    I brought a mini battery booster/jump starter for my car that has 2 USB ports on it. Runs the field recorder and video camera for a weekend, recharges off a 240v inverter plugged into the car's 12v if I'm out any longer or using it to run an inverter for the laptop. Sits neatly under the tripod, fits in my camera bag and kicks 36 flavors of crap out of your average power bank. Oh and it'll start the car if I run the main battery flat using far too many gadgets while camping.
    I've also got a SmartLav+ and my first accessory for it was the TRRS to TRS adapter. Utterly awesome mic for the price, stoked to know the H4n has the 3.5mm input to get the full use out of it.

      It's been over a year since I released this video and I still use my H4nPro every video I shoot. Currently, I use the H4n Pro as the Audio Gain between my DSLR and Rode Filmmaker Kit. The gains in the H4n Pro make this an investment that has paid for itself. I don't even use it to record! All audio is recorded via the DSLR :)

    you don't need the special power cable, you can use a standard mini usb cable (the same one you'd use to plug it into a computer) - it draws power over usb, works great, no special cable needed.

  • @3dPrintCreator
    @3dPrintCreator 7 років тому +1

    Actually, when outputting from the headphone jack to the Microphone level input of your camera, you need to adjust the impedance. A Cable like the Whirlwind H4n cable does that and lat's you also keep a headphone out in case your camera doesn't have the option to listen to the recorded audio.

    I think most people don't realize they should speak closely (an inch or two) to the built in mic and also a windscreen can be a lifesaver. The mic itself is quite good if you place it close to you and use a few simple presets in adobe.

    It's a great machine.
    Perhaps one thing you should touch on is the stamina mode switch under the battery plate.
    When it is in stamina mode it cancels out some of the other
    Actions that you can do in the other mode such as bitrate files on mp3s and more.

    The XLR jack is also a 1/4" TRS combo jack. To connect an additional 3.5mm jack, would it be better to use an XLR to 3.5mm, or a 1/4" to 3.5mm TRS?

    Great video, it helped me a lot. Sound is definitely a thing that I have to improve. Can you tell me what is your sound setup. What mic do you use and what amplifier. I use Saramonic amp plus Edutige mic but I am not very pleased with the results, plus I have to think about the cable of the mic all the time and the Saramonic is draining the batteries like crazy.

    the best thing is usb record to Ipad. jacks just give you analogue. but USB is digital. so if your set up is jack output, the signal is analogue converted to digital in the zoom then back to analogue jack for the ipad then coverted again to digital, were as if you set up your zoom to USB out it goes direct to ipad. I think it ......what do you think?

    Hi Jonathan. Nice tutorial sir. I am attempting to rescue a 1972 cassette recording of a live comedy performance on my Zoom H4n. I have a clean cassette player and I'm wondering should I feed the outgoing signal through a mixer then, come from the record-OUT of the mixer into the Zoom xlr mic inputs OR can I record into the Speaker/line input on the side of the zoom? Thank you in advance!the speaker !

    Hi, nice tips. Love the battery one.
    Questions:
    1. can you connect it to a DJ mix table to record mi music like a sound card? If yes
    2. can you at the same time record the ambiance with the build-in mic?
    3. what would be an SD card size to record at least 10h of music nonstop?
    Thank you in advance for your answer.

    • @davide2.07

      yes, yes, and 32Gb is the max sd card the H4n pro can handle. I might recommend recording to a computer instead of an SD card instead to go around the 10hr limitation. The H4n pro, as well as many other audio interfaces, can be connected to the computer directly via usb, that way the H4n pro just processes the audio into your computer and your computer (whatever program of choice) will take care of the recording for you without the time limitation (I would test it too before your gig to be safe)

    I have zero tech knowledge so please bear with my question, but is your number 2 use saying that I can record a video on my iphone6 that uses the H4n as the mic for better sound? If so, do you then have to sync the audio to the video in some type of software program later or will the video and the better audio already be together? I don't have an SD card in my phone though. Without that I suppose the better sound just goes straight onto the video in the camera? I wonder if you wouldn't mind making a video showing how we could use the H4n as a basic mic for our phones. I'll understand if that's too much trouble though. Thanks for any advise you can give.

