You can actually use the MPC Live in controller mode to control the MPC VST inside Ableton and still use transport controls. I think that that is actually the most useful way to do it with the biggest flexibility and without any sync or timing problems. Install the Akai internal Midi drivers and in Abletons MIDI settings choose Advance from the dropdown list and then MPC Live public in the other two windows. Last thing you gotta make sure that inside the MPC VST plugin in the Hardware settings make sure to choose the Record Overdub sends commands to MPC Plugin and NOT to Host DAW. I know, it sounds confusing but it works that way. Cheers
can you do a video of this set up cause i'm an illiterate
@@carlosdubose6194 uhm sorry, no time for that really. But anyway; i think this does not work anymore with the newest firmware. But I could be wrong, I changed my workflow and completely went away from the computer. I try to jam and get ideas going in standalone mode only and with all my hardware synths and drum machines and then export an ALS file and finish mixing and effects in ableton afterwards. Cheers
@@MrJemabaris still works, so big thanks to you. Changing the setting to send the rec/overdub buttons to vst made my week. I also want to use the computer less, but now I have projects I'm working on with a few MPC plugins which only work on the computer since Akai doesn't allow you to export them to MPCLive for standalone mode
@@sharkpump7755 how to you change the rec/over dub buttons to affect the host daw?
@janis @tubedigga you just made my day . I’ve been trying to do this for years . Game changer for me . Thanks so much
Could you make an updated version of this since the MPC is now midi multi and the menus are now different
Finally I bought MPC software only to try da vst plugin with my Push 2 and Ableton Live.Again Thank you for the video.
game changer! that sync delay was doing my head in. thanks
Hi, Noob here!
MPC X SE, MPK249, Toshiba Satellite with WIN 10, Abelton Live 12 Lite. Not seeing how/where to install MPC Plug-in in Live 12. MPCX Menu does not have a Live 12 icon. MPK is connected to MPCX via USB and Midi in and out cables but I think the USB is active.
Keyboard and MPCX communicate fine. Toshiba and MPCX same. Live 12 sees keyboard as MPK249. Keyboard output is set to the MPCX. Abelton shows Toshiba speakers as only output.
HELP PLEASE!
Thanks!
Just started working with abelton and I have a question that I haven’t found answered online... how is your audio connected, to get the sound from ableton and the MPC live in this video.
Thanks this is really helpful. It seems like they have made some nice advances to the Ableton link that basically turn the MPC into an Ableton push but this method seems better for creation and that seems better for tweaking and live performances or somthing. I just ordered the USB to Midi cable so I can't wait to try this out.
Bro you dig tubes harder than any diggers I know. Keep it up!
Thanks, big up!
7:44 you can use an usb to ethernet cable for that :)
Muchas gracias !! Very good !!
Nice explanation. I think you nailed it.
Does anyone know how I can resize the MPC window in Ableton. Its opening too big and I cant get down to the lower right corner by moving it.
good morning tube digger.i use PROTOOLS,not ableton live. I tried the connections the same as you instructed in my iMac yet my mpcx isn’t communicating with mpc 2.8. I turn on midi beat clock in PROTOOLS prefs, and mpcx, also I have the same midi usb to 5 pin midi cable as you, please would you offer details on how to achieve this? THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.
Verry clear video! I have 2 questions :
_ In controler mode, its still the MPC Live that does all the audio processing ? (not the computer/daw) (processing : sample playback, fx, filter...)
_ In term of daw integration, Is there things you can only do via USB , and not via classic Midi din ? (I know no audio transfert)
id like to use the MPC Live as a slave from the DAW, all the midi sequences would be done on Cubase but the edition of the MPC with the VST software.
thank you!
Hello! Thank you for this tutorial. It works great! But, I don't know why It won't start playing audio. I mean, I upload samples, vst works great, but when I click play, nothing happens. Play button doesn't work in Mpc Live hardware, and even in ableton. What could be the problem? Thank you
Nice one, Digga!! Must dig out my iConnect!! Certainly makes it MUCH more flexible!!!
Can you do the same type of video for do studio 20 if it’s possible
Oso Sosa Sorry, I don’t own that software
I've followed your video instructions to the T. Stll it doesn't perform as displayed. Is there any other settings in the live that should be done?
