  • Overview of the Van Staal VR150 saltwater spinning reel. This is Van Staal's entry level reel, and to call it a budget reel would be an insult; it's amazing. $1000 performance and saltwater protection at a price point half of that. If you're a serious surf caster, it's worth a look.

    stuff i may have missed since i film late in one take: VR150 line lay is good, slightly bottom heavy. the handle is NOT interchangeable; reel shown is left hand only. if your reel starts spinning smoother and smoother, could actually indicate seals are failing. service is great; rebuilt/repaired reel turnover from manu is about 2 weeks. Van Staal is owned by Zebco, and the VR line is made in China (another reason cost is lower compared to VS line), although i believe service centers are US-based.

    • @tunanorth

      VS are also made in China, and ZB also manufactured in China for a time, but ZB recently moved back to US build.

    Love the review. I looked everywhere online for a VR150 Gen 2 in silver with no luck. I finally ended up with a choice between a VR175 and VR200. Anything else in stock was under the VR150 size. I just ordered a VR200 Gen 2. Since the VR175 and VR200 share the exact same body and rotor, I went with the larger spool. The VR200 only weighs 1/2 ounce more than the VR175. I decided it was worth it for 10% more line capacity.
    A VR150 would have met my needs if they were available. I do think I'll get some good use out of the bigger reel. They supposedly lengthened the stem on the newer Gen 2 models so no knuckle busting. I'm not a surf fisherman. I bought it to toss lures at tuna from a boat. When it comes to tuna over 100#, it's hard to think of any spinning reel as being "too large". I realize any good quality saltwater spinning reel could hold up to boat fishing, but I it's nice to have a sealed reel of a tried and trusted brand. I thought about trying the Tsunami SaltX 6000 but it's not been out in the wild long enough for me to totally trust it. Add to that I can't find an online source for parts, and it became a deal breaker. I know if I ever need a part for the Van Staal, I can find it easily. I'll start with an aluminum knob. I think the Derin knob is fine, but I like the aluminum knob. The Tsunami would have been over $200 cheaper, but I was looking for a proven quality reel instead of saving a few dollars. Perhaps I'll revisit the Tsunami SaltX in a few years if they prove to last and parts can be found. I'm not suggesting Tsunami wouldn't fix my reel if something got broken. I prefer to order parts if and when I need them and repair the reels myself. I wouldn't want to be forced to send it to a service center for something I could replace myself.

    I just got one over a shimano twin power. It was tough because I spend half the year in FL boat fishing, and surf fishing there, but not as much as the boat and the other half in MA fishing cape cod where it’s traditional surf fishing. Boulders, waves, all the elements. I needed a reel that could do both and handle the beatings. I think this is the best for that. I’ll take the extra weight and lack of smoothness to gain the durability and reliability. When I only lived in FL I used Shimano Stradics and Quantum Cabo’s but these days I love the Tsunami Salt X and this VR. They can do it all. Your review helped make my decision, great stuff.

    Very informative video. But, as someone who spent years surf fishing from Montauk to Cape Cod, I can tell you that your definition of skishing in the video is incorrect. No surf fisherman who perches themself on a rock at Montauk would say they went skishing. Skishing is actually putting on a bouyant wetsuit with flippers, live-lining eels, and letting the currents and stripers take you where they want. Two very different thinks.

      My mind when i bought my vr150 was i dont want to spend money on anymore new reels, i want a reel that works and keeps going with care, ive gone through lots of reels even a penn spinfisher ssv. I dont look for price or fasion i look for procticallity and honestly there are probally reels that are cheaper that might be as good but ive gone through all companys reels even shimano infor ive had 5 stradics go to crap on my with all the albys and big stripers i hook up on and use everyday out off shore and on the beaches of marthasvinyard, i will say i almost got a saragosa but i want something that will keep going like the old penns i have but with something more modern and had parts support.

    • @ishwithfish
      @ishwithfish  7 років тому +1

      yup, i think the avg serious salt angler starts by following trends and friends and extracting the most from mid-priced gear and eventually comes around to higher end, fully-sealed, and parts-supported reels. all my surfcasting friends have done that. not that there's no place for all the other reels in the market, it's that the surf is the great equalizer for fancy-looking gear vs gear that can actually last. from what I've heard the VR line can do both:) btw, if anyone reading this is on a budget, wants a bombproof reel, just find a used Daiwa Black Gold (original BG) with low hours on it; it'll last forever.

      ah, if you're primarily fishing from a boat, imo any vr is not the right application. the vr50 is geared kinda fast for surf presentations and may be undersized if you hook some big pelagic. you could buy 2 saltists for 375 and have 2 better boat reels.

    Read all you can; for me, this seems way, way too much money for what it is--but who knows? I do understand? they don't offer a service kit, it that is true, not happy about that. How much drag is offered? Made in China, for sure a turn off...for me and based on my opinion of what they don't do over there. One thing is clear: for most of us, it is important that for THAT money, it be very good, and I see two big knocks, right off the top. Maybe anything and everything IS made in China, if that is true, then OK, so be it. But not having a service kit? Can you get is serviced, CAN you sort a way to service it yourself? Is it sealed where you CAN'T get at it. Just consider what you are getting, vs other reals. My new Cabo is far less money, but offers 40 pounds drag, and taken apart, it is one of the few found CORRECTLY lubed in all parts--and is easily serviced, just to give one example.

      Ish With Fish you mention northeast surf fishing use several times which there is nothing unique about it. Wether your reel is being dunked in Key West, Montauk, San Diego, Seattle or Honolulu there are surf fisherman putting their reels through the ringer everywhere. There are several reels under 300 that claim to be waterproof. VR doesn’t have an IP rating which means no verifiable test to its actual waterproofing. Just the word of the company. I would stick to the specifications of the reel and not compare it’s “intended” use to regions or other products. Maybe narrow minded wasn’t the best way of putting it, but more of not being completely intellectually honest. Air Jordan’s and ASIC’s probably have the same use and durability but you’re paying for something which should be apart of an honest overview.
