      Verry clearly she is. The characters don't need to look into the camera and state something so blatantly obvious. Aside from Anya who's actually been shown refusing to help others financially, there's no reason to think all of these characters wouldn't do anything they can to help eachother.

      @@wisewillowgames The show has no interest in their jobs so it doesn't bring them up, that doesn't mean they don't have them it just means they are not relevant to the story being told. All that matters is there isn't enough money for a group of college aged kids to pay for an entire suburban house in California.. which is entirely reasonable.
      If they were actually stealing or freeloading that actually would be relevant and show would actually have stated that. but it doesn't, and it doesn't even hint at it being true. The idea that any of the scoobies are maliciously exploiting Buffy financially is 100% fanfiction thats just not supported by the show itself.

    To Spidey's comment about Riley could have done all this without involving Buffy - That is probably true.
    But Riley is supposed to be the opposite of Angel. When Angel came back to Sunnydale that one time to do a job, he interacted with everyone EXCEPT Buffy, she didn't even know until the very end of the episode and was like "Wtf? Angel was here?!"
    So Riley showing up and immediately contacting Buffy, I think, is supposed to represent part of that "Anti-Angel" aspect of him. And for story-telling purposes it allowed Buffy to get closure.

    Understand Spike has no soul, while he can act like he is a good person he does not have anything inside him to say “hey don’t do that it’s wrong” outside of past experiences. So he knows and remembers how it felt to love and do the right thing but at the same time he doesn’t really feel bad or guilty when he does wrong. It shows how his motivation for something isn’t based on morality and it’s a good comparison to say Angel who does right because he feels guilty for his past wrongs as opposed to Spike who does right because he thinks it’s what others would like him to do and can benefit him.

    • @lemmyelk
      @lemmyelk 6 місяців тому +24

      Another way I look at it, Angel was a drunken Irishman from a different time. His soulless self is different than Spike's. Spike was a sensitive lad so some of that lingers. Its kind of like in Romero's dawn of the dead where the zombies just instinctively go to the mall. Or in the Community parody where Jeff is still texting on his phone as a zombie. That's how I see it.

    • @Wezt334
      @Wezt334 6 місяців тому +5

      @@lemmyelk ah but for me there in lies the rub, remember based on the the Buffy universes own lore a vampire is a soulless demon who possesses a corpse. The demons themselves have no real personalities, feelings or emotions and are effectively animalistic (as evidenced by Angel when in Pylea) and instead take on the qualities of the persons persona through their former memories however they have no basis or foundation for those memories. So yes Spike would remember the memories of William being in love and being a sensitive person but the demon would not be able to feel or express those feelings itself only replicate the mannerisms and appearance of them. To give a very basic example it would be like watching a recording of someone dancing to a song, you can replicate their movements and you can see they were enjoying themselves but you cannot feel the same way they did as they were dancing at the time of the recording. It’s part of what makes the next few episodes so interesting because Spikes actions are based on doing what is viewed from his perspective as love without actually knowing what that is or having the moral conscious to rationalise those decision (******SLIGHT SPOILER*******………….it also helps remove some of the blame for the audience). They do however make this part of their own lore somewhat muddy with the next season but at that point they were digging themselves out of a hole with limited episodes to do it in.