Derek Caughman What’s the issue exactly?
I’ve tried this on go and it doesn’t work for some reason
How did you get your mpc to show up in your plugin folder
Has to be 64bit
Rescan your VSTs in Ableton.
Does this work for Drum Programs in the MPC plugin? Would you have to change the midi layout?
Great tutorials! Thank you. I installed software and connected PC to MPC but the MPC software is not showing the samples in the hardware. How can I get them to talk to each other please?
I have MPC One. This looks like best connection to ableton. Been following this but when I press a pad on the mpc the loaded vst software plays continuously. No note off after i stop pressing pad. Not sure why. Using a digital life usb connection. Maybe it’s busted. Will send back and go for iconnect midi adapter as on here . Any ideas what cause solution may be?
I only have the MPC software installed on my Mac in the usual way. How do I get it so I can use it in Ableton as a VST like Tubedigga does here?
Can I control the ableton drum racks using this technique?
I make my beats in MPC software and mix them in MPC before bouncing over to ProTools to master. I've noticed the stereo field of my songs in MPC don't sound right. I have a mental space of where I often pan certain instruments and I know my system and studio pretty well as far as sound translation. I want to find out why everything sounds mono routed through MPC interface while composing and not once I import into ProTools? Any suggestions?? Using Scarlett 18i8 interface, however, I switch to MPC interface while composing per AKAI's recommendations when in controller mode.
Thanks so much for the help! I've got my MPC One working in Ableton using midi now! One question though, is it possible to send midi notes out of the MPC while using a "Drum" track? The MPC only seems to send midi notes out when using a "Midi" track. Thanks again!
1Life You can’t specifically send midi from a track that’s hosting drum program, jus midi tracks. A possible workaround would be to use the new feature in 2.8 where you can trigger one track with another. Check my 2.8 update video and give it a go. Hopefully the destination track (a midi track) will mirror the behaviour of the drum track.
@@TUBEDIGGA Thanks for the pointers! I was able to forward the midi from the drum track to the midi track (after watching your video, thanks!), and I was able to input midi using the MPC pads into my DAW. Unfortunately this created a midi loop when trying to record a second midi track in my DAW, or when trying to overdub midi notes. Can't say I didn't try :D I'll just stick to using a midi keyboard for inputing midi in to my DAW as this works perfectly. The only downside is that I can't use the MPC pads for input. I'm only using midi because I love using Session View in Ableton. Thanks again for the help! If you have any more ideas of what might work, please send them my way!
hey tubedigga this older video actually really helped me! which file is the actual MPC vst (example: mpc.vst or mpc.dll?). reason I ask is I'm running a high performance VM with a daw and have raid backups on a shared drive. kind of went nuts with install paths just for testing purposes. I will uninstall everything and reinstall again in a more logical path. but until then just testing and working things out and having a hard time finding which file is actually the MPC plug-in.
I watched this video a thousand times to check and double-check ... all this does not work for me. Could it be that after the new update this is not possible anymore? I have no idea what I am doing wrong :-( Where could be my mistakes? I just want to externally control Ableton with my MPC live ...
Tube Digga, do you do ableton tutorials?
You can send MMC from the MPC Live in Controller Mode for your transport buttons to work in that mode.
I was wondering, in controller mode, do all the buttons on the MPC send MIDI. If so, it shouldn't be too hard to make a max device that will relay that data to Ableton and assign it to the Ableton's transport. Max can host VST as well so you could have Max load the MPC-plugin which can intercept the MIDI and send it to live. That way you'd only need one device. Just a thought.
Can you control more then one MPC live instrument at once from Ableton miditracks?
how does one go about setting up a lesson?

I'm still trying to get this to work. I can open the MPC vst in live, but no connections after that. I love the MPC series and am most familiar with them. I did get the MPC live last year. I have more fun making beats on it than looking solely at a large computer screen. I was stoked on this as way to use both abelton live and the mpc live together in a way. I can't get them to communicate though. And even if I did it's only midi, is there a way to bring up record songs via the mpc live and interact with it on abelton live in a way similar to whats shown using only midi? I also have an old MPD 32 and it syncs up with ablelton okay, but I can't use the record, start and stop buttons on it. I'm taking a class on abelton live now and dig it, but again, looking at that screen for too long isn't for me. Although abelton can do amazing things. At this point I'll keep my MPC side separate and just record into abelton for automation and tweaks. I'll keep trying to get the mix (iconnect) to merge them both. Anything helps, thanks!!!
