    What I really like about this video is that you're destroying the notion of techniques being "To deadly" for sparring. You clearly show the ability to adapt your techniques to what you are doing at the time. You look great man. Now learn some ground defense and do an MMA bout

    Where can I learn hung gar? Great video love you demonstrating the techniques then showing them in sparring.
    I’ve looked a lot for these forms and i want to learn them but can’t find all of them. I’ve found a few but I haven’t found shooting star form or 9 son continuous fist form for example. Where can I see videos and learn the forms you have?

    • @HungGarEarthBender
      @HungGarEarthBender  3 роки тому

      Both of those forms are taught in the Cheung Shu Pui lineage. As of a few months ago, I believe the only place that teaches the Shooting Star form (in the US) is Rick Panico in Troutman NC. There is also a book that teaches the form and it's called "shooting star." We also have the 9 son continuous fist form but lots of schools have that one.

    Imagine how effective these techniques are when you have solid low stances and smooth transitions like a Hung Ga practitioner would have?

    • @HungGarEarthBender
      @HungGarEarthBender  5 років тому

      Collin Corcoran Hung Gar trains low but fights high. You’ll never see an experienced Hung Gar fighter engaging someone in a low horse stance unless they are using the low stance to momentarily change levels to strike low.

    • @TheNaroCroc
      @TheNaroCroc 5 років тому

      Why do you say "never?"
      I happen to win my fights because of the powerful stance work I learned from Hung Ga.
      It sort of annoys me that you claim to speak for all of us. I assure you, the traditional Hung Ga schools keep it low for a reason... Power.
      If you decide to try it out... bobbing up and down to "change levels" will result is losing all your power. The flow between stances must be smooth and you will have to learn to stay on 45° and 90° angles not only in your footwork but throughout your entire form.
      That's how we learned it in the 80's... How shocking to hear from you that we have all been doing it wrong for generations and that you have never seen it.

    • @HungGarEarthBender
      @HungGarEarthBender  5 років тому

      @@TheNaroCroc you can have a smooth stance transition from horse to forward for example without having low stances.
      I train my stances low when doing them statically at the beginning of each class and during forms but when I fight I am never in a horse stance with my thighs parallel to the ground. When I fight I step off line 45 degrees all the time and I can do that because my stance is high and therefore more mobile. A low stance will give you good stability but you aren't as nimble when you are low so it makes it harder to step off line when dodging... or dodging at all. With that being said maybe you don't want to be nimble because you're more comfortable standing toe-toe with a guy and exchanging blows and being sturdy. To each their own. This would be more of the tiger mindset as I am sure you know.
      But I am a tall lanky guy and thus I don't fight with a tiger mindset. I am more of a snake and crane fighter relying on long bridges, long angular attacks, with fast transitions from stance to stance. One of the characteristics of the dragon fighting style is the constant changing of levels and the direction from which your attacks come so I would also consider myself to be heavily influenced by the Dragon mindset.
      I want you to watch a video by Sifu Sharif Bey where he talks about how Hung Gar practitioners train low but don't fight low. You may not take my word for it but maybe you will from him. ua-cam.com/video/Qp7TX3tCIOk/v-deo.html

      @@HungGarEarthBender , I can respect your build. I happen to very Snake and Tiger.
      That was all I wanted to put forward. You're willing to put on pads I would let my opponent wear but would refuse for myself.
      I don't want to miss out on further conditioning... It's kind of the point of what I do, and honestly you saying I don't exist just makes my tactics more powerful.

    • @HungGarEarthBender
      @HungGarEarthBender  5 років тому +1

      Collin Corcoran I never said you don’t exist, whatever that’s supposed to mean, I just disagreed with you and showed that someone else also disagrees with you so it isn’t only me.
      Also, I don’t wear pads to protect myself and avoid conditioning. Most of the time if I’m wearing pads it’s because I’m respecting the rules of the tournament that require them or the rules of the gym that I am visiting. I also wear them to protect my opponent because I like head kicks but I don’t like knocking people out so I occasionally wear shin guards.
      Fight however you want and train however you want. Just because I disagree with you shouldn’t mean anything. I have enough experience to know what works and is best for me and to know when someone else is just trying to look big behind his keyboard.

    If there’s a reason Chinese Kung Fu gained notoriety for being fake is because of it’s unadaptability over the centuries. Like most abstract religions it’s dogmatic with regards to it’s precepts. I believed all martial arts were originally created with the purpose of good self-defence but unfortunately, practitioners have corrupted it with focus of showiness over efficiency over the years.

    • @HungGarEarthBender
      @HungGarEarthBender  4 роки тому +1

      You're preaching to the choir man. This is where I was at however many years ago but after this video was made I started training with Muay Thai people and learning Jujitsu. I am grateful for what I got from Kung Fu but there is definitely more out there. I think Muay Thai can be dogmatic as well by not learning from other styles. They tell me I shouldn't throw sidekicks because "Muay Thai doesn't do that" but its one of the most effective kicks out there. MMA and modern culture aren't killing Kung Fu, we are killing ourselves by not adapting.

