Oof, I even got a bit teary eyed reliving this album that I’ve carried with me since the early 90’s. It had such a huge impact on me as a young bullied outcast and it was one of those albums that made me want to become a writer *and I succeeded in having my first novel published last year. It was such a great watch to have someone who totally gets them react at a first listening! Thank you and thanks to The Cure for changing my life in every possible way. Next up I can recommend Faith which was released the year before Pornography ❤
They recorded drums in a large studio room with acoustic panels taken off the walls. The snare was a big parade snare beaten with thick ends of the sticks. Some cymbal crashes were recorded in a freshly built room - just bare concrete.
100 Years was done entirely on a drum machine - they apparently did a lot of work to make it sound as organic as possible. The rest of the album are actual drums though as you say.

Only the song Disintegration itself reaches this level. Next level! Now you should rate “Faith.” The color grey in all its diversity and beauty. Faith is the most beautiful shade of grey I've ever heard. emptiness painted. 🤩
This whole album is bleak perfection... but Strange Day is another thing again. This is the band that would go on to record a string of perfect songs like In Between Days, Just Like Heaven, and Fascination Street. They do that dark swirly sound better than anyone else. Love your reaction.
