Pace has more to do w/ team scoring than individual scoring. In NBA history, there have only been four instances in which the 10th best scorer of the season averaged at least 25.0 points: 1972, 2006 (three players w/ 30+ ppg), 2017, & 2019. Though requirements for percentage of games played were reduced after the 2013 season. Still, I agree that this particular season for Kobe has become underrated over the years. Also, you just reminded me of MJ getting snubbed from the All-Defensive Team in '87 despite becoming the first player in NBA history to record 200+ steals w/ 100+ blocks. The same feat that won him the DPOY a year later. **smh**
Excellent points. Kobe should’ve definitely been the MVP in that year. Dude was unguardable and putting up 35 a game in a defensive era with shitty teammates. He also had the stigma working against him also. He was still in the process of trying to win a lot of the fans and the media back over from “the incident” in a certain city.

great video. Kobe is the goat because of everything you pointed out in this video. After this incredible 06 season, he followed it up with 31.6 ppg in 07 and in my opinion should've been the MVP of that season as well. He carried a team with Kwame, Smush Parker, Luke Walton, a young Lamar Odom, and Chris Mihm but kept the Lakers at a 7 seed and nearly upsetting the Suns in 07. People always talk about blowing a 3-1 lead but that Suns team was overall way better. We all remember Kobe hitting the winner in Game 4 at Staples and then in Game 6 Kobe scored 50 at home in an OT loss, before losing in 7. As soon as Kobe got 1 all-star (Pau Gasol) in a loaded Western Conference he goes to the Finals 3 years in a row winning 2 BACK to BACK...GOAT Shit! I'm not mad at anybody saying MJ is the GOAT but to me, I grew up on Kobe and to me, he is the GOAT.
I feel 06-07 is even more underrated. Kobe started the season with a somehow different role, more simalar to 07-08, at least in term of offense: decreased usage rate vs 06, getting his squad more involved, 28 ppg until mid-season (they were at some point 26-13 if I remember correctly). Then Odom and Walton went down, the team started to lose and he had to turn it up offensively. This resulted in a 10 50 point games season (to my count, the most ever by "Non-Wilts" in a single season).
MomJessicaandJordan Richardson definitely not 2013. Bron was on a whole different level that season. Bro shot 57 percent from the field and 40 percent from three

