Thanks for watching everyone! Quick question for you - Would you rather see a Walmart Extreme Grocery Budget Challenge next month OR a $20 Walmart Thanksgiving? Let me know!!
Well done, you are helping people that are struggling at this moment, we like to say thankyou! You are very pleasant to watch and getting better with every video!
I think a $20 thanksgiving would be fun to watch. But, I really enjoy extreme budget challenges as well. I’d watch either. What would be really neat, (but maybe too much work for one video) would be a thanksgiving, and then repurposing the leftovers to get you through the next few days with only adding a few more ingredients! 😁
Girl, you got Lentils, potatoes and split peas! And tons of vegs... that is seriously THE BEST low budget grocery haul I'VE seen Ever. And you got vitamin and nutrient powerhouses in there. That is fantastic!!
@@MealsWithMaria frozen produce is actually more nutritious than fresh, this is because the nutrients are frozen in time, while fresh produce begins dying the moment it is cut and shipped. The nutrients start to die off during the shipping time, so don’t feel bad about frozen veggies. A lot of us vegans use frozen!
Adding a little mustard powder or English/French mustard to anything with cheese accentuates the cheese flavour meaning you can use less cheese and still get the flavour
I had a child (he’s now 51) that was highly allergic to milk, chocolate and artificial colors. It was so hard in the 70’s to find items he could have. Now is so much better. Anyway I breast fed him as long as I possibly could comfortably then had to experiment with what he could drink ended up being soybean milk. I understand what you are going through. Many prayers for you to find the right foods for him and your family. 🙏🏼
These videos are great! I remember the days of having $3 to feed a family of 7. It felt impossible. I hope they help those who need it. No one deserves to have to scrounge money and coins up. We all deserve to be able to eat, and feed our families properly without worry.
We have a blessing box ( non working glass front refrigerator) in our little community that sits outside of a small church. You contribute whatever you can, or take whatever you need. We moved here from the city and I couldn’t imagine something like this until I actually saw it. I’m grateful to be on the giving side. For almost 10 years we lived below the poverty line. We never accepted government welfare, but we missed a lot of meals. It’s hard for children to understand because their friends have so much. It can cause a lot of bitterness in children or it can strengthen them depending on how you are with them.
@@jaydahome-teillarddeyry6200 every one can fall on hard times. I knew a family that was very well off. Then the father lost his job and they were just living off the mother's part time job. They had emergency savings so they were ok for a while but they eventually needed help. There is nothing wrong with needing help.
This is one of the best challenges I have seen. Lentils are a great item when you are on a budget. I like to make taco seasoned lentils and put them on a tostada or a taco. They are a great substitute for hamburger/ground meat. Those bouillon cubes come in handy. They are a great soup starter or to add flavor to a dish. I like adding one to my rice water for white or brown rice. It give the rice a really good flavor. Thanks for sharing this video.
I’ve seen parents give worse food. You are amazing. Here in New York they fed kids 3 times a day in schools cause they let likes go hungry. “ no kid hungry” charity on practically every show. You do great so don’t brow beat yourself.
I love this type of video. It’s awesome you did dollar tree because not everyone has access to a standard grocery store nearby (especially if they don’t/can’t drive) but they might have a dollar tree type store
I don't have a dollar store or a Wal-Mart or an Aldi ..all I have is my local grocery store and as you can imagine prices are high because they know we need the food..closest dollar store is 50 miles away and closest Wal-Mart is also 50 miles away. But I love how you make good meals very inexpensively.
My compliments to you Marie! Your meals were wholesome, nutritious and plentiful. By far the best extreme grocery budget challenge I’ve seen so far. Well done!
I grew up with traditional shepherd's pie with ground beef. I made the switch to lentils and it is an absolute favorite! My daughter thought that is just the way you make it and she loves it. :)
Man this was awesome. Love the Shepard’s pie idea with lentils & mashed potato soup. Both I want to try for meatless Mondays. Such a great job thinking outside the box!!! 😀
I would love to see a $20 thanksgiving! But def do a Walmart one and show us what is possible with leftovers that would be neat. I loved this video it was realistic and I feel that you were able to eat enough.
You were able to get alot for $20 ! Good for you ! Most of these challenges rely on pasta and rice dishes for several meals - you added a variety which is great Thank you
I'm happy to see you're monetized for your videos. I'll be watching the ads. You work so hard to bring these to us. One way I've used to season potato soup is cream of chicken soup. I know it's not healthy but it's so good and definitely a comfort food. Nice video, Maria. You always give me good ideas for meals.