    Thanks for the video. Does the VXLR to 3.5mm adapter only work with Rode mics? Would the standard TRS cable work with this? I believe I only need a TRRS adapter if I'm using with a smartphone? I want to buy lav mics to work with the H4N. Thanks to anyone who can advise.

    I don't use my Zoom H4n PRO much because of my type of video (TOY R/C Model Planes) where I need someone to figure a way for my Canon XA-30 or T5i to take my H4n PRO from pause to record and back to pause as I press the Record/Pause button on the camera. I have the Wired Remote for the H4n PRO but need the H4n PRO better synced with the Record/Pause of my camera as there many shots are very short 3 to 10 seconds and as many shots as 25 to 30 or more in a single flight. and can be of different aircraft. So you can see the synchronization of audio can be very time consuming if not at all impossible. Any help out there PLZ.

  • @Energizer34

    Why a Rode smartLav+ Lavalier Microphone for iPhone and Smartphones? Does the H4n Pro specifically have a 4 connector jack on the back? Does this mean that a mono or stereo mic would not work? That mic is quite expensive and I would like to open up my options with a better understanding of what options are available to connect to the inputs. Also I'm interested in connecting 2 lav mics to the XLR jacks with the 3.5mm adapters you showed here and so my question applies to these jacks and connectors as well. Thanks.

    So, I'm having trouble with ALL my memory cards. I see an advertisement with one supplier of accessories the SONY 32G Class 10 (1) card. This would be nice but based on the list of cards on the Zoom H4N Pro PDF this is not one of the cards they show. All their cards seen to be old and many are not even for sale on Amazon. None of those either are sent via Prime. Just curious if you'd be kind enuf to furnish a card or two you use? Thanx!I also can't see the type power cable USB type you use on Amazon. Brand and Model please? The only ones I find are shown as being for two way radios. I'm not a film person but would like to know ideas for which of the items you mention other than the microphones could be used in recording/ looping practice with an acoustic if you know please? Thanks - CJ

    Thanks TechWiz, great video. I accidentally dropped something onto my H4N Pro whilst it was in the case and it still managed to break the led screen. The recorder still works but has an ink bleed, do you know anywhere in Aus that fixes screens?

    great video! is there any test that measured the USB powered time. what ever test . it's just that I don't know how long for example you can power a xlr mic with phantom power from a let's say 10000mA power bank. or any other test like this.

    Hi, can I ask if I can connect a XLR cable to mic and connect a 6.5mm jack to my electric guitar directly in order to record both my vocal and guitar at the same time and get two clearer sounds?
    or do I have to connect another mic in order to record the guitar?
    Thanks!

    Sooo....you can connect a lav with a TRRS 3.5 mm connector into the Zoom, and it'll record no problem?

    • @elsongs
      @elsongs 4 роки тому

      It depends. If the lav has its own battery power, use that and it will work perfectly fine on the H4n Pro (it will record dual mono in Stereo recording mode). If it does not have battery power, or you use the H4n's internal Plug In Power function, it will not work.

    Hi, for not receiving line signal + 4dbu, is H4n a recorder with less quality than others that receive + 4dbu or does not this detail affect the final audio quality of the H4n? Thanks and congratulations for the video.

    Thanks, this is helpful! I need to plug in two external lavalier mikes for doing an interview. I want to set them both to record in stereo. How do I do that? Is there a way to set stereo for both inputs 1 and 2? I only want to use external mikes, not the mike that comes on the recorder. Also, can you recommend a mode to record in? I am feeling VERY overwhelmed by this new fancy recorder, though I know it's a must to have now that I am podcasting professionally.

    Thank you for your tips. I will be buying this one to record solo piano music. Is it possible to use my own mics, which might be better than the ones from the recorder? How do I connect my own omnidirectional mics?

