The song was written for Jennifer Grey who was going through a break up with Matthew Broderick, she's the character "Baby" from dirty dancing. Her breakup inspired madonna to write express yourself. This was another massive Madonna hit when it came out. Now it’s a classic. An empowerment song. And yeah there was some controversy decades later when Lady Gaga release Born This Way and many accusing Gaga of plagiarism due to the similar chord changes. She's been supportive of her too in the very beginning but I'm sorry to say, there is a fine line between being inspired or paying a homage and ripping off someone. And Gaga has been very much doing that for quite some time, she never credited Madonna, in this particular case, I will never forget when not only was this song obviously inspired by M, she went on to perform it in an outfit closely resembling Madonna's own imagery which also happens to be an iconic look for M, just to go on to thank Whitney Houston in her speech. I don't know how you read that, but that was literally disrespectful. I think that's when Madonna couldn't ignore it anymore and lost her cool about it. I wish she didn't, but then again, the whole point is - saying Madonna doesn't know how to pass the torch, after all the evidence on contrary - and after she has literally paved the way for anything women in pop do today - is a bit too much. PLEASE find and react to Madonna performing Express Yourself/Born This Way live in one of her MDNA Tour shows. It's titled "Express Yourself/Born This Way/She's Not Me" (Live Miami) Hollywood and the media has always hyped up feuds, but I think for a little while there was somewhat of a feud between the two. Having grown up as a Madonna fan since i was in grade school and her career just really taking off, I don't feel the feud between them was as personal as people made it out to be. Madonna just made a comment in an interview saying that it was "reductive" for Lady Gaga to so obviously do many of the things Madonna did so early on in her career. I feel Madonna was saying Lady Gaga had so much more to offer than simply copying Madonna. Madonna can be rough around the edges and can come across the wrong way with people. This clip on UA-cam, where Madonna performed a "Express Yourself/Born This Way," that was her way of putting a nail in that coffin and moving on.
lol at the pussycat imagery going right over their innocent heads. The theme of the video is based on a classic German silent film called Metropolis. The movie is a commentary on the evils of capitalism and the industrial revolution, and centres around a corrupt factory owner (the 'mind' in the quote at the end of the video) and his naïve, well-intentioned son, the practically enslaved workers (the 'hands') in the factory, and a virtuous woman who tries to help the workers (the 'heart'). The woman is captured by an evil scientist who takes her image and transplants it onto a robot, who performs and erotic dance and seduces the men of the factory... convincing them to destroy the factory and everyone in it. The son rescues the woman and they both manage to save the factory from being destroyed. The owner learns that he needs to treat his workers with respect as they both need each other to co-exist and be successful. M takes the Art Deco style of the film and loosely bases the story of the video on the film. The bald guy represents the evil factory owner... he treats his workers terribly and even has musicians trapped in a glass dome to play for his amusement. Presumably, he keeps Madonna in a gilded cage, however the chains we see her in represent her being enchained by her own desires, letting her heart and body overrule her head. She releases the cat (female energy/sexuality) to get the men to 'wake up' from their enslavement... most of the men begin fighting (to try to win her by combat?) but the man she wants finds her cat (he even gets drenched by her 'milk') and travels up to her chambers. The song and video are about women finding a man who will treat them with respect, not just seduce them with trappings that are ultimately unimportant, like looks, money, and power. It's therefore seen as a some about feminism and female empowerment, and gay men identified with the messaging as well.
At the time, this was the most expensive music video ever made ($11 million in today’s money) and is currently the third most expensive video ever made.
