There's a lot of holes in Yasuke's history irl so I can forgive some mystical elements being added, especially since Japanese folklore was so prevalent during that time period. But adding robots? Idk man...
My main problem with Netflix anime is that they try to pander too much to what they think people who watch anime only wanna see. "Yeah we gotta have giant robots and super-powered kids, yeah and giant monster battles too!"
Reminds me of another anime called "Reign" about Alexander The Great, where he fights mutant ninjas while riding a demonic horse and all types of other weird shit.
Overall Yasuke is a good anime despite it's pacing and VA problems. It has a phenomenal OST, and a strong story of redemption tackling discrimination and honor. Also the fights are top tier as expected by Mappa. Highly recommend it if you want a fun samurai anime
Despite the magic and mechs, a lot of it is actually fairly accurate to history, apart from some details. [spoilers] All the Nobunaga scenes were based on real life, the magic people did were based on mythological creatures and imagery (the main villain was based on spider and centipede demons). There was Christianity present in Japan at the time. Nobunaga's male lover was part of a common practice among samurai called Wakashudo. Onna-bugeisha or women warriors were also known. The betrayal was accurate, his sieges were fairly accurate, etc. I definitely would've preferred more history but honestly I think it was a fun series and hope for more.
Yasuke was Kenyan, from the Kenyan coast, is said he recited poetry of the Mijikenda tribe in Kenya. The Jesuit Portugese priests had a fort in Kenya called Fort Jesus, where the held Afrikans in dungeons before selling them off to Arabs.
Wish LeSean Thomas would make a sequel to Children of Ether. Also a season 2 for Cannon Busters. Hopefully this series gives him some more backing to make those
Listening to you guys talk about anime is great. I've always been curious to see how casual watchers of it would react to stuff that most fans are used to. You guys are fair, but firm with your feelings about everything.
Sengoku Basara is another anime, that is based on history. Lol Takakatsu Honda is depicted as a giant robot too. And that is just a little bit of the craziness, but yeah it is based on actual events. Love it! And I check this out too.
It's more of they started off marketing it as historical take on yasuke . Then the first episode came and it was so far from it . I love the show and the animation was amazing, it just I am disappointed they turn what could have been a teachable moment into a fantasy story with robots ,wizards and she bears up against a warrior who rowed a boat .
They did explain the other foreigners, and the mech suits. The "Super Hero Team," as you called them, were actually a group of foreign mercenaries hired by the priest dude to help find that little magic girl. The mech suits were explained as having been brought over to Japan by the Mongols when they invaded. After defeating the Mongols, they took the mech suit tech, reverse engineered it, and made it their own. Now, wherever the hell the Mongols supposedly got the mech suits from, your guess is as good as mine. But yeah, they did give an explanation about them, albeit a preposterous one.
Yasuke feels like a mash-up of the Golden Child (remember the old Eighties Eddie Murphy joint where he has to protect a Buddhist messiah from demons?), Afro Samurai, Samurai Champloo and about dozen different fantasy and giant robot anime influences. It's funny: those are all things I have enjoyed, but I must be too "casual" an anime fan, because to have them all thrown in the pot here left me a bit cold. It's not BAD, exactly, and many of the elements on their own are really cool: I dug the mercenary super-team, especially the Russian werebear lady, the robot and the elven-sorcerer-from-Benin guy with his badass ghost holograms that looked like bronzes. But having *everything* in the gumbo was just a bit too... rich for my blood, I guess. I gave it a good shot, but I wouldn't watch it again. Honestly, I get why the creators love the mixture of elements they threw in here. But I feel like I kind of... just wanted to see someone tell the actual story of Yasuke. Or at least use that story as the core of a historical samurai anime. His story is really much cooler on its own than anything you can bring to the game by throwing in mecha and a dozen other Anime Tropes.
From the way you guys are describing it, this feels like a reverse Cowboy Bebop. In the sense that Cowboy Bebop took place in the future, but its story did its best to be grounded. This take place in the past, but its story is trying extremely hard to be "fantastical". As an anime fan, if you guys do want to watch some anime with grounded stories with grounded black characters. I suggest Michiko and Hatchin, Black Lagoon, Samurai Champloo, Carol and Tuesday, and The Great Pretender. All have some pretty interesting black characters who models arent drawn too extreme of offensively
This is created by LeSean Thomas who was on Black dynamite animated show, boondocks, cannon busters, children of ether. However LeSean Thomas seemed to write most of this show. However it fells in the vein of afro samurai. So I wasn't expecting much. It fells like an American cartoon with Japanese anime mask.
