    After watching these two videos, it makes me realize I know little to nothing about this kind of stuff. The way he just knows what to do most of the time is pretty mind blowing. Great Work!

    This week, Ben completes his portable #RaspberryPi build in part two of this series. He wires everything up in a cool new 3D printed case. And element14 gives you a chance to win this very device! Details of the contest in the video description.

    should've given it a proper d-pad. Honestly, if you're playing 2d games an analog stick can be a hinderance.

    • @wpwentzell

      Arcades (MAME) usually had a joystick, so this was actually more true to form. However, I agree that for thumb movement, D-Pad is probably better.

    Kids love video games this would be a good way to teach them about electronics and design if this was a kit. Wonderful video makes me want to try it out .
    The screen that you have int his project where can I get my hands on one? I am trying to make an external box for my old stereo. However the touchscreen that I purchased from another place can only be used with Wheezy Raspbian. I want to be able to switch from HDMI and back to the screen. Can you please help?

    • @FlameSoulis
      @FlameSoulis 10 років тому

      Just search up 'Car Monitors' or 'Mini LCD' on eBay. They are typically around $10 and if you don't mind getting dirty, you CAN power some of the smaller screens with 5v if you remove the internal voltage regulator. That'd make the project easier since you'd only need a simple USB Backup Battery to power the entire project.

    • @Totogita
      @Totogita 10 років тому

      Thanks for the tip I already got the LCD screen. When I tried the games though some of the emulators were very slow.

    • @FlameSoulis
      @FlameSoulis 10 років тому

      Dart Gar You may need to not start X Windows (the graphical interface). That uses up quite a bit of resources. You can also give a small overclock to the Pi and that would boost performance. I have found SNES games run fine to a degree on a per game basis. Games like Megaman X run perfectly with slight overclock and games like Mario Cart have tiny issues on some tracks.

      @mario4everd 8 років тому

      +Creeperzone221 ??? how, the wii u gamepad has a touch interface with both extremely high quality analog sticks and dpad. The controller itself is light for it's size and decently durable. It also has clickable analog sticks and all the standard buttons for a usual console gaming system. Plus the screen size is a perfect size for widescreen supported games. You can also hack the wii side of the wii u to play any iso gamecube games that you want. You can technically make it into the ultimate nintendo machine..

    • @creeperzone2215
      @creeperzone2215 8 років тому

      it was a damn joke...

    • @mario4everd
      @mario4everd 8 років тому

      Creeperzone221 I knew that XD but I still wanted to point out how the thing can be a weird semi portable system. You can play the wii side just of the gamepad and any wii u games that support off screen play. Since when you hack the wii the games still display on the gamepad as all it does is mirror the wii mode. *^*

    Hey Ben, Glad to see you are playing around with making smaller form factor projects. I always wondered why your projects tended to be a bit bulkier. Have you ever thought about using flat lithium ion Batteries in your portables? I noticed you opted for an internal battery for this project! I think you could make your projects more compact if you did more with flat cell batteries such as what is used in most consumer products.

  • @ThePokeman92

    How long did the battery last on this build when playing games? I know I can get a few hours out of a 5600mAh battery with my Pi, but that's excluding a screen and including all the components you removed to save power.

  • @Tenocticatl
    @Tenocticatl 11 років тому

    I'm trying to do something similar, but without computer-controlled tools (cnc, laser cutter, 3d printer). Figure out exactly what you want it to do first, then see if you can get the parts for it. Pick a layout, and remember to pick something you can actually make (I'll most likely use some existing box, triplex and a jigsaw, so that narrows the options). In last week's episode, he discusses the other parts he used; mine are pretty similar. Look online for other people who've done similar!

    I'm pretty much a "newbie", needed a hobby to keep me occupied while recovering from stage 4 throat cancer, and beat it. Now trying to keep myself occupied as I recover. Love this project, like most of your others. You explain it in a way so as not to talk down to us, but instead talk to us. It makes a world of difference. I digress, sorry, my question is: can you use the gray ribbon from a pc, cut to width/length needed? Don't want to throw it out if I may need it for a project sometime soon. Thanks for the inspiring tutorials. I've ordered many supplies to begin "making", the essentials needed. Very excited to see what I can make.

    The Raspberry PI is a credit card size micro computer that is versatile enough to do everything from minor media playback to complex projects like RC vehicles and it is very cheap to boot. The creators of the PI wanted a way to inspire young adults to be interested in programing and I feel they have done just that. Plus with it running Linux OS it is by far one of the best ways to allow open source software so that it is easy to practice programing. I believe that they start at $35 US.

  • @Willielikesmonkeys
    @Willielikesmonkeys 11 років тому +1

    @Prince Vegeta You can always plug a wireless dongle into that USB port, and no since the Pi is ARM based (what's inside mobile phones) and Steam only works on x86 (what's inside desktops). And to be quite frank if you could compile Steam for arm, you wouldn't want to. It just wasn't built to render in 3d and games themselves are written for x86. Overall though as long as you can find someone with a 3d printer it's under $120. (Pi is 30-55 USD and LCD is ~40 USD, everything else can be bought online for less than 10 USD with the battery being the next most expensive depending on how much you're willing to spend.)

    An old project I know but thus far one of the nicest version of the handheld-retro-gaming setups. I'd like to see this project updated with a Pi3.
    Here are my thoughts
    Pi 3
    All Ports left intact - if possible.
    DC Power (Charge can use at the same time)
    HDMI free to use to plug into a TV
    On system screen 640x480 or 800x480... maybe 5"
    micro SD card access
    Buttons (shoulder buttons, for sure ) and maybe two more action buttons (6 button like the old sega controllers?)
    Battery hatch to get in and replay battery pack. (or maybe use rechargeable AA?)
    Case design still pretty similar but maybe a hair bigger/thicker to allow for the usb/ethernet ports access. Maybe a GBA style enclosure?
    They idea is a portable system that can be docked for use as a console.

    Hey Ben, what did you do to prevent overcharging your battery pack?

    THIS IS AMAZING!
    Please tell me how much you put into that. I really want to make my own.

      I've got one coming for free because of an English competition. I really want a screen like that.

    Interesting. I know there are a lot of videos showcasing various Nintendo64 and Gamecube portables on UA-cam. Most aren't great (one actually used a Nintendo64 console as the case for the "portable" >.
