    Thank you for this helpful video matey, I’ve learned so much from it and from reading the comments below. It’s encouraging to know that cacti take time to recover having been repotted from peat to a mineral mix. 🙏🏻

    awesome .. Other yoytubers that I see are too technical. Yours one is the best and a very candid one. Good to know that the brown colours at the base is due to ageing, Saw some other videos where they mentioned that its due to root rot . Thanks for info .

    Hi there - great informative video on how to repot cacti - cool tips 😎 - in addition, I will be buying some chunkier grit to mix with my standard grit. Thanks.

    I tried making my own mineral mix, well see how well it works. I wasnt able to find pumice, but instead i used coarse sand + pea gravel. + zeolite to a vermicompost + perlite and coco/peat commercial soil. Its much coarser than what I used to use, and hopefully it will work better than before. Now its significantly less organic though(

      Sounds like a great mix to me! Pumice is notoriously difficult to source, when I found it this time I bought 4 great big bags of it! For rot prone cacti you can go 100% mineral mix, I still like my cacti to be reasonably plump though so will usually be within the 80-90% range for mineral content. I'd love to hear how your new mix goes, keep in mind it will likely be 12 months before you notice improvement as cacti will usually take a backwards step at first when changing to a mineral mix but they come back much much stronger. Thanks for watching and Happy Gardening!

    Your potting medium is perfect😌🤲💖Nice and mineral with plenty of drainage. I use a volcanic clay called akadama and river sand to pot cacti. They do well in it. It contains all valuable nutrients for growth. I do add fertilizer, The one that is animal manure pellets. They don't cause root burn. I'm entering the winter now. I have many varieties ready to undergo a winter with temperatures down to -8℃ at night and day temperatures of about 10/13℃ with sunshine, in an unheated greenhouse.

    Nice video, I've another question though. After repotting the cactus is it okay to water it immediately? Thanks.

    • @87walker
      @87walker  6 років тому +9

      Thank-you for your comment, in answer to your question no you should never water a cactus immediately after re potting. The only time you would do that is when working with very small seedlings. Best to wait at least a week or 2 for the roots to heal otherwise the cactus might rot. Thanks for watching & Happy Gardening!

    I bought a some cactus plant soft type and when I got home I remove it from the original plastic pouch and wash all the wood chip and soil then air dried for 5 days. After 5 days I re-pot it using my mix of 50% punice 50% lome soil then water it but after 3 days one of the cactus body turn to really like a jelly. What maybe wrong ? Thanks for sharing.

    • @87walker
      @87walker  3 роки тому +1

      Sound like the roots were damaged during repotting which has caused rot from watering too early.
      There is no need to air dry roots after removing old soil, also I would not wash the roots.
      Just brush off the old soil, pot up and wait 2 weeks minimum (depends on season) and then water.
      Happy Gardening!

    I lost one of my son's san pedro about 8 months ago, I was beyond devastated. I have tried to keep them alive for years. There's one left and I am terrified to re pot it. That's how I killed the other one.

    • @87walker
      @87walker  6 років тому +2

      Hi there, losing a plant can really be devastating I know the feeling all too well. Where abouts do you live and what happened exactly to the san pedro you lost? They are generally considered to be quite a tough plant so some information on how you keep it will help.

      87walker thank you so much for replying. I live in North Georgia usa, above the city Atlanta. The plants are inside, in a corner room that has a skylight above and 2 regular house windows on each side of the corner. No direct light unless I move it closer to the window and that would only be afternoon light 2pm until night. Now about the cacti. The top on both of them look bright green and much smaller then the rest of it. I felt they both needed a bigger pot and new soil. I decided to only do anything to only 1, just in case something went wrong. So I watched videos, I saw ideas on how to cut the top off at an angle with a super clean sharp knife and plant that piece too. So I cleaned the knife with alcohol and cut the top off. The base of these cacti is around 8 to 11 inches. Mixed up sand, volcano looking rocks, and a little bit of "cacti soil" from the garden store. In about a week and a half I noticed at the base of the big one it had a mushy spot. The top piece I planted was almost complete mush on the inside. I watched more videos and saw to cut off / out the mush part on the big cacti. It was all down hill from there. Nothing worked I tried to save it, but it seemed that everything I did made it worse. Now I'm so worried to loose this one. These were my son's plants. He grew them from tiny tiny. He cherished them. We always cared for all of our plants together. My son was killed in 2016 so I feel so very attached to these cacti that were his. Thank you for any advice 💜

      Oh my goodness, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I'll do my best to help you care for the remaining cactus. Ok, when a cactus thins out at the top it is due to insufficient light and is called etiolation. Cacti are not very suited to living indoors, it takes a very specific type of indoors to keep them happy and thriving. The soil mix you have described sounds perfectly fine, when you say volcano rocks are they are a reddish colour? If so it's called scoria it comes in many sizes and is great for cactus. I researched the area where you are from and the outdoor climate seems fine for San Pedro cactus except when there is the threat of snow or frost, so for most of the year your cactus should be fine to live outside, you will need to keep the plant much much drier in the late autumn and winter though and consider bringing it inside when/if there is snow or frost. When moving the plant outside chose somewhere sheltered from direct sun, under a light tree would be great or somewhere that gets morning or afternoon sun but not both. It will take time for the plant to adjust to the real outdoor sun and so a gradual introduction will be best. If you have Facebook you can post a photo of your cactus and soil on my page which will help. If there is any more info you need please let me know.. Happy Gardening!

    Do you have a compost heap? If so, when you throw out your soil, I think it's a good idea to just chuck it on the compost so that you are returning it to nature. Peace brother!

      I recycle soil.
      Have for the past decade, the substrate is passed through 2 grades of sieve and only the very fine particles are discarded at the end.
      If the mix is total organic then it goes back to the earth, not in the rubbish.
      Happy Gardening!

    Beautiful cacti..wonderful! How often do you water your cacti? Do you water them just after repoting? Thank you!

    • @87walker
      @87walker  6 років тому +5

      Thank you so much for your comment. I never water immediately after re potting I always wait at least 2 weeks to allow the roots to heal, this prevents rot. I run a few different watering cycles depending on the time of the year. In the active growing phase I water 1-3 times per week. During the winter phase I do not water at all and this can last up to 4 months. During the wind up and down from the growing phase I water about every 2-3 weeks. Hope that helps & Happy Gardening!

    I just repotted my Mamillaria and I broke some of the minor roots accidentally
    Will my cactus suffer from this?

    • @87walker
      @87walker  4 роки тому

      Should be ok, some root breakage is to be expected during repotting. Just withhold watering for several weeks to allow the roots to heal.
      Best of luck & Happy Gardening!

    In how many days do you water your plants in winter temp around 25 in day and 14 degree in night.

    • @87walker
      @87walker  4 роки тому

      Temperatures like that are like late spring and early autumn here. So I would water with my usual growing season method.
      Weekly for cactus that like more water and every 10-14 days for rot prone cactus.
      Happy Gardening!

    What is the composition of your potting mix?

    • @87walker

      I do have a cactus soil mix video on my channel however I need to record another one. For gymnocalycium (and most cacti) a 70/30 mix will work just fine. That being 70% gravel and the remainder being organic material.
