  • Professor Tim Noakes was born in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1949. As a youngster, he had a keen interest in sport and attended Diocesan College in Cape Town. Following this, he studied at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and obtained an MBChB degree in 1974, an MD in 1981 and a DSc (Med) in Exercise Science in 2002.
Prof. Noakes has published more than 750 scientific books and articles. He has been cited more than 19 000 times in scientific literature, has an H-index of 71 and has been rated an A1 scientist by the National Research Foundation of South Africa for a second 5-year term. He has won numerous awards over the years and made himself available on many editorial boards.
In 2012, Tim founded 'The Noakes Foundation', a Non-Profit Corporation founded for public benefit which aims to advance medical science’s understanding of the benefits of a low-carb high-fat (LCHF) diet by providing evidence-based information on optimum nutrition that is free from commercial agenda. The foundation has also started the Eat Better South Africans campaign, which allows South Africans in even the poorest communities to adopt a high-fat, low-carb, extremely healthy diet for just three dollars per day.
More recently, the foundation has developed 'The Nutrition Network', which is a certification and training program for doctors who want to prescribe a high-fat, low-carb diet to their patients. The platform has been designed exclusively for medical practitioners across all disciplines, covering the latest and most up-to-date science and research in the field of Low Carb Nutrition (nutrition-network.org/)
Prof. Noakes has a passion for running and is still active, running half marathons when he can. He is a devoted husband, father and grandfather and now, in his retirement, is enjoying spending more time with his family.

@@Reactaddictpeople get fooled by Berg’s professional appearance and blindly trust him. Just because he calls himself a doctor (which he is not) and uses a white board like a teacher does, doesn’t mean he’s credible. It’s apparent the guy is just trying to sell his supplements, which is ironic since in the past he has advised against taking supplements. He also has strong ties to Scientology having donated half a million dollars to get promoted.

As a former nurse who was forced by mainstream medicine to recommend 150 gm of carbs to my diabetics, I cannot tell you how thrilled I am that you are giving these talks! I was one of the EARLY users of Atkins diet--the results were spectacular. But I kept getting drawn back in by wrong advice from the medical mainstream AND kept getting fatter when I did. As this LCHF movement has grown, has published the REAL science, I am back on board, and here for life! I enjoy low insulin levels, very good glucose levels and excellent health. Your work is phenomenal! Keep it up--can't wait for the next video!

As a current nurse and midwife I can tell you they are still spouting the same info. In a hospital local to me recently where I was working there were some information signs hung regarding diabetes....fact it said....just because you have diabetes doesn't mean you have to avoid sugar....I really wanted to get my black marker out and make a note of 'no....you don't have too...but you should!'

Last year I did some volunteer work for meals on wheels.
As you can imagine, there was no shortage of diabetics on my list.
Everyone was given a three course meal, main, soup and dessert.
What was the diabetics choice for sweets/dessert?
Yep, fruit based with jelly and similar, just sugar basically.
Of course this isn't the chefs fault, he/she has to follow the guidelines set in Australia.
It was infuriating to walk into peoples homes with advanced type 2 diabetics with arthritis, red raw eyelids and obesity with that shit.😢

Wrong approach. Diabetes is caused by an insulin signaling problem and promoted by blood fats ie refined carbs and fats. High blood glucose is a symptom as Dr Joseph Kraft showed in his insulin essays. The results of low carb are spectacular but unfortunately it comes at a cost of atherosclerosis progression and degenerative diseases. Even the world head of diabetes Dr Kelly M West warned against such diets due to early kidney failure. ua-cam.com/video/CT8K6NcAigo/v-deo.html

@@TB1M1 TB1M1 There is little evidence of that. The idea that low carb is bad for us is inconsistent with our evolution, and the research suggests overeating, and the combo of fat, particularly seed oils and high amounts of carbs. The diabetes associations cannot be trusted as they have repeatedly shown, too invested in the status quo by academic orthodoxy and industry backing.

