Yes, she's a one-dimensional player. She goes for winners all the time, and if they aren't going in, she doesn't adjust her aim to play a little safer. In essence, she beats herself, with too many unforced errors, and her opponents soon figured out how to exploit that.
That's not enough to explain a longterm trend, though, since she's always been like that, which begs the question why that same approach kept working early on but kept failing later. Did people figure out her game? Or did it change after all, voluntarily or not? The video suggests it deserted her due to injury, distraction and that confidence-sapping Wimbledon final loss.
I agree. I remember a match she played against Aga Radwanska (in Connecticut I believe), where Aga was winning comfortably and appeared to be cruising to victory until it got to match point, when Genie suddenly woke up and started playing as though every point mattered. Aga still won but she had to fight hard at the end to do it.
I would agree. She had talent but not the head for the game. When she was on (not often), everything seemed to work. When a change of strategy was required, she was lost and unwilling. However, that 6-8 months of fame made her an attraction. I'm guessing that she is not suffering financially. Tennis has served its purpose for her and I don't think we will see her on the courts again. Too bad! She is a treat for the eyes. Her tennis is not.
Why though? Because he appeared in a photo with her once? I don't get why everyone is saying that's so cool. I swear I"m not trying to be a dick but ppl are acting like this is the ending to scarface or something, but it's just "oh catch this, I've met her." Like, what is honestly the big deal?
When Genie was in interviews during that Grand Slam run and she would say ‘I work hard so I expect to win’, I knew the success had gone to her head. Great video!!
Finally, a complete video explaining why Bouchard failed in tennis. A lot of people were able to identify there was something really wrong with her tennis game ...because she was clearly very much into herself ....looking for her own publicity .....a very clear element of NARCISSISM that dominated over her tennis game. The public videos of her is evidence of this. For Bouchard ....she's all about her own appearance. She just happens to be able to play tennis ....but the looks are far more important to her. A major cause of the downfall is it didn't take too long for the tour to figure out her game and make adjustments. Once that happened, she never added anything to her style and stubbornly refused to change anything or alter anything to counter the opponents. When numerous coaches tried to get her to become more intelligent out there, she either "parted ways" with them or they got disgusted with her lack of flexibility and her know-it-all attitude. The truth is her game became ineffective quickly and once she started losing (the video is correct, it began way before the fall,) she lost the motivation to change and lacked the maturity of an adult to change her attitude. This all coincided with her emerging internet celebrity status which is much easier to manage than being a dedicated professional athlete. Genie is ranked #120 today on the computer and can't get into any event without qualifying or getting a wild card. Her credibility as an athlete has not been there for years. Those who say she'll make a resurgence as a serious tennis player are living a pipe-dream.

Ya know, I really get annoyed when ppl diss on Kournikova for her good looks and (comparative) lack of success on the singles circuit. Look at her doubles career, she legit was a really good player.
Thank you . She lacked the power for the singles . Fine player , had the type of doubles results that any player would love . Matter of fact her partner martina hingis switched from singles to doubles as well due to the power game . Anna gets a bad wrap because she really was a legit model as well . Stunning looks
As a Canadian who follows tennis closely, I am glad you mentioned the 2014 Wimbledon Final. At the start of that year, she was around 29th in the world, and buoyed by Genie's Army she had great confidence. But also had glaring weaknesses in her game notably her second serve and, as was mentioned, a single dimensionality to her game. Other top players had more tools and greater skills but commentators like Chris Everett felt she had great mental toughness which made up for her lackings. That final expose all her glaring weaknesses. I remember telling a friend my assessment of her was like this: Pretend there was a book called "How to Beat Genie Bouchard." At the start of the year, it was the size of a pamphlet--after Wimbledon, it was the size of Mitt Romney Binders. Every professional tennis player in the world watches that final. She was then required to overhaul her game. As for the mental toughness, it was easy to say when things we going so well. But mental toughness needs to kick in when things are going badly. Things were actually starting to go better for Genie a bit (I think she should be where this all started in the top 32 in the world) and then the stupid injury happened. Still, I wish her well.
To be fair though, that wasn't just Genie's fault - Petra was totally in the zone during that match. She would have beaten almost anybody with the possible exception of Serena.
She was just unable to keep up with the consistency that the game required. There must've been distractions outside of tennis which led to lack of motivation.