    Solid reaction to a simple but important episode. What is often overlooked is the world that Buffy now inhabits. Duality has been an important storyline in BTVS from the start . 2 episodes ago the Buffy/ Faith personas were on display. This episode is so the Buffy/Joyce worlds and choices.A typical 21 year old single Mother will not have a 16 year old girl to parent and a 21 year old recovering addict to provide for but that’s Buffy’s world. She works at a miserable job with irritating people to make money. Then after work, patrol and vanquish evil wearing her chicken/ cow hat. She is using Spike for sex to have some feeling and connection to life. Having Riley return is someone that has no connection to her present world or the cause of her situation. Riley is from a time when Joyce was alive, Giles was there to be her Watcher, and she was not in a deep depression. Buffy was heroic and had no shame or reason to hide anything. It was the actions of Willow and the Scoobys that have placed Buffy in this world. Joyce is dead, Giles has left her (like her Father) and she has the responsibility of being in charge of Dawn. It is Riley that can be the one to get Buffy thinking about her life before her death again. It’s Riley that can tell her she can become the strong independent woman again. Spike wants her to remain the same and frankly, The Scoobys don’t want to take the responsibility for their actions. They have been with Buffy when it’s a simple fight against evil but… Buffy has said many times ,You really don’t know what a Slayer is. Except for Tara, no one acknowledges Buffy’s depression. This has really been Buffy doing the hard work. This episode she took the opportunity to recognize and admit she has been using and abusing Spike.Very strong. She now has to understand what it takes to be a single Mother, like the way she remembers Joyce.

    'Getting her mojo back' was EXACTLY the point of this episode. Until now, she's been tormented by the memory of heaven, 'going thru the motions', but not truly sure of herself or resigned to being alive. Riley was the 'turning point' that reminds her of who she was before all this, and who she still is inside. The point of his return, contrasted against the backdrop of her life of fast food, bills, and empty sex with someone she doesn't love while battling idiotic nerds, just spells out that she spent the season disconnected from herself, floundering and too exhausted to try for more. Riley, as flawed as he may have been, makes her remember how alive she can be, because he never stopped seeing her as a hero and never doubted for second how much she could do. I did like that she called Spike by his name when she ended it. She showed incredible respect to the person mingled with the soulless demon in him. As I mentioned before, Spike is more himself than most vamps...his passions overwhelm even his demon side, the intensity of his feelings puts him apart from the rest of the demon herd. It may be hard to remember it in a couple episodes or so, but try to remember the Spike at the start of this season, who spent months guarding Dawn because of a promise he made to Buffy, even with no hope of seeing her again...no reward in sight, just because of his own intense sense of personal obligation. It will help...some. There IS something there more than a monster...but its an invisible battle between William and his demon.

    • @Junejane4
      @Junejane4 5 місяців тому

      Are you kidding? In fact we saw how Riley complained that Buffy was stronger than him, which is in her nature, that's who she is, complained that she didn't love him and even when he went to search for a company for himself and she found out instead of apologizing for this bullshit he immediately manipulated the situation and started blaming her for that and gave an ultimatum that if she didn't tell him that she loved him after THAT, he would leave. And he left. And he did all this during a very difficult period in her life. And got married within a year. This is like a joke. What does she need to remember, what does she need to come back to? This? That's the wrong person to remind her.
      I wouldn't care about this character at all and wouldn't comment anything about him since his plotline didn't work and that's why they removed him but when I see that every time people act like they didn't see it with their own eyes and portray the character as something he was not it annoys me. For what? What's the point of being played so easily every time? They show you one thing , then the opposite and it works with people every time. As if yesterday doesn't exist.

    • @Samaelthekind
      @Samaelthekind 5 місяців тому +1

      @@Junejane4 I feel like you missed the core of the point there...we agree, but I'll spell it out more clearly. Riley absolutely WAS immature and demanding, his ego was fragile and he needed someone who needed him, not just wanted him. But at the core of that was an acknowledgement, even early on, that she was able to stand alone, she was the real hero...and he wasn't cut out to be a sidekick. He was a two season love interest that was doomed from the start...you're right, but the point was that his return as a cameo in S6 created a moment of reflection...where Buffy gets a glimpse back at who she was through someone else's eyes. A little reminder that even death and bills and greasy diner stoves should not slow her down, or make her compromise. She shifts from accepting the grind to starting her way back to being 'alive'.

