Many years ago, a close family friend who I grew up with as my cousin was a massive Creed fan, and he was dying of a horrific skin disease. At Creed's height of recording and touring, Mark took the time to befriend Brian and spend some time with him, even bringing him out to Florida with him. Brian was one of the biggest hearted people I've ever known and it was a huge deal to him, so I never miss an opportunity to share this story about them. Mark is the real deal.
I got to hang out with him years ago when he surprisingly showed up at a show that my old band was playing in Tampa. He then invited me and a few others to hang out the next day at Sam Ash. He was genuinely one of the nicest guys I've ever met. Zero ego at all.
Mark is the GOAT. Shreds ✅ writes incredible songs ✅ has a great singing voice ✅ just a good person... like, genuinely one of the nicest dudes I've ever met, and having met him a few times he's always the best. The world needs more people like Mark Tremonti.
About the album format. The main reason it's important to me is that an album give the songs a context. I know where the songs "belong" and where I can find them. There are tons of examples of amazing songs that I forget about because they were released on soundtracks, b-sides or just as single songs on Spotify. Examples: Alice in Chains - What the hell have I?, Megadeth - Angry again and Paradise Lost - Sweetness. Yes eventually they probably end up on some compilation the band releases. But that might be ten years after the song is released and personally I don't really care for compilations. So while releasing songs outside of an album might work fine upon release, the songs risk being forgotten as time goes on. This is off course my very biased opinion... but I still thinks it's damn relevant.

Everything from Rush 2112 to Floyd's The Wall, Operation Mindrime from Queensryche, Dream Theater's Scenes From A Memory, The Who's Tommy...the list is huge. Hell, even the Beatles....We'd all be musically poorer without these. Pros and cons for everything.
Man I was in Milan watching it all happen and it genuinely warmed my heart. Also the crowd was literally on fire when dude yelled he was gonna give away his guitar to the loudest fan. Again and again (see also his Sinatra Down Syndrome charity album) Tremonti proves to be the nicest and hugest-hearted guy around.
Our band got our equipment truck (full) in 2015. Through tips on Facebook we got everything back and intact. It wound up being someone who knew one of our band members. He did time for it since he was on probation for prior drug charges. We were one of the lucky bands --we got tip off info before the dude started selling everything. Whew

I’ve been playing since I was a kid but fell off the last few years due to work, life, ect. But you singly handedly reinvigorated my passion for metal and guitars. Man I got to see Gojira and Jinjer for the first time the other day, was fuckin amazing to say the least. I'm so glad you put me onto Jinjer, talk about a bands that can produce huge quality sound "live" - imo out of the newer band that played they were definitely the tightest and best sounding. You can definitely tell how hard they've worked over the last 10 years. Cool thing about Gojira was they were the only band that laid their cabs down to give more bass and turn it up a bit more than anyone else "because you don't get that top projecting high over surrounding suburbs" definitely a sign of a seasoned Band. PS they weren't headliners 😱 Overall had a really great day and had heaps of fun 🔥❤️🤟
Ola, I just saw the Offspring in concert 2 weeks ago in Windsor Ontario Canada.....Those guys are one of the best in concert right now....Noodles and Dexter are a riot and the stage show and props were top notch !!!!....I'm sure that some songs that are new are being played on the radio already and they are pretty good,....''Let the bad times roll "" is one of the hit songs !!!...They Rock !!!

New MetallicA song was referred to as “boomer rock” 😆 to me it sounds very youthful and a breath of fresh air from those guys. I really dig the new song. Can’t wait for the rest of the album to drop!
My only disappointment was the lead that Kurt contributed after 50 years of playing i was expecting more than he gave ,I mean he was taught by satch.but overall it reminds me of there first album goin back to there roots

I know a lot of guitarists want solos to be well thought out and technical and methodical and all but Kirk has a more punk rock approach. It’s more about grit over composition.

It's not that the kick is in time, it's that it wreaks of snapping every hit to the grid. It is lifeless. In other words, it's TOO in time. Why not just let a robot play the drums instead.

I like your take on the Metallica song. As an OG fan, I felt the same way, but in a more positive way. I've been waiting for a new Metallica song since the Black Album. We all thought that was a phase, then they went Alt Rock and haven't been relevant since. Plus, Robert joined that band but never thought they'd be relevant again, so I'm most happy he gets to make Metallica music, finally.

