he's giving you a free lesson on you tube just take the criticism humble yourself and learn it right. The Bible says that a fool spiteth correction. Take the correction build a bridge and get over it.

This tutorial showed me how to correctly play the song. But I am no where near as talented as he is. Not even 10%. That's because I don't play with talent, but with spirit. There's been times when I would play songs and chords that I never heard before, because I follow the spirit. I always thought I was doing something right playing it the way the church would rock with it. I didn't think it was an issue changing it up a lil bit. But I guess I have work to do to match the original version.

@kwwyatt lol. I know this video may cause some unfair judgment on Mr. Nate, but you are right on. No need to debate certain things, just refer to the Word of God which should be our guide. Good job. Even if he doesn't intend to offend or whatever, as an influential voice, you have to be careful even how you come across to other people who may be young in the spirit. Thats word.

Great video!!! I was kinda wonderin' tho. Why r the other renditions by those other cats wrong? I thought music was all about making something your own and personal expression. I guess beginners would keep it simple, advanced cats would spice it up to their liking. As long as they use the right progressions. But it would never be like the original because that was your way of bringin it and that's personal. Or am I wrong. Otherwise everyone performing this song might as well use a instrumental.