    • @BoyG10
      @BoyG10 4 роки тому

      36th Chamber Hung Gar 👍 Staying fixed to dead styles and patterns only rendered us immobile and exposed to dangers or even death. But unfortunately, many practitioners are stubborn enough not to adapt but continuing to believe in the superiority of their arts albeit not effectively proven. Not surprising to find BJJ exponents doing ground locks in real street fights only to be hacked by multiple accomplices. I’ve come to know one Singapore Hung Gar chap who often upload UA-cam videos of himself doing cheesy demonstrations and acting cocky. Check it out. His ID is Devon Woon.

      36th Chamber Hung Gar That Leroy Kwok dude was an acquaintance of Devon Woon apparently and they did couple of street-fight videos on UA-cam. Rather low-standard I dare say from their display and obviously in contrary to their self-acclaimed expertise of the art. But they’re both indeed cocky and insensitive so what more do you expect of their pupils. That Devon dude also got personal whimsically at anyone who spoke against him or his art. He enjoyed mimicking Bruce Lee and even boasted he is his reborn and crap like that. Well, I’m not into Hung Gar and definitely not finding out more but was rather put off by these fools who thought they are simply “Somebody” who learnt the art Master Wong Fei Hong once did.

      Stuart Perry-Hughes I have done a lot of full contract sparring when I was young and wild. But now that I’m older and working on a professional chiropractic and acupuncture career I really don’t want to risk injuring myself, or my brain, for a plastic medal at a tournament. I have a few videos of me sparring a guy in an octagon that are recent, but again, I’m not hitting full contact. I think my opponent might be trying to hit me full contract but I don’t dish what I don’t want to receive so I kick lightly.
      That’s one reason I started doing jujitsu. I can go as hard as I want and risk of injury is far less.

    Kickboxing was created because boxing has superior hand technique to Eastern martial arts so they combined boxing with the kicks from martial arts. I'm not a big fan of punching techniques found in martial arts but then again they're not meant for gloved combat

    • @HungGarEarthBender
      @HungGarEarthBender  4 роки тому +3

      I feel like this is a very balanced opinion. Boxing probably does have better hand techniques than eastern martial arts but... a true fight is never just boxing. So, to specialize in only using half your body is great in sport but it doesn't necessarily translate into real life. No disrespect to boxing or anything.; they are great at what they do. But Connor McGregor would whoop any boxer if it was an MMA fight. Even a mid-level UFC fighter could probably take out the best boxer because kicks change the whole game.

I have also done Judo, Wrestling and Kickboxing at three different clubs (2 loosely based on Lau Gar and 1 a Praying Mantis / Muay Thai hybrid). What i hate about 'deadly styles' is how uncreative the masters of them are, like i love silat and dangerous arts like these. But it's all about incorporation rather than "oop my art is for killing so i won't use it lmao" you can use killing arts safely. Like i can snap peoples necks, arms, and tear legs with brazilian jiu jitsu. Why can't i use silat's techniques safely? Like I've done it and made silat as a strong base for me, worked so far. And I've developed something unique.

      I practice Silat to crush,kill and destroy anyone who would attack me as martial arts were desighned for war.If no one attacks me nor mine than its just a good way to get fit and have fun learning how to defend your self as martial arts were never ment to be used as a sport like humans do today see.

      fair point. A lot of these videos, like the ones with me wearing a white shirt were taken about 10 years ago and after 2 years of no training due to me doing a mission trip in Nicaragua. Some of the other ones are more recent with a boxing club on my campus. Are any of these guys amateur fighters? no. But I have recently joined an MMA gym so I hope to get some better sparring videos up soon. I have 2, I think, that are up right now. We aren't competing or trying to knock each other out but contact is made. One reason I like recording myself and I haven't taken down any old videos is that I like to look back on older videos that, at the time I thought were amazing, and look at them years later and cringe at how bad they actually are. Its all about progress, and I am documenting mine.

    That's cool that you posted clips of you sparring with different people in different gyms as well as you competing in tournaments. Do you have any footage of you sparring at a kickboxing or MMA gym with people who are a little more experienced. There is nothing wrong with sparring with beginners, in fact I admire the fact that you went in to different gyms and sparred with different people who practice different martail arts, but if you are going to label the video "Hungar takes on other Martail Arts", then to be fair you should also show clips where you are sparring with more experienced and higher level players. Besides being a great learning experience, to find out if your unique skills work just as well on higher level practitioners of other Martail Arts, it also makes the video more interesting. But congratulations on your journey, and for posting it.

      Thank you, yes I do have a few other videos on my channel. One is called sparring with a friend or something like that. In reality, I don't know the guy so I wouldn't say we are friends. I just didn't know what to call the video. That is in an octagon after a muay Thai workout so we are both pretty tired. I wasn't trying to knock him out or anything, which is why I land so many light head kicks.
      I have another one where we are on a blue wrestling mat. I didn't anticipate that my sneakers would be so grippy on the mat so my footwork isn't great and I barely throw any kicks because I couldn't pivot at all. however, in the octagon fight I throw a lot of kicks so if you watch those together you will get an idea of my limited abilities. Plenty of people could beat me. I am nobody special.