8:40 yeaaaahhhh!!! you got it guys! (sorry my English not perfect but youll understand, Im from Argentina by the way) That sentence, means just THAT! That your FEELINGS must connect your thinking and your believes with your actions, its like your actions and your thouhts must be always guided by your HEART. The whole lyrics of the song were originally dedicated to her first ex husband, and she basically says that he must express the love he feels for her, or otherwise she is going to move on by her self " ...and when you are gone he might regret it and think about the love he once had"... "dont go for second best put your love to the test! " that was Madonna s ways of saying dont be a conformist, know your value, love your self... LOVE YOURSELF... EXPRESS YOURSELF... so you can RESPECT YOURSELF ...hey hey! On the story of the video, M plays the wife of this powerfull men who is very rich and owns a kind of factory and keeps her elevated on a tower but alone (her only companion is a cat) and she is chained (she cant escape or interact with the employees/slaves) but one of this man CAN! and goes for her and the end...well.. you see...the make love, happy ending, LOVE wins.
The lady got it! She's right about the tempo and rhythm are influenced by this to that. Madonna started everything and the rest are just followers. Her presence alone demands the highest stature she only deserves, the biggest female artist ever graced the history of entertainment and arts!!!
During this “born this way era” Madonna was asked about GaGa and the similarities in their image and music. Madonna’s response was “it’s seems very reductive” when the reporter asked what does that mean Madonna replied with a sip from her tea cup “look it up” 😂😂
Has anybody mentioned the whole Metropolis by Fritz Lang connection? Apart from the whole vibe and the aestethics of the video, that movie provided also the closing statement.
The quote it means that you have to put feelings, humanity, your heart, between your thoughts and the realisation of them, if not, it would be no difference between us and machines, robots...the video is inspired in the Fritz Lang film" Metropolis" from the 20's of the XX century
haha you mentioned the Elephant in the Room. Everybody said it sounds like Express Yourself when Born This Way came out in 2011 and Gaga got defensive. To be honest, it almost sounds like sampled it. They are very similar both in sound and message. This Madonna jam came out in 1989, talk about a timeless song and video.
The imagery for this video borrows heavily from a 1920s German film, Metropolis. A futuristic, dystopian tale about bridging the divide between the workers and the leaders. The quote is paraphrased from the ultimate message of the film.
You should watch the live version of this from the movie Truth or Dare, it explains alot of the androdines aspect you were talking about, also, there was a video that a random person made with her song "Two Steps Behind" that showed all the times Lady Gaga copied Madonnas style in certain videos, but was taken down bc it was supposedly a snub to Lady Gaga, which it was but definitely got the point across, if you ever find it, it's very good and very interesting, and one last thing, All Hail, the Queen, @MADONNA.. 👑
Directed by David Fincher (the first of 4 for Madonna) and inspired by Fritz Lang's 1927 film "Metropolis", a newly brunette Madonna shows up blonde as she's currently filming Dick Tracy and fought Warren Beatty (whom she was dating at the time) for time off to shoot this video. The bare chested guy is Cameron (Alborzian), one of the few male "supermodels" of the time.
Listen, in 1989 nobody thought she was androgenous... women wore suits in the 80s.. BUT the video was prob the most amazing thing up to that point we'd ever seen on MTV!!!!!! It's lighting and burned out colors became the standard for all videos in the 90s.
G'day it's Steven from Down Under again This single and the music video were released circa 1989, of course at the time there was controversy surrounding the music video and there was an edited version due to the version you've reacted to being deemed "inappropriate". If memory serves me correctly this was another huge hit on the world wide music charts. And Yes many female artists including Gaga have been influenced and inspired by Madonna. Hey guys, what's up with the soda brand y'all have in the background, it seems to be popular right now in the States? All hail the Queen of Pop!