HI 👋 Maria...you can always make Italian style lentil soup by adding spinach. Also, pasta salad with canned veggies and broccoli cheese rice, white rice w butter and cheese which u can do w a rice cooker or on a stove... have a wonderful day 💞✨
Great job using a limited budget. I think using basics that you have at home is ok. Realistically if someone only has $20 for food, they are going to use everything they have at home to get through.
I grew up on lentils my mom would throw some bacon and cilantro garlic and salt and on the side some eggs w some homemade salsa verde or red . Tfs I'll be definitely trying some recipes 🥰
When you said you were going to make lentil shepherds pie I thought, that sounds crazy! You have to have lamb or beef for that. It really looked good and I think the brown gravy just topped the dish offers! I'm going to make it!! Thanks a lot. Great job on all of it!!
There are a lot of different vegetables that you can get very cheaply; the issue is not everyone has access to a grocery store or a way to transport many pounds of vegetables or storage. But if possible, I absolutely recommend fresh potatoes, onions, and carrots; they are all affordable and store for a good chunk of time.
You did awesome! I like to get jam or jelly. More versatile then syrup IMO. But that's just what I do. It definitely helps that your kids don't mind eating the waffles plain!
This is such a much needed video! Many people need to see that it’s totally doable and they need specific ideas in order to move forward. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and inspiring others to think outside of the typical mindset. Just the knowledge to check the websites of the foods to get ideas is invaluable!!
I would love to see you make a video using the ingredients you typically would get from the food bank. I myself have had to go to the food bank a few times and get creative for a family of 3 and would love to see what you would come up with.
These videos are amazing especially in 2020! Just discovered your videos the other day and I’m so excited to save SO much money next year🙂 also your recipes look sooo delish. Love this channel!
A new subscriber here. nice to meet you! 🦋What a great job! Good video full of information! 😍I’m a nurse and I also volunteer at a Battered Woman’s shelter too. Great ideas from you. 🎉🙏🏼😊
I love these videos. We have Dollar Tree in Canada but no fridge or freezer section. Just dry and canned goods which tend to be over-priced (typically bulk and generic grocery brands are cheaper). What I often buy at Dollar Tree are spices. Lately they’ve had organic spices. Awesome. 👍❤️🥰
I really enjoyed this. I love how you used the ideas from the website. Definitely want to try the quick broccoli potato soup with instant potatoes I got free with a shopping app.
Great video! Loved the creativity and love seeing this type of content that makes sure veggies play a prominent role in the meal plan! For your leftover lentils... I would say that you could easily combine with some beans to make a nice tacon filling that would feed 4. You could also use them to stretch your ground meat in a recipe.
Thank you so much! 😅 I try so hard to get as many veggies as possible!! I love the idea of using the extra lentils with beans or meat in a taco. I always forget how much you can stretch 1lb of ground beef when you add beans to it!
Really enjoying these videos and appreciate you letting us know how many servings each thing makes and the feedback of what your family likes. Thanks for putting in all the time and effort! Subscribed!! 💕🙏🏼💕🙏🏼
This has to be amazing. I can’t feed 2 people with $20 let alone 4 🤣🤣🤣. My husband messed everything up because he is so picky and I’m not. I pretty much each anything except for meat I have never touched but anything else, I’m up for.
Love re-visiting some of your older videos. Prices have changed, but the standard items still considered a good value have remained the same, so these videos are still invaluable. I know the applesauce is a great fruit addition, but I love peanut butter as a breakfast item and often add it to my oatmeal and pancakes. I'd also enjoy PB on the saltines as a snack.
If you have a thrift store or goodwill near you, there are usually slow cookers/crock pots available for a modest amount. Not an option for everyone, but a great investment if you can swing it.
I like your comment about the husband not even realizing it was dollar tree food. My sister was floored when I told her I get food at dollar tree (not all of my food mind you but some things there are a good price like beans, and pretzels)
Wow! First time here.👍 Sooooo interesting and thanks for the Pea Soup...wanna try it for sure! Tnx again. My dollar stores really never have bread but when they do I purchase some and I'm going to look for the bullion cubes.