@@kwamebrown5437 It doesn't even mean you're the most valuable tbh, not by the current criteria at least. The voters should also be changed, i never understood why sportswriters and broadcasters are the voters. I don't think it should be the players either, as I think players can suffer from biases. They should redefine the criteria and make a team, completely dedicated to evaluating who the MVP is.
The NBA not given MVP to Kobe in 06 is one of the most blasphemous and disrespectful acts to a player of Kobe's caliber. They should be ashamed of themselves. I haven't seen an NBA legend disrespect and disregard like Kobe. Thank you for doing this video an and putting respect on the Mamba's name.
@Jonny Arnett, I have been a huge fan of your channel! I hope this request gets noted. Can you make a video about these neverending debates about LBJ and KD if they will become more dominant if they played in the 80's and 90's era? That would be very interesting to know. I like how you discuss everything because you discuss it with a context. Thank you in advance.
I think his 07 season is his most underrated. He started off the season coming off of off season surgery and tried to not shoot as much. But the 2nd half of the season he went even crazier with his scoring than even the 06 season.
Great Topic. A Remarkable Season that doesn't get discussed enough in NBA social circles. Truly enjoy watching these discussions about Kobe because it makes it feel like his presence is still here with us.
Once you put the context to Kobe's number then you realize how ridiculous his numbers are. These advantage metric that consider scoring averages of teams and percentage of team points scored really show how monsterous he was in the 06 Season. Initially I found it hard putting it into words how great of a scorer he is but this definitely shows it. Nice work!
kobe should have won MVP in 2006 and Chris Paul should have won it in 2008. Both got screwed and got screwed again when David Stern wouldn't allow Chris Paul to join the lakers
2005-06 is the season Kobe should have won MVP not his 2007-08 season. The 08 season was a lifetime achievement award for Kobe. In 2008 Garnet and CP3 had better seasons than Kobe.
I super like this video and how you analyze it. Its a complete mvp rob to kobe. I just dont understand why the nba and media treated kobe like this, like the time when lakers was supposed to get cp3 and david stern vetoed it. But after that they start allowing to superteam.its just sad.
Dude, this analysis is terrible. You don't compare a player's PPG to league average to compare across eras, you use per 75 possessions and rTS%. Also, Kobe was a minus on defense in 2006. It was literally his worst defensive year by D-PIPM and other defensive metrics. This is some social media analysis. Start using respectable stats such as win shares, TS%, WS/48, PIPM, RAPTOR or box creation or leave the proper analysis to Thinking Basketball and Basketball Examined.
Yea Kobe was pretty amazing that year. He did all that playing with Smush, Kwame, and Walton.....and that was the starting lineup. Somehow the Lakers management put together a roster who can field players WORSE than that. That's amazing to me and definitely not in a good way.
To determine an MVP you have to ask yourself could {insert team name} win without {insert player name}. If you think about it being an MVP is not only determined by your shear skill but by the skill of your teammates. Maybe there was a worst team and a player that was essential to that team and thats why they won MVP in 06
Can u do a video of the seasons of all the players who made all NBA and all defense in the same season. And who won the MVP during those seasons and why. Would be one of the best
Could you make the underrated argument for Dwyane Wade? Maybe highlight his achievements and put them into context with other Guards or All time greats? I feel he was a highlight machine, good on defense and offense, and is underlooked due to his injuries and for taking a backseat to James. Also i think 2008-2009 season MVPshould have been his, considering what you said in this video about them disregarding players who didn’t have a top Team. But i think you could prove me wrong. Just saying, would be a fun discussion.
Disagree. If anything Kobe's stats were inflated. The league was adjusting to defending scorers under the new rules (which were specifically designed to INCREASE scoring) so it became hunting season for scorers and offensive players. Kobe, Lebron and Iverson all set career highs for scoring in 05-06. Once the league adjusted to the new rules, Kobe's average settled back down to 27-28 ppg. Further proof, is that refs may call it tighter in the regular season, but the playoffs are a different story. More physical play is allowed. That is the reason that for all Kobe's scoring, he has only ONE 50 point game in the playoffs (50 in OT vs. Phoenix) and only 13 games of 40 or more in the playoffs. In comparison Lebron also has just one 50 pt play off game, Iverson has four, and Jordan has EIGHT. In 40 point playoff games in comparison to Kobe's 13, Lebron has 27, and Jordan has 38. Officials were calling tighter fouls so Kobe Lebron, Iverson and D Wade also set career highs for free throw attempts. Wade attempted a whopping 97 free throws in six NBA Finals games, which was 27 MORE than Jordan's highest Finals total.
To be fair, his defense was overrated. He got many of those all defense teams off of his reputation. But yea, its ridiculous that he finished 4th in the mvp race. It also puts into perspective just how crazy mj's '88 season was. The guy won the mvp, averaged 35 ppg on 53% and won the dpoy.
But just to add on MJ in 87 had slightly better Rebounds and assists than Kobe in 05 and better Steals #. Despite Kobe's great output he only shot .45 from the field compared to Mike's .53 which is significant. Also Mike made All Defensive First Team and All NBA team in 87 as well.
According to my metrics, per36minutes, increasing his teams pace of 90.6 to 2020 median pace of 100.3, and assuminh he’d average 12+free throws, Kobe would average 37/5/5 in 36 minutes. In my personal Siri, if Smush Parker can rotate to Tim Thomas in game five, the Lakers illuminate the Phoenix Suns. They destroy the clippers in five games and go into a seven game battle against the Mavericks, in which the Lakers advance to go up against the Miami Heat in the 2006 finals
Is the word "underrated" ruining UA-cam? or is UA-cam ruining the word "underrated"? It's lost all meaning. Not everything/everyone can be "underrated".
The MVP criteria is definitely weird. A 60+ win record is a team accomplishment, while the MVP is an individual award. The best player on the best team should not win MVP unless he was clearly the best player in the league that season. Team success is important, but the current criteria gives an unfair advantage to all stars on stacked teams. Kobe definitely should have won MVP in 2006.
You must understand the value is in winning. So the MVP goes to the player who's play contributed the most to winning. The Westbrook MVP was an anomaly only bc he avg a triple double
MVP is a player award not team if u take Kobe off that team they’d be garbage same if u took Steve Nash off his team but they’d still win more than the lakers lakers needed kobe cause without him they wasn’t winnin 20 games tops I said that wit Westbrook to if u take him n James harden off there team in 2017 rockets would still win more games than Okc even if it’s jus 5 more games harden had more shooters helping him Westbrook deserved mvp so does kobe
Well let's take a time machine back to 2006, many people in the media hated Kobe because of the rape accusation which hurted him in many respects. If that didn't happen possibly the narrative would have been different and this season would have been more highly regarded. This isn't the only reason why this season or Kobe's career is not appreciated like others on his level but this has to be acknowledged (sadly).
I really do think the only reason why he didn't win MVP in '06 was bc of the Colorado rape allegation. This season provides how great Kobe was. In what must've been one of the darkest periods of his life, dude dug in his heels and went to another place, with the one true love of his life. I'll never forget this season. @@IchifateThe NBA was faster paced back then but it wasn’t that much faster paced than today. His statistics were somewhat inflated, however they weren’t that inflated. Adjusting for pace and MPG, he still would’ve averaged a ridiculous amount today. The competition was bad even though he played against Bill Russell, Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, Elgin Baylor, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bob Cousy, Bob Pettit, Willis Reed, Walter Bellamy, Nate Thurmond, and more. And he couldn’t win not because he was stat padding and a bad teammate, but because his team was almost always heavily outmatched by Bill Russell’s Celtics with 6 HOF teammates and Red Auerbach who is on the Mount Rushmore of head coaches. When he had a good coach and a good team, he won his 2 championships.
Happy Birthday Gigi Bryant.