Thanks, Marissa! Thanks, Tyler! 🛠 This video was inspired by METROPOLIS (1927), the silent masterpiece. It's a sci-fi tale depicting a world in which the rich live in lavish skyscrapers, the poor live underground and must run the machines that keep the upper world functioning... you know, kind of an exploration of classism. The heart represents a character of conscience; the hand represents the workers; the mind represents the wealthy. It's long, but if you ever get a chance to watch it, it's worth the time. #TylerCreatesContent #ExpressYourself #Madonna
Quote is from the movie metropolis. Everything about the song, video and Madonna is self empowerment. It was THE dance anthem for women and many gays then. Men are usually intimidated by her, except the ones who support the progressive movement. 😂
One of her best 4 songs and best video ever along with Vogue. You have to watch "Express Yourself" from MDNA Tour, and... By the way, I´m gonna begin to count the times Tyler yawns 🤣🤣🤣
It is definitely a song about Woman empowerment. She is in control. It is her who puts herself in chains. No man dominates her unless she lets him. She has explained this in interviews in the past, especially in the Nightline interview when she discusses "Justify My Love" when questioned about her being so sexual in her videos. If you look back at Madonna's career, she has used "sex" in a way you see men do it, but the difference is, she's in control. She turns it around, using her own sexuality to seduce and entice her listeners and viewers. It's been a huge part of her career. And yeah, there was a big deal back in 2012 when Lady Gaga released "Born This Way". This is where the term "Reductive" came about. Not a word Madonna made up, but she used that word describing "Born This Way" and how she definitely recognized the song sounds similar to "Express Yourself". The feud was really among fan bases, and bit one sided on Lady Gaga's part. She seemed to have denied Madonna's influence at the time and came off as if she wasn't on good terms with Madonna. Meanwhile, other than Madonna commenting on the song, she never partook in any feud between them. She even agreed to do a skit with Lady Gaga on Saturday Night Live a few years before where the two were fighting. Since then, fan bases pitted the two women against each other. Lady Gaga was the only one who fed into it, trying to come off as a victim, while Madonna pretty much ignored it. The fan bases were mostly responsible for giving the impression the two didn't get along, when it was just the fans skirting drama and hating on one another.
See this music Live Blond Ambition Tour Barcelona. Madonna, from the very begining, " The Virgin Tour" changed the way to make live concerts. See all the references from the big stars. And about Gaga: " So if you want it right now, then make him show you how Express what he's got, oh baby ready or not" "I'm beautiful in my way 'cause god makes no mistakes I'm on the right track baby I was born this way"
Both this song and Lady Gaga's Born this Way are terrific songs but there was big controversy when lady released this song saying she ripped off Madonna's Melody of Express yourself for a Born this Way they do sound very similar but Madonna came first one of her best videos
I dont get how people really believe the two artists have any problem between them. It was clearly a marketing strategy. And It was so well done, that people are going to talk about It for a long time. At the time the were part of the same label, so, It all make sense even more. Especially Madonna's response, "reductive/ look It Up", etc. Made this an espectacular chapter in pop history. I really enjoyed It a lot.
Androgyny? No. Your reaction to her videos are funny most of the time. You've yet to learn the impact Madonna has had on music and pop culture. She is the Queen! Videos to watch: Burning Up, Crazy for you, Deeper and deeper, Fever. Music, Celebration. You've put a big dent in her video catalog. Keep it up.
EXACTLY. Their interpretation of this song/video was so banal. Madonna gave a pretty in-depth interpretation of this song as this was the first video which she financed entirely HERSELF. She chose everything.. the concept, the lighting, design, "finding the right cat".. etc. She was inspired by the film Metropolis and it shows as she embodies BOTH male and female characters.. and unlike the film, she has them coming up to HER level.. this video is my favorite Madonna video. I just wish people would do their research before they view/comment on it!!
YES - madonna even remixed this song later with gaga's born this way in concert and then transitioned into song "she's not me" because gaga stole this from madonna
Even today people think that Madonna was mean when she called “ REDUCTIVE” to the similitude between gaga’s song and Express yourself, it’s literally a copy/paste move. Madonna invented gaga 40 years ago.
I think it says a lot about how culture has grown and changed that some of the (back in the day) controversial things in the video (Madonna's crotch grabbing, being chained to a bed) didn't seem to provoke much of a reaction from the two of you.. and then later on you discussed the themes of the video but weren't like 😲 in the moment. Then again, we are inundated daily with everyday people trying to outshock each other, etc on tik tok and other venues. Is there anything that really shocks us anymore?

