  • Hey y'all! This is my take on an emergency grocery budget. $20 feeds my family of 5 breakfast, lunch, and dinner for 4 days! I hope this inspires you and helps! Remember if you and your family are facing food insecurity, ask for help from your local churches, food banks, or family and friends! No one should go hungry! By the way! There is 30 second-ish section with no sound. This was done purposely. Lol

I'm in Northwest Florida and I've watched a few of your budget shopping videos. Even though the prices here are higher on a lot of the items you get and I only have a Walmart to go to for the lowest prices in my small town, today, this list would be around $25, $26 (I checked the prices). I still consider that very inexpensive for what you can do with it. Thank you for sharing.

When we were young there we're times when we went to bed without food,, so this really touched me. I wish my mom couldve seen this back then. I really enjoyed this video because you have people who are struggling in silence because they don't want to be ostracized for being unable to feed their kids. This will help a lot of people who would probably otherwise worry themselves to death because they are in a situation and don't know how to get through it. Thanks for taking the time out to share this with the world. Keep the videos coming.

I also lost my husband a year and a half ago. No help from their mother my daughter MIA father also MIA I have them legally. I have had to learn how to survive on my own with these babies and no I do not get government help nor child support my home is paid for but I have had to learn to go back to my roots again and learn all over. When I was a child we had beans sometimes 3 to 4 days a week. Sometimes we put fried taters with them, another day salmon patties, sometimes sauerkraut and kielbasa or wieners. Then maybe turn them into chili beans or refried beans. Back then chicken was the cheapest meat so we had fried chicken often or chicken and dumplins. I cant remember not enjoying a single meal we had. Mom was a super great cook, she could have made a shoe sole taste amazing. Blessings to all.

You did good, girl! Just a tip for anyone looking to fill bellies on a budget, if you add just a little PB or cream cheese with your banana toast, it will keep you full for longer because of the fat and protein.
Cabbage and rice are also good, cheap meal stretchers. If you have any leftover meat, add it to a pan of shredded cabbage with some soy sauce, cook and serve it over rice. Cabbage, potatoes, and hot dogs (smoked sausage if you can get it cheap) makes a great one pan dinner. Rice with milk, butter, and sugar (cinnamon and raisins if you've got them) makes a delicious, CHEAP breakfast. Leftover rice with a bag of frozen vegetables and soy sauce makes "good enough" fried rice. 😉

I am very very proud of you and you did excellent! 40 years ago, I was a single parent of one working full-time and paying daycare so we were always in a very tight situation. I had to send this video to my son to see how much he remembered, LOL. Instead of bananas we always picked up a large bag of oranges, and yes 40 years ago you could buy four boxes of generic mac and cheese for a dollar. We had potatoes made Every Which Way but Loose with every dinner and a lot of times with lunch. Oh my the hot dogs. Some would be surprised what you can do with the hot dog. We did always have milk or tea which I made by the gallon. I would buy a dozen eggs and hard-boil them all oh, that was a good snack for grab-and-go. We got by and my son was a very healthy child and I don't even remember him getting a cold. Now he is raising two daughters and remembers everything I taught him. We never went hungry and we worked hard for our money but he was aware that there is no shame if you need to ask for help. We basically just used our creative minds and we always got by. I am so happy to see your video and I just think that you did wonderfully for your family of five. Love sent from Grandma Gia in the Ozarks

@@SouthernFrugalMomma you're so sweet honestly. I was just speaking truthfully from the heart. See the recent crazy inflation has me scouring the whole UA-cam universe for ideas and tips and tricks about feeding a family on a budget. But tbh before I found you I was honestly getting so frustrated with seeing so many people doing budget videos that are amazing no doubt but its just truly not usually anything that my family would actually find acceptable for a meal. Not that there's anything at all wrong with these types of videos and in fact im so thankful that they are available to people who need them but they just aren't realistic for me and my family. So I'd watch like 10 videos and come away with maybe 6 actual realistic recipes that I knew i could actually serve to my family and not end up with my hubby just sneaking off to sheetz for take out which basically defeats the entire purpose. 😂 So I was almost ready to just give up and assume that its just impossible and so i may as well just give in to the fact that we're just going to have to somehow create more income so finding your videos was really just so amazing for us, an absolute blessing. Thanks again for being awesome and please never stop just being you and doing/showing us what works for you because some of us really need it more than you realize. ❤❤❤

I remember eating beans and a piece of toasty bread, and loving it. My mom would make baked macaroni with one pkg of elbows, a can of cheddar cheese soup, and a can of tomato soup. It would fill a baking pan and was so delicious, and like you said, filled our tummies and no one went to bed hungry. She would make sliced hot dogs in the frying pan, and then scramble eggs into for dinner. She would take crushed cornflakes, cover whole hot dogs in ketchup, and then roll them in the crumbs to coat, then bake them…they were crunchy and juicy, and no rolls necessary!.I’ve fallen back of many of the things I ate when my parents were struggling, and my own kids loved them…to me they are true comfort meals. I’m 60, and never ever remembering being hungry…a little creativity can fill bellies.