  • @HelloXrancidkitteh
    @HelloXrancidkitteh 3 місяці тому +1

    as far as I've seen, no one's mentioned this so I'm going to: I believe Spike's reasoning for having and selling those eggs were his warped way of trying to get money for Buffy. he's hated she's been having to work at the Double Meat Palace and has told her a couple times to leave it, that he will find a way to get her money. I think he was secretly trying to earn her some, knowing what he was doing was bad and she'd oppose to it, and was going to surprise her with the money once he sold them all. it was also a reminder that, although he believes he loves Buffy, he still has no soul. no moral compass. we needed that reminder.
    Also, no matter your feelings about Riley, he was finally NEEDED in this episode by Buffy in ways he wasn't even aware of. she needed that reminder of who she is. she couldn't get it from her friends or sister, they're all dealing with their own personal stuff ( Xander and Anya preoccupied with wedding planning, Willow trying her hardest to kick her magic addiction, and Dawn dealing with her own trauma from season 5 and having abandonment issues from losing both her mom and Buffy not even a month apart and ever since Buffy has been back, she's been distant. Tara's the only one she's opened up to but Tara doesn't know Buffy as much as the others do. she can only do her best at being supportive )
    ( thirdly, I love Sam and I love that we got good closure on RIley, to know he's moved on and happy with someone who needs him in a way he's been wanting. she even gave Willow some more inspiration to keep fighting the addiction too ) sorry about the long comment, for anyone whose reading lol.

    There's a theory that I love to put out there anytime someone is talking about this episode. The theory is that Riley was at Buffy's house when her and Spike had sex outside (so we get a strange, far away camera angle). So he decided to make her see sense. He swooped in all heroic missiony, talking about "I need the best", flirting with her and withholding that he was married, and he framed Spike as the Doctor, who was actually holding them for a friend. The theory is backed up by the subtext of the stuff her coworker talks about (Machiavelli and President Johnson), the fact that Riley didn't seem particularly surprised to see Buffy in bed with Spike, and the things that Sam mentions about the Doctor: an international arms dealer with higher up connections who has already traded money on this deal - does that sound like Spike? Not to mention, if he had made deals like this before, he should have known the eggs needed to be refrigerated (weird detail they threw in there for no real reason), which Riley knew, so why was he hunting for the Doctor in crypts?
    This episode makes very little sense when you try to break it apart and look at everything. But the breakdown I saw of this theory explains basically everything perfectly. I think the writers did it on purpose, but it's never been confirmed that I know of.

    Great little comedy openers here with the Vampire not wanting to touch Buffy because of the smell of burgers off her at The Doublemeat Palace, and then Willow and Dawn noticing the grass stains on Buffy's clothes after another rough session with Spike. The bombshell of Riley returning can't really save this episode as I think it is very much 5/10 effort, a bit of a filler really. Once Buffy realises Riley is married she turns to Spike again, this time it almost seems like desperation as she asks Spike to say 'do you love me' and ask him again does he want her. It just seems that Buffy wants to be with Spike because Riley has returned, and when Riley catches them, it is awkward except for Buffy and Riley, but not for Spike who is reveling in the situation. Riley of course is right here in that he explains to Buffy that Spike is still amoral, soulless and dangerous. The overall plot of this episode is quite ropey, but interesting exchanges at the end with Riley and Buffy, and of course when Riley and Sam eventually do leave on the chopper, Willow waving them off but says 'what a bitch' trying to give some form comfort to Buffy. At the very end we feel Buffy is doing the right thing ending it with Spike, and uses his real name William, a throwback to S5 Fool For Love, in which Cecily cruelly rejected him.

    When Sam says it took Riley a year to get over Buffy, why do people assume they didn't get married until after he got over Buffy? Plenty of people are not really "over" their X when they get married. They sometimes talk about them more than they should, think about them more than they should, I suspect that she helped him finish getting over Buffy after they got married...
    I figure the year it took him to get over Buffy and the 4 months they have been married overlap by a couple months.