Many people says that she's an LGBTQ++ supporter that is why mostly her fans are from that category of people which is also true, but then there are also many straights, children and women who really love her brand of music especially in my country the Philippines. We do not think of her as an LGBTQ++ supporter first, if then so what?!, we see her as an artist who defy standards and made her own art far more better than the rest, she's always steps ahead of everybody leaving them all behind.
Lady Gaga did copy the melody from Madonna's Express Yourself for her song Born This Way which she denied. You should check out this video mashup of Express Yourself and Born this way and you'll hear it ua-cam.com/video/Yy-D1Iwr7Gw/v-deo.html . In an interview Madonna was asked how she felt about it and did she look at is homage or flattery and Madonna's response was "It Feels Reductive". So Madonna was not happy about it but she's not one to dwell on shit or hold a grudge, but I personally don't like Lady Gaga because of her trying to copy Madonna and I can't stand when Lady Gaga fans call her the "New Madonna" because that will never be. That term the "New Madonna has been used since Madonna first came out and nobody ever measured up to Madonna. Now Lady Gaga is talented and successful I'll give her that but she will never have the Iconic Legacy that Madonna has...Respect!
As per usual, the Right and religious groups were all whining about this video..as they did with all Madonna videos...this one in particular for grabbing her crotch during the song. And no as far as anyone knows there is no beef between Madonna and Lady Gaga...I think there is some beef between fans though

☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️
This.
Yes… thankyou for writing this. And the lure of the pussy, makes this video everything.
At the time, this was the most expensive music video ever made ($11 million in today’s money) and is currently the third most expensive video ever made.
"I think that part right there sounds like Lady Gaga's Born this Way" !! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOOLOL!!!!
The best part is when she does that dance in the black suit.
Tyler and Merrisa: It reminds us of "Born this way"
Gaga: 😠😠😠
This song was massive!
You really need to see the Truth or Dare / Blonde Ambition version of Express Yourself.
I got chills when u said “Born this way”
Gaga was totally accused of ripping it off!
👍👍👊👊💙💙zane
Came out 34 years ago and is so timeless, iconic video. Vogue is even better.
Thank you for another great video reaction!🌷🌷🌷🌷
The quote it means that you have to put feelings, humanity, your heart, between your thoughts and the realisation of them, if not, it would be no difference between us and machines, robots...the video is inspired in the Fritz Lang film" Metropolis" from the 20's of the XX century
haha you mentioned the Elephant in the Room. Everybody said it sounds like Express Yourself when Born This Way came out in 2011 and Gaga got defensive. To be honest, it almost sounds like sampled it. They are very similar both in sound and message. This Madonna jam came out in 1989, talk about a timeless song and video.
everybody is influenced by Madonna 😆. Even if they don´t say it.
A masterpiece
Hand is touch, mind is mental (logic) but the heart is emotion 😉
You guys should watch her tour performance of this song!!!
This song was second release off of the Like a Prayer album and another huge hit for Madonna. The video was inspired from an old movie Metropolis.
The video was inspired by Fritz Lang's Metropolis and directed by David Fincher. David Fincher would also direct Madonna's Vogue and Oh Father videos.
Born this way was....Reductive ☕
Gaga copying this song was a huge scandal.
CHER, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper they were the pop icons that inspired the rest.
The imagery for this video borrows heavily from a 1920s German film, Metropolis. A futuristic, dystopian tale about bridging the divide between the workers and the leaders.
The quote is paraphrased from the ultimate message of the film.
Is Born this way!
Nah....the live version from the MTV Video awards is the best ...she rocked that performance with Nikki and Donna!!!!
Nah....the live version from the MTV Video awards is the best ...she rocked that performance with Nikki and Donna!!!!
This video is beautiful and very expensive!! I love the song… Please go and check the Blond Ambition Tour live version of this song… it’s epic!
There is a major similarity between the two, in a interview in 2012 Madonna called lady gaga 'reductive' xxx
*Its obvious Born This Way sounds very much alike Express Yourself and another Gagas hit Perfect Illusion sounds like Madonnas Papa Dont Preach*
As 1989 this was the most expensive music video ever done with a budget of $5 million. Still is among the TOP 5 Most expensive videos ever!