How about this for a plot twist: I played on a high school tennis team with him. He made the team when he was in 7th grade and he was always our best player. Now he works for Cliff Drysdale.
Wimbledon was the game changer. Other players and their coaches had figured out how to beat her. She had changed her game a little by New York but that was a devestating set back. Today, when push comes to shove, she goes back to her original style. Her confidence is also very fragile and confidence is a major factor in tennis. As a Canadian, I have been and still am fan of 'genie. She comes across as a very nice and normal person and I wish her the very best in life. Bb.
I'm not even into tennis hard core like that, but what got me to subscribe is the editing! Holy cow. I can imagine how long it takes to do these videos and the detail put into it. As a creator myself, my hat's off to you.
She slipped got concussion, isn't that an excuse, lawsuit against earnings liable for damages, her career ruined, accident affected her ability, focus was away from sport, her mindset doesn't help , her attitude not conducive to the tour🎾
Relies on her beauty, due to her injury, her style of play is a risk, if you play smart, you affect her confidence, a vicious cycle, her issues affects any future slams🎾
She had a meteoric run as an unknown playing an aggressive game and picking up the ball early, which is rare in the WTA and caught opponents off guard. She didn't really dominate. A slight drop in performance (and yes some bagel flameouts) + players getting used to her game had more to do with her struggles
You were too kind in this video. She had ONE good season and got caught up in her own hype. She was disrespectful to other players. Her game wasn't that great. And she's still losing in 1st rounds at 250 tournaments.
@@XPLAlN Some players all they need is one good season. Look at Andrescu. One year before winning her first grand slam she was in the 200# ranking. Within a year she won several big tournaments and then beating Serena in US Open Final. Having said that, maybe Andrescu is the next Bouchard. Now she trailing due to injury as well. Bottom line, there is a way (although very difficult and challenging) of coming back. UPDATE (Sep): So Emma Raducanu won the US Open. In June 2021 she was 358 ranked. Now in September, and by winning the Grand Slam as Qualifier, she is ranked 24. That is a lot of climbing up in just one season.

Kournikova was a top ranked doubles player and won a ton of doubles titles, including a couple grand slams. Her singles career never amounted to much but the two aren’t really the same
Kournikova won two GS doubles titles at the AO with Hingis. Hingis, on the other hand, won 20 doubles and mixed doubles GS titles. Save to say Hingis gave Kournikova two GS double titles...lol
I think it's pretty dope that you can show the ups and downs of people in tennis and be respected for even showing some of the not so pretty sides but be respected by the subject like Donald and Genie
Like you said in the beginning, its incredibly hard to be a professional athlete even more so for the individial sport athletes like tennis, golf, running, swimming...... Its all on you. Back spasm, pulled muscle, roll an ankle, you're out and the cash stops flowing( except endorsements ). Based on your video, she had single focus for the 1st 20yrs of her life and who can blame someone for wanting to do something different. If healthy, she will make it back if she wants to, she already did, she knows what it takes. The Jennifer Capriati story is the best comeback story ever in all of sports. If you haven't seen it, its a must watch.
Anna Kournikova is a former #1 in Doubles w 2 GS titles, she was battling herniated discs, stress fractured toes, etc. + her controlling mother. She is far from a “burnout has been”
Every one who knows a little bit about tennis has seen Genie's game pretty well: she has no plan B, only knows to hit hard and when she lacks confidence she crumbles. I have long given up on her come back and was not surprised about what I saw at the last Guadalajara Open when she yet again collapsed in the 2nd set of a WTA final. She will always be the pretty girl who coulda, shoulda woulda.. PS: Kournikova at least had an extremely successful doubles career with non other than Hingis.
The key to the whole downfall I think is her high-pressure upbringing, her parents divorce, being separated at an early age from her family, called The Chosen One so early. Sounds like an insane situation she grew up in and had no childhood. All tennis all the time. I'm sure the outside attention was what she always wanted; a chance to let her hair down and have fun for once, have a life outside of tennis. Can't really blame her from what sounds like an unhealthy grooming to be a tennis player from the age of 3! I kinda see her like Anna Kournikova. I remember seeing Kournikova's mom always at her matches and seeing the pressure to play tennis she had so early on. The outside stuff and attention she got seemed a welcome relief from all that pressure. I'm sure Kournikova is happy with how her life turned out. Genie will be good no matter what happens I think. She's already a success by getting out of a pressure packed tennis tennis tennis life and finding other ways to make income.
Sharapova could have easily gone the Kournikova way. But her eyes were always on the prize. That's the role model every good looking female athlete should look upto. 👌
Wouldn't you be as well? Instead of having to wake up, sweat and toil to improve, all she has to do now is just take her clothes off and smile. No brainer unless you really have a champions drive.