Excellent tuturial.. Thanks
Can you connect your MPC to an interface (in my case a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4) using midi cables so you can use the MPC in the same way connected to Ableton??
Daniel Suda If the Scarlett has a standard midi input and then connects to your computer via USB then sure, in theory it should. I don’t own a Scarlett so I can’t say for certain.
@@TUBEDIGGA it has 1 midi in and 1 midi out, i tried it and its not showing any signal in ableton so idk
I really appreciate this video I just have a question. What if most of the sounds I use are in an internal HD in my Live. Connecting it as a controller puts the sounds visible on my Mac. Now that I’m thinking about it, StandAlone should work similarly since the HD is in the MPC regardless. I’m only asking because my Mac picks up the HD only in controller mode (obviously) but is it better to stay in standalone alone and just use my MPC Live as another “computer” essentially. If that makes sense... sorry everyone
I want an answer to thisssss
Where do you get the MPC Plugin? Can't find a download/store page anywhere.
You have to create an account and then register your MPC on Akai Pros website if you haven't already done so. Once that is done, go to MY REGISTERED PRODUCTS and select your MPC. There you will find all your downloads including the main version of MPC Software. When you install it you will be given the option to install the VST, Audio Unit or AAX versions of the plugin. All this basic info and much more is included in my MPC Masterclass Video course which you can find here, and if you decide it's for you, I can offer you 20% off by using this code at checkout - MPCMASTERCLASS20. www.tubedigga.com/mpcmasterclass
Hello Tube Digga, I've got a question.
Instead of having some kind of USB to Midi interface, would it work if I connect the midi in into my sound card? I tried it but somehow it doesn't work, maybe I'm not doing it right, thanks!!!
Hans Pereira If your sound card has a Midi in port then yes, mpc midi out to sound card midi in. And if the sound card itself is then connected via usb anyway, then it’s essentially the same thing. Basically as long as your computer or whatever device is attached to it has a dedicated midi in port it should work.
Tested this, this does work. Most people with need to go into their DAW (if its not class compliant) and select the audio interface as a MIDI device. I had to do this in ableton to be able to send midi out from my audio interface into the MPC.
Is there a way to sync midi clock from Ableton live without the software? I used to be able to do it with my mpc 2500 and use Ableton as the master midi clock
Yes, just do the reverse of what’s shown in this video. Usb midi interface out from your computer to MPC midi in.
Thank you means a lot
Tube Digga,
followed instructions, ableton reads Mio midi interface in preferences but does not respond. Inside the MPC plugin, MPC won't trigger any commands. The plugin works when I click pads with the mouse but controller does nothing. Any ideas?
Thanks a bunch.
Thanks for this video! Has this process changed with the latest releases of the firmware (2.8)? I'm thinking about purchasing a MPC One because I'm looking for a drum machine with a tight and easy integration into Abelton (recording MIDI or Audio directly into Ableton and using Ableton as the main DAW). I currently have the Maschine, which has a horrible plugin integration if you're trying to record MIDI into Ableton (doable, but a pain)
Tim 2.7 already has Ableton control and ALS export, 2.8 brings a huge midi update. Check out my video on 2.8 to see what is new
Thank you, will check it out!
None of these options popped up when I connected my mpc one using the midi instructions. It never auto assigned anything in my mpc. I wonder if there was was update and something changed.
This video is 4 years old. I have no idea what firmware MPC was at then, possibly 2.3 or 2.4 a MPC is now at 2.10 so if you don’t see the options you’ll need to update. However I’m not sure what options you’re specifically referring to.
Hello Tubedigga, I’ve eventually managed to get this all set up🙏 but it does not seem to allow my expansion packs within my mpc to play whilst in this mode 🤷🏻♂️ any ideas what i am doing wrong or is this just how life will be 😏
Any advice on unison audio drag and drop midi in ableton?
Not sure what you need to know exactly. I have the midi chord pack and you simply drag and drop the midi files onto a midi track and the notes/chords appear on the timeline and piano roll.
