Historically, surgeries were in fact performed as if they were stage performances. You had no privacy as a patient whatsoever. so glad I missed most of the Tom Scott Plus videos when they were originally released. I have quite the catalogue of videos to go through before it feels like Tom isn't on UA-cam as much
One strategy I used to remove some parts is that some parts have "holes" (the bucket, heart, and bread are examples) - the tweezers are spring loaded - rather than clamp the outside of the piece, you put the tweezers inside the gap and the release so the spring pushes the tweezers out and holds onto the piece from the inside.
As someone whith a basic background in electrotech it always scares me when UA-camrs do those stupid taser challengers and shock challenges without a doctor on hand, they're really taking a huge risk with their lives, even small amounts of electricity can kill a person if things go wrong. Major props to Tom for opening the video with a disclaimer about how they are mitigating the risk to be as safe os possible! Sidenote: If you want to really terrify me, just show me people destroying old CRT screens! The capacitors in those things are incredibly dangerous if messed with, and they hold a charge for a LONG time after being disconnected.
Fortunately, TENS machines are very safe and current limited. Even putting the pads over your heart isn't that bad (but do not do this, it's not worth risking it in case you have an unknown disorder that might raise your risk dramatically)
@@Tadfafty It depends entirely on the machine and the capacitors used. Modern tech is all low-voltage so capacitors on most things these days don't pose the same kind of hazard. CRT screens used full line strength and their capacitors stay charged for up to 6 months after being disconnected.
@@Whitewingdevil pluse most modern devices if designed with some reason have discharge resistors across capacitors, at least for capacitors that may get touched, like those in power supplies where you theoretically could touch them through the prongs on the plug.

Historically, surgeries were in fact performed as if they were stage performances. You had no privacy as a patient whatsoever. In theory, this was in order to allow medical students to watch and learn from the operations being performed, but most hospitals eventually ended up selling tickets to the general public....
@@adiuntesserande6893 it might happen again as an initiative to lower hospital bills in the US.
every single one of your videos is a banger. consistency, quality, and an amazing personality make you one of youtube's best creators, period. your enthusiasm for whatever cool thing it is you're exploring with us is infectious every time. there's an authenticity about you that's hard to find elsewhere.
That's some inTENS gameplay right there
Honestly Rohin is my absolute favorite guest presenter thusfar, and his channel and this episode show exactly why.
Don’t think I’ve enjoyed watching adults play with kids toys and suffering this much before
thank you for the music cues and other non-dialogue captions Tom
(belly laughs)
🤣
I said it before and I'll say it again, the subtitle maker is a master of their craft. Thank you for the entertainment, Tom! Your suffering has brought us much joy (and hats off for your self restraint, I would have let curses fly!)
I’ve not yet even finished watching, but I’m delighted to see you two collaborate again, and Tom’s bemused look of trepidation as Dr. Francis explains that you’ll be getting zapped reminds me of how I feel anytime I leave the house to do anything whatsoever.
This is the most tense game of Operation I've ever witnessed.
I can't decide if that's an intentional pun.
@@hughcaldwell1034 It's not.
I love Rohin's dry humor.
its funny how the video where tom is screaming in visceral pain (and suspense) is the video where i realize how soothing dr rohin's voice is
so glad I missed most of the Tom Scott Plus videos when they were originally released. I have quite the catalogue of videos to go through before it feels like Tom isn't on UA-cam as much
I want to see this with the whole techdif crew
I can just see Gary blowing his top over this. I want it.
0:31 the mental image of dr. francis frantically performing CPR on himself is morbidly hilarious to me
One strategy I used to remove some parts is that some parts have "holes" (the bucket, heart, and bread are examples) - the tweezers are spring loaded - rather than clamp the outside of the piece, you put the tweezers inside the gap and the release so the spring pushes the tweezers out and holds onto the piece from the inside.
Big fan of whoever writes the subtitles! Tom's screams are just perfect.
The sight of the cardiologist resuscitating himself after getting a cardiac arrest is living in my head rent-free after that intro
Whenever I work on something electronic, I unplug it and turn it on before doing anything (which will discharge the capacitors)
I've always been very quick on how fast I "thumbs up" these videos, because it doesn't matter what it is, it's always a fantastic video, and I want you to know that I absolutely love these videos. This one is no different, truly fantastic content, from a producer I love, with a guest I also love, that is so far out your current content on the main channel, and I want it to continue.
Well done Tom
That “you’re paying for surgery” bit was brilliant.
If the surgeon DOESN'T win, we have larger things to worry about.
The thing is, I don't think he's a surgeon. Cardiologists just treat/diagnose people with heart problems, they're not the same as a cardiac surgeon.
@@danieljensen2626
Don’t all medical doctors learn to do at least some surgery, though?
I don't know but I thought surgeons are specialists
He's not Mr Francis - he's not a surgeon
He's a UK cardiologist, which is a medic not a surgeon. They do procedures such as revascularisation following myocardial infarction (opening up heart blood vessels after heart attack) or putting in pacemakers.
Equivalent surgeon is a cardiothoracic surgeon - they do heart transplants to mend broken hearts. Rohin is a heart breaker, not a heart mender.
A fitting end to the game, Tom Scott loses, gets shocked and rage quits by unintentionally flipping the board.
I can't help but feel that every time Tom says, "It didn't work", it actually did work, but Tom is just a super masochist.
Wonderful. Need a full guest tournament of this.
Does it make me a sadist to enjoy Tom's screams? And his insane ability to avoid expletives even when in intense pain
I also have to give mad props for the accessibility of the captions, as well as the size change to comedically emphasize Tom’s pain.
I wouldn't be here without great surgeons, thanks for doing what you do
This is the best video I've seen all year(yes, ik it's just beginning).
Two of my favourite creators playing one of my favourite games! (PS, not even a cardiologist can resuscitate themselves lmao)
*EDIT:* in surgical courses, I've used similar "toys" to practise laparoscopy and arthroscopy, albeit without the electric shocks!
Clearly you haven't met Rohin - if anybody can defy biology for a joke, it's gotta be him
@@jamescole4317 too true. To Rohin, VF doesn't stand for "ventricular fibrillation", it stands for "very funny"
the subtitles for the screams and the music are delightful
“That was deeply unpleasant” is going to be my new motto for life.
At least the TENS will prevent you from feeling pain, so there's that at least... 😆 🤣 😂
I'm seeing a new side to Tom: "Turn up the level of the electric shocks!"
Tom you’re the freaking best. This new channel and the content is so very much enjoyable to watch.
This could have been a Michael Reeves video, but in that case it would've been infinitely more chaotic and contained a large amount of tazers
I really shouldn't be sitting here cackling at two adults playing a child's game and shocking the hell out of each other
Why not?
Why am I reminded of the psychology experiment with people delivering what they thought were electric shocks to actors? The one where they were easily encouraged to deliver stronger shocks despite the screams...
Milgram's study in obedience!
Absolutely love this new channel's content