To many agendas on this series, the scenario of black samurai in feudal japan itself is already heavy and complicated enough. But they really need to add mecha, magic, russian druid, gay pimp nobunaga who cant control his PP near ranmaru.
Have korey and Martin tried something like a silent voice or your name? It’s great and character-driven and more like dramas. They’d probably like it more than these shounen-action shows
Another great character-driven anime with a fantastic story and really no anime tropes that not a lot of people ever talk about is Naoki Urasawa's Monster, granted it's quite long at 74 episodes but definitely worth the watch.
@@asscake1849 Yeah that’s cause that’s what anyone ever talks about. Like in their dragon ball:broly review, no offense to DJ miles, but hearing him talk about it was pretty cringe. If I was korey and Martin I would’ve been turned off to. Hopefully martin’s daughter puts him on the good stuff.
I've seen the whole series and it feels like a movie like Ninja Scrolls. I did wish they talked more of the world but I didn't expect a historic story from the trailers. It was alright to me, not too into the protector trope or "child of fate" thing.
I wonder if Korey and Martin watch any of Satoshi Kon’ s works. I would love to see them review, Perfect blue, Millennium actress, Tokyo godfathers, paprika or paranoia agent. Beautiful works of art.
The comment about not committing to the storyline rings true. Kind of like the Celia Cruz telenovela. Felt like Yasuke was used to hook us in but it really wasn't about it in a lead sense.
I was a surprised that there was robots in it in ancient times. But it also gave me a throwback to Afro samurai that also had robots. Afro Samurai fought a robot clone.
An infamously powerful Samurai whose master has fallen and has sense discovered a life of peace being dragged back into a life of violence may have just made Yasuke seem like a black Rurouni Kenshin so I can see wanting to avoid that, but so far I'm only at episode 6 but this feels more like Saki's story than Yasuke's. He even loses damn near every fight he's in and has to have her bail him out.
I just finished it. It's basically Ninja Scroll. I get why it's people could have problems with it. There's a lot of Japanese mythology in it. Plus, the robots (which is very weird) is the equivalent of gun powder weapons that Nobunaga used to great effect.
Flying Lotus composed the music for Blade Runner: Black Out 2022 which sounded great. His music video featuring Anderson Paak. also has anime done by the artist for Cowboy Bebop. So when I looked up this show and it said Flying Lotus did the music, co-wrote and co-produced it, now I am very interested. Plus it has Lakeith Stanfield so it sounds awesome.
You're absolutely right, the anime community definitely lets thing slide that they'd never let slide in other mediums. Anime fans never heard of cinematography, nuance or writing. They accept all the cringey tropes without demanding better, theyre content as long as the sakuga is good and animation is flashy. I know because ive struggled to find anime that comes close to the movies or tv shows I've seen. Not to say they don't exist, they do but they're few and far between.
After watching this I finished the series ,I liked it !!.They made Yasuke loving and caring ..people were expecting a boisterous stereotypical nigga ,don’t think they were going for accuracy or make it Afrocentric. Yassan is a cool thoughtful level headed well spoken guy .It was okay.
I disagree with u saying anime fans will be fine. Most of us anime fans think this is trash too lol. Don’t get it twisted. Y’all should watch moribito instead
Never been a fan of Netflix anime/cartoons besides Castlevania so I'm not surprised this was disappointing. I'm sure there's a writer that would do the Yasuka story some justice. Edit: I meant writer not studio, my bad.
Dude I watch anime all the time... almost every day and even I was like "WTF is going on here? Why are there robots? Mutants? WTF am I watching?" Anime can be serious and historical. Just look at things like Vinland Saga. I thought the characters and story elements were really good, but I have no idea why they decided to go over the top like that. Anime is just a storytelling medium, it's not a stew where you just throw every ingredient you have into the pot. There are anime that are crazy and over the top just for the sake of it, but most anime has to at least make SOME sense and explain to the audience what is going on.

