How to Filter or lane splitting on motorcycle

- On the way to work this morning I had an opportunity to do some filtering. Here's some things you may need to look out for...

I'm one of the UK's youngest artic drivers (19 today), and as you mentioned we are usually always more aware of what's happening around us than car drivers. We have to be, there's no excuse. We have 6 mirrors on our vehicle, sometimes more and with something that size and weight, power etc you need to be very careful. I always move over as much as I can to let filtering bikers through.
Great riding and great video.
You’re 30 now
12 years later still an amazing an instructional video. Thank you for teaching a new wave of motorcyclists and still hearting comments after 12 years.
I really appreciate all comments. Thanks for sticking with me.
I remember a few months back I was driving on the M6 and there was a heavy traffic jam and we were barely moving and a few bikes were filtering through. I was in the 3rd lane and this bike with two guys came behind on the left of me and I moved over to the right to let them through and the guy on the back waved to say thanks. However the guy in front of me in the BMW 5 Series didn't move over. I saw him tilt his head to look in his nearside mirror and there was no way he couldn't see the bike. He just sat there for a few minutes and blocked the bike from getting through. In the end the van in the second lane was able to move over and the bike got through and was on his way, but before he set off he gave the BMW the wanker sign. It was so funny I was laughing my head off and the guy in the BMW looked in his rear view mirror at me and I just laughed even more. It turned out to be one of my favourite traffic jams!
+Road Warrior Not really. There are lots of good people, unfortunately the bad apples create those stereotypes which ruin it for everybody.
Its an offence in law to hinder someone who is actually in the middle of an overtake as obviously that action creates a greater danger. Is it the same if one was filtering and someone on purpose pulled over to create a stoppage and hinderance.
Love filtering! It's one of the best parts about using a bike in an urban environment. But sooooooo carefully.
You are a fantastic instructor mate, you are 100% to your job
Wow, thanks mate, that's kind of you to say. ☺
Passed DAS a few months back and really appreciating your videos (& the Baron's).
Clear explanations and obviously talking from experience, without being big headed. Thanking you.
I passed my bike test recently with only 2 minor faults and I didn't filter once. I did get a hesitation fault, but that was for waiting too long at a roundabout. Be safe and aware and it's easy :)
Your Sir are a true gentleman on the road, and thank you for sharing what proper riding ethic is about; we need more of this! :)
Thanks for taking the time to make all these videos. I always find them very interesting and informative. Keep up the good work !
Thanks for a great video, I definitely agree it makes a difference saying thank you to people too through traffic.
Nice to see someone polite on UA-cam doing motorcycle vlogs. You sir, have earned another sub. :)
Thankyou for giving good, detailed advice for motorcyclists. I am not the most confident bike rider, and these vids help greatly. Thanks again.
Great advice and loved your composure. I live in the south of Oz so we do get a fair bit of rain at times. I just bought an SV650s 2000 model after not riding for about 7-8 years. The last bike I had was a suzuki GR650 87 model and I learned on that. I was always very gittery about riding in the wet and avoided it when I could. This new bike I decided to "face the fear" yesterday and ride in the wet and do everything you're supposed to do. It turned out fine but I do have to work on my turning because I am tensing up still too much when it's wet. Observing ahead and relaxing on the bike are really important and you enjoy it that much better as well...Thanks
Excellent tips, love your videos, if only ever road user was as considerate as you, the world would be a much nicer place to live.
Your videos are fab! I passed my test yesterday so every new bit of info is welcome 😊
Awesome, well done and thanks. Stay tuned, I've other ideas in the pipeline. ☺
Dude - Your vids are amazing. Got my Mod 2 test on Monday. Im doing it myself onmy 125 and through the help of your videos.
Excellent! I'm always aware when gaps appear in one lane, the possibility of another vehicle in the other lane cutting across. Many car drivers are not even aware we are there! Giving a polite wave when safe, always diffuses potential aggression! A courteous motorcyclist helps to avoid stereotypes!
we have a true rider here good vids its nice to see some one not going insane speeds while lane splitting keep up the good work :P
I'm enjoying your vids because you cover topics that others seem to miss. Thanks. I'm trying to train myself not to take my hand off to say thanks in case i need the brake at that moment and will nod my head to the side or something instead.