G'day it's Steven from Down Under again
This single and the music video were released circa 1989, of course at the time there was controversy surrounding the music video and there was an edited version due to the version you've reacted to being deemed "inappropriate".
The video for this song caused a lot of stir when it first came out. Definitely a time capsule for what was considered provocative at the time.
Pathbreaking
Madonna
Global domination
Queen
You are correct. The similarity of the two tunes did cause a minor beef between Madonna and Lady Gaga.
Quote is from the movie metropolis.
Everything about the song, video and Madonna is self empowerment. It was THE dance anthem for women and many gays then. Men are usually intimidated by her, except the ones who support the progressive movement. 😂
There is a mash up with Born this Way and Express Yourself
one of madonna’s iconic videos, and you’re yawning! lol 😆
One of her best 4 songs and best video ever along with Vogue.
You have to watch "Express Yourself" from MDNA Tour, and...
By the way, I´m gonna begin to count the times Tyler yawns 🤣🤣🤣
Lmao +!! We're 49 seconds in Tyler......love you guys
Ariana grande posted on UA-cam a mash up of born this way and express yourself a few years ago
lol... the shade of it all
@@graphiquejack
It’s not really shade if it’s a fact. 😎
One of my favorite videos of all time. Still looks as timeless today!
See this music Live Blond Ambition Tour Barcelona. Madonna, from the very begining, " The Virgin Tour" changed the way to make live concerts. See all the references from the big stars. And about Gaga: " So if you want it right now, then make him show you how
Express what he's got, oh baby ready or not"
"I'm beautiful in my way
'cause god makes no mistakes
I'm on the right track baby
I was born this way"
You two should check out one of Madonna's live videos where she sang this AND parts of Born This Way.
Borderline , Burning up, Celebration, crazy for you, Holiday
The most iconic vídeo after Like a virgin
Prefer "like a virgin", "crazy for you", "la isla bonita"...but my fav is "Borderline"
I think you would love some of madonna's more dancy & catchy tunes, I recommend 'music', 'deeper and deeper', 'me against the music' or 'dress you up'
One of the best and most expensive music videos of all time. Tyler you yawning during your videos is so weird. Make them when you are rested
Both this song and Lady Gaga's Born this Way are terrific songs but there was big controversy when lady released this song saying she ripped off Madonna's Melody of Express yourself for a Born this Way they do sound very similar but Madonna came first one of her best videos
I am gagging with the moment they notice Born This Way is a copy
I dont get how people really believe the two artists have any problem between them. It was clearly a marketing strategy. And It was so well done, that people are going to talk about It for a long time. At the time the were part of the same label, so, It all make sense even more.
Especially Madonna's response, "reductive/ look It Up", etc. Made this an espectacular chapter in pop history. I really enjoyed It a lot.
@ithinkthefucknotyoutrickas5506 She said the song "Born this way" is reductive not Lady gaga.
don't fall asleep!!!!
Androgyny? Keep it up.
Word.
Of course it is androgynous when she comes out in a wide man's suit, grabs her crotch and flexes her biceps. They were not wrong.
There are more than "similarities" between both songs. You can compare and check 🤭🤭🤭
Still to rthis day the 3rd most expensive pop video of all time. U should watch her recreate it live in 1990 Blond Ambition tour.
The imagery of this video is based on the classic silent film "Metropolis"
So
This video is inspired by
Fritz Lang's movie
Metropolis 😊
I think it says a lot about how culture has grown and changed that some of the (back in the day) controversial things in the video (Madonna's crotch grabbing, being chained to a bed) didn't seem to provoke much of a reaction from the two of you.. and then later on you discussed the themes of the video but weren't like 😲 in the moment. Then again, we are inundated daily with everyday people trying to outshock each other, etc on tik tok and other venues. Is there anything that really shocks us anymore?