So it always sells more, but is at the same time less relevant. Unless you're saying Britany Spears was more relevant than Neil Young in the 90's. While she was selling millions, Neil was being named the godfather of grunge, playing with and writing with current musicians. Creating and writing for the sake of art, not dollars. And while he hadn't sold many records for over a decade, his legacy was creating a whole new genre of music. Also, debuting at number 1 is not the same as earning a #1 spot in a thick playing field of competition. For instance, their last album debuted at #1 with less than 300k sold/dl/whatever. So let's keep things in perspective. If we confuse relevancy with popularity, Gangnam Style is the greatest song ever written. As for Metallica, more people know the lyrics to their first 4 albums than everything that came after. And it's why their older material dominates their live performances.
What non-drummers need to understand is that the tempo at which you play double bass is what determines the difficulty. Lux Aeterna is played at what George Kollias would label “level 2”, which is the most simple tempo range. At this range your feet are alternating in an extremely comfortable way which makes it easy to play. When you increase the tempo and start getting into the 170 BPM+ range is when the difficulty increases exponentially as your technique has to change to accommodate the higher speeds. I am certain that the drums on this song are largely quantised and fixed because honestly it sounds like it fits to a grid and Lars isn’t known for being the hardest worker, but that aside, playing double bass at the tempo required in this song is not difficult at all.

About the pickup position on the DimeSlime, I think it's not necessarily a bad thing that it's slightly farther away from the bridge since these Dime pickups are VERY high end oriented most of the time, could bring more balance to the tone maybe haha
Offspring is one of my favorite bands. People don't realize that they have these "silly" songs and most of the rest of the album is serious. Pretty Fly was on Americana, and there are tons of amazing "serious" songs on that album. On their most recent album Let the Bad Times Roll, check out songs like Army of One and The Opioid Diaries. There is no need to "go back" to their roots, they've been consistently coming out with great music in that style all these years, you just have to look past the humorous songs that get more publicity.

About the industry being single driven. Here's my hot take: People used to listen to entire albums like watching a movie, especially in the days of vinyl. Nowadays, it's ALL about single songs on playlists. Awhile goat my day job, I put on a linkin park album because I found out it is my bosses favorite band, what he grew up on. And he LITERALLY said "yeah I like listening to them, just not all day." After ONE 30-40 minute album. I think it's pretty safe to say this has changed because the purpose of music has changed, we used to listen to it as a primary form of entertainment now everyone pretty much uses it for background noise. Secondary to whatever is actually going on. It's pretty saddening, but also makes sense. Us musician have for wayyy to long just assumed we can get away with only making sound, which is really less than half of a performance. Imagine seeing some HUGE band but they're playing on a tiny stage with no lights or cool effects. The only people that would see it are people who GENIUNELY love music. Other than that, music went to the side as soon as movies took over as the main form of entertainment. Which is obviously why UA-cam is so damn popular, and why we're all here right now!
RE: Mark Tremonti giving away guitars. He was doing this on the last Alter Bridge tour in 2019. I saw them at the O2 arena in London right before Xmas that year and right after the band finished playing a song(can't remember which song) Mark(or maybe Myles this time) chose someone from the crowd to take Marks just played guitar home.
That tour he gave away SE guitars. From what I can see, the girl here got his USA model, which is like 6x the price of the SE PRS Tremonti. None-the-less, Mark is just one of the nicest people on the scene. That girl surely won't ever forget that night.

About the stolen gear: usually the people that are touring have the serial numbers and pictures to go with every major piece of gear. It tends to turn up on craigslist (America's version of Blocket) or Facebook marketplace depending on how dumb the thieves are. The rate of recovery depends on how specific the info the owners have on their gear of course, so be sure to photograph and write down those serial numbers!
My neighbor had two of his Ibanez Zyphos guitars stolen right out of his apartment. Dope head girlfriend man, the detectives located them like 2 counties away within the week. They were sitting in a pawn shop on the sales floor.

I know people love to talk shit about Lars, but in the past year he has been playing better than in the last decade if not 15 years. I don't know what exactly he did during the lockdown, but he is keeping time far better, playing more doublebass, and he is doing fills and parts from the original studio recordings that he didn't even bother with in the past 10-15 years. It's really refreshing to see. I just hope the momentum carries all the way to summer 2024 when I get to see them in Finland. Btw, I don't think Pantera is playing any of the European shows.

If I were in a band today, I would go for the ”EP-format” and release 3-4 songs at a time.
I think you should release a double album featuring multiple 10-15 minute songs personally. Seems like a recipe for success.

What a weird complaint "the kick drum sounds in time". Why the heck would anyone record and release a studio recording with out of time drums?
It's not that the kick is in time, it's that it wreaks of snapping every hit to the grid. It is lifeless. In other words, it's TOO in time. Why not just let a robot play the drums instead.
I don't want to hear a new song every couple years, I wanna hear a new album!

Not fake, just heavily, heavily edited (And sample augmented too of course) like Metallica always does; each section super quantized and copy pasted so it sounds a little too good.
I've been told from audience, Lars uses fake drum sticks, they are toy, made of plastic, it's inside is empty, very thin plastic, it bends if you hit hard...

I like your take on the Metallica song. As an OG fan, I felt the same way, but in a more positive way. I've been waiting for a new Metallica song since the Black Album. We all thought that was a phase, then they went Alt Rock and haven't been relevant since. Plus, Robert joined that band but never thought they'd be relevant again, so I'm most happy he gets to make Metallica music, finally.

