COP on COP VIOLENCE!! in 19th c New York: The Police Riots of 1857

- In this video, I break down the economic and societal factors that shaped modern policing in new york, and the political manipulations of the police force that resulted in the largest cop against cop riot in US history.
My dad was born in NYC in 1929 and he left for WWII and never moved back. When we would visit the city he would change and I loved to see the effect the city would have on him. He would crack more jokes, laugh more, swear out the window of the car at other drivers, and he seemed more alive, more there. When it was time to go he would slowly deflate, like an old ballon, which made me want to go back to the city just to see him the way I liked as a kid. He would have loved your videos, thank you for making them.
Sounds like my grandfather and yours would have been good friends if fate had permitted.
I'm not generally a fan of AI generated images, but the ones you chose really helped tell the story.
This is what I considered the worst decade, well, the time right around the start of the civil war. Dude, you are amazing.
This channel is a gem Garrett. It's as someone said here, you are a Ken Burns in the making. Keep it up man.
Scorsese is what I was thinking, but yeah.
Funny you say that... in 2016 i actually was part of a panel Q and A w his brother ric burns at the brooklyn historical society. Back in the 90s wheb i saw ric burns doc on nyc it had an impact on me and im trying to carve out my own voice through similar presentations. Thabk yku for watching!!!
Garrett, you r doin great my man! I just watched ur worst decade in history and it's GREAT!!
I'm glad to be one of your earlier subs.
You doin great!
Keep it up!
I'm in. The art of storytelling isn't a talent that is easily had, nor a talent that should be easily rebuffed. Bravo, my good sir. I look forward your future efforts! I have neither a criticism, nor a suggestion.
I didn't notice your sub count until the video had ended and I'm glad I didn't. Production was done good enough that I didn't question your experience. Happy to be subscriber 99. 100 will follow within the hour, I'm sure.
Edit: In the time It took me to type this and refresh your sub count was at 103. Possible the algorithm has snowballed your views.
Expect more content. I am hoping to have another vid up by mid march. If i can maintain one vid per month, i think i can make get some momentum. I appreciate your engagement and well wishings.
Educating and well put together. All the best.
Man, the quality of your work, the narration, the music, and everything else is so fantastic! Can't wait for more 😊👌
I can't believe you're new to youtube- your videos are so interesting, well organized, your delivery makes for great listening. No complaints about the length here! i was engaged the whole time & wouldve watched more. if this is you with basically no practice, you were just born for this!
I hope you make more and more. I love your level of research, writing, and delivery. It reminds me of Ken Burns. I’m looking forward to your next one
Oh dont you worry. Theres more coming. I am already working on another video. Hopefully ill have it up by mid march. If youre subscribed you shld automatically be notified. I sincerely appreciate your engagement and well wishings
I think this was an excellent video. The narration and pictures followed together flawlessly. Goo job.
Hey, thanks! this positive feedback means more to me than you probably realize. The last vid i made took 2 yrs tk get 1k views so this recent felt like maybe i was wasting my time, but now i see it otherwise
Banger of a video. An interesting topic I haven't seen anyone else covering. I'd drop the political angle at the beginning. The storytelling stands on its own merits without it, and it just distracts the audience. I like the costume as well. Very appropriate to the tone.
THIS CHANNEL FRIGGIN RULES DUDE.
Long form content is the way to go bro! Better adense and watch time is the strongest metric for UA-camrs
Great video, loved the narration. My only gripe is the heavy use of AI images, I'd prefer you'd avoid them or at least make it more clear when and how often you use them. But I can understand their usage here given the lack of authentic images depicting certain events.
Glad I found your channel, I teach US History and had never heard of this event.
Cool! I love stuff I can just listen to. You have a very good voice for this.
I absolutely love the style of your work. It has a soul in it that a lot of content lacks. It’s nice to know there is a human behind it who hasn’t dumbed themselves down to the point one wonders if it is friggin AI or not.
That seems like a low bar, and maybe is not the highest compliment. Your videos have a lot more than that going for them, it’s just the first thing that came to mind.
I’m commenting again just to reiterate KEEP GOING this is legit engaging content. I feel like I’m back in school & I care about what I’m learning. Also I won’t make a video on it, but you’ve spurred my own interest to research more about this era. DUDE THANK YOU BROTHER FOR WHAT YOUR DOING
Dude. I love these videos. Honestly I wish they were longer
I am so glad this video was recommended to me, great quality, great narration and an interesting subject. Well done sir, you have gained a loyal subscriber.
I enjoy listening to videos while I'm doing chores. Yours are inspiring and fascinating. You have a unique style and voice and your content is high-quality. Good for you. I subscribed. Looking forward to more. I think you might find the videos of Jon Levi inspiring, another original creator with a unique voice and interest in history. Anyway, cheers!