@@MealsWithMaria After I saw your video I went to a dollar tree, ugh! No bulion cubes, gravy pkt, or the bag of split peas! I will go to a different dollar tree sometime this week. 😊
I think you did well. The choices aren't always available at Dollar Tree. Walmart may have had prices that are a little lower, which might allow for an extra item or two. Well done, tfs ❄️☃️🏜️💗❄️☃️🏜️💗❄️☃️🏜️💗
I love dipping waffles and pancakes in applesauce. But I am totally a non syrup girl mostly. Cold waffles or pancakes straight out of the fridge are the best snack
Wow! This is amazing. You did great! I'm a little on the jealous side.. we have so many severe food allergies that eating on a budget is difficult.. but not impossible!
There is a ham bouillon out there that is good with split pea soup. Rotini is one of the pastas you use when you have a lot of sauce/gravy. It gets in the spirals so, that is another reason it was a bit dry. Had it been a penne or egg noodles it would have likely been more 'wet'. Good planning there.
Well done! I think this was my favourite budget food challenge yet that you've done, really liked the meal ideas that you came up with, such wholesome and filling dinners and lunches and very impressive to be able to have a variety too, usually that's near impossible on a lower budget! :) Great ideas for breakfasts too, makes me want to get a waffle maker now! :) Was curious how the lentils turned out this time. were they softer than the last time? I know before they'd turned out a bit crunchy and you had trouble softening them so was concerned when I saw you put salt into the pot, always salt the lentils at the end and they'll cook much more easily and soften quicker too. I would prefer to see a Walmart Extreme challenge over Thanksgiving, partly because I'd rather watch a whole weeks worth of meals but also because I am from Australia so Thanksgiving isn't celebrated here so it's not something I'm as familiar with. Thanks :)
Thank you!! The lentils turned out great! I’m definitely confused about the salt thing because so many recipes say to salt first! I just need to go with my gut and salt after next time 😂 but like I said, they were still really good. Thank you for voting! It really helps to see what everyone wants to see!
@@MealsWithMaria I find that odd too, I've never seen that myself, anytime I've seen a recipe with lentils they always make a point to say not to add salt until after they've cooked. I guess it's the same as when you cook dry beans from scratch and you don't add salt to the pot for that either. Probably I would say try it without one time to see if you prefer the difference, I just find that they cook more evenly and soften better that way. If you haven't done so already try making a bolognese with lentils, really good! :) Also, happy to vote, glad to help and glad to have some input. :)
Add some of the Apple sauce into the waffle/pancake mix. (In the batter before cooking) (A nuttspread or jam or honey or syrup is great over or in them too. Just about any fruit too)

Love the idea of the cold milk on top to cool it down and add flavor 🙌
Wow that soup looks amazing! Nicely done w/looking up a recipe on the website! Great reminder 😎👍🏻
Thank you! The website is something I always forget! I find the recipes created by the company are often really good😊
Wow! This is amazing. You did great! I'm a little on the jealous side.. we have so many severe food allergies that eating on a budget is difficult.. but not impossible!
Thank you! I can imagine that is tough! You’re a rockstar!
Great budget planning!
I love your kitchen, it's super cute
Aw thanks! There were a lot of issues with it unfortunately so it’s getting re-done! Can’t wait to reveal the new one!
Wow! Great job. Really impressive plan.
Thank you!
Thank you for the info! I’d have loved to get some ham bouillon!
Sometimes when I have croutons left over from salads I ad them to soups. Cheese it's are really good to.
Ohhh yum!! I want to try the Cheese it’s😂
Your channel is growing fast

Hi, love what you get . Here in Canada we don't have any meats or frozen veg.
Ah yes, all Dollar Trees are a little different. I plan to do a challenge in the new year at a Dollar Tree with no fridge/freezer. So stay tuned!
Lentils are a good sub for meat in a lot of dishes. It works great as "ground beef" for mexican dishes like tacos or burritos.
Yes! I’ve done the tacos before 🙌 delish!
Was curious how the lentils turned out this time. were they softer than the last time?
Also, happy to vote, glad to help and glad to have some input. :)
Hey... really liked the potato soup recipe
Add some of the Apple sauce into the waffle/pancake mix. (In the batter before cooking)
(A nuttspread or jam or honey or syrup is great over or in them too. Just about any fruit too)
Yes! I need to try this! Sounds incredible 😊
