Boss OS-2 - What's the difference between overdrive and distortion, anyway?

- The Boss OS-2 mixes smooth, asymmetric soft clipping overdrive with crunchy symmetric hard clipping distortion, but is that enough to make this a pedal worth seeking out? What do all those words even mean? Let's get to the bottom of it.

This was absolutely brilliant. Thank you for making such an insanely informative and uplifting video.
Wow, thank you for the kind words!
This pedal is versatile depending on how you dial each knob. It can play any genre and mimic different types of amp and gain effects; also as booster. Many says this is crap but only few knew this is gold!
Great video man, you really know how to explain the important parts, even the technical interesting bits. 👏
Awesome video, did great explaining the differences. Thank you.
Fantastic video... I really like the quick visual of the circuit, I feel like I learned something
Awesome I didn't know there was actually two circuits in the pedal I just got one of those and a boss ds1 at around the same time and like the os2 way more than the ds1 or any other boss overdrive at the moment it sounds great to me with the color right in the middle pretty much
Finally a video about pedals that makes sense. Thank you algorithm and thank you sir for great content!
Thanks for sharing, enjoyed your video.
this was great explanation, thanks!
One thing I have learned over the years is that choosing "YOUR" best pedal is a complex thing. What fit's best for you is a personal preference, dictated by one's gear, musical ear, playing ability, goals, and musical preference. Example - After fifty years of looking for that perfect pedal to carry me on to my glorious Stairway to Heaven perfection, it all boils down to your own moment in time. Where is this going? Haven't a clue. Right now, the amps I use the most are Marshall/Friedman. The Boss BD-2 Keeley modded points me there (sure it would not have to be Keeley modded, I guess). In this moment in my time, this pedal is an absolutely must.
I have the Boss OS-2, tried using it a few times but always put it on the shelf of dreams (very similar to yours). At 7:45 in your vid you said it best. Nothing wrong with the pedal, it's a great pedal, especially for those wishing to maintain a sleek pedal board. There are many overdrive/distortion pedals on my shelf of dreams that are more expensive than the BD-2/Keeley but in this moment in time? For me? The BD-2 is leading me up the stairway to my dreams of perfection.
Luv your vids big guy, they are so well presented. The pedal Show can learn from you..
I've got one, and I'm very satisfied.
Great job!
Super interesting, thanks
No kidding here, I watched 7 videos today and they all told me why this pedal sucked. Or just demoed what the pedal sounds like. But this is the only one that actually explained how to use it. Thanks, Stompbox Breakdown, liked. Subscribed. Gonna check out all of these vids.
Also the OS-Toodaloo pun was solid. B+ at least.
which one would be good to imitate the crunch of the xone 96 mixer? to use on send and return on analog mixer, with electronic music (tech house and techno)
For Rock sounds i like to use the color knob to 7.5 and the drive knob to 7.5. Because i feel the overdrive have more precence than distorsion using the color knob in the middle, and the drive knob if i turn to 10 the distortion come to break up and sound like fuzz, and i feel the limit is 5 to 8 thats make the distortion sound well, mixing with the overdrive balancing between them and blending, combining their sound, sounding just like a distorted valve amp.
Thanks, I bought this pedal yesterday on my GuitarFair, liked the possibilities, but don't know how this pedal and pedals in general work inside. I knew the terms hard- and softclipping and (a-) symetric, but now I know what it means..... 😊
best demo in the UA-cam
That OS-2, Color knob at 12:00, sounds fantastic. Might be the first Boss pedal I've gassed for in a long time that's not a 3-knobber (I am irrationally partial towards 3-knob Boss pedals. Which makes me so sad when my PH-1r was stolen :'( )
A stolen PH-1r?!?! Noooo!!! That thing’s a gem, sorry to hear. I like the OS-2’a color knob right in the middle, too. When you mix up your playing, you can hear different characteristics come out.
@@StompboxBreakdown It sounds so good. Like, cuts through like a DS-1 but thick like an OD. If I found out about this pedal back during my "buy everything on TGP" days, I'd probably have just called it quits.
Does it sound equally as good in the mix? I am amazed that Boss continues to make DS-1s and OD-3s with this baby on the market. (Except that both those pedals have 3 knobs so obviously I own them instead)
I bought OS 2 to keep money and I didn't regret. When I put Drive and Distorsion to the max, it reminds me Metallica Kill'em all sound. That's pretty cool. And OD, for the blues to the hard -rock sounds very well ... Versatile and simple, and BOSS, so no risk ...
I think you have an SD2 (dual overdrive) perdal on the top shelf.
Can you do a video for this pedal ?
Good idea, I’ll add it to the list
@@StompboxBreakdown thx in advance 🙏
What Boss OD circuit is in this box? I compared it to my OD-3 and they aren't the same. Maybe the distortion circuit colors the tone even when dialed all the way to OD. Could it be the SD-1
Boss SD-1 and Boss DS-1
Joey Santiago pedal in the 90s all along with the Mashall guvnor
Love this pedal. I use it for getting Jerry Garcia 80s & 90s distorted sounds
I got my OS2 used for 25 bucks, best investment ever!
I got mine free lol ☺️
So wait doesn't that make a fulltone ocd a distortion pedal?
Depends what metric you use to classify. I think either angle could be argued pretty effectively, and if Boss were to hit out an OCD clone, they’d avoid the issue altogether and just call it a “drive” pedal.
I Love my Angry Driver. I’m stacking it with a Conspiracy Theory & it’s beyond wonderful.
Is it worth the price?
I love my OS-2
It’s a great one
How's the FULLTONE OCD?
I’ve always felt like it’s a great pedal in the right hands. Works well as a solo boost and thick overdrive, but it’s transparent, its not an amp-in-a-box, so start with a guitar and amp you like, and use the OCD to push it a bit in the solos and riffs.
I just picked up one of the os2’s for $25, seems pretty cool. And if the Friedman was a ham sandwich I’d probably want it more.
Definitely a good pedal to have around. I made this video before I learned the best (or at least a better way) of recording overdrives. Don’t hold that clip against the Friedman… although a ham sandwich does sound nice right now
I own this pedal and it's definitely a go-to for varied dirt ever since I got it, I like the distortion more than my DS1 and I adore blend/colour/dual circuitry.

Want that guitar
I’ve seen more than a few local pros use the OS-2 in their rig. It’s not a signature type of sound, but when you need to get a lot done, it hits all the bases.
And yeah, the G&L is nothing short of amazing. It’s a semi-hollowbody but without the f-hole, so its just very light and resonant. I’d play it more, but it really needs an intonation.
@@StompboxBreakdown I've played thinlines since my late teens and have really connected with the sound! I need to find me one of those
RIP Earphone

Seems so close to a Vintage Rat.
On distortion the bite is just too much, even with the tone all the way down. Had to sell it.
Think of it like this. OD is like a high class sophisticated Call girl where Distortion is like a much less sophisticated cheaper version?
The first original is the very best. You're not gonna make it any better. , try as they might, but the number one is there. And it is what it is this one just does not cut the Mustard
You are sooo cute!
Only a few have said to me "It's a good pedal, you just gotta dial it in the right way!"
That's not a good pedal. This thing is shrill, very annoying.