I think the British press have put her on a pedestal...but..when she trengresses (well in their eyes)...they destroy her...shes possibly not as good as she's been made out to be..
Apart from the obvious (injuries etc), the answer to 'what happened to X' is always distraction. Rickie Fowler in golf, Brain Shaw in strongman, Genie... we mortals wonder why someone dropped out of the rankings when the miracle was that they got there in the first place. As Mike Tyson said, you have to sacrifice happiness to be the best in the world at anything. The sacrifice is immense, and a side-career as a model or media personality (so called "influencer") is tempting.
I still remember Sharapova appearing on Letterman, and then losing the next match at the US Open. Success at a young age has many pitfalls, and it's easy to see how these players can lose focus. It takes a professional team to keep them focused on their sport of choice. At this level, there's a very small window to succeed, and if you miss it, then it's gone forever. I still remember her run at Wimbledon, and telling my friends how good she was - it was the first time I had seen her play. Given the current talent in the WTA, I don't see her making an impact on the game. As a fan, I wish I could be more optimistic, but hope has now given way to reality.
I was one of those Genie haters too. Then at one of the big tournaments I saw Genie turn around from a crowd, without any camera's around to sign and talk to a kid with Downs Syndrome, that was a very classy gesture. I think she can win many hearts when she realizes some things are bigger than the game.
He never was able to translate success on the Junior circuit to the pro circuit to begin with unfortunately. There hasn't really been any top level men's players since the 90s from America apart from Roddick. Would love to see that change. I feel like the era of Courier, Chang, Sampras, and Agassi was the last era that American Men were great.
@@eghosaswordontennis7521 Tiafoe is solid, but he has been a step or 2 below some of the other top players at his age. Korda, I haven't see much of yet, though he has been getting some good results this season. Hopefully, he can break out!
Sad to see what happened with her career as a player, I was rooting for her around those years with her high energy and enthusiasm while playing, which gave joy, ultimately outside pressures were too strong. I hope she makes some strides and returns to her peak, don’t think so but let’s hope
Music careers can last for a while if the talent is genuine (like Janet Jackson) but youthful looks unfortunately short women's careers often a lot if that's what people were invested in
I'm not sure it sucks for Bouchard. She's made a lot of money from modeling. Billie Jean King once said about Anna Kournikova, "She has to decide. How great of a tennis player does she want to be, or how much money does she want to make?"
Strong analysis. The Kivitova beat-down was humiliating and the spotlight was blinding at that time. Sport can be cruel and it would be hard to resist the world of celebrity, notoriety, and easy money outside of tennis after that set- back.
Loving the channel, can I suggest a 2 part series on Borg on top of the world, and what happened after his lose in the US open. Another idea is doing a video on the year 1988, and how Steffi Graff had the greatest year's of any tennis player.... 4 grand slams and a Gold medal... no other player in history has done this. Keep up the great work.
After watching this I just felt really f**king sad for her. It ain't about fame, injury or playing style. People with traumatic childhoods frequently fill the holes it leaves with whatever they can get to numb the pain.
Definitely wasn't the most recognisable tennis player, nor was she the most popular athlete in the world at any point. That kind of aggrandisement sort of ruins some of the other factual realities of the video and is unnecessary.
Totally agree. When he said that at one point, she was the most popular athlete in the world, he almost lost me. To make that claim -- regardless of your involvement with her -- is just asinine.
@@murph165 True, then again it always makes me laugh to hear an American talk about being the best in the world in any sport.. since they make up their own sports to be able to dominate in them.
@@erikstigter7897 The discussion was about whether Bouchard was the most popular athlete in the world -- as this clip claimed. You went off the rails, kid.
The beginning of the end for Genie was playing at the Rogers Cup in her home town of Montreal shortly after her appearance in the final at Wimbledon. She basically had a mental breakdown, crying and telling her coach that she wanted to leave, during a match against a relative unknown and was never the same player.
@bigray1999 No. Check her history. The Rogers Cup (Canadian Open) comes before the US open. She had a mental breakdown, right on the court, playing in Montreal. Her shower fall at the US just gave her an excuse for her terrible play.
@bigray1999 Her results were already crumbling before the slip and fall in the locker room at the 2015 USO. Since her QF run at the 2015 AO, she had lost 16 of 21 match entering the USO. So it's not like she was in great form. And then, add to the fact that her results never really improved after recovering from the concussion. And she's had a plethora of coaches. Many of which tried to help her add more consistency to her game learn to build points. But she was too stubborn to change. She wants to pull the trigger early on in points, when she is not in good position to do so. As Petra showed in the Wimbledon final, if a player can get the ball on her before she gets set and get the ball out of her strike zone with the way her stroke production is, they can draw errors and weak replies.
she needs to play more...she now not entered any tournament for one and half month...she never be top player again...but if she works hard..she deffo has a chance be good top 30-50 player
Please don't equate/compare Bouchard to Anna Kournikova. Kournikova's career was derailed by injuries and she had to retire in her early 20s. Many players dont even reach their tennis prime until after that so who knows what would've have happened if Kournikova was able to continue playing. Also, Kournikova had much success in doubles and was even ranked number 1 which makes the comparison all the more unfair.

