19 January 2019. Always and forever, thank you to Great Britain and the British people whose creativity, since the 1960s, has given the rest of the World hundreds of unique bands such the Siouxsie And The Banshees and music of unparalleled beauty, quirkiness and atmosphere. What would our lives have been without British bands? Thank you from Sicily. And love, admiration and adoration.

Siouxsie is such a phenomenal vocalist, and so expressive in her movements. Severin, Budgie and Robert Smith really make for perfect accompaniment. Another group gone there will never be a substitute for their greatness.

Are people REALLY comparing Siouxsie to Gaga ? That's like comparing a 5 lb Lobster tail drenched in butter to a McDonald's Filet 'O Fish.

Heard Siouxsie first in '81 and was hooked ever since - there hadn't been a band quite like them and this song was strangely my favourite for years. Incidentally, she is taller than Robert Smith.
Budgie is underrated - so few drummers are creative enough to NOT use standard 2 and 4 beats - he often created a drum piece

Robert Smith once stated that until he heard the Banshees he just wanted to be in a band that sounded like Buzzcocks. They were his biggest influence and working with them a huge privilege.

Beautiful song. Outstanding in every respect-melody, vocal, lyrics, production, musicianship..

According to what the songwriters have shared, this song is about devolution. It's about a culture that punishes its youth by death if they are suspected of extra-marital sex. Tragically, seahorses in the nearby ocean are kinder parents than these people. This sympathetic song is so beautiful and still makes me cry!!

amazing sound! amazing singer! it reminds me when i was 20yrs.........a strange and in the mean time fantastic period. The Berlin wall, the dualism btwn usa and urss... fear of nuke ( du remember the film the day after?) the Tacher in UK ....sorry Im talking like an old man but siuxie represents a period were the singers re really able to sing and the session man were really music player ( have you noted bob smith ?). May be i was young , may be Siuxie is outstending but ......WHO IS GAGA ????

+MetteC5 The show, TOTP2, is playing old Top of the Pops clips from the 70s, 80s. TOTP2 is a fairly recent show, like only 10 or so years old.

@leesaulsify Now listen here you. Did it ever occur to you that reason why some people don't care for or don't like Lady Gaga at all is because she's given FAR too mcuh press?? That's she's talked about nearly EVER single blody day?? And another thing, if you love Lady Gaga so much, why are you even watching this video? You a troll or something???

Someone earlier said it's about a horrible subject. I see it as being about sex and its sometimes torturous intensity (and the refrain being about sperm being released). Too bad there's the TOTP junk on top of this great performance.

@elm1230 It was the format of the Top Of The Pops show. They forced everyone to do it. American Bandstand used to do the same thing.
For the best anti-lip-sync moment in history look up Johnny Rotten's performance with Public Image Limited on American Bandstand. He told them he wouldn't lip sync. They tried to force him so he agreed. Then when the show went live he just started walking through the audience talking with fans and not singing as his vocals played on the tape.

  • @theselector4733

Lot of comments on here & other Siouxsie videos comparing her/them with modern singers/Pop acts. It's not valid comparing as Siouxsie & Banshees were an "alternative" band & still are. There were Pop singers in her era as well ie. ABBA , Bay City Rollers , Madonna , Bucks Fizz , Kim Carnes etc.... it would be more apt comparing Gaga , J-Lo , Beyonce....to these acts & not Siouxsie.. Wat the Banshees were doing at the time was different , groundbreaking and left of centre.....In other words GREAT

  • @hanzelheidi

Dude, cut the man some slack!
The man is 50, and yep he is a bit rounder around the middle than 10 years ago.
But that isn't what is important here!
His voice is still as sublime as it was 20 years ago!
Whereas, most performers voices have lost their clarity...Robert has been fortunate to NOT have lost his.
His is still making awesome music and still able to perform as he did 20 years ago.
Body weight can always be lost...voices can never be regained once they start to fade.

I really like the fact that this band always experimented with their music and came up with new things. I didn't like them at first, but something about them still intrigued me, and I gave their music a chance until it grew on me. Something for which I'm now grateful for. They opened me up to other artists who make "strange" and "unusual" music.

They're the type of band that the more you listen to their music closely, the more interesting they become. They have so many deep album cuts that are work of arts in my humble opinion. Just also attempt to always have an open mind with their music.

i discover at that ancient time (1984) this band with that magical album "hyaena" one of their best albums ! Siouxsie have an amazing voice...with..power and sensuality. for me she have 5 great lps : "hyaena" (1984), "tinderbox"(1986), "peep show" (1988), "superstition" (1991) and the great live album "nocturne" from (1983) with Robert smith in the band............

  • @boabaobab
    @boabaobab 15 років тому

No, I don't think it should be like that. And she isn't separating women and men here for nothing; it's important in order to the issue to come across. If you think of this song wider than being a commentary on the stone-throwing tradition, it could be about insincerety and disguising one's cruelty towards another person. Those themes haven't got anything to do with gender.

  • @Skull4Scavenger
    @Skull4Scavenger 15 років тому

Shame it is a playback. but nevertheless: a mesmeric beautifull song. It is about that males should carry the unborn child and take in all the responsability that goes along with it. Seahorses ("swimming horses") do it different. In their species, the male carries the unborn ones. Food for thought....???

  • @boabaobab

"Feel the cruel stones breaking her bones". Somewhere it's an acceptable punishmenf to throw stones at a person if she is unmarried and pregnant, like in this Swimming Horses case. The consequences of e.g. adultery can be a lot harsher to women than to men there.

I think it's about the cultures in which the male family members take care of their female siblings, while at the same time girls can get into serious trouble because of shame issues etc. It criticizes double standards?

Hey dead bat, be yourself, do not believe in role models. Siouxsie did not belive in role models. That is why she became what she is. Be inspired by her, but she would not aprove in being a role model. I guarentee you. Love.

"When the still sea conspires an armor
and her sullen and aborted currents breed tiny monsters
    True sailing is dead
    Awkward instant
and the first animal is jettisoned
    Legs furiously pumping
    their stiff green gallop
    and heads bob up
    Poise
    Delicate
    Pause
    Consent
    In mute nostril agony
    Carefully refined
    and sealed over"