Very well done, I enjoyed that and looking forward to future stories, Big love from Liverpool UK
Thank you so much. Im already working on another project and i am learning to streamline things as i go. Subscribe if you arebt already and youll ve the first to know when its done. Probably in a month or so
Another great video, huge fan! I’m excited to see what else you make!
Doing good Garret.Great history.Keep it coming.
You do good work! Your channel will blow up! Great job!
i think you're a great storyteller! keep going. when it comes to editing your videos, i'm no professional youtuber, but i think it's best to go with your flow and do what feels right. you'll correct yourself along the way naturally. keep going keep going!!
I understand the need for A.I. generated images to keep us visual learners more engrossed in the story. And I'm so glad to you see took care to identify when A.I. images were being used along side paintings and real photographs. Another Banger Gerrett ! Even if I was to see a topic that my intrest was not too keen on, I know to just shut up and watch anyway because your gonna get me intrested weither I like it or not.
You did good buddy. I enjoy it and learned a lot
Thank you
Just stumbled upon these videos you’ve put up - excellent job! You have a knack for this!
You're the voice I want telling the history of New York
First time I've seen your videos, I like your perspective and you give decent context. Keep it up, my man.
Great job, this was the second vid of yours I've watched. Keep putting in time & detail with care for the topics and the audience will grow & continue to watch.
I would like to point out there are quite a few Americans who don't know or have an odd idea of who George Washinton was/is, just sayin.
Well done episode. I'm happy I found your channel. Take care, keep safe.
I really love your channel! It is so interesting. Please keep going. Subbed today.❤❤
Fantastic job, Garrett. Wonderful imagery.
Thanks fred! So happy you watched. Working on next vid now. I think youll like it even more
Dude I just discorvered your channel, and I can’t get enough of the format. Keep doin what your doin, It’s awesome to watch.
Great video. I am glad to have come across it. It was perfect. I was totally intrigued until the very end. Very happy to be Sub #135
Thank you. Hearing this makes me feel motivated to get my next video done, which i assure you is one the way. Stay tuned and thank you for your support
An informative and enjoyable documentary about a fascinating period in the city's history. Very well done.
Facinating !!!! I enjoyed that documentry and learnd a lot . As you said nothing much has changed ; same 💩 just different names and faces. Please continue with your project 👍
Loving your content so far brother.
You have a good voice,
Good content,
And your pacing is perfect 👍
I look forward to seeing more of your work
Wasnt expecting this many views. I am humbled and pleased. I will make more but dont hold your breath. This vid took 2 months to make. Hopefully these new subscribers, or rather, the algorithm can be patient. Summer is my busy season at work so maybe i will have another vid ready by September.
Appreciated the content and a nice Walken, btw
Help this man get more subscribers. He’s a unique human, with special attributes that makes him stand out.
I enjoy a longer video and this is a very interesting subject. Never heard of this before.
I hope you are just getting started, Garret. I enjoy your content and I have subscribed to your channel.
I feel compelled to start getting serious about making more content now. I was only expecting a modest 2k views or so. So its fair to say that i am astonished that i am at close to 90k views. My work schedule is much busier in the summer season so for the next several weeks i will be in research phase as a hobby and then will probably start putting together a vid by august and then hopefully have one put out by September if life goes predictably. Stay tuned! And thank you for your interest and kind words. It motivates me more than you know. Cheers!
This brother does some awesome research to know what he's talking about and he's an awesome narrator 👍👍👍👍
Kudos! Really well done. You presented a clear time line leading up to the riot using the socio-political landscape of the age. From the Dutch to the British to independence when NYC was a sleepy fishing village to the cacophany of the arrival of the Irish. The politicians rake in the $ and keep the destitute down but there is always one man of vision whos sees the lager picture .
Where do u get the AI pics? I'm seriously interested!
Great video!
Enjoyed the whole thing!
You got a good reading voice, I could listen to you read a menu. Not Morgan Freeman perhaps, but definately easy on the ol' ear holes.
Keep em up!
Proud to be in the first 2500 subs!!
hey. I made the AI images using discords open source AI image generator thing. It is $10/month to use but costs more for advanced features like face matching, which should have done but i'm too cheap. this is why despite trying to tell a narrative w characters, the ppl appear as different ppl in each pic. it was very frustrating bc AI does what it wants. On one hand, it is genius, and will give you the exact look you prompt is you are careful w your wording commands. on the other hand it is painfully stupid bc it will randomly make the perfect image but your main character for some reason has 3 legs and if you try to reverse prompt it to have only 2 legs, it will do something dumb like take away his arms or suddenly make him bald. very frustrating.
thank you for your kind words. however, despite them i still cringe when i hear my voice played back to me. And you would take the compliment back if you ever heard me sing. lol
Another great video. Very well done‼️👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
extraordinary content. Especially given your budget. Impressive use of AI images to illustrate this history. This is clearly a passion project. you have one more new subscriber!
nice video
I like your material. It is well written and well presented. But there is one thing I would like to recommend. I would remove the commentary regarding the presidency. It really doesn't add anything to the story and it probably pushes a lot of people away who would otherwise watch. This is an election year and tempers are high, Opinions are numerous, And how you feel about the presidency is completely academic.
