I love these things! I ran 10 in my Merc group but modded them by replacing the medium laser with a flamer. Swarm a mech, over heat it, salvage it afterwards. My friends hated this. I called my mod the Zippo after the disposal lighter.
The naming of the Savannah Master is a fun example of BT lore. When I first learned about them, I made an assumption that I imagine most people did - "savannah" was a different spelling of savanna, referring to the kind of open grassy plains where a small, fast combat hovercraft could excel. Then I read the TRO entry and learned the name came from a very irate mechwarrior named Savannah, who was thoroughly chumped by these things in a test exercise.
I have 20... But use 18 of the little buggers in 1 umit that is named Abaddon's Swarm. They are members of the Word of Blake's 52nd Shadow Division (Apollyon's Chosen). They mostly support the Opacus Venatori. Command Level II the Medium Lasers been upgrafed to Inner Sphere Extended Range models. The 2nd Level II swapped out the mediums for 2 Inner Sphere ER Small Lasers and the 3rd Level II changed over to Small Pulse lasers. Each Level II waits till the fighting then streaks in at high speed on the sides of the map, then angles in at speed going after slow moving Heavy and Assault Mechs rear. They eat up mechs like the Cyclops, Awesome, Atlas, Crusader, Archer, Longbow. Their banes... Thunderbolt, and Battlemaster.
The Savannah Master always felt to me like those one man air boats you see used in Florida but upgraded to a full hover skirts and given military armament. Two placement tips: Cruise Speed 13 is enough for you to achieve +4 TMM in a single 5 hex forward dash, turn around then 5 hexes back. This allows you to slash and attack your opponent immediately the next turn if they are still in your front arc. Also remember that you can stack 2 of your vehicles in a single hex, so you can focus a bit more pain with them. P.S The old cheese tactic of these was to surround all 6 hexes of a non-jump 'Mech and then charge the appropriate right/leg hex to target that 'Mech's leg to bring it down. I am so glad this has since been fixed by errata by nerfing the damage calculation!
My dirty trick for the Savannah Master is to attach a squad of Fa Shih battle armor to them. They can ride in using their magnetic clamps and then jump off to attack slow assaults and heavies. Also, the Gabriel hover tank does the same job as the SM, just better.