    The disgust concerning Riley is unwarranted, even if the suck jobs were a clear allegory to cheating. Leaving his military carreer and his whole life to become an accessory to Buffy was obviously and realistically bound to fuck with him, and it's been well established wayyy beforehand.
    Doesn't make him justified in seeking comfort with litteral demons and letting his insecurities get the better of him, but almost everyone in the show end up spiraling into some crazy unhealthy coping mechanism at one point or another.
    (SPOILERS) What willow does this very season (before even Seeing Red) is a thousand times worse, at least Riley was only ever self-destructive.
    To quote Xander, y'all treated him like the rebound guy from the get go, just because he was too "bland".

    Though some fans argue otherwise, it wasn't about being insecure with Buffy. It's that Buffy didn't share her feelings with Riley even at those low points with Joyce being sick and dealing with Dawn being the Key. She lone wolfed it and left Riley feeling like she was pushing him away

    So, I read that some believe that the reason Spike had those eggs, was that he was trying to make money for Buffy to help her out. That he thought he could sell them before they hatched. But I love how Buffy were able to just be real with Spike in the end and make the choice for herself to end it and to try and feel better.

    Funniest theory I ever read about the show was Riley planting the eggs in Spike's crypt because he turned up in Sunnydale and saw Buffy and Spike have sex against the tree and was jealous. The lengths Spike fans go to to excuse his behaviour.

  • @Buffy8Fan
    @Buffy8Fan 5 місяців тому +3

    Pat, Buffy did go to college. She left because Dawn needed taking care of. The point of what Dawn told Xander in the episode _Doublemeat Palace_ is that these kind of jobs are all she'll be able to have as long as she is the slayer and has to take care of Dawn also.
    Riley shows up in a turtleneck. Ya know, last time he wore one of those he was hiding his vampire bite issues.
    Suraj is right, he and Buffy should be discussing their issues, whether Riley is married or not. It should be one of many things they do talk about, and they don't. Riley may wake Buffy up from her state of depression, but by the time he leaves town, he and Buffy's issues are no better than when he left in _Into the Woods._
    Spike being the doctor hardly seems a blip on Sunnydale problems that Riley and the army make it out to be. And considering Buffy could have used the money Spike claims he was going to get and give to her for said eggs (as Buffy still has friends living under her roof not contributing to rent), I understand his motivations, even if at the end of the day there was selfishness of wanting to not loose sleeping with her. Sadly, his idea of how to get the money (combined with Riley being a wakeup call for Buffy) was the exact reason why Spike did lose her.
    Spidey is right that you don't really need Buffy for what he was doing. He had issues that, from his and Buffy's past's perspectives couldn't guarantee her help, and their issues made it uncomfortable. And as stated earlier, they left off no better on said about each other than before. In that regard, he was lucky she had depression issues because it meant she back-burned issues that would have been at the forefront (and a major problem) if she wasn't depressed.
    Riley definitely married Sam without being over Buffy. He also married her because she is willing to placate his affirmational love language issues, and is more on his fighting skill level than Buffy was , which he always had problems with.
    Sadly, if Joss wasn't the %&$# he was, this show wouldn't be as good. I think a lot of pop culture works that way. The issues of real people drive how well done pop culture all is.

  • @jonathan-d4d
    @jonathan-d4d 5 місяців тому

    Riley not telling Buffy he was married is a strain, but okay. Him not telling her about needing to track the demon rather than kill it is ridiculous. It’s a pattern this season: they need to kick Buffy when she’s down, and kick her again when she tries to get up, so they create contrived situations to frustrate and humiliate her. Maybe it’s just a consequence of Joss Whedon leaving as show runner so he could start Firefly and oversee three shows at once.

People focus on the "suckjobs" part like it was the first thing he messed up and her pulling away didn't make all the sense in the world (he was always like this and it would have an effect on anyone going through the illness and eventual loss of a parent to have a partner that repeatedly omits information).