@SouthernFrugalMomma I want to commend you for what you do for people here on your channel. It's so needed. In the US we often get things confused between what we actually need, and what we've been conditioned to THINK we need. We frequently buy too much food, we're the most wasteful nation in terms of food that gets purchased, but thrown out, our refrigerators are huge, so fill them up, then throw away (this, of course, isn't everybody, but it's true of way too many). And we eat too much. What you do here...low cost, reasonable portions, healthy appetites (instead of excessive appetites), and it tastes good. In college (paid for with grants, loans, and PT jobs), I had a $30.00 a month budget (that was in the 90s). Now, I can spend more for groceries, but I like to spend what is necessary, not what is possible, so I track prices and set limits. In 2022, I can do a monthly grocery budget of $50.00. The trick is to be willing to cook most things from scratch. Learning to garden helps, too (I "container" garden). The time it takes to do this is made up for by not having to work 2-3 jobs to afford food. It's possible to do more with less is all I'm saying. We mustn't keep believing the hype about how we have to live to prove we're "successful". "Prove" to whom? Successful by whose definition? Anyway, THANKS for what you do. You, and your family are wonderful!

I loved your video. I have 5 kids myself so for me the end was my favorite when the kids said their favorites. I've been blessed not to be down to a 20$ budget for four days but we are trying to spend way less to pay off debt and just be smarter financially now that me and my husband are in our thirties looking back at all of the money we wasted the past 7 years of our marriage. I love videos like this because it's not fake in appearance, just real life trying to show viewers how to make ends meet and help them save money. Not you need to buy this or you need organic that. Just real life actually helpful tips. Alot of UA-cam moms overdo their videos in a way that makes people feel guilty for not giving their kids some outrageous expensive meals but at the end of the day you remind me of simpler times when my mom was raising me and my siblings and the focus was more on just making sure you could keep your kids fed to get by. Yes healthy meals are important to all parents but there's a clear point where some people just over do it because of their A. Entitlement B. Fear of judgement or C. Lack of self confidence and fear of judgement. I think you do a great job of keeping true to yourself and will be subscribing and watching more.

Anyway, all it is, is cooked elbow macaroni, a pound of breakfast sausage, cooked (we use the hot, but use any flavor your like) or smoke sausage, sliced and a can of tomatoes. Toss together and serve with cooked cornbread. We like to use the fire roasted tomatoes. This is a recipe that anyone can change to their liking.

Im a new sub. I started getting a little stressed because I became sick and missed a week of work. I don't get assistance or help. So my check was only $72. I had to put gas in my vehicle but my kitchen was bare. I could care less if I eat but my son is gonna be feed 3 meals no matter what. My husband is going to be feed at least once a day. They are my everything. These videos help tremendously. There was even a worse time when the pandemic hit and I wasn't working at all, I had gone into a store, 711 to be exact. I asked the manager if he could give my son a slice of pizza. I told him it didn't have to be fresh. It could even be something they were gonna throw out. He laughed and said no. I left there crying. 2 weeks later I found out that manager got fired plus they were gonna shut down that particular store at the end of the month. Look, you never know what a person is going thru. It pays to be kind. You bless someone, you eventually will be blessed. So I never really ask anyone for help because of how I was treated, but I learned to rely on God and doing my homework. I looked up cheap or budget meals and at least my family is feed. Keep making these videos because you never know who you are helping. I just happened to be one of those people.

I live in Canada, our prices are much higher... For Instance those cheese slices would be at least 3.00, that 5 lb bag of potatoes...5 something for those...Hot dogs are at least 5-6$ Just a rough idea

“As Americans we are spoilt…” Not just in the US Brooke. I think the western world in general has been spoilt for many years and now they’re all panicking because they’re not used to having to think, plan, and actually cook rather than eat out or order in. Well done, you, for caring for your family and showing the world how to get through the tough times. Our fave ‘poor man’s meal’ is pasta with pasta sauce and a sliced smoked hot dog per person thrown in. Add a little paprika to the sauce, or garlic powder if you have it. A little shredded cheese on top is a bonus.