Good vid.
It's nice to see someone who's aware on the movements of lorries on our roads, as they do have a lot of blind spots and need to use the road in a different manner to regular vehicles.
It's all common sense really.
Excellent video, well done.
Good commentary of what you are looking at and also looking for.
@RoadcraftNottingham Just wanted to take the opportunity to say what a cracking little video this is. As someone who commutes everyday on a bike it was great to hear and see someone else be calm, courteous and considerate as they make progress through traffic.
As a side note, I sometimes give a quick little 1 or 2 flashes of the hazards if I can't take my hand off the bars at that moment in time - if every biker was polite I bet there would be a lot more car drivers willing to move over!
Please show this to as many Americans as possible, i'm getting sick of them all saying im a maniac cause i filter..
Great vid.
great vid, good tips, i used to go as fast as i could filtering but ive calmed right down now, it was the adrenaline rush
I'm glad you pointed out how much the fine is in the video!
A great video and one i have clicked on more than once! and again you show that being safe can be very cool .many thanks ,stay safe.
You're a good teacher. Hope my CBT trainers are as knowledgeable
Great video. This is very useful for beginners like me. It also got rid of many doubts I have had about filtering :)
Nice one.
nice video Russ ... And you absolutely right , most drivers are on it, especially lorries and bus drivers, obviously exceptions to every rule and still have to be careful and always assume the worse
good points made
and i like the idea of using the mirrors to see what the driver is doing
:)
What a really nice video, very imformative - well done and thanks!.
another good rule for this, don't try to slip into tiny gaps, and don't think you can beat the clock before the gap closes.
Great Vid.
Passed my test about 6 weeks ago. Didn't have the need for filtering on my test and my Instructor before hand told me not to bother. He called it "shaving" though.
Your videos are fantastic! Thank you so much , keep them coming please :)
A good instructional video...nicely done!
I certainly have, slowed my filtering right down to a safer speed because of it...thumbs up!
Woah...you guys have some courteous drivers over there. I'm a little jealous now.
Your an exellent driver, very clever and very kind, thank you good sir
great video man,,you are a very good rider..
Excellent video. I subscribe to a couple of Motorbicycling related channels, but I feel yours shades it for me due to your concentrating on City Riding, which is a particular source of blood, sweat n tears for me. Whilst nice swift well ridden spins through the counytryside bring great joy to us all,the reality is of the constant daily battle we all wage against the ability of humans to be just plain stupid !!
hi, just subscribed with you :-) in this vid im still amazed how many drivers are still in the cars sitting in traffic, i think i lost count how many cars ect. you passed to how many bikes filtered through.. Just done my Mod one after 2nd attempt, 1st one went over the line on the U turn by 2cm ouch! and been watching all your vlogs and gaining some handy tips for my Mod2 when i get the date. cheeRS
Just finished watching it, lol. Awesome video(s).
I was out today practising in some heavy traffic and said exactly the same as yourself with regards to other drivers. Many, if not most, pulled over slightly to let me through and I acknowledged this with a small hand wave. Also at traffic lights where peeps may think you've pushed in.
Rule 160 clearly states that you should be aware of bikes (push and motor) filtering through traffic. So we are following the rules, it just so happens that the rules allow bikes to do more.
Think of this though, if bikes weren't filtering that traffic jam would be worse, so not only is it safer for the bike it also makes the traffic jam smaller.

Thanks for the video...
It was very helpful..:)
Thank you for your explanation, sir. I find your vudeos inspiring and they make me want to ride a motorcycle like you do it.
I also wonder, what makes people to give a 'thumb down' for this type of videos? Seriously, cannot understand their mindset.
Thanks for your kind words. Unfortunately there are some not nice people in this world.
Excellent video, thank you!
Great video, amazing tip. And i will visit your shop soon! :)
Love it! More advise for filtering. One thing that will never go down badly. Thank you =]
A genuinely chivalrous rider, and for that I commend you....
Great video and great riding - you are a master at this. I notice that you keep to a speed that is reasonably close to the speed of traffic. In other words, you don't hammer through at high speeds but instead choose a speed that gives you time to react and gives you stability.
Yesterday i filtered for first time ( during motorcycle lesson) did it on own initiative. Its alot of fun even moreso than i tought :).