I think your costume added a lot to the presentation, And I would recommend more of that. I have also found that the length of a video is not really that important as long as the content is engaging. So please don't make shorter videos if it means being unable to flesh out the story. Congratulations on your introduction to becoming a youtube content maker. Best wishes
The illustrations with digital coloring such as the one at 7:10 are gloriously done. Do you happen to have a gallery of these?
I deleted all the ones i didnt use. I made most of them w AI open source software and getting the commands right was a whole other challenge unto itself.
Where i could, i used real images. In the future, if i make vids on 19th c nyc i may try to hire an illustrator to fill in the gaps bc at the end, it was near impossible to get the AI to match the scenes to the story.
Hats off to your AI image generation skills. This is some of the best work of its kind I have seen.
I just discovered your channel today and find you to be refreshing, I love the videos as well as the points you make in a world and country gone mad
Thanks dude. I didnt think my last vid would get so many views. Now im being asked to make more vids but w my work schedule i probably wont be able to put out another till September at the earliest. But i def will make more vids now. Its finally worth the effort
Your channel is so underrated. Call me crazy but I look at modern day "law enforcement" ska tax enforcement the same way these people did. Modern day red coats.
Garrett I don’t think a big a financial investment is required but more so knowledge gained from experience. For example, watching videos on audio editing? Just a random UA-camr who saw this on my home page, good job telling the story dude. And maybe less classical music? I’m not sure, I can’t suggest an alternative, again you did a good job just opening dialogue.
MORE HISTORY YOU ARE GREAT
You should do something about Moving Day
You need to be in films………. Great stuff, hightly entertaining
I was an extra in the movie "friends w benefits." I hope that counts. Srsly tho, thanks for this compliment
Excellent video man - ONE PIECE OF ADVICE: Get rid of your intros or make them 90% shorter. viewer attention is fickle, you need to capture curiosity immediately
At 7:17, is that a Victorian TV aerial?
The Irish were the first slaves in the 1600s . The info is out there but has been heavily sensored
I like the larpy intro
I like your costume - (assuming you don't always dress like this😮😊).
Thanks. The hat is actually a real parisian too hat from the 1850s and the wig makes me wish i had taken rogaine back when i still had a chance. I wish top hats wld come back tho. I love this look
I was always of the thought that the 1st police force was in Glasgow Scotland?
Also the riots based on Shakespeare will make a great video! Truely a more refined time! LoL
Yeah. The astor place riot (Shakespeare riot) is an insane story and wld make for a good video
I still may paint once the mushroom cloud goes away
18:18, the Irish were impoverished by design. No amount of hours worked (mattered). Yet the country denies that the same happened to Blacks beginning in 1620
starts 4:08
If you try to align yourself with youtube's "preferences" you'll be dissatisfied with the quality of your work. The fact you would even feel you had to apologize for making a thorough and in depth video speaks volumes about what the platform prioritizes.
Great video! But the AI photos really took me out of it. Kept seeing orcs...
And this video is 5 months old...ohh it's worse now
So is this were the NY METS got there name?
Pretty much. Its just short for "metropolitan"
You need to decide what you want your channel to be. Social commentary or a history channel.
Your Great man!
The AI is fine when used right! Don't listen to much to the haters!
There’s hundreds of thousands of new illegals in and around NYC and the five boroughs.
I loved your video on NYC in the 1970s, really great. Just some constructive criticism on this one, and the reason i couldn't get through all of it...bullshit AI images. I know AI is a reality that unfortunately the world is embracing, but it sticks out like a sore thumb and is simply lazy. I'd rather see real images repeated than see one single soulless AI image. Hope you consider this because your content and research are really really great.
@@suaveray i didnt want to use AI and cant draw for shit and dont have $ to hire illustrators and generally i agree w you. As for real images, they are near impossible to find and dint want to just linger on one image for minutes on end.
All the fake AI generated photos kinda ruins the video.
the use of ai for images in the context of historical depictions is greatly discourageable
Im inclined to agree. I wanted to try it out bc ive seen a lot of cool things done w AI but in this case, it was more frustrating than was worth it. There were, however, too many images i needed that i simply had no access to and thought AI wld fill the gaps but it was so annoying to work with and difficult to get the results i wanted.
totally fair, given how much visual 'dead air' a video essay can have; but having some kind of watermark or indicator on each instance of ai would avoid a lot of confusion@@garrettshore
Cut the intro. You'll never convince me the every irish American that came during the fammie they knew much about America other than milk and honey.
Could do without the larpy intro
