Well, just finished this episode, right after the one from last week. That was the first time in a long time I was late, and only because of the motivation Nick gave to buy a smaller, more manageable boat now instead of waiting for 'The Dreamyacht', the first of which I sailed for the last 9 days to her new homeport. Point of it all is: You're not only changing your lives around, but also motivate other people to work on changing theirs too, mine included (and are most probably letting numerous others forget about this crazy world for 20 minutes a week).
So, it sure is bittersweet to leave a great home, but you're both on to a continued and even bigger adventure. I wish you all the best and will keep on cheering you on while making my own sailing adventures (Cheers Nick, you're mostly to blame and are, together with Terysa, a true inspiration;))!
    Have a good one!
    Gerrit

@@sailingrubyrose Thank you guys, I do appreciate that! But I couldn't argue with Nick's logic, so steps were (mostly) swiftly taken. I won't be sailing the Pacific on her, but if I see you on the AIS (or you find yourself around The Netherlands at some point), you should come and try to drown that ulcer into submission with some Dutch beer;)

@@onyva3256 Haha, well thank you! But how could you say no to such logic and excellent motivation?! Most of the time Nick is spot on (also in his Technical Tuesdays). It's not always easy to take such a step, but right now i'm getting into a world of adventures (really, 'doing it') of which i've only dreamt about up until a week ago. Nick's seems to be a great, level-headed guy who went through the same process quite a while ago. So not really anything that could go t*ts up there and a great rolemodel in that respect!

Hi guy's, another great story. You and Sailing Uma, RAN Sailing, Captain Q, Odd Life Crafting, Sailing Yaba, Expedition Evans and Sailing The Far Side has inspired an old sailer to take up sailing again. I just bought a nice 35 old 33 foot sailing boat and will start setting her up for some local cruising in the wonderful Danish Archipelago. Just a huge thanks from here and best of luck with Ruby Rose 2.

You’ve just made me remember scuba diving the Alderney Race. It was like what I imagine to being in the spin cycle. I had to physically hold the regulator in place from the turbulence. I did it once, discovered Adrenaline was brown and my dive buddy & I have memories to last a lifetime. Thank you for the show, good luck with RR2 & don’t be sad parting with RR, she did you proud.

Just a quick story. Several decades ago, working for "Red Stack Tugs" in the S.F. Bay Area, the tug that my captain and I normally worked on had a shift with a new hire engineer. He used fuel from a tank that we normally never used (this was an old YTB) and contaminated the operational fuel system with the bacteria. The boat stopped and when we were "ameliorating "(thanks for the adjective) the situation, I can still see clearly, Harold, just pouring in biobor , from a 5 gal. can, straight into the sounding tube of the port, for'd tank. I told him that it was too much. He looked up and said, "chief, if a little is good, more is better." There was a lot of filter changing, but we eventually got the situation straightened out. I'm glad to be retired, but I do miss Harold and some of the challenges of being a marine engineer.

To Ruby Rose, Thank you for such magical times as you sailed around the world with Nick and Terysa as your crew, I'll be sorry to see you leave them but I'm very excited to meet your younger sister Ruby Rose II. You have given us so much joy and pleasure with your adventures that it is hard for us to see you sail away with new crew, I'm sure you'll look after them with the same gusto as you did Nick and Terysa. As for your younger sister I hope you advised her of Nicks Sense of humour and all that he says is mainly just fun and tongue in cheek as for Terysa I hope you told her that she is possibly the kindest and gentlest crew a boat could wish for. I hope your new crew treat you and keep you in the custom to which you deserve. Stay Safe & Fair Winds !!!

I always go east about rather than west about as many times people turn back at corbiere due to the strong tides and nw wind colliding. Usually leave 3 hours before to get the float all the way to Aldeney, then use the back eddy to get through the race.
We live in St John’s and enjoy the scrabble down to the beach.
Wise decision to turn back. We went in a force 7 at night once just put autopilot on and put on a scopoderm patch went to talk to the great white telephone for an hour then was fine.

It must be interesting for you both to see the episode that we are now all watching and reflecting on your penultimate sail - having been here for a couple of months. It’s sad for us now of course. I wanted to watch this this morning but I had some things to do. So good to see the end of the (your) journey KNOWING that, as you are now here in Australia, RR2 is well underway and that the episodes of the build are now not far off. (Whew what a sentence that was). I hope you guys escaped much of the weather we had up here in Sydney (and everywhere else)...Apparently, it stretched from Melbourne all the way to Townsville!!! We are recovering here in Cronulla, Sydney.
Are you guys any closer to doing a sail around these parts? Pop in here at The Port Hacking River if possible as it is a great holiday and anchorage, with access to The Royal National Park, The Sutherland Shire and surrounds. Good shopping, facilities, surf beaches, etc. etc. I can lend you a car if you’re about this way for a few days. Hoping you can pop in as it is a great spot with so many secluded areas for overnighting in! Or, if you wish, I could possibly organise a sail in this area if you are interested sailing around Sydney (twilight sails on Wednesdays, weekend sails on Saturdays and Sundays). Ok, wishing you the best of weather and coastal cruising for the coming weeks/months. Cheers, GB.

At the end you really don't just ride off into the sunset like in the movies. Every day life
is a challenge and that is the way it should be. Great vid guys.

It’s been great watching your videos. The way you both present, it’s like I’m in the boat with you. It must be hard being back. Do you have any plans for the future?

Nice to see you and glad you made it! I am very curious about the new RR! A nice extra is that watching your trip is entertaining but also very educational. Thanks! until next time. Marty

Wait!!! I’ve only watched a few of your episodes, and this one popped up tonight… To say that you are selling and leaving Ruby Rose?! I’ve appreciated the few episodes I’ve watched… I still may go back and watch more. I’m starting my adventures in Tahiti on my Jeanneau 53. You’ve inspired me to be sure I tell my story on UA-cam as well. Hope to see more episodes and your good storytelling ahead.

Well - that diesel problem - in my eyes you were very lucky. Even if you had not such a mess in the tank - but it could be.

As you guys have found out, you need to update your digital tide charts frequently. The accuracy goes down as time goes on after an update. They are only predictions, this is somehing that as a charter boat captain depending on the tides I also had to learn the hard way. I found that some are accurate up to a year in advance, some seem to lose their accuracy after 2 or 3 months. I am in cook inlet which has a 35 foot tide at times so I think the problem is also magnified slightly here. It seems that high current zones are just more unpredictable.

    Wrong tide:
    - was it the different time in St. Hellier?
    - on the other hand, without doing a deep calculation I'm not sure if that passage could fit - I assume, you cannot leave St.Hellier at any time due to a sill?
    - if you are lost, Alderney is also sooo lovely 😀
    -----
Oh Terysa that was very bad: Estimating to a better arrival time normally calls Mc Murphy on the plan 😂
    ---
I also feel wired that this is your last sail on Ruby Rose. Fine boat!

It's been interesting following your travels through the Med, the canal and the east coast of France - I am interested in visiting the east coast of France in the future, and I look forward to seeing the next chapter in your story.

I admit I spent a few nights trying to justify selling a house and mailing y'all a check ....i'm on the great lakes and eastern seaboard ...she'd have been a great Caribbean retirement home ...best wishes and fortune with the new boat...

How apropos of Dr. Nick to use a giant mouth mirror tool to work on hard to see spots on a cruising yacht. That may be one of your finest contributions to the sailing tool kit inventory. BTW have you been called upon to provide emergency dental care to fellow cruisers during your voyages ?