I was carefull where ever there are gaps to slow down a bit more
but you can make some decent time when everything is standing still.
Thanks for the nice feedback, means a lot. Cheers. :-)
I'm a motorcyclist and I like your videos. Just a note on honking on people using the phone: I know it's illegal and dangerous, but honking doesn't stop them doing it. According to the traffic rules (at least in Czech Rep. where I come from) you can use your horn ONLY to avoid a SERIOUS danger - not for greeting people or "swearing". Also, when I'd use the horn anytime I see someone talking on the phone or writting a text message, I wouldn't be doing anything else in Prague's traffic :)
@dlinquencious Yeah, a wave definately helps "relations" with cagers. We sometimes overlook the 1000s of decent drivers out there each day because they simply do it right and don't get in our way. Thanks for commenting (and subbing) :-)
I'm with you on the phone users mate. Driving includes being stopped at a traffic sign/light or at any time when not pulled over to one side off the road. If they are not off the road they should not be using phones. Keep up the good work!
excellent video ,, well done , your a good rider
Excellent. you still beat all the cars but get there even safer now. Cheers
Good vid mate. I'm back in the saddle after 35yrs, so need all the advise I can get
Wow, there's some odd commenting here by haters.
These are well done clips by someone who obviously knows how to ride.
Good work mate, you've got another sub.
fantastic video, thank you so much :)
I am constantly aware of other road users when driving my car. I'm much like you in a sense commentating in my head on whats happening around me, what the road conditions are like and I ask myself, what can I do to improve the situation; reduce speed, move into another position to open up gaps and so on. I want to learn to drive a bike and get my licence in 2013 and continue to drive responsibly. My rationing is that there are enough idiots on the road without me adding to them. ~ Jason, Ireland
Much appreciated this video! Whilst I'm a road tax dodging push bike user, there are lots of skills here common to powered and umpowered two wheelers.
Currently I've got my cbt (about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on!) And it's improved my cycling no end.
Onwards to das next!
So..? Did you go through with your DAS?
As a car driver it's made me more aware of bikes. It is hard at times to see due to HUGE blind spots! I have a new shape beetle and constantly check my mirrors now!
Thanks. ☺
great video. Have u any videos on advice on buying a bike
good video man, as the son of an HGV driver I've had it put to me that HGV drivers are some of the best (obviously there are going to be some that are pants but moving on) simply because they need to be otherwise they could cause serious harm to another far more easily that say a car and have to be far more aware of the blind spots and what the rest of the unit is doing. I always give them space, the need it.
That's great, will go some way to repairing the bad image some drivers have of motorcyclists.
Very nice.
Even in the UK, many drivers don't like bikes doing this. This is why you always see me being slow and thanking people, helps make up for the aggressive, fast filterers who p*ss them off.
hey :) ive just started riding... been on the road 2 weeks and found your videos very helpful! btw your voice isnt boring lol 1 question.. when filtering do you get nervous? or were your nervous the first time you did it?
Sometimes I get so irritated when I get honked at or squeezed out during splitting that I forget there are cool people out there who actually scoot over. Thanks for pointing that out and I'll be sure to remember to give the cool cagers a thanks wave. *_~
Great vid
Great video! Just goes to show that common sense and courtesy go along way. Mines a gsxr1000!!
Nice job
I think this video is a very good example of how to lane split. I just looked it up for Sweden. It doesnt seem to be regulated in the law but they have suggestions on how to do it so its not necessarily illegal. It's just as RoadcraftNottingham explains it -It depends on how you do it.
Keep your speed under 10km/h faster than the vehicle you're passing. Keep your distance. Don't zick-zack lanes. If changing lanes use indicator. Try to stay in same lane or on the line between the lanes.
In Austria, it's legal to pass stationary or very slow traffic in front of red lights or similar situations. Still, there are sometimes people using every centimeter of space to the car in front of them they got to cut me off or nearly hit me when I do so. Either they don't know about this law or they hate it that I may move and they don't...
thanks for the reply mate, just googled it, nice looking bike! i thought it was a gold wing.
Great video.
Re thanking drivers, I like to do this too as you do with a hand gesture.
