To say Tarantino is someone's favorite filmmaker doesn't require much validation. He could easily be the best filmmaker that that person has seen, and there's nothing wrong with that. To say that Tarantino is the greatest filmmaker without having exposed one's self to as many filmmakers as possible is a different story.

You have obviously never seen "City on Fire." It IS the same plot. Tarantino added a cool soundtrack, snappy dialogue and some very solid characters to this. There is absolutely no question he saw this film before making Dogs. This doesn't mean QT is a hack. He's very talented. There just seems to be a trend in his career of using others' work as more of a springboard than is usual. This is probably the most egregious example.

I think what bugged most people is that he lifted so many things from ONE movie and at least initially didnt acknowledge it. There are very obvious similarities between the two movies, anyone can see that. To deny it is foolish or just plain dumb however there is no denying that QT is an incredibly talented filmmaker. What is key with regard to Tarantino is that although he lifts stuff from other sources his own movies, at least his early ones, were always better than the stuff he was taking from so imo you would have to say fair play.

If you have seen both films, I think it would be very strange if you didn't see how Tarantino borrowed from City on Fire.
    1. It focuses on an undercover cop who infiltrates a group of jewell thieves
    2. The undercover cop develops a friendship/bond with a more experienced thief, who mentors him
    3. The undercover cop is shot in the stomach in the aftermath of the robbery
    4. The mentor sticks up for the cop when he is being accused of being a cop
    5. The mentor gets into a mexican standoff with his guns aimed at the boss, another criminal aims his gun at him
    6. The mentor kills two cops as they drive up in a cop car in the robbery aftermath - shooting multiple rounds into the windscreen with two pistols in each hand
    7. In the aftermath of the robbery, the undercover cop kills an innocent person - and is shot by that same innocent person
    8. One criminal shoots people in the jewellery store - triggered by someone setting of the alarm
    9. The undercover cop confesses that he is a cop to the mentor. The mentor then aims his gun at the undercover cop as a swarm of cops raid their hideout
I think Reservoir Dogs is a fucking amazing film. City on Fire had really strong aspects, but overall I prefer Reservoir Dogs. They are also very different films even on a story level. But there is no denying the influence/inspiration. My feeling is that Tarantino saw this film and re-imagined it.

That is commonly attributed to Picasso but that's up for debate. Year earlier TS Eliot wrote " Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; " Meanwhile,, Milton's stance on plagiarism is "For such kind of borrowing as this, if it be not bettered by the borrower, among good authors is accounted Plagiarè." I would say that Tarantino definitely "bettered" City on Fire but as to the debate whether he plagiarized or not should be moot. He clearly saw elements he liked and recycled them for his own work. I would have had no problem with this had he been up front about it but he tried to obfuscate and deny his source(s).

Akira Kurosawa borrowed heavily from John Ford, who was an idol of his, when he made one of the greatest films of all time, The Seven Samurai. John Sturges then made The Seven Samurai into The Magnificent Seven, and Eiichi Kudo lifted the final battle for his 13 Assassins from which was recently remade by Takashi Miike. All of these movies are great in their own way. Each tells the same story, but in a completely different style. Kurosawa went on to make Yojimbo which was turned into A Fistful of Dollars by Sergio Leone, and The Hidden Fortress which George Lucas borrowed heavily from for Star Wars. Every time an american action star goes flying through the air sideways blasting two guns, that's lifted directly from John Woo's Hard Boiled whether they know it or not. Film makers have been lifting types of shots, archetypal characters, stories, and even whole plot lines from their peers and idols since the invention of the medium. If you think this is wrong, you are welcome to your opinion, but don't think for a second it's an isolated incident.

Mike White, feel free to do one of these on 'Hateful 8' and 'The Rebel - Fair Game' so that credit goes where due.
I have no problem with gettin influence, but give credit where due and don't ripp other people off just because you're a bigger name. Just lost a lot of respect for Tarantino after these two "rip offs" since he apparently claimed he didn't know of (at least one) of the works.

+Silver Wolfer 21 His original script actually mentions one of City Of Fire's actors as a inspiration of the movie. He didn't edit it however so I assume the editor just forgot to put the names at the start of the film not knowing their importance. I feel Tarantino is smart in his film making. I agree some of his shots are shot for shot and sketchy at times but they're used so different in context making it it's own movie. I don't think he'll deny the influence these elements of work had on his film. He's a big movie buff and credits lots of works in interviews as influences or inspirations of his movies. I know for a fact he saw this movie before Reservoir Dogs but he told the tale very differently. Elements were changed, symbols were added, characters were altered. Everything has already been done essential. His works uses language, references and connections that only he would put into a film. His dialog is very him. I'm not gonna defends him to the core on everything but he's even admitted he's very into sampling of other works to make new works. He doesn't hide it and isn't very ashamed of it.

Reservoir dogs is a great film, but it is a remake, just like The Departed is a great film, but it also is a remake. The same story, but told by different perspectives. I was a huge fan of Tarantino when Inglorious Bastards came out, I was obscessed with his movies, but then I discovered a whole new world of filmmakers and studios that were doing what he is doing way befero him (before he was born, btw). Of course, discovering that he is not that original or that his films are not groundbreaking, best of all times and don't have deep meanings beyoung the entertaiment is a little frustating, but my opinion is that art don't serve any purpose, it musn't have a meaning, meanings are just consequences and Tarantino's films are pure art, the don't have meaning, they serve no purpose, they just exist to be admired by us. So it's no shame to say that the "originals" are better (because they are, city on fire was groundbreaking, just like Police Story and Fist Fury were before it), we just have to stop to see Tarantino as a film god, or something like that. The sooner you accept it, the better.

How does the 30% difference statute have anything to do with quality as I mentioned? I'm just saying that just because the original product wasn't of as high quality, that doesn't give someone the right to steal it just because they make it "better" As for music, I don't think borrowing another bands "sound" constitutes plagiarism. Stealing music and lyrics would. Not stylistic inspiration however. This guy below seems to think Nirvana stole from people.

As far as character goes, Budd is clearly consumed by guilt over his past - but in the end, his own desires for survival and want win out, mirroring his brother's reaction to Beatrice. I'd get into more detail, but I've not got space.
