    I was at the Swansea v Lincoln match in may 1987. Considering what was at stake for them, they went down with a whimper. I was also at Swans v Burnley in Feb 87, a 2-2 draw. One of your players, Ashley Hoskins scored one of the best individual goals, I’ve ever witnessed live.

    I was there. My first game as a fan I was 15 ..... What an experience, nothing like it , I continued to go to all the home and away fixtures for the next 2 seasons....then I joined the RAF..... But been a fan ever since.
    At 46 now I'm so proud of what Burnley have achieved, the right way with the bank too.
    Now living in Devon I find it difficult to get to, or afford to go and watch my beloved. I like to think my support was when they needed it the most.

      Also still have the yellow match day programme. And only a season later Burnley went Wembley way vs Wolves in the Sherpa Van Trophy final.

    I'm a Wolves fan, but I remember reading an interview about this game from Neil Grewcock back when Burnley were promoted to the Premier League. He asked George Courtney (The ref) how much injury time there would be (Don't forget, this was well before the advent of fourth officials displaying how much injury time would be played; it was purely in the referee's head how long the match would last)
    Grewcock: "How long to go ref?"
    Courtney "5 minutes left"
    Grewcock, pointing to the Longside Terrace "Ref, there are 15,000 people on this ground, they are invading the pitch at the end of the match whatever happens. At the minute, they are coming on the pitch happy..."
    Courtney proceeded to play just 1 minute of injury time...

    I won't knock those players who played in the years between being in the first division till this game (some good some who should be ashamed of wearing the Claret & blue and getting paid) but where would we be now without the efforts of these players on that day. Thanks to all those players since that day that contributed to a slow steady rise to where we are today. I could mention my HEROES but it would cause a meaningless debate because we came back from the brink and because we are Burnley, if they're your HEROES they're mine too. " Up The Clarets ".

      Burnley were a real force to be reckoned with in the 60's and 70's. Hard to believe a club of such stature could have been on the brink of relegation from the Football League.

    Please help a Canadian claret (who has little understanding of the structure of the English leagues) comprehend why this game was so important ? I get that a loss meant further relegation to a lower level but why then would recovery and promotion be so much more difficult ( to the extent that general opinion seems the team would fold completely)?

    • @MKPFave
      @MKPFave 4 роки тому +2

      The 86/87 season was the first year that the bottom club in the 4 tier football league structure would be automatically relegated out of the football league, ( instead of applying for re-selection. It was intended to weed out perennially weaker clubs, of which Burnley wasn't, they just unfortunately, through mismanagement at board and team level at the time in the early 80's, found themselves, in only their second season in the 4th Division, looking at oblivion.) Financially we were broke. There was no money coming in through gate receipts, the quality of football was so poor attendances had dropped dramatically, ( only just over 1500 at one match) With a huge ageing stadium and small crowds, we wouldn't have survived. It was unthinkable that Burnley Football Club, a founder member of the Football league, should go out like this! The town would have been devastated!

    • @VeteranHedonist
      @VeteranHedonist 2 роки тому

      @MKPFave has pretty much said everything. This was before the Premier League started too. Before then we had 4 divisions in the football league, then non league football leagues after that, that aren't counted as the English football league. So division one was what the Premier league is today and division 2 is what the championship is today, then division 1 and 2. Division 2 is what Burnley would of been in, which is the old division 4. It would of been tragic had Burnley been relegated out of the football league. One of the founding members and previous division one champions twice and also the FA Cup, when the FA Cup was massive. It's only really lost it's mythical status since the beginning of the Premier league and the Champions League. I was 11 on this game on the Bee Hole end. (The end that didn't have a roof) I always wanted to go on the longside, but weren't allowed til I was older and rebelled 😁 I just hope we manage to stay in the Premier league this year. It's not looking good, but we never give up. In Dyche we trust. 👌