And even with Killer Bee he was created as Kishimoto's appreciation for rap and hip hop culture (his exact words) and thought it would be fun challenge to create a character who spoke in rap rhymes all the time. Stereotypical yes but it came from a place of appreciation and Killer Bee is a fucking badass that gets shit done and played a big part in Naruto's development in the later parts of Part 2. In an interview he even said Killer Bee was one of his favorite characters. There is a reason behind the Raikage's anger issues and over the course of the story he learns to calm down even going to forgive Sasuke for his actions and having a calm conversation with the man who assaulted his brother and took his arm. Even if you can justify Barro how do you justify a black man with dreads who turns into gorilla who is actually named JEROME, a fucking pumpkin, and please look at NaNaNa Najahkoop and tell me that it is even a remotely okay depiction of a black male. As for Pepe. He does give off a genie vibe but that isn't a hundred percent clear and most people who look at him will assume black. Black, Indian, doesn't matter it's honestly isn't a good depiction of anybody. And if you want to use the argument that Pepe might not even be black you can also apply that to Yoroichi. Her features are way too narrow and unAfrican compared to the other black characters of Bleach like Jackie and Tosen. She can either be an extremely tanned Asian (not like Ganguro girls aren't a thing in Japan lol) or maybe biracial or just a dark skinned anime character (actual race and ethnicity be damned).

I was hoping for a Rurouni Kenshin style of anime where we kind of focus on the historical setting of Feudal Japan at the time and what a marvel it would have been to have an African samurai. Instead this show goes an entire different direction and fictionalizes a non-fiction story. This takes away from the natural allure and power of Yasuke as a true story and cheapens it with robots, vampires and bear mortals. What a terrible decision.
The problem is that the story progressed far too quickly so fast that end up stumbling over itself after the second half and then it just became generic boring annoying are anime
I was expecting it to not be historical but I was hoping for something like Django Unchained with Yasuke cutting down a lot of people in a badass fashion, instead all the mechas and wizards threw me off.
I’m an anime fan, but I was profoundly disappointed when I found out that they turned this into a stereotypical anime show. Japan has to resist the urge to put the same shit in everything.
Giant talking laser robots, were-bears and wizard children no one bats an eye. But a black samurai, even the other black character was like "now I've seen everything."
Wishing Double Toasted would make a video or two talking about Boondocks and Black Dynamite, both really awesome animated shows featuring a black cast as their main leads
To fantasise a real history, makes the real history look false. Yasuke wasn’t just the first Black Samurai, he was the first non-Japanese Samurai and helped create unite Japan under one flag. I think the real history is exciting enough without robots
Korey, I don't know you read comments and I hope I am not annoying you with this but for the third time please watch the Saga of Tanya The Evil. That is what I got and like it too.
I loved Samurai 7! Actually rewatched it recently and it still blew my mind.
Exactly, same thing I said watching it, which Samurai 7 was dope too!
Pasing is better in Samurai 7 tho
Me too. I loved it. Probably helped that I didn’t know Yasuke was real so I wasn’t expecting a historically accurate ultra realistic story.
I really hope they watch the Demon Slayer show ^_^
I love that anime 😍😍😍
They already did a couple days ago
He's no Afro Samurai, but I guess he'll do.
There's a lot of holes in Yasuke's history irl so I can forgive some mystical elements being added, especially since Japanese folklore was so prevalent during that time period. But adding robots? Idk man...
They could have done this like Vinland saga no need for magic, demons, or robots
My main problem with Netflix anime is that they try to pander too much to what they think people who watch anime only wanna see.
"Yeah we gotta have giant robots and super-powered kids, yeah and giant monster battles too!"
That’s like 90% of anime. The other 10% is the slice of life school anime which tends to be the more boring
Reminds me of another anime called "Reign" about Alexander The Great, where he fights mutant ninjas while riding a demonic horse and all types of other weird shit.
What?
That sounds so weird
Flying lotus is a musical genius and he doesn't really get notice that much.
Overall Yasuke is a good anime despite it's pacing and VA problems. It has a phenomenal OST, and a strong story of redemption tackling discrimination and honor.
Also the fights are top tier as expected by Mappa. Highly recommend it if you want a fun samurai anime
Honestly the ost didn't hit like 96%.
Of the time
OST was great, hooked on it already
Did the fantastical elements add anything that more realistic, though made-up, conflicts couldn't have?
THIS IS NOT JAPANESE ANIME, THIS WAS WRITTEN BY A BLACK DUDE FROM AMERICA LESEAN THOMAS. BUT IT WAS ANIMATED BY THE JAPANESE COMPANY MAPPA.
?
