Last thing I remember I was running for the door. I had to find the passage back to the place I was before. "Relax" said the night-man, "we are programmed to receive. You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave."
I was pleased to hear I wasn't the only one that felt this map in particular had a much more oppressive atmosphere compared to the previous ones. I have to commend the map maker for only pushing the bar higher.
Yeah it did kinda felt that way. However... I could argue Pinkplace, in my opinion, had a 'more-oppressive atmosphere' than White Complex had. Mainly probably because that's were you first come across this "Jimmy" fellow in-person. I have feeling Jimmy might make more appearances later on in this thing.
Good points the real horror of back rooms is like the megalophobia aspect of trying to conceptualize Infinity of the environment like being lost in deep space or the ocean just endless expanse in every direction and nothing to anchor you coming to the conclusion that this is your new normal this is your forever there is no escape that is truly more horrifying then a monster because at least a monster you can run away or fight it but you can't fight time it's part of why death scares us because of its permanence knowing whatever you experience it's never gonna stop
Hell, it goes even more conceptual that just the running and fighting. A monster is something you can understand. Even if it´s actual motives may be not, it´s "concept" is rather simple, a hostile being focused in a thing you can quantify. That´s why a monster is scary. It may be overcome or avoided, even if it is extreamly dangerous. The Backrooms themselves? Those are horryfing, not scary. Being scared is a physical reaction caused by fear. A discomfort but a neccesary reaction. Being scared of something dangrous keeps us alive. Any animal that has some degree of sentience can be scared. Horror on the other hand? Thats uniquely human. Horror requires sapience, an understanding of self and complex concepts. It´s not something that gets your blood pumping and makes you want to run or fight. It slowly creeps in, this sinking feeling in you stomache and sudden realisation of it. A feeling of bleakness that crushes out any hope caused by understanding the concept of the situation exactly. A good example to make it easier to get is Alien. The Xenomorph is horrendously disgusting and scary. But the situatrion? The concept of being trapped in a small ship in the endless emptiness of space, with nowhere to run and no way to reasonably fight the monster without also destroying that deadly prison which is at the same time keeping you alive? That is horror. And the Backrooms are a great example of horror. They are not scary at all. Just a nonsensical jumble of unsettling "just barely not quite build by and for humans" architecture. Not the most comfortable place to be in, but by far not the worst or depending of what shape they take, even most hostile. But the further one would go, the more one would search for anything really, the more horrifying they would become. Because they never end, one sameish nonsensical hallway or room onto the next. No sun, no outside, no end. All alone. Just endless hallways going on forever. And that, is absolutely horifying, and crushing in a way that is hard to describe. A dreadful and hopeless place, seperated from everyone and anything that dwarfs your existence by a degree that cannot be understood existing for no understandable reason.
50:35 I just love the visual of the Librarian crouching on top of a sink while poring over cryptic documents and pointing at anything of interest with his gun, mumbling something about hotels and vending machines while Jimmy and Philip Jeffries just watch from the doorway confused
So, if I’m remembering correctly, it looks like the area at 1:11:13 (and maybe even the prior area with that backrooms hallway) is a recreation of an area from gm_voidspaces. It was the area where the doors were opening and closing to guide you through the hallways, the paintings fell off the walls, and (although it wasn’t in the video) Jimmy could appear in the doorway if you took the right path.
city creek center in salt lake, utah is an indoor mall with a creek running all throughout the bottom floor, on the second floor there are bridges over it- it also has skylights that open during the summer. it's a wonderfully-designed space and extremely cosy. once while i was in the city late at night for a concert i got to walk through it while it was mostly empty. there was this moody ambient lighting and the artificial streams had been emptied- i assume it drained back into some central tank in a basement or something, where they could take care of the koi they stocked in it. but it appeared as though the creek suddenly dried up and the fish disappeared into thin air. i thought of your gmod exploration videos as i made my way back to my car. as i watch more, i get the sense that this complex was made by a being who likes humans, who wants to help them and protect them, but doesn't really understand what they need to be safe and cared for... they've seen human structures and have a vague sense of their purpose and meaning, but only vague, and thus when they try to recreate it in their "haven" for humanity (perhaps, to help protect them against the sun that's _not the sun_ ), where they want it to feel comfortable and comforting, it only feels eerie and uncanny. the same with the intercom system giving announcements- this entity may have trouble understanding the meanings of words and rhythmic patterns of human speech (in english, anyway) so even trying to declare things like "you are safe here and we welcome you" sounds threatening and alarming.
56:04 My guess is that it's specifically pulling from music videos of the era and the way they're lit, etc. Never Gonna Give You Up is the obvious one, but look at almost any pop music video from the mid-80s and you'll likely see similar aesthetics.