From the very beginning when she was experiencing success she had a real attitude problem. Her ego was bigger than her game. I remember her making multiple comments that were condescending to the other players, or how great she thought she was. I personally celebrated her downfall. Let her story be a cautionary tale about letting one's ego get in the way of real success. Maybe now she's older and wiser, and let's hope humbler as she attempts for a comeback....
Mortgaged by her dad, moved to a different country, separated from her TWIN SISTER...all before her teen years...that's a lot for anyone deal with. Social media and the concussion were probably just the cherry on top.
His analysis of Genies game is spot on .Big hitters can often rely so much on power they neglect to master the subtlties of the game .I hope Iga is not another one in that mould .Having said all yhat I am willing Genie on .I followed her as she progressed in a tournament in Mexico I think it was earlier this year .She went all the way to the final .I sincerely hope she can build on that as her many fans have never forgotten her
Even up until 2019, Genie was still popular in Canada. I saw her play against Bianca in Toronto at the Rogers Cup, that year and she was still the fan favourite during that match. This is obviously before Bianca won the tournament and the US Open later that year, so I imagine things would be different now. Still, I hope Genie can make a comeback!
@@CULTTENNIS he right though. Your research, knowledge of tennis, editing, and overall passion really make this the best tennis channel. It is approachable yet very knowledgeable.
I saw her practice at the US Open in 2017 and was underwhelmed. Her shots had no power and neither did her serve. I play against women in my local comp who hit bigger and serve bigger than she was during that session. I don't see her making a comeback.
She always had a poor service game, that was her biggest flaw. Her 2nd serve in particular started to get torn apart. She probably overachieved, which is absolutely to her credit, but as the video mentioned she plays high risk and relies completely on confidence, but once that’s broken she has no answers. That fall at the US Open probably saved her from embarrassment on the court in the long term. In the end she has made a great success of herself, and she’s still trying to play despite injuries and surgeries, so kudos to her, because she doesn’t have to. But unfortunately the height of her career has surely passed.
I think the biggest example of managing fame, one’s personal life and a stellar goat career is Rafa who surreptitiously did not feature on this video when talking about how not to let fame get to your head . I mean you can be a Fedole fan but when giving an impartial analysis you must include leading examples such as Rafa. It begins with mindset and you didn’t touch upon her super absorbed narcissistic one. Laura Robson is one of the nicest wta players whose career was stolen from her with countless surgeries related to injuries . At one point they were BFFs, genie lived with Laura , and all of a sudden that friendship staled. She had so much venom for Maria but that didn’t stop her from copying her. She’s just a lying self absorbed version of moaning markle, always in it for the money. Tennis is not exactly a contact sport like American football / rugby that a concussion leads to death. A bathroom slip does not take away from talent. She was in it for the money and fame and the only way she could stay relevant was to sashay her booty in our faces . Felix seems normal but unlike real life regular Canadians , tennis Canadians are full of themselves - Pospisil, Bouchard etc it’s like their good looks and money infantilises them to any self responsibility. I have a problem with people who disrespect the sport I love . So it isn’t about ranking . Petkovic hardly ever wins anything , but she’s loved by all. Ranking isn’t everything, wins fade away , but who you are as a person stays on with fans for the longest time . GB will not be remembered.
In that case... What about Djokovic, who is literally a "godlike" figure in Serbia? Despite being the greatest athlete Spain ever produced, not even Nadal has that status in his home country. If anything I am not discrediting Nadal, I think Djokovic also deserves a mention of how to balance a professional career with personal and national stardom.
At 27 years old, I just don't see a turn around happening. I really like her play style a lot. I just wish that she didn't make so many bad choices in her personal life. If I were her, I would shut off social media and produce. She is clearly a hard worker and talented player.
Me neither. The last player to completely turn her career around was Jennifer Capriati, and she did it when she was about 25. Even that didn't last very long. But with Capriati, we have always known that she is a grand slam material when she won the Olympics at the tender age of 16 by defeating the mighty Steffi Graf. Bouchard on the other hand played some good tennis in 2014, and that's the highest point of her career.