Yasuke was Kenyan, from the Kenyan coast, is said he recited poetry of the Mijikenda tribe in Kenya. The Jesuit Portugese priests had a fort in Kenya called Fort Jesus, where the held Afrikans in dungeons before selling them off to Arabs.
Chadwick would had been perfect for Yasuke!!
I guess maybe it works in the world of Afro Samurai and Samurai 7 where they seem to mix both feudal worlds with futuristic technology.
Wish LeSean Thomas would make a sequel to Children of Ether. Also a season 2 for Cannon Busters.
Hopefully this series gives him some more backing to make those
Is children of ether on Netflix??? Didn’t know he had another project
People are still mad that he didnt send out the rewards for all the backers of the pilot on Kickstarter
I wish Martin stop comparing everything to Miyazaki films it's not fair
I'm half Japanese, was born and raised in Japan. I don't remember the tales of Yasuke involving robots. 😆😆😆😆🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵
That's what they don't tell you in history class

So it not about the Black samurai, I was hoping to see more about him. I still check it out. Thanks for the info DT.
It is. But he’s not the “chosen one”. He’s protecting the chosen one, kinda like The Witcher with Ciri
Listening to you guys talk about anime is great. I've always been curious to see how casual watchers of it would react to stuff that most fans are used to. You guys are fair, but firm with your feelings about everything.
Yeah the anime community can be toxic. Just ignore them at times. I know because I'm apart of it.
I saw some weebs saying racist shit about this show a few weeks ago. I really fucking hate the anime community 😤

Sengoku Basara is another anime, that is based on history. Lol Takakatsu Honda is depicted as a giant robot too. And that is just a little bit of the craziness, but yeah it is based on actual events. Love it! And I check this out too.
I checked the comments to see if someone mention him and yes, a BASARA feels!!!!
I heard some history of him, he was a monster
@Anne Lowe and i expected more little from SW anime but SB was more stylish (and Production IG did an badass job °°)
Sengoku Basara was way better than this. The games are great too.
When did they ever market it as “historically accurate” the first photos I saw was him fighting sorcerers.
it went all crazy at episode 4. I really was holding it together but this eventually wasn't about Yasuke
Once I heard they'd be robpts I knew it wouldn't focus on Yasuke specifically.
Lesean Thomas had another show called cannon busters I feel like he tried to slip some of those moments in it
Waiting for Cannon Busters season 2

However it fells in the vein of afro samurai.
So I wasn't expecting much. It fells like an American cartoon with Japanese anime mask.
I think he dropped the ball. Cannon Busters was better.

Yeah that’s cause that’s what anyone ever talks about.
I actually thoroughly enjoyed this. That intro track is so good. Props to FlyingLotus
The comment about not committing to the storyline rings true. Kind of like the Celia Cruz telenovela. Felt like Yasuke was used to hook us in but it really wasn't about it in a lead sense.
I am so happy that there is a black samurai
Double Toasted are at it again! They should do these kind of reviews sometimes.
And it was.
I hope they review BEASTARS nextime!^^
You're absolutely right, the anime community definitely lets thing slide that they'd never let slide in other mediums. Anime fans never heard of cinematography, nuance or writing. They accept all the cringey tropes without demanding better, theyre content as long as the sakuga is good and animation is flashy. I know because ive struggled to find anime that comes close to the movies or tv shows I've seen. Not to say they don't exist, they do but they're few and far between.
You have no idea what you are talking about. Anime fans don't know nuances and good writing. You sound crazy
there was deadass one throwaway line about why there was mechs in the show. i literally looked at my phone for a sec and almost missed it
After watching this I finished the series ,I liked it !!.They made Yasuke loving and caring ..people were expecting a boisterous stereotypical nigga ,don’t think they were going for accuracy or make it Afrocentric. Yassan is a cool thoughtful level headed well spoken guy .It was okay.
Exactly
I disagree with u saying anime fans will be fine. Most of us anime fans think this is trash too lol. Don’t get it twisted. Y’all should watch moribito instead
Never been a fan of Netflix anime/cartoons besides Castlevania so I'm not surprised this was disappointing. I'm sure there's a writer that would do the Yasuka story some justice.
Edit: I meant writer not studio, my bad.
There is no better studio than mappa right now
You mean writer not studio. Mappa does great work its the creator and writers that messed up. LeSean needs to think before he writes stories.
