A Santa Anita Derby winner is always dangerous, and this one does look solid. Compared to most of the other top point getters, he's well enough bred for sure, with stamina mostly through the sire and speed mostly through the dam, and I like that he's bred to improve over time. That said, the Kentucky Derby historically isn't a race handicapped by class, because it's a "class determiner" race most of the time. Stronghold is just as solid a top pick for the "new class" as anyone from the other areas of the country.
You are judging SH against the average KD field, note his increasing bris figures with each and every race, and go watch his April 20th w/o at SA and tell me your opinion after seeing that FULL display incl the mile long gallop out which answered some big questions for me on whether the direction he has going coming into this race is scary. He possesses a wonderful style for a race like the KD, imo, and while I am not picking anyone to win this race based upon all the ? marks that the so-called “top contenders” have as they train for this race, I think SH has everything you want to see in field like this to run 3rd, at worst. And last time I checked a 10-15 shot will pay well to show in a 20 horse field. Not picking him to win but he has virtually checked all the boxes I need to see to pick him to finish ITM.
