A lot of the guitar melodies are actually Robert playing a Bass VI. That's what gives it the bell like sound (his recording Bass VI is actually wired a bit unusually too which helps).

The low strings on Cold is actually Robert playing a Cello (I believe slowed, to pitch it down).

please listen to Nicole Dollanganger’s “Married in Mount Airy” album. its hauntingly beautiful.

Lullaby is about a story told to Robert Smiths in his youth by his uncle (I think) with the "spiderman" in it. Nothing to do with the superhero although everyone I see reacting to disintegration gets tripped up about it. It's unfortunate that they both are named the same. When I first listened to the song conceptually it being the superhero never made sense, I had already primed myself with other songs, so I was more exposed to their lyrical style, and I thought it was a symbol for something else. Also, Fascination Street is about drugs mostly. I also thought similarly to you when I first listened to it. also, I suggest listening to either Tinderbox by Siouxsie and the Banshees Violator by Depeche Mode (although black celebration and music for the masses are good choices too) Bloodflowers by The Cure (if you want to keep the dreary cure album streak going. Although you might not like it as much, it's a bit dated but carries an equally heavy mood and I actually quite like the production despite criticism) Script of the Bridge by the Chameleons (a bit of a lower key album but it also has a similar atmospheric feel to disintegration although different)

11:00 MGMT Little Dark Age. They clearly took inspiration from The Cure. Great to see. MGMT and the Cure are both in my top 5 bands of all time.

This one grew on me with time. At first I didnt dig. But now I find that this is one of his absolute best. Also, I think that comparisons to previous albums are just so pedestrian. Like, "Its mechanical animals muxed with holy wood! Yay!". I think this is again a new reinterpretation of 70s/80s vintage art-rock, more leaning towards dark-wave, classy heavier guitars and stuff. Pretty unique blend. And songs are very different. Cool. P.s. great review!

Very cool to hear an see your reaction to this album - pornography is so intense I almost can't stand it. “One Hundred Years” with this constantly increasing intensity and drama. Only the song Disintegration itself reaches this level. Next level! Now you should rate “Faith.” The color grey in all its diversity and beauty. Faith is the most beautiful shade of grey I've ever heard. emptiness painted. 🤩

It really is a increadible album

GOTHIC at its best brother! Classic as fuck! No .1 all time!!!! Do SEVENTEEN SECONDS and FAITH. Top 5 albums are 1. Pornography 2. Faith. 3. Seventeen Seconds. 4. Songs Of A Lost World. 5. Disintegration. PORNOGRAPHY : That is a scrambled in reverse NEWS SHOW on BBC. PORNOGRAPHY back in the 80's was a taboo and you need to fight the sickness and find the CURE. Get it.

They recorded drums in a large studio room with acoustic panels taken off the walls. The snare was a big parade snare beaten with thick ends of the sticks. Some cymbal crashes were recorded in a freshly built room - just bare concrete.

Oof, I even got a bit teary eyed reliving this album that I’ve carried with me since the early 90’s. It had such a huge impact on me as a young bullied outcast and it was one of those albums that made me want to become a writer *and I succeeded in having my first novel published last year. It was such a great watch to have someone who totally gets them react at a first listening! Thank you and thanks to The Cure for changing my life in every possible way. Next up I can recommend Faith which was released the year before Pornography ❤

The Cure Trilogy consists of three of their albums, Pornography (1982), Disintegration (1989), and Bloodflowers (2000). They are all very dark. The Cure: Trilogy (Live in Berlin 2002) is a great DVD of them playing all three albums in their entirety.

you should check out mitski if you haven't already! her latest album "the land is inhospitable and so are we" is my favorite so far, you've probably heard the single from it. her albums all have their own sound, though some do more than others, it's the lyricism and emotion i love from her! so any would be good to start with :)

strangers has such beautiful lyrics and triple meanings in just one line, "if im turning in your stomach and im making you feel sick." sick from guilt, sick physically from cannibalizing her... turning in her "grave" (his stomach) due to her lack of a proper death. its so devastating yet a powerfully beautiful ending to such an amazing album.

Ok so brief story breakdown: preachers daughter follows the story of the fictional Ethel Cain, a teenage girl from Florida who grew up in a broken home, and runs away after the death of her father in hopes of escaping her religious and sexual trauma. The first song, American teenager, chronicles the days after her fathers death as she grapples with the fallout of it, leaning in to her boyfriend, Willoughby, before going out on a shoplifting spree that ends in his death in a police shootout in the song western nights. In a house in Nebraska, she reminisces her relationship with him, and mourns their end. She decides to run away from home shortly after, meeting a man named Isaiah in thouroughfare, who she falsely believes loves her, only to be used as a prostitute by him, as described in Gibson girl. Angered and distraught, she attempts to flee him, as chronicled by Ptlomea, but he catches up with, and murders her. August underground is her death rattle. Televangelism is her ascending to heaven. She remembers her life and her fight in Sun bleached flies, and finally, in strangers, in this moment in the story, Isaiah has murdered Ethel and is eating her body. Hence “freezer bride, your sweet divine, you devour like smoked bovine hide” but the REAL gag here is the line “how funny, I never considered myself tough” it’s a double entendre for the fact that her flesh is literally tough for him to chew, as is she emotionally. She forgives him in her death, still loving him, and visits her mother one last time before presumably passing away eternally at the end of the song. Hayden Anhedonia, the artists real name, wrote, produced, and sang this entire album in under 2 years time, all by herself. An absolute masterpiece by an absolute masterclass. So glad you loved it ❤

Fun fact: the synth beat in the instrumentals that begins at 9:53 is the same arc used in journey’s “don’t stop believing” Hayden used it as a sort of metaphorical mirror to the fantastical idea of the “American dream” as it is used in that song, juxtaposed against the brutal reality of it depicted in this song. A small detail that really blows your mind once you notice it!

at the end of hard times you can near her softly singing "i just wanna sleep (3x) ... please, can i sleep"in the background. it starts after the "it's just the way that you are" line. spotify misses it but google the lyrics when you listen again. to me it makes the song that much more disturbing and haunting than it already is. it's kind of a hard listen but it's so beautiful i will never skip

You should 100% react to Caroline Polachek if you haven’t already. Her voice is just as good, if not better, but more upbeat and experimental in terms of production. Her and Ethel actually toured together