@@LionClanChief that's what I meant to say, probably should've reiterated what I said.
I agree with Korey and Martin. I was expecting this to be a historical-ish Anime. I was so caught off guard with the Mechs, Stands, and WereBears.
Bleach is probably one of the best anime that has cool black characters who aren't Stereotypes.
And a hellava lot of Mexicans.
@@DarkEdge1231 I think you're reaching all characters have crazy transformations like harribel. Using naruto is not great either. Who should I use killer bee the rapper with the cornrows or the loud month always angry Raikage?
@@dec2567 I don't know man can you find me a transformation dumber than a pumpkin man covered in eyes (Zommari), an overweight man in diapers (Pepe Waccabrda), and turning into a chicken (Lille Barro). Even Tosen's transformation was lame as fuck. And don't get me started on Jerome (WHO LITERALLY TURNS INTO A GORILLA). A lot of people miss out on Jerome since he was killed off screen by Kenpachi. Hallibel's transformation is cool not lame and dumb. Most of the transformations are badass or feels like they're trying to be badass (Grimmjow). The only other transformation (from a non black dude) that is more on the horrendous and disfigured side is Kirge Opie's and in that case I can still take it seriously. I'm laughing my ass at how fucking stupid a lot of how some those black (male) characters transformations are.
Well I said Naruto was better (it is) not perfect. And that is just 2 characters. There are a ton more black characters in the show that are insanely badass and not stereotypical at all like Darui and Omoi. All good guys who gain a fair share amount of character development who don't turn into an ape, a giant chicken, or a fucking pumpkin.
@@DarkEdge1231 just because you don't like the transformation doesn't meant it's offensive. Lilie barro x axis power was good and he was a strong character that need plot armor to beat. @@dec2567 Killer Bee turned into Gyuki. Something from Japanese mythology and he doesn't turn into it that is his inner Tailed Beast (and it's not even the goofiest Tailed Beast in the series). Yes Lille's defeat was deus ex machina ASSPULL at it's finest. Glad we can agree on that. Making him overpowered doesn't change the fact in the end he turns into some giant dumb chickens running around. Barro does start off as a pretty cool arch angel thing going but once he turned into that alien owl it's when things started going downhill. His fight was lame as fuck and his defeat was lazy writing at it's finest and his final defeat was pathetic. Its honestly a lot worst that they built him as a big threat and gave him a lame ass anticlimatic defeat and he turns into a bunch of running chickens. The other 3 Elite Sternritters (Askin, the Thor guy, and Perninda) got more badass defeats that felt earned and satisfying. Kubo CUCKED Barro.
Why can't we get CANNONBUSTERS, SECOND SEASON?!?!?!!??
That said, I'll def check this out.
This series was basically the equivalent of Nioh. It has historical figures in a fantasy setting during Feudal Japan. Nioh followed William Adams and Yasuke follows Yasuke. Both are great.
I could have looked passed the magic but the robots and tech stuff was too much.
@@LionClanChief i saw that as a bit of a nod to Samurai Seven so it didn't really bother me. However i would have loved it to stay more grounded along the lines of Blade Of The Immortal or Samurai X. I still enjoyed it though.
Hey Korey have you ever seen Michiko to Hatchin that anime takes place in some fictional Latin American country it looks like the country is based off Brazil that has what looks to be Afro-Latino characters in it?

I was hoping for a Rurouni Kenshin style of anime where we kind of focus on the historical setting of Feudal Japan at the time and what a marvel it would have been to have an African samurai. Instead this show goes an entire different direction and fictionalizes a non-fiction story. This takes away from the natural allure and power of Yasuke as a true story and cheapens it with robots, vampires and bear mortals. What a terrible decision.
The problem is that the story progressed far too quickly so fast that end up stumbling over itself after the second half and then it just became generic boring annoying are anime
Yeah I felt like plot points were missing
I was expecting it to not be historical but I was hoping for something like Django Unchained with Yasuke cutting down a lot of people in a badass fashion, instead all the mechas and wizards threw me off.
I’m an anime fan, but I was profoundly disappointed when I found out that they turned this into a stereotypical anime show. Japan has to resist the urge to put the same shit in everything.
Stereotypical how?
Giant talking laser robots, were-bears and wizard children no one bats an eye. But a black samurai, even the other black character was like "now I've seen everything."
That part did make me laugh.
Starting from the second episode you will love it I promise.