    • @fun_ghoul
      @fun_ghoul 5 років тому

      Just plug them into the bottom. The H4N even has 24V and 48V phantom power for the XLR ports, if you need it.
      You could also use the 3.5mm on the back, but you'd have to have a weird cable (e.g. 2x 3.5mm female mono to 1x 3.5mm male stereo) to make it work.

    you didn't add the power bank or the right cable for the usb that fits the h4n. ive been trying to find an alternative to using batteries cause mine must be broke cause if i put new batteries in it, it doesnt last for maybe 2-3 hours when it should last alot longer so if you could show me the exact thing for the usb cable and power bank that would be awesome!

    i just got the h4n pro! Your hacks are genious. Do you ever use the wired lavs tho? the shotgun mic on the device works fine but my lav's for channel one and two do not work and wondered if you had the same issue and thats why you were using the singular external mic input instead of the xlr outputs.

    Hi, thanks for this video! I have a question about tip nr 5. I have a 20000 mAh powerbank, the output is 5V, 3.4 A (total), it has 2 outputs. I just bought the 5V 1A USB cable that you suggested, but I am asking myself if I could use my powerbank, that has an output higher than requested for the H4n pro (3,4 A vs 1A), or it is better to don't use it to power the recorder to avoid damages?
    Will the USB cable you suggested "convert" the output amperage of my powerbank from 3,4 A to 1A? Thanks and sorry for length!

    • @fun_ghoul
      @fun_ghoul 5 років тому +1

      Voltage needs to match, but amperage does not. With current (amps), you need to ensure you have at LEAST as much current as your device demands, rather than viewing the device's rated current as an upper limit. The device _draws_ as much current as it needs (or less, if less is available), but never more. The 1A-rated cable could theoretically be insufficient for the power bank if you were powering a device that draws 3.4A...but you're not. The H4N comes with a 5V 1A adapter (Zoom AD-17), so it draws no more than that. Hope that helps.

    Hi, I have a couple of questions, first I'd like to give you somewhat of a backstory. I don't have any experience with sound recording but I'm looking for the best handheld recorder to use for filmmaking (animation) purposes, I'd like to record sound effects, ambience sound, nature recordings and voice recording. I've done research and quickly found the Zoom H2n, then found the Zoom H4n, and now the Zoom H4n pro. These are the recorders I can afford. Now I understand the main difference between the H2n and H4n are options and the H4n pro is a greatly improved version. I would like the option to be able to mount it to my DSLR so I think that means scrapping the Zoom H2n, right? The H4n and pro version have XLR inputs so you can use an external mic with it. My questions about these are: Basically how this works. What is the role of the Zoom h4n pro in this, why would you use an external mic with it? What is the purpose of using an external mic, on a Zoom h4n pro, on a DSLR? I've watched many reviews, and the H4n pro seems like the best option out of these with more options for the future.. but I would basically like a bit more information and confirmation as to how this all works, from someone with experience before I make the purchase.

    • @TechWizTime
      @TechWizTime  7 років тому +2

      Okay. The H4nPro is the better choice for several reasons. The internal components are upgraded to be better in a recording sense. The GAINS (or how loud the sound can be manipulated before getting noisy feedback) are of the same quality as the models up from the H4n. Better Gains = Better sound quality.
      The reason for using an external XLR Microphone is better quality sound once again. The microphones on top of the H4N Pro are great quality, however, if you are looking for a low noise floor (or the amount of noise being captured when nothing is happening) and a greater range of sound (basically bass, treble, warmth etc) then an external microphone is going to bring your great sound recordings up to awesome!
      To be honest, if you are just recording sounds for animation, then the H4N Pro is all you would need to start. Adding a Boom Mic with a Blimp enclosure to reduce noise is something that can be purchased down the track. You don't need it now. Just make content as making the content means you improve and get better with time! Good Luck :)

    • @Drb3r
      @Drb3r 7 років тому +2

      Thank you very much for your answer! I figured the H4n pro would be better down the line because it has at least the option of using another mic with it down the line should I want to but it's always good to have a bit more information from someone who has the information & experience! Now I am definitely convinced. :)