      @@HungGarEarthBender I didn't mean it like that, infact, I think it's cool that you sparr with other people who do not train in your art and then post it on social media. If anything, keep doing what you're doing, I enjoyed your videos. BTW, I'm nothing to brag about either. What I meant is if you label the video "Hungar vs everyone else", and if you really want to test your ability, as well as find out how well the technique in your art fairs to the technique in any other art, then also sparr with intermediate and advanced level practitioners of different disciplines, and maybe even pro fighters or at the very least rank amatures. Don't get me wrong, It's cool to sparr with beginners, but sparr with everyone (if nothing else, just for the learning experience/that is the only real way to gauge what really works and who it works on and why its more effective on certain people), and then maybe post it if you feel comfortable doing that, although I would be interested in watching it.

      @@ropongi1008 Thanks for clarifying your intentions. I do spar with more advanced people; especially since I joined my local UFC gym. I didn't have the idea to make this video and then film a bunch of stuff. I filmed a bunch of random meetups and then I made this video. I often don't record sparring matches in the UFC gym because that's just not something you really do in there so I don't have a lot of video segments from there. I do have a few on my channel though where I am in an octagon. Again though, how trained are those guys in the octagon? IDK but they show up to train and fight so I fought them.
      If you watch 2 very trained martial arts guy fight each other, such as in the UFC, one guy can totally embarrass another guy and make him look like a beginner but that fighter isn't a beginner because he wouldn't be in the UFC if he was. So it's hard to look at the loser of a fight and say, "oh, this guy must suck; look how bad he got beat"... but that isn't always true because sometimes people just get outmatched.

    • @ropongi1008

      @@HungGarEarthBender I totally agree with what you said. Yes, there is etiquette when it comes to recording sparing sessions and posting them on social media without the other person's consent, I totally agree with that. And yes, if someone is over matched in a fight or sparring session, they might be made to look like an amateur (assuming we are talking about professional fighters). However, there is ALMOST always a HUGE difference between watching two professional fighters sparr or fight (weather it's in the UFC or any sanctioned promotion that's governed by any set of rules from any full contact combat sport ie MMA, Kickboxing etc....), and watching two untrained people fight in the street or 2 beginners sparr in the gym. Yes, when you are watching the UFC or any other legitimate combat sport promotion, one fighter might outclass the other, and the other fighter might look really bad by comparison and perform poorly, but I think most people understand that both fighters who are competing on that platform, are probably at a certain level, and they should definitely have their fundamentals down, or they wouldn't be there. I think most people can differentiate between watching a pro and watching a beginner sparr in the gym. I think it would be obvious to almost anyone when they are watching someone sparr who is a beginner and just doesn't have their fundamentals down and makes a lot novice or amature mistakes that show that they either don't have much training or have not progressed beyond a beginners level ,vs watching a pro or a rank amature who isn't performing well in sparring because they are overmatched. When I don't do well in sparring, it's for one of 3 reasons (and I try to be very honest with myself about it), 1: I don't have my fundamentals down and I am making a lot of novice mistakes, 2: I am simply overmatched because my partner is too much for me, 3: maybe it's because my skills mostly work better on beginners or untrained people. Now, if I come to the 3rd conclusion, then I would want to try to develop skills that might work better on sparring partners who are a little more skilled, at least that's what I would try to do. I think that would be a more revealing and (maybe even) a more productive way to try to progress in my journey. I do understand why you can't post all of your sparring sessions (although, honestly I am a little disappointed), but I do understand the etiquette and that not everyone wants to be recorded and shown on social media (including me), I get it. Again, what got my attention was the label of the video "Hungar vs everyone else" (I think/ excuse me if I miss quoted the tag line), but it looked like you were sparring with a lot of beginners. Anyway, thanks for your reply, and best wishes to you in your journey, happy training!

    This is what i am talking about at least you guys are using gloves an hitting. But this just goes to show that this style really is not that effective in real fighting a grappler or a Thai boxer would kill this dude easy. Even a Tae Kwon do person would destroy this guy. I am not saying the art is useless but you have to train hard and for real to make you system work.

    • @HungGarEarthBender
      @HungGarEarthBender  6 років тому +6

      foxybrown2 I’m interested in your comment. I assume I am the guy you are talking about who would be destroyed by a Thai fighter or tae kwon do guy. First of all, would I stand a chance against a pro Thai fighter? Absolutely not. But I have sparred at Muay Thai gyms and I think I do pretty good.
      I love to spar and challenge others and be challenged. But honestly, I don’t like fighting. What’s the difference? In my mind when you fight you get hurt or you hurt someone else then that person can’t train and have fun anymore for a while.
      I have been hurt and have hurt others and that’s where I learned I would much rather just spar. If I can throw a nice controlled jab and touch you without hurting you; surely that takes greater skill than throwing a powerful punch at full speed. The aim of most of these fights wasn’t to injure my partners; but just show skill. That’s what training is.