I hear ya...I yawned at your reaction too.
I'm yawning at this comment right now.
You know you can be tired and yawning right?
I would like to see Marissa react to something on her own without Tyler constantly chipping in with his annoying thoughts. I’m not hating on him, I just think she seems more clued up and gets things more than him. She even looks at him as if to say enough already.
#TEAMMARISA
I’m sorry, you say I’m not hating on him but you came to his page and literally wrote “Tyler constantly chipping in with his annoying thoughts” then say his co host is “more clued up than him” you’re absolutely hating on him. If that’s how you feel fine but then you can easily just stop watching this channel.
@@missbigkim Oh dear… If you really think that it’s hateful, because I’m saying somebody’s behaviour is annoying. Then I’d hate to see how you’d deal with a real hateful problem in life!!
Is repeated yawning going to be a thing now Tyler ?
Does a tired person having a natural yawning reaction to their tiredness hurt your feelings somehow.?
@@crichtonjohn3393 weird response from you. Straight to the passive aggressive insult. No, it isn't about feelings , it's about expecting a professional standard from video providers. If a presenter isn't up to doing a video on a particular day then don't bother. Do it tomorrow. Obviously your standards are so low that you accept sub standard viewing .
@@MarkJohnson-dr4ws Expecting a professional standard from 2 young charismatic people making videos from a bedroom is ridiculous. Obviously your standards are so high that you can't accept just a fun goofy commentary. Where do you think you are? The Rolling Stone channel.
If Madonna was pissed, we'd all know it, she's no wallflower.
Cool....madonna cherish reaction
Many people says that she's an LGBTQ++ supporter that is why mostly her fans are from that category of people which is also true, but then there are also many straights, children and women who really love her brand of music especially in my country the Philippines. We do not think of her as an LGBTQ++ supporter first, if then so what?!, we see her as an artist who defy standards and made her own art far more better than the rest, she's always steps ahead of everybody leaving them all behind.
She definitely wasn’t going for androgynous in this era, she was going for more or Marilyn Monroe look during this period.
IT IS A REAL THING.
Next God Control, Dark Ballet and Sky Fits Heaven live from Drowned World Tour please
madonna wins
As per usual, the Right and religious groups were all whining about this video..as they did with all Madonna videos...this one in particular for grabbing her crotch during the song. And no as far as anyone knows there is no beef between Madonna and Lady Gaga...I think there is some beef between fans though
express you selalf verses born this way
If you are going to yawn with this song, there is no point in continuing to watch anything on this channel.
Tyler constantly yawning through the iconic Express Yourself is homophobic!
I believe he's just simple minded. A young Virgin with no real life experience yet.
I hope you are attempting to be funny, cause this is a ridiculous statement.
@@crichtonjohn3393 It’s just me being sassy. Relax!
@Marvin Quezada It was meant to be funny. As Express Yourself is such a gay anthem, and he’s yawning through it. Lighten up!
@teralmiles Humor is always welcomed, especially Sarcasm in my book! FYI to body language comments of others; 'Verbal Translation of multiple Yawning: “I’m bored, exhausted or stressed causing me to take an exaggerated inhalation of air, stretch out my jaw and ease some of the discomfort I’m experiencing'. --- I am lol on the boredom angle but empathetic on the discomfort angle, ever since seeing the reaction to Justify My Love.
great song listen youngins
Please do a reaction to Madonna's new video that just came out like 13 hours ago is" backed that up to the beat"
😍😍😍😍
Not really new found information, it's an old feud between the two, let's say Gaga is inspired. A lot actually, but that's fine. How can you not be inspired by Madonna. She actually called it 'reductive'. They are okay with each other now.
Very interesting you guys reacting to this video without mentioning Madonna is in her 50’s completely slaying it next to a much much younger artist and did it better than him
omg the yawning
React to “Zitti e buoni” of Maneskin. They’re incredible 😊 I’m curious what you think
I think The company that all those people are working for is owned by that old guy, and that's her husband, but she would rather be with the hot worker.