Love how all NBA stats need a non-wilt asterisk
This is how you use stats in the proper context. Clearly this guy knows his basketball, very refreshing.

Kobe most def should have won it that season. No contest
great video.
1 all star is all he needed in an era of big 3s. From 2007 - 2018 only big 3s won championships, except for Kobe and Dirk
Who Asked exactly these idiots don’t know how to separate their personal bias from facts.
His whole career underrated he only have 3 MVPs
Actually only one MVP
The most underrated Kobe's season was 2002-03 when he had avg. 30.0 ppg and didn't won MVP. I wasn't his fan but he deserved for that.
Kobe should have 3 MVPs in my opinion. 2002-03, 2005-06 and 2012-13

I think his 07 season is his most underrated. He started off the season coming off of off season surgery and tried to not shoot as much. But the 2nd half of the season he went even crazier with his scoring than even the 06 season.
One of the greatest seasons I seen from any player Ive ever seen, and so entertaining this guy was box office
Rest In Peace Kobe forever in our hearts 🙏🏾
Great Topic. A Remarkable Season that doesn't get discussed enough in NBA social circles. Truly enjoy watching these discussions about Kobe because it makes it feel like his presence is still here with us.
Once you put the context to Kobe's number then you realize how ridiculous his numbers are. These advantage metric that consider scoring averages of teams and percentage of team points scored really show how monsterous he was in the 06 Season. Initially I found it hard putting it into words how great of a scorer he is but this definitely shows it. Nice work!
Simply great. Cannot believe that this is not even in the top TEN best seasons in the NBA. Great Content man!!
kobe should have won MVP in 2006 and Chris Paul should have won it in 2008. Both got screwed and got screwed again when David Stern wouldn't allow Chris Paul to join the lakers
#8 Kobe Bryant would kill #24 Kobe Bryant on the court. #8 was in his athletic prime and a much better defender than #24.
Kobe definitely deserved MVP.. or the league should hand out a Most Outstanding Player award than
2005-06 is the season Kobe should have won MVP not his 2007-08 season. The 08 season was a lifetime achievement award for Kobe. In 2008 Garnet and CP3 had better seasons than Kobe.
No they didn't, people forget CP3 had a young David west who was averaging 20+. Kobe deserved the MVP 03, 06, and 08.
Definitely agree that Kobe Bean deserved the 06 MVP
2003 was underrated too. Kobe actually picked it as his prime form
No question Kobe should have gotten MVP that season. Great content as usual.

2006 could be the best season we seen by a single player without knowing it
I super like this video and how you analyze it. Its a complete mvp rob to kobe. I just dont understand why the nba and media treated kobe like this, like the time when lakers was supposed to get cp3 and david stern vetoed it. But after that they start allowing to superteam.its just sad.
Wilt may have been so good that everyone ignores him, but Kobe was up there with him
Yes That Season was BEAUTIFUL ✊🏾
The Lakers cost them selves 2 more championships not getting Kobe help in 05,06,and 07
You say it as if it's as easy as snapping your fingers
Pre Law would have been lol.

For real. He scored 81 at a time when scoring was a lot more difficult. In today’s league he definitely would have scored 100.
Yea Kobe was pretty amazing that year. He did all that playing with Smush, Kwame, and Walton.....and that was the starting lineup. Somehow the Lakers management put together a roster who can field players WORSE than that. That's amazing to me and definitely not in a good way.
Kobe will always be great rip Mamba🙏🏽 just imagine Kobe in the starting line up in today LA Lakers 🔥🔥🔥 unstoppable

Kobe got robbed out of 2-3 MVP's. The name of the award doesn't match who they always give it to. Change the name.
Not really
'93 and '97 were wrongly given to Barkley and Malone, respectively.
Thank you for making this video!
Even if you included Wilt, when adjusted for pace, Kobe had the highest scoring season ever