I love the aesthetic of this map, it just suffered the same problem that the one before it (the mall one I believe and I think pink place) had, which is that you sort of just run in circles after a certain point until you find the next door to unlock like 3 doors.
The rubber balls you're finding may be important, as they're one of the few interaction pieces in these maps aside from doors. This map series is using vanilla Source level transitions in singleplayer. It's not just loading a map, it's loading it like HL2 singleplayer does. One thing this means is that objects (and NPCs!) can travel between maps if they're in the transition zone when you change levels. Those balls you were finding can in fact be carried to other maps if you go through the transition (I tested), assuming you don't need to restart the map due to VR bugs. They are also flagged to generate entity output on +using them. They may eventually be important. EDIT: Apparently they're actually references to a scrapped ball pit feature on one of the maps. But, they can still be taken between levels so there's always the chance they will be useful!
This one feels differnt from the Voidmall, which is unsettling but surprisingly alive for an abandoned mall from beyond time and space. Pink Place that was just surreal and creepy. And Voidplaces that was very oppressive. This one just feels bleak and hostile. In a very apathic and non agressive way. It´s not the hostility of a dangerous place but a quite specific discomfort of tresspassing. It really feels more like a tomb. Where the others felt abandoned and left behind, this one feels like no one went by choice, or actually really left and went somewhere at all. It feels pretty damn haunted. And nice to see Phillip Jeffreys visit. Still love the odd but also very mundane name for some avatar of an eldritch entety. And I really love these maps in general. They have something a lot of others lack. A certain feeling that is hard to nail down. And I will always love the visual of the "not a sun". What actually is it? We don´t know, but it *isn`t the sun.* That is some lovecraft stuff right there.
you should make a playlist for this series of gmod maps, This is the first gmod video I've watched in a while but it seems like I'm missing out on some context from the earlier maps in the series
Ohhhhh. The "Now Here" keycard leads to the mall. It was always meant to say Now-here instead of No-where, the entities just got the space between wrong
10:17 - Okay now I KNOW the creator and developer of these maps are messing with you on a personal level! We kinda already saw that in the previous one with that "fan-art" graffiti in that one section.
Also I can CLEARLY TELL you're going slowly insane in this video! Trust me... If I were in the same situation, or scenario as you were while playing this map; I'd go mad too!
Is it just me or is there a small lingering anticipation that the Maps might change drastically in the future if you spend too much time on them, like just out of the blue, A map begins to become far less subtle because you're slow
The map will literally crash my PC if I play it again so I guess it's back to watching the librarian (pinkblack if ur reading this pls remove the glass shaders)
One of my solution to the "i got lost" is a very silly take of Gmod. I summon a can and put it on the floor. That way I know I was in the area once. Also, it was just my feeling but I thought the booms are like cannons, as if outside someone is shelling the area. It made me feel like any moment now, the Combine troops will trigger the alarms on the way... but it was just my feeling.
I just went to Voidplaces and it's soooo different now! It has a cool intro now too. Edit: So far I've seen only a single slightly recognizable place, it's basically a whole new map from the little I've seen. Edit 2: Okay that was an exaggeration, but there's cool new stuff.
Spoilers for the end of the video I've been thinking, about how you keep getting told to "retrace your steps"... Do you need to go backwards through the entire series now? You did mention the older maps had been getting updates. If we assume that's true, that means the true end would presumably be at the very beginning of all this. That would be really fucking cool, I hope I'm not building this up in my head higher than it could realistically go.
The first map, voidspaces, has a new intro where the pink sun is seen actually appearing, confirming that you were once in a normal apartment before it got changed. I'm not sure if pinkplaces changed, but the representations of Inno on voidmall also got a new design. Ah, and there seem to be multiple exits to each map potentially? I don't know if the exit to Voidmall still exists on voidspaces, but the main exit that closed originally now goes to Pinkplaces, which then goes to White Complex, which then goes to the mall.
Ya know, after the last map I think forming a mental map is just imposible for these, cant wait to see how librarian handles it on this map after going damn near insane last time
I wanted so bad to play this myself but linux garry's mod hates some larger maps and will work at first but after you move around a bit it'll just hang forever.
This map seems to have some genuine performance issues as over half of the map unloads and reloads when passing certain points. one small spot causes it constantly and drops your fps to like, 5. Some type of bug with the brushes that determine how the map is drawn. It's the spot where Librarian hears scraping from beyond a door, opens it, and then the painting falls. It's really obvious with GMiniMap. Also the tree mural in the center-ish of the map might have too many lighting effects or something? I'm not sure what its deal is, but it causes a heavy fps drop just by looking at it.
@@fusrosandvich3738 ah. Yeah maybe this is just an initial release and it'll get optimized. I dunno what the issue is with Linux gmod though. Some huge and complex maps are totally fine, some just hang up like that.