I saw your video "Challenging Conventional Dietary Guidelines". I am 72 years, a 33-year old diabetic and have been on insulin for 17 years and Invokana for about 3 years. I am from the Philippines, 5'10" tall weighed 195 lbs. Incidentally, I have retinopathy, CKD Stage 2, fatty liver, vascular disease, etc.
After I watched this video I was ecstatic and started to study the Low Carb diet and intermittent fasting. Did most of my research on You Tube.
I decided to follow what I learned. I started on LCHF diet on January 24, 2020. I did 16-hr intermittent fasting three days a week. I tested my blood sugar level using a glucometer five (5) times a day.
The first thing I noticed was no hunger pangs. No cravings. No more Hypoglycemia which Has been scary to me because of several severe episodes. After five days my blood glucose was in the 5 mmol/L level. I then decided to reduce my dose of insulin and finally stopped injecting after seven (7) days. On my 14th day I stopped Invokana. My blood sugar has remained normal until now. I have lost a total of 25 lbs since. Thank you very much.
Many friends have been asking me over the past fifteen (15) years how I have managed my diabetes. I give pointers every now and then but mostly referred them to videos and articles I have researched on including what my doctors have taught me. However, most of them are not conversant in English. That is why with this revolutionary cure for diabetes and weight loss I decided to start a vlog in our native language, Tagalog.
It is in this regard that I am requesting for your permission to use some of your content in the above-mentioned video in my own vlogs.
    Thank you once again.
I look forward to your favorable response to this humble request.

Thank you for your erudite critique of the literature. It is fascinating in retrospect to see how pressures from the prevailing norm (often supported by big corporate/pharma interests) can disrupt progress in health sciences. And it's still happening! I had sixteen years of defending the use of nutritional therapy in a UK univesity. Reaven's work was key in my early approach to cardiometabolic syndrome treatment. Luckily I was also taking guidance from the early evolutionary nutrition research, contextualized with common sense - if we have always eaten saturated fat then the problem lies elsewhere. An absolutely excellent presentation. Many thanks To Tim Noakes. I do wish there was a presentation available which looked at the sterling work of John Yudkin over here in the UK...who had his career and reputation totally destroyed by Ancel Keys et al when he wrote that sugar, the white stuff, was quite literally killing us. It's very sad that this man was discredited, reviled and then discarded. He deserves very much to have a prominent place as one of the forerunners of discovering and trying to warn us of the absolute disastrous effects of sugar (carbohydrate) on our health."
It was good to hear you mention his name here albeit very briefly. Ancel.Keys put paid to Yudkin too.... Keys has much to answer for in the state of world health today.

True and a majority of text books I used during my Masters degree studies stated that we actually do NOT need CHO - if we do ( glucose needed for red blood cells , brain etc ) the liver can produce the glucose we need through GNG and to the level required no more, no less ...a fact that is totally ignored by modern nutritional advice and advocates... but is a biochemical fact also as an 8 year carnivore I can attest I have perfect health eating no CHO, I have very low triglycerides and high HDL and a C-Reactive Protein of 0.1...both my pre-and post prandial glucose levels are very low and sit well within non-diabetic norms - my diet is 80% saturated / mono -saturated natural fats and 15-20 % animal / fish derived protein.

Great information professor! I am insulin resistant, but 8 months carnivore and under 5% carb. I'm feeling better and better, however my blood work is still resistant to the diet change. I look forward to new blood panels in 3 months and seeing some great changes.

Make sure you eat enough fat and not too much protein as protein turns into sugar. You need to do carnivore which is keto style : 70-80% fat and 30-20% protein.

    Very well said Tim.
    Such common sense.
A healthy body regulates blood glucose very tightly. Why? Because high blood glucose is dangerous.
How does it regulate it? By turning glucose into triglycerides.....
Pretty simple to understand then that to keep blood triglycerides low you need to eat a low carbohydrate diet.

    Excellent lecture, Professor Noakes!
You are, as ever, very generous in your understanding of intellectual and/or moral failings in your fellow academics. However, given the inexorable logic of your argument, would it be entirely unreasonable to consider an alternative explanation to his inexplicably dropping the Low Carb' ball.
Indeed, it seems equally plausible that he did actually follow the research to its logical conclusion, only to bury the results for the very reasons you site for his sudden and inexplicable loss of enthusiasm for a subject so clearly close to his heart.

It's winter: vegans are hibernating indoors eating their stored tree bark, acorns, oats, and hay. They have no time and no energy to come on here and post comments. Check back in spring, though. There will be a new batch of vegans, too, to compensate for those vegans who died of detoxing last winter.
