What is scary, is that this is almost 50 years ago. And yet if we were to listen to exactly the same music we would not be saying we were listening to "old" style jazz. Yet if people back then were listening to jazz from 50 years before, they would say it was old.

@@silva777 I love Chick's Rhodes playing. It isn't really a piano, it's more like a celeste except better. Celestes sound clunky and never caught on. If it weren't for the Nutcracker they would have died out.
The Rhodes has been back in production since 2007.

Well in 1950 the innovations of Charlie Parker were still new. But in 1920 Jazz itself was still new! The real truth is that jazz evolved so fast that the musicians themselves couldn't keep up. However some basic tonal and rhythmic parameters of sophistication reach kinda the popular ambiguity limit so going any further taxes the regular lay audience. So what's interesting is all the different mariad ways these limits of ambiguity/sophistication are expressed in jazz. From Jarrett or Kenny Wheeler or David Holland to Phronesis or Chris Dave etc etc etc

The quartet had Steve Swallow and Roy Haynes, but after some bad live performance Getz blamed it on Haynes saying his timing was off and kicked him out of the band. According to Swallow that was bullsh*t and anyone that knows Roy Haynes knows his time is impeccable. It was Getz who was having drug problems and messed up the performance. Swallow wouldn't stand for it and basically quit in defense of Roy. Chick was sort of stuck since the European tour was booked and it showcased his music and as I recall he was the arranger for the quartet. Swallow talks about this in an interview that's on YT.
But Stanley and Tony sound great! They all do. It's a super-group!

Mr. Corea's best. Since you like it (and since I like your name, reminding me of a number of pleasant visits and adventures with Mr. Stropharia C. in my youth), I will reward you with a link to one of my favorite versions. As a guitar player, you will understand how this was one of those recordings that changed my life. Like the video, also a fairly early recording of Chick's masterpiece composition.