So it always sells more, but is at the same time less relevant. Unless you're saying Britany Spears was more relevant than Neil Young in the 90's. While she was selling millions, Neil was being named the godfather of grunge, playing with and writing with current musicians. Creating and writing for the sake of art, not dollars. And while he hadn't sold many records for over a decade, his legacy was creating a whole new genre of music. Also, debuting at number 1 is not the same as earning a #1 spot in a thick playing field of competition. For instance, their last album debuted at #1 with less than 300k sold/dl/whatever. So let's keep things in perspective. If we confuse relevancy with popularity, Gangnam Style is the greatest song ever written. As for Metallica, more people know the lyrics to their first 4 albums than everything that came after. And it's why their older material dominates their live performances.
What non-drummers need to understand is that the tempo at which you play double bass is what determines the difficulty. Lux Aeterna is played at what George Kollias would label “level 2”, which is the most simple tempo range. At this range your feet are alternating in an extremely comfortable way which makes it easy to play. When you increase the tempo and start getting into the 170 BPM+ range is when the difficulty increases exponentially as your technique has to change to accommodate the higher speeds.
I am certain that the drums on this song are largely quantised and fixed because honestly it sounds like it fits to a grid and Lars isn’t known for being the hardest worker, but that aside, playing double bass at the tempo required in this song is not difficult at all.
Yeah, I've tried double pedal maybe 5 times and played better than Lars. I'm not even a drummer, just play sometimes.

About the pickup position on the DimeSlime, I think it's not necessarily a bad thing that it's slightly farther away from the bridge since these Dime pickups are VERY high end oriented most of the time, could bring more balance to the tone maybe haha

Next year is the 40th anniversary of Kill 'Em All. Makes sense they'd release an album in 2023.
Offspring is one of my favorite bands. People don't realize that they have these "silly" songs and most of the rest of the album is serious. Pretty Fly was on Americana, and there are tons of amazing "serious" songs on that album. On their most recent album Let the Bad Times Roll, check out songs like Army of One and The Opioid Diaries. There is no need to "go back" to their roots, they've been consistently coming out with great music in that style all these years, you just have to look past the humorous songs that get more publicity.
Ignition was completely serious and it’s one of the best skate punk albums of all time.

I was watching them play this song on UA-cam and totally thought that Lars wasn't playing the kick drum in time to the sound. It shows him behind the kit and when the double kick comes on,it looks like he's just playing the root beat I dunno. Love your show Ola!!!!!!

About the industry being single driven. Here's my hot take: People used to listen to entire albums like watching a movie, especially in the days of vinyl. Nowadays, it's ALL about single songs on playlists. Awhile goat my day job, I put on a linkin park album because I found out it is my bosses favorite band, what he grew up on. And he LITERALLY said "yeah I like listening to them, just not all day." After ONE 30-40 minute album. I think it's pretty safe to say this has changed because the purpose of music has changed, we used to listen to it as a primary form of entertainment now everyone pretty much uses it for background noise. Secondary to whatever is actually going on. It's pretty saddening, but also makes sense. Us musician have for wayyy to long just assumed we can get away with only making sound, which is really less than half of a performance. Imagine seeing some HUGE band but they're playing on a tiny stage with no lights or cool effects. The only people that would see it are people who GENIUNELY love music. Other than that, music went to the side as soon as movies took over as the main form of entertainment. Which is obviously why UA-cam is so damn popular, and why we're all here right now!

He was doing this on the last Alter Bridge tour in 2019.
I saw them at the O2 arena in London right before Xmas that year and right after the band finished playing a song(can't remember which song) Mark(or maybe Myles this time) chose someone from the crowd to take Marks just played guitar home.
That tour he gave away SE guitars. From what I can see, the girl here got his USA model, which is like 6x the price of the SE PRS Tremonti. None-the-less, Mark is just one of the nicest people on the scene. That girl surely won't ever forget that night.

About the stolen gear: usually the people that are touring have the serial numbers and pictures to go with every major piece of gear. It tends to turn up on craigslist (America's version of Blocket) or Facebook marketplace depending on how dumb the thieves are. The rate of recovery depends on how specific the info the owners have on their gear of course, so be sure to photograph and write down those serial numbers!

My neighbor had two of his Ibanez Zyphos guitars stolen right out of his apartment. Dope head girlfriend man, the detectives located them like 2 counties away within the week. They were sitting in a pawn shop on the sales floor.

I know people love to talk shit about Lars, but in the past year he has been playing better than in the last decade if not 15 years. I don't know what exactly he did during the lockdown, but he is keeping time far better, playing more doublebass, and he is doing fills and parts from the original studio recordings that he didn't even bother with in the past 10-15 years. It's really refreshing to see. I just hope the momentum carries all the way to summer 2024 when I get to see them in Finland. Btw, I don't think Pantera is playing any of the European shows.