But I do get concerned that one day I'll do it and need to brake suddenly and be delayed in doing so as my hand is off the front brake lever
It's just a case of planning ahead and making sure it's safe before doing it.
Hello, have you made a video on cornering tips? Thanks.
Good info. I don't filter right to the give-way line, because lanes convey information about your intended route, so I prefer to choose the correct lane a few vehicles from the junction and wait my turn. It temporarily shortens stopping distance as I slot in to the traffic but I leave a gap in front as we move. More of an issue as I'm on a small bike so can't always out-accelerate traffic off the mark, but I also dislike bikers doing it when I'm in my car. Setting off, nice to have more space.
Good on ya.
Cool video. In the UK, you're supposed to look around and do mirror checks before setting off. Unfortunately, almost nobody does as they are focused on the lights or traffic they are giving way to. As soon as they get the chance, they just move off. This (IMHO) is the main reason not to pass the front vehicle at lights or a roundabout. They won't notice you and you could end up in significant danger.
After re-reading this, I think you mean it may mean crossing the solid white line at the lights, in which you are totally correct. A lot of bikers do cross this line (slightly) to get just in front of the car. Thanks for your coment.
Filtering in the uk on a motorcycle is legal but only when other traffic is stationary or traveling at slow speeds. It needs a fair bit of motorcycle control and riding skill to do it safely. The biggest risk is that some road users are not observant when making lane changes. Some bikers don't seem to appreciate the risks either.
Special Android the risks are why I don't do it very much! I also don't bother forcing myself to squeeze through tiny gaps between vehicles. Sometimes it's better just sit through the traffic and be safe than take the risk.
Filtering is safer for me ex dr of 12 yrs but them idiots will still turn wheel quickly to scare you while sitting in jams ... Every night lowdham
Nice outlook. :-)
A couple of points I will most certainly take from this is to make eye contact with lorry/van drivers through their mirrors and say thanks irrespective off wether the drive assists you or not.
What speeds will you filter up to? How much faster than the traffic will you go? I've heard IAM state the 20:20 rule; traffic no more than 20 and you no more than 20 above the traffic speed. Personally I find limiting filtering to traffic speeds under 20MPH a little limiting (dual carriageway filtering, not single road facing oncoming vehicles, where I would go for a 20:10 rule) so will filter up to traffic speeds of 40MPH but tend to keep my relative speed much lower at around 5MPH.
agreed, seconded & subscribed :)
I'll be basing my riding style on this fellas there's no doubt about that!
ok great video, really useful tips, but just to make sure, can you do this on your test?
I like your vids dude, do you enjoy being a motorcycle instructor?
@johnmullen11 That's a shame. It takes a lot of concentration to do it right and not relying on the car drivers to get out of your way. There are a lot of "filtering" uploads in the UK that are a good argument for getting it banned here too, they're wayyyy to fast and relying on luck. Thanks for your comment.
I love riding but absolutly hate filtering....when i first started riding i still had "invincable syndrome" and filtered down the A38 (between lanes 1 & 2 of 2) and was doing seriously STUPID speeds (50mph with stationary traffic in both lanes). Scared me to a point I hate it now. You were going through gaps I'd never go for on my kiwi ZR7, purley because i'm always concerned about clipping a wing mirror. Did a bit on friday for the bikeshow though on the M6 (between L3 & 4) which made me happy
Just a quick question. when filtering like this would put your high beams on to get get noticed by other drivers?
Thanks for the vids
@omega19s Just checked, it was on private for some reason. It should be back on now, let me know if it is. Cheers
Very kind of you to say. Thanks for subbing too :-)
@thatmanfromyorkshire Excellent point tmfy, it's bad enough car drivers mis-judging 12 feet, I suppose it makes a world of difference in a large vehicle!
Thanks :-)
It is interesting to learn that this is legal in some countries; I wasn't aware of that. In Australia there is a specific law against "splitting lanes" as it is known here - it is never allowed at any speed, under any circumstances. There is also a law against "overtaking on the left" instead of using the right lane, or the other side of the road if there is only one lane in each direction. Is that what is meant my undertaking (as opposed to overtaking)? I haven't heard that term before.
Filtering becomes undertaking at higher speeds. It can be a grey area but as long as you're slow and safe, you're ok