Hello, glad I found this, had an intuition this was the way to go for most flexibility and less headache. There is a problem though, I see no path to the VST plugin. Where do I find it or activate it? Cheers
See around 3:03, click on the small arrow to the right of where it says 'PLUGIN'.
TUBE DIGGA thank you you are really helpful. Your videos are the best i have found i am watching them all
I found the plugin and that’s working, sync from MPC to Ableton happening but MIDI transmited from MPC to Ableton Live when I hit the pads is not received; i do have the preferences in Ableton set properly. By the way MIDI in on MPC is labeled 1 & 2 not A & B , which is weird. I am using the same MIDI I connect device as you. I do not get it, not yet anyway: why suggestions?
My MPC ONE will not show in ableton preferences. And the mpc one doesn't show output A. Only 1 -52 outputs or so. Any suggestions? I'm using the midi to USB connecter.
There’s several settings you need to check which I don’t have time to go into detail about here. You may also be using the wrong cable at the 5 pin midi end of the interface. For example my one has MIDI IN printed on the white cable which comes from the MPC output - which means midi being sent out from MPC to Ableton. It would make more sense to be labelled midi out. If you need detailed help then email me to set up a Zoom lesson. Email address is in the video description 👍
Great tutorial! Is it also possible to do this with a MPC studio?
Sam Derene MPC Studio is already a midi controller - you should be able to use it to control Ableton like any other usb midi controller I’d imagine
Later will get the MPC Live hardware.Cheers!
Can this be done on the MPC ONE as well
Yes
I guess the plugin is only 64bit right?
Can this not be done by using Abelton link as WiFi as mpc x has WiFi?
And would love a vid showing abit Detroit techno-acid 303/ drexciya stylee .

Do you still fill the same way ?
About what?
Hi I’m using the mpc studio 1.9 and after the following this method I’m unable to see the notes on Ableton live 9 track although it’s showing on the mpc vst. Do I need to buy an Interface?
Brucey Leonis You need to enable/arm the main recording button and the midi track in Ableton, it sounds like you’re just recording midi into the MPC plugin itself.
mpc vs. drum rack??/ drum rack is pretty darn good, this may be redundant in ableton
Great videos in your channel.Really useful and detailed.
Would you please focus more on chopping and reconstruct chopped phrazes in different tempo contexts?Warp function sucks so would be great to have a help from you!
Tube digga - does using ableton link solve the problem of latency while recording? My guess is no, but I was wondering if you could explain why not..
Jeong Lim I’m afraid I haven’t used Ableton Link myself as my studio is Ethernet and not WiFi - but I’ve seen many positive comments on Facebook groups saying it works very well.
I have a windows laptop and a USB audio interface that has midi on the back. Will that work in the same sense? It's a presonus audio box with 2 ins and 2 midi ins so would that work like the thing you're using?
Thomas Jones It may do - I don’t have one myself so just try it - as long as the Presonus is receiving midi from your mpc and in turn is sending that out to the laptop then it should be fine.
@tubedigga thanks for the reply. I wasnt home at the time I saw this video and definitely plan to. Thanks for always crushing the tutorials man keep doing what you do!.
Hi Tube Digga. Managed to get the sounds triggering but when I play the MPC, Ableton Live does not start or sync. Played with some settings, but to no avail. Can you please specify how I need the sync options setup on both machines. I looked at some previous feedback but could not work it out. Any assistance would be appreciated.
@DiamRuff - I am having the same issue. Were you able to figure out a solution?
Hello I was not able to connect my mpc x following these instructions. Are there any other updates or something I can do to fix this.
Or if possible can you do an updated video on this topic? Thanks for your vids :)
Reset your USB ports maybe? When it comes to computers it could be many different things. If you’re all up to date with the software/drivers/firmware and have checked the cables etc it’s most likely an issue with your computer.
Do you know who would?