I finally played this and while I liked the first 3... if the librarian was getting frustrated about not knowing what to activate or what door to go through I definitely would've given up and not enjoyed myself. I kinda felt the same with the first installment voidplacea and the second voidmall but voidmall I got through. pinkplace is probably the one i enjoyed the most though there was a similar bit of time where I was just not knowing where to go and just kinda running around through doors and hallways like a Scooby Doo bit but i did get through that.
Thanks to The Librarian, I have been listening into the lyrics of the songs off the speakers in the VP maps closely and I think I’m figuring out what Inno is basically saying through the lyrics. I’ll leave the time stamps in the edit section when I make one. Edit: 1:47:16 and lastly 1:49:10 and yes, anyone curious might wanna tap on these enough times until you understand what most of, if not every word basically is saying. I take no credit from The Liberian, even though his videos got me interested in the lore of these maps made by Pn’k Black. All I done was put in time stamps into the edit of my comment out of being interested in the lore of these maps, places made by the respective creator.
The Respected* creator of these maps of his, Pn’k Black himself is what I was trying to say in my edit in my own comment. However, I’ve been encountering a glitch or a bug that whenever I try to edit in my original comment, it kinda forces me to rewrite my own edit, so I’ll just leave this “Correction” of mine here.

That's a whole other map you can also play, vp_voidmall
A dreadful and hopeless place, seperated from everyone and anything that dwarfs your existence by a degree that cannot be understood existing for no understandable reason.
you don't understand how much this cheered me up from how i was feelin lol
homestuck spotted!! deploying tactical missiles 🚀🚀🚀
@@deadlyadder2330 OH GOD
50:35 I just love the visual of the Librarian crouching on top of a sink while poring over cryptic documents and pointing at anything of interest with his gun, mumbling something about hotels and vending machines while Jimmy and Philip Jeffries just watch from the doorway confused
The eldritch horrors are confused about why the human isn't coping very well with their best attempt at building an enclosure
Also I DID NOT know Jimmy also made a cameo in this map!
That Pink Girl is just super dang cute
One of the best map makers in Gmod for *SURE*
2 hours of Garry's Mod exploration? I'm sleeping good tonight.
city creek center in salt lake, utah is an indoor mall with a creek running all throughout the bottom floor, on the second floor there are bridges over it- it also has skylights that open during the summer. it's a wonderfully-designed space and extremely cosy.
once while i was in the city late at night for a concert i got to walk through it while it was mostly empty. there was this moody ambient lighting and the artificial streams had been emptied- i assume it drained back into some central tank in a basement or something, where they could take care of the koi they stocked in it. but it appeared as though the creek suddenly dried up and the fish disappeared into thin air. i thought of your gmod exploration videos as i made my way back to my car.
as i watch more, i get the sense that this complex was made by a being who likes humans, who wants to help them and protect them, but doesn't really understand what they need to be safe and cared for... they've seen human structures and have a vague sense of their purpose and meaning, but only vague, and thus when they try to recreate it in their "haven" for humanity (perhaps, to help protect them against the sun that's _not the sun_ ), where they want it to feel comfortable and comforting, it only feels eerie and uncanny. the same with the intercom system giving announcements- this entity may have trouble understanding the meanings of words and rhythmic patterns of human speech (in english, anyway) so even trying to declare things like "you are safe here and we welcome you" sounds threatening and alarming.
Fellow Utahn! :D
@@TheThunderGhost oh dang, cool 👋
56:04 My guess is that it's specifically pulling from music videos of the era and the way they're lit, etc. Never Gonna Give You Up is the obvious one, but look at almost any pop music video from the mid-80s and you'll likely see similar aesthetics.
32:59 Oh, hey... it's a pair of Observer Spies...
12:50 Absolutely PEAK sound design in this segment. They hit it out of the park.
THE Best one series of gmod exploring videos. It has so deep and crazy stuff in all that maps, that drive me nuts! Love it.
The use of Music and the way it is the Voice of the White Complex is insane.
I can't belive how exited I was to read that title considering it's a garry's mod map.
the librarian is the canonical protag of every story map
I love the aesthetic of this map, it just suffered the same problem that the one before it (the mall one I believe and I think pink place) had, which is that you sort of just run in circles after a certain point until you find the next door to unlock like 3 doors.
I find the "we will watch you forever" as oddly endearing, maybe too oddly.
I saw this map on the workshop and said "i hope the librarian plays this"
I've been playing these vp_ maps while toasty, and needless to say its great
This one feels differnt from the Voidmall, which is unsettling but surprisingly alive for an abandoned mall from beyond time and space.
