    The original lineup is one of the greatest bands in rock history, Robin Trower with the late, great B.J. Wilson smoking hot.

    ahh, great gig! Just after I got fired as roadie (I wasn't the world's best guy for that job)--Mick took over, and did a fine job. BJ was very kind to me at the time, took an interest in a lowly roadie's musical aspirations, was the only one to give me his blessing when I started off in my own band. Love this incarnation of he band, a great period of creativity. Standard fare, by the way, for warmups before the actual gig, was old 50's rock and roll. Gary could really tear it up!

    Regardless of his off-hour tendencies, B.J. Wilson is, by many standards, easy top 5 drummers. R.I.P. I saw this band in the Capital Theatre in Westchester NY 1970 summer, they blew the roof off the place.

      Hello and nice to make your acquaintance. I am author of Procol Harum - The Ghosts Of A Whiter Shade of Pale - The Procol Harum Biography out on Omnibus Press 2012. Only a few copies remain as its now out of print at Amazon or Abe.com In 1995 I reached out to Murray Lerner director of Message to Love the IOW film. He sent me a VHS of 4 songs one of which is a medley into R n R covers. The Procol songs cut from three camera angles were Your Own Choice (off Home) Juicy John Pink (A Salty Dog) A Salty Dog and Homburg. The first two faired well but the latter two lacked sparkle. Procol's lyric writer Keith Reid agreed and when approached by Lerner in 1997 opted to decline their usage in Message to Love. This is a shame as clearly the rhythm section in a Procol back-to-a-four piece in 1970 were on fire . Meanwhile, it looks like Historic Films Inc NYC USA (aka Joe Lauro) are repp'ing the late Murray Lerner's rushes via his estate. Clearly this is only one of the three cameras on stage that day.

    I was there!!!!!! Remember seeing joni mitchell acting rather 'strange', family arrrg, miles davis, bitches brew, emerson, lake and palmer, over the top, but impressive bombastic egotripping, PROCOL HARUM, starting with Paramounts tracks, nobody knew about the Paramounts in those days, fantastic set with b. j. Wilson in great shape, after which the Who had to revive everybody with their searchlights and Pete Townsend shouting 'WAKE UP'. The next morning, after seeing more and more hippies with the Saviour (aka jimi hendrix) in their eyes, I left, not knowing that my favorite rock genius(aka terry reid) would also play, a lifetime regret.

    Note the jazz grip.Priceless

    • @MrCherryJuice
      @MrCherryJuice 6 місяців тому

      The 'jazz grip' is actually from him playing marching snare in the Boys Brigade (the grip comes from centuries back, long before the arrival of the drum kit as we know it). I don't know if he ever played actual jazz, though many British drummers of that era played (old time) dance music, which is likely how he got so conversant with playing 3/4, 6/8 and 12/8 time signatures.
      Indeed, BJ and Jimmy Page were enlisted to record Joe Cocker's 'With a Little Help From My Friends' after Stevie Winwood and Traffic drummer Jim Capaldi failed to nail the feel after 32 takes.That tune is in 12/8, which is the sort of think Procol played often.

We were so blessed to be alive during this golden age of music , which often at the time passed by for mediocrity . Over 50 years later the magnitude of magnificence can at last be fully appreciated .

      I can give you some background information. So Historic Films has all of Murray Lerners Isle Of Wight footage but it's not all available at the moment. I found this bit of Procol Harum at the end of a reel containing video of the band family. I'm also trying to put together a complete video of family doing the weavers answer.

      Thanks for the info.! But you had to pay $100 for the footage? As a "pro" member?

    Best drummer ever in rock was BJ Wilson. Jimmy Page wanted him after Bonham died.

      Wrong, Page wanted him when he was forming LZ. BJ opted to stay with PH, then Jimmy got Bonham - not after Bonham died!!! Got proof?

      @@SirCamsmorethanalot Oh perhaps I;m wrong the point is BJ was a better drummer IMO. I've seen em both up close.

      After Stevie Winwood and Traffic drummer Jim Capaldi failed to nail the feel after 32 takes, Page and BJ were enlisted to record Joe Cocker's 'With a Little Help From My Friends'. That would have been around the time Page was attempting to assemble his new band. At the time there was him and Yardbirds rhythm guitarist/bassist Chris Dreja, though Dreja soon bowed out to pursue photography (he shot back cover of Zep's debut album), so Page didn't have much to entice anyone who already had a career on the roll, which is what BJ had.

      Did you ever see BJ live? I did? He was best English drummer of all time. And he smoked almost Americans too.He's the only drummer I've ever seen ( and I've seen the best live) thar really could play the traditional left hand grip w/ease and comfort. Absolutely the best trad left grip player of all time. And his brain knew music . Where to paly and where to not. And dynamics? The best as you might know Procol Harum played it all. God I love that band and drummer..

      He was probably just instructed to film shots from this one point on the stage, with other cameras filling in the rest.