Good stuff! Can u do a video on best workflow for transferring songs from Ableton to MPC for portability and live performances including vocal backing tracks? Like I think this video will get me going in the right direction but I’m particularly looking for good workflow to import the VST and vocal audio back into MPC. I’m imagining something like breaking my Ableton songs up as separate sequences and inserting markers in Ableton accordingly. I just got the MPC so most of my songs are entirely in Ableton at the moment but that will change over time if I can come up with easy workflow to build most of song in MPC then do all the VST and automation work and vocals in Ableton then import back into MPC so I can just take that as a stand-alone backing track for my own live vocal and live synth playing with my Ultranova. Thanks in advance!!!!!!
ozzelthecomposer This might help you
in the meantime, it covers some of what you’re asking for: ua-cam.com/video/b9mtxFiw570/v-deo.html
Thanks. Just trying this method out now and although I've got the preferences set up just like yours and EXT selected in Ableton, when I press play on the MPC, nothing happens. Also, apologies as I just got the MPC less than a week ago, under the plugin section where it says hybrid, none of my expansions, VSTs, or plugins are showing up there although the expansions are on the far right side.
Disregard comment above about plugins as I figured that out but MIDI still not playing or stopping Ableton.
I conduct private lessons via Google Hangouts if you need me to get you all set up and running, plus anything else you want to learn. PM me at tubedigga@gmail.com for details
does it send audio over usb ? or do you need a soundcard
philip formby It can be used as an audio interface but only in controller mode. This video is using it in standalone so in this case the audio interface functionality won’t be available.
So for whatever reason my MPC 2.0 software is not recognizing any inputs on my audio interface (Scarlett 2i4) so I can't sample record in MPC 2.0 from external... so instead of actually trying to fix that issue I figure I'd work around it by recording external using Ableton and then migrate the audio sample into MPC.
My question is... is this possible with one of the setups you described in this video? Would this require that you work Ableton into MPC? I.e. does this work with MPC worked into Ableton (as a plugin or otherwise)?
I understand I can record in Ableton, export audio, and then import on the MPC side. I'd like to avoid those extra steps if possible.
Thanks!
pepitochavez MPC 2.0 should recognise your interface - are all your USB drivers and the software all up to date? Personally this method is preferable anyway as I find Ableton easier to work with as far as software goes. You get access to Ableton, Mpc plugin and your MPC in standalone. You could either sample into your mpc hardware or Ableton.
gotcha! it recognizes my interface, just not the inputs... very weird problem seems to be unique to MPC. Ableton recognizes all inputs on my interface no problem. I'll have to dig a bit deeper. thanks!
How do you get MPC to show up under plug ins?
??
Dennis Daley Mac or Pc?
PC
Dennis Daley You should have a folder in program files called ‘steinberg’, I think you may have to copy the mpc plug in into there or add the Mpc plugin folder to Abletons VST directory so it knows where to look and scan the plugins again. Make sure you use the x64 plugin folder.
@@TUBEDIGGA That didn't work
For this to work does the track that you select on the MPC plugin have to be plugin?? or will this work with a normal drum track??
Yes, you can use your MPC as you normally would, it just allows you to use Ableton or any other DAW alongside so it's in sync.
@@TUBEDIGGA Thats so strange, for some reason when I load the 809 plugin within the mpc plugin like you have done it works, but when I have the track type as a normal drum track the MPC stops being able to tigger the drum tracks. Even when clicking them with the mouse, sound is registering but nothing is recording into the track inside ableton live
@@TUBEDIGGA Do you know how to fix this or why this is happening, I cannot figure it out?? thankyou !
I believe that you can only use one track in the MPC plugin to Ableton.. Other wise it will mess the track together, from my experience.
Hey, Does anyone know if you can you transfer a pre arranged Midi clip (.mid file) from Abelton to the MPC live ?
GAA Yes you can.
Having trouble syncing the clock sync delay..... It doesnt seem to be changing the midi clock on the mpc to match the ableton clock. Any other tips on that part? I sent you some loot yesterday! I love all the tips and tricks on your page.
Matthew McLean Hi Matthew, thanks for your kind donation, I sent you an email yesterday to thank you. If the MPC is sending midi out to Ableton then Ableton should automatically receive the tempo (top left sync button set to EXT) - providing you have everything set up correctly in Ableton’s midi set up page and the MPC sync settings are correct.
TUBE DIGGA EXT button is probably what I missed. I got the thank you email for sure. I appreciate the reply!