Ive never been so hyped at a Gmod map vid, I just love these maps
GRAAA I’ve just binge watched the last 3 Vp_ maps and saw this gem pop up
you should make a playlist for this series of gmod maps, This is the first gmod video I've watched in a while but it seems like I'm missing out on some context from the earlier maps in the series
This was a fun one! can you PLEASE continue with the Pajama Sam series, i thoroughly enjoyed the first playthrough 😫
I'm definitely down for the cult of Inno, tbh
Because of how well u detail the place u should play all gmods n backroom games cause we always experience new when u play frfr❤❤❤
Ohhhhh. The "Now Here" keycard leads
to the mall. It was always meant to say Now-here instead of No-where, the entities just got the space between wrong
Wooo yeah baby
That's what I've been waitin for
These maps and your increasing distress and madness over time is very magnus archives spiral coded
10:14 oh hey it's the demon rock fellow from the other map
Funny candle guy Is back!
For some reason, this reminds me of the world we wake up into in Portal 2. Like, before we enter the laboratory. Maybe it's just Source.
Once u say Garry's mod I get SOOOOO excited ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Philip Jeffrey's just following you across the universe, that was a bit of a jump scare.
These series of maps strangely gives me Boneworks vibe. Try that out too, the liminal spaces are absolutely gorgeous in it.
a place for humans, a labrinth to stay
Phillip Jeffery reminds me of the obelisk from 2001 Space Odyssey.
10:18 NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I didnt know this was a series! i need a playlist so bad!
Is it just me or is there a small lingering anticipation that the Maps might change drastically in the future if you spend too much time on them, like just out of the blue, A map begins to become far less subtle because you're slow
Another great video on another great map
Wow you have an intro toon now that's dope man
The map will literally crash my PC if I play it again so I guess it's back to watching the librarian (pinkblack if ur reading this pls remove the glass shaders)
One of my solution to the "i got lost" is a very silly take of Gmod. I summon a can and put it on the floor. That way I know I was in the area once.
Also, it was just my feeling but I thought the booms are like cannons, as if outside someone is shelling the area. It made me feel like any moment now, the Combine troops will trigger the alarms on the way... but it was just my feeling.
when that map released the others got an update aswell ! a revisit of the older maps would be awesome me thinks
when you said "What a saga" i genuinely thought you said "What the sigma"
phillip jefferies is a parody of the recognizer.
you should group these in a separate exploration playlist so its easier to navigate then searching for the chronological order of the videos.
i was waiting for this to eat my food :D
was waiting for this one!
This series is great
Hey, you should play the previous maps again and see the changes because they look amazing. Love your videos❤
Long time no see...YT hadn't recommended me your videos in a while...so I'll probably revise upon the lost knowledge that UA-cam hadn'tshowed me😂❤
Two hours of Gmod, count me in
1:49:00 There it is! [dancing uncontrollably]
Do you know the name of the song ?
@@eljamaicano1 Yes! “Leave me alone” from Voidmall.
complex white
great thing to come back from work to
I thought this was gonna take several months to come out lmao.
i wonder if Inno is looking for a wife / girlfriend / pet ...
Impressive vertical map design
I just went to Voidplaces and it's soooo different now! It has a cool intro now too.
Edit: So far I've seen only a single slightly recognizable place, it's basically a whole new map from the little I've seen.
Edit 2: Okay that was an exaggeration, but there's cool new stuff.
I love the intro
this reminds me so much of Abiotic Factor
Spoilers for the end of the video
I've been thinking, about how you keep getting told to "retrace your steps"...
The paper mentions the WC people. Im pretty sure that means white complex which at one point was a research area
Whitecomplex? what about the other colors
I feel as though I have a bit of a bluecomplex myself
I kinda felt the same with the first installment voidplacea and the second voidmall but voidmall I got through. pinkplace is probably the one i enjoyed the most though there was a similar bit of time where I was just not knowing where to go and just kinda running around through doors and hallways like a Scooby Doo bit but i did get through that.
did you just ask if anything in the eighties or nineties had a neon look?? I think I just heard all the "sims" death sounds at once inside of me :,D
Also pink black has a youtube channel, you can find the malls full song there
Thanks to The Librarian, I have been listening into the lyrics of the songs off the speakers in the VP maps closely and I think I’m figuring out what Inno is basically saying through the lyrics.

Are you sure it's just a low wind?
Yes more gmod!!!
youd think there would be a mod for like chalk without it being counted as a decal
The paint tool can emulate that. There's even X and O decals you can use to mark things out.
@@Techhunter_Talon It has a very low limit, sadly, so that wouldnt work. on pinkplaces it started deleting the marks he left behind.
@@fusrosandvich3738 If I recall, it was likely because he was using its rapid fire function. Which will layer on a bunch of decals all at once even if you just tap it.
Why are the textures so simplistic in this one?
