Interview with Yuko Asada | Women in Pan, Episode 8

  • In Episode 8 of the “Women in Pan” 10-part series, under the A Better Tomorrow banner, Attillah Springer interviews Yuko Asada about her life and journey in pan. Yuko is a musical instrument technician at Northern Illinois University (NIU) where she directs the NIU Community School of the Arts Steelband and assists the NIU Steelband. Yuko is a steelpan builder, tuner, educator, mentor, composer, arranger, transcriber and member of the new NIU Staff Professional Development Academy. She has presented at conferences, conducted workshops, co-founded the Pastiche Steel Ensemble, Virtual Steelband, and Pan in Unity. She has worked as clinician/adjudicator for steelpan festivals in the United States, Japan and Trinidad. Her work has also taken her to Australia and Thailand. She is the only active tuner trained under the late Dr. Clifford Alexis.

    It's very interesting to hear someone who is not a Trini speak about feeling like being in a trance from being on the drag during Panorama night, plus the general trance like state you feel while being out there among the people, especially if you're in or playing for a band. Me being a born and bred Trini, this is how I feel every single year during Panorama. It's never gets old or tired. The feeling in the air for me is always electric and infectious. I live for this every year.

    Are the pans made by hand?

      All steel pans are made by hand, they use oil drums and skilled craftsmen use tools to hammer and tune the instrument.