Okay.... SOOO.. Can I setup this midi on track one and then setup my expansion packs on track two and send both midi and audio data at the same time? What I really want is the midi notes and the audio with the ability to overdub and use the standalone version of the MPC. I tried opening track 2 but I lose midi data. Ive got my audio coming through my audio interface via 1/4 mogami cables but I lose midi data as soon as I switch to the second track and add a expansion drum set into my drum program.
Matthew McLean Matthew McLean Are you sure you’re not changing the midi program loaded on to the current track? This is a common mistake people make - they don’t change the track but swap the program or change the mode of the track instead. Otherwise there’s no reason why the midi would stop when switching tracks.
When I select a new track to track 2 the midi data is immediately lost. I might have to do a direct call/video with you at some point. I feel like it shouldn't stop sending midi data when I switch tracks.
I've got a midi line and a direct cable line. I get midi notes when i am on the midi track and audio when on the drum program, but I want both at the same time.
Hello matey. Just an idea for a vid (if you really need one lol)
Because of the MPC live coming out I've purchased my first piece of hardware in about 10 years! It's also my first AKAI sampler as I've always had Korg etc.
So I only have a really light understanding of how to use this thing.
Because of your vids I'm getting there though and it's made me realise how much it can do and now it's even scarier.
Anyway! even though I can use it/copy, I don't actually understand and know what things are if you get me? The terminology etc. It'd be kinda cool for someone to explain that in a simple easy to understand way. Even if it's just a rough sketch like "song, sequence, track, etc"
Hope that makes sense. Niceone.
I’ve actually recorded a complete beginners video but have yet to edit it. Been reluctant to get it finished but now realising the Live has attracted so many completely new users so maybe it’s time. I appreciate the suggestion as it’ll prompt me to get it wrapped this week - stay tuned :)
But can u use Push to play and control MPC Live hardware factory sound?
Tri Vo I don’t have Push so I’m not certain, you’ll be able to control the MPC plug in with it for sure as it is a VST/AU
A little out of context: Can I buy The Vault 2.0 (soundpack) for my Ableton DAW without buying AKAI MPC Live or X?
I’m not sure, if you’ve bought MPC2.0 it may be a free download, or if you have one of the other controllers. I had to register my MPC Live to access the free content. If you’ve registered a product on akaipro.com then check your account and see what you’re entitled to.
Alright. thanks.
does this work with logic pro x because i hate controller mode where you have to use the mpc plugin because it sucks... and if i can use this method in logic please explain to me how because this will help me move so much faster
It should, I don’t have Logic but setting this up should be a similar process.
I tried today but had no success but I was rushing and tired after work as well so maybe i didn't do it right but all I know is that when I hit a pad on my mpc x the touch screens midi out box flashes but I have no sound but when I push play in logic it starts my mpc x as well but i still have no sound please help me get this right because going into controller mode really slows me down and it cumbersome. I have the exact midi cables that you used i think im just doing something wrong in my settings
Gameboy 80 Gameboy 80 If Logic is starting your MPC then this tells me you may have a midi feedback loop - you’re trying to control Logic with the MPC but your MPC is also receiving midi from Logic. Remove any midi connections from Logic to the MPC midi input. Just slave Logic to the MPC. If you’re still having trouble then PM at tubedigga@gmail.com and we can arrange a 1 to 1 lesson
Do you know how to control pro tools with the MPC Live, and does this mpc have transport control with this method?
Yes I imagine you can just slave Pro Tools in the same way as I show in this video.
TUBE DIGGA ok I just ordered the m-audio uno
TUBE DIGGA it works.👍👍
Cool task!
great method bro
None of this worked and I’m on my last nerve. Ableton does not recognize my mpc unless I’m in controller mode. Yes I have the correct midi cable setup.
I can get this to work for you but you'll have to book a 1 on 1 session with me. It's not something I can describe in detail on here, I've already tried to do that with the video - if it's not working it could be a million different reasons due to your particular set up etc as everyone is different. Email me at tubedigga@gmail.com if you're interested.
I think 1.9.6 was stable in Live
Nice on, but my is just sitting on the "looking for computer" message. Am I missing something? For the record I'm on my laptop. Usually when on the PC it works straight away. Hmm...
You just need to exit controller mode
@@TUBEDIGGA I think it was the drivers. I went back, uninstalled and reinstalled everything fresh and I'm rolling. Thanks for the swift response regardless. I'm not following the page. All the best!!