Plus once she had some success she fired her coach and her game went down hill right away
Recent publicity, Sept 2022 proves this out.

Wimbledon was the game changer. Other players and their coaches had figured out how to beat her. She had changed her game a little by New York but that was a devestating set back. Today, when push comes to shove, she goes back to her original style. Her confidence is also very fragile and confidence is a major factor in tennis. Relies on her beauty, due to her injury, her style of play is a risk, if you play smart, you affect her confidence, a vicious cycle, her issues affects any future slams🎾
Wtf? He was in a photo with her….so what?
She had a meteoric run as an unknown playing an aggressive game and picking up the ball early, which is rare in the WTA and caught opponents off guard. She didn't really dominate. A slight drop in performance (and yes some bagel flameouts) + players getting used to her game had more to do with her struggles
You were too kind in this video. She had ONE good season and got caught up in her own hype. She was disrespectful to other players. Her game wasn't that great. And she's still losing in 1st rounds at 250 tournaments.
Exactly
Spot on. I am confident she will not trouble the top 10 ever again. They have moved on, she won't catch up.

Kournikova won two GS doubles titles at the AO with Hingis.
Hingis, on the other hand, won 20 doubles and mixed doubles GS titles.

Based on your video, she had single focus for the 1st 20yrs of her life and who can blame someone for wanting to do something different. @@Kraftymark no, the politics played her life.

Strong analysis. The Kivitova beat-down was humiliating and the spotlight was blinding at that time. Sport can be cruel and it would be hard to resist the world of celebrity, notoriety, and easy money outside of tennis after that set- back.

"Maria, I'm sorry" might be a start to turn things positive
The beginning of the end for Genie was playing at the Rogers Cup in her home town of Montreal shortly after her appearance in the final at Wimbledon. She basically had a mental breakdown, crying and telling her coach that she wanted to leave, during a match against a relative unknown and was never the same player.
@bigray1999 No. Check her history. The Rogers Cup (Canadian Open) comes before the US open. She had a mental breakdown, right on the court, playing in Montreal. Her shower fall at the US just gave her an excuse for her terrible play.
@bigray1999 I guess we have a different opinion on the word successful.
It's sad that even though Genie has reached two WTA finals in the last months, the revised ranking system doesn't let her move up the rankings.
she needs to play more...she now not entered any tournament for one and half month...she never be top player again...but if she works hard..she deffo has a chance be good top 30-50 player
That ending. Mind if you elaborate? 👀
The up down up down doubles
I gotta hand it to you. You know how to end a video. I hope there's a sequel.

I really like her aggressive style of playing. Wish she could recover and get back to where she was soon. BTW, both of you are extremely good-looking.

Now that’s something worth looking into
Another great video :)
@@briangmoh5261 Maybe she isnt looking to be a grand slam champion anymore and is in it for the career long hall. Either way, I hope that she finds her game again.

I was at the mixed doubles match at the US Open that she played before she slipped. Never imagined what was to come.
Yup, she went the Kournikova route. And the only coach who could get through to her was Saviano. The word after that was "stubborn and uncoachable". I first saw her play at the National Tennis Center (indoors tournament) when she was 8.
I agree about Saviano. Even at the time when she fired him right after her great year I remember thinking that was a bad move.
Standing up and seeing your Video means getting out of bed has to wait for 11:27
She did not compare herself to Serena……… Hold on, I have to go laugh hysterically for an hour. BRB
4:52 Canada's greatest and the most humble athlete to ever compete, Georges St. Pierre. She could've learnt one or two about, how not to allow success ruin your career from the zen master himself.
Just found your channel, SO EXCITED!!! LOVE this video & your content! You totally could make a series "Career ruined by fame"! You should include Anna Kournikova:)
I have some sympathy for her with that hot-housed upbringing. But I think that the Fed Cup non-handshake incident speaks volumes about her attitude to the game and other players. Her hubris and model looks have led to her current ranking
The only interesting "cliffhanger" ending is after verbally eviscerating Bouchard for most of his "concerned," hypothesizing over the reasons for her downfall; he lets us know of Special Connection they supposedly share.
With friends like that, you know the rest.
Wait this was only just uploaded? I didn't even notice, and I'm 3 minutes in lol
