Great video! I was wondering; when you make these videos, you're obviously filming in real time as you make these projects. Did you practice making a couple of these before making the video? I just know that if I was doing a video like this, it would feature me messing up about a million things lol.
Hey, I've watched both parts of your Gameboy build, and i think this is super awesome, and i was wondering if it was possible to do something even more awesome: making gameboy-like cartridges to put into the Gameboy Zero so that it'll play those games, giving you the ability to create custom games without getting sued for creating a game for a console you don't have licenses to create games for or something. This could take things to a whole new level were people can make their own consoles completely, from hardware and looks to game design! This could be a good idea for a video where you explain exactly how a normal console would work and stuff.
wermy I want Nintendo to make a remake ok the gameboy
wermy Project idea
Maybe you can make a game console that uses HDMI and has a controller you use. Many people have probably done this but I want to see the master do it 😃
Kenneth Fleming I think that is possible my idea is to get a SD card reader hooked up and get a 2 - 5 GB SD card per game (depending on ROM size)
Or replace the SD card usb drive if the raspberry Pi could read it but you would need a usb port so a lot of modification.
Edit: I didn't watch part 2 now I did but it is possible you need a lot of coding to make a custom game.
I love watching these type of videos, even if I don't know anything about electronics. It's like watching a surgery operation, only without the blood and the grossness
I like to see people bleed.
CadetRedruM21 whatever flows your boat, mate
thanks for not judging
me too i would like to learn but then I'm like where could i start and it looks complicated too
Study engineering, then pick electronic route.
Dropped in to say that this video tutorial is excellent. The filming and camera angles are perfect, the voiced instructions are very clear and easy to understand with references to other videos and guides, the "boring" parts are sped up, and to top it off; the music was a great fit that was faded in and out at the right times. Well done!
Out of all of the tutorials I have seen yours are by far the easiest to follow. Can't wait to see how this turns our!
you should collect all the parts and sell them as bundle "make your own nintendo"
They did
Nintendo would sue this man
I would build/restore my own but my parents a stuck up cunts and wont let me because then ill "be owning a videogame and ill get addicted and shoot up a school and join isis" or something along those lines
@@lagumlemoni331 they say that but what I’ve learned is that when you major in computer science concentrating in game design they’re like “wow so amazing” like as if it’s so different 😂
Genius idea!
Wermy, you legend! All your hard work and super clear explanations have helped me create my own gameboy pi3! Thank you. I'll be showing off my build on the forum soon.
Nice! :)
Thanks so much! Built one over the weekend with my mom, you know I gotta give that thumbs up. If you know what you’re doing it’s easy, just a bit of a long process
This is an amazing build. I am going to try to make a variation of this myself as a groomsman gift at my wedding. Thanks!
Matthew Nattress how did it go?
You really went all out on this. It's really great to see. I'm an amateur at repairing and rehousing consoles - so far I've repaired a GBASP, a GBC and a DSL , and I've rehoused a GBASP and 2 GBC's. I have the parts for/will be rehoming a GBASP, a DS, and a DSL. I really love what you did here. Maybe one day I can be as good as you.
For better sound quality, use 1uF capacitors instead of resistors. The capacitors will prevent the stereo channels from backfeeding into each other and causing distortion. Using resistors only is bad because it just lowers the volume of the audio. Using an inductor/ferrite bead is even worse because it acts like an RF choke and further reduces volume and adds distortion.
If you find the volume is too loud with 1uF capacitors, you can add a single resistor after them to reduce the volume. You can also experiment with the value of the capacitor, lower and higher values will change the frequency cutoff. So you can reduce the lows or highs or keep it somewhere in the middle.
GGigabiteM hmm. Never heard of that. Sounds like it’ll work though.
GGigabiteM Thanks for the info, I am currently doing this project. What max voltage should I choose?
Aw damn, I saw this in my suggested videos and was hyped to watch part two, then checked your channel and saw that this was just uploaded :P looks like you got a new sub
cool guide. I might just have to try making one of these when I get better at soldering
Great video and thanks for answering my question I asked you a month ago about using a DS Lite cartridge reader slot.
Heh, sorry I must have missed it before, but glad I answered it for you. :)
+wermy It's alright thanks though it's good news for me
4:45 Savage... no wonder you've broken lcds before. Next time blast it with hot air for 30-45 sec and it'll come apart with no force.
UR THE NEXT
I've seen this video like 5 times already can't wait for part 2
the dream of every late 90s kids :D
or just maybe for those who love old stuff :∆
Khoa Nguyễn i am from 03 but i want to do this. its awesome😍
rmn Same, but I’m from 04’ so I probably won’t be doing it, but might start buying retro consoles.
2002 😀
Early 90s here and I'd enjoy having one of these.
This is so awesome. From all the amazing work it's almost it's own open source project! I actually wish that the community would take all these parts and come up with a few different 3d printable case designs. The DMG-01 is nice but it would be cool if we had a few different case options that were compatible with these parts.. Mainly something that would more easily accommodate shoulder buttons and perhaps 3DS style analog sticks. Maybe based on the GBA case. Either way this is SUPER awesome :)
awesome!! can't wait for for the next episode! I like this approach.. destroying a gameboy makes me sick haha
Amazingly detailed, simple to understand and very intuitive explaining.
You made me want to make a Raspberry Pi Gameboy now!
I really wanted you to show how to do this with the Raspberry Pi 3 too.
You cant it's to big
He should have included the headphone jack onto the all in one board :)
There's not much support for it there, and you'd most likely end up cracking the board if you dropped the gbz, or were rough with it. Having an external jack is perfect. if you mess up the jack, you can just easily replace it.
The new board does include the jack sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1426
Oh SNAP!
+Omega52 does that board work with rpi 3 ?
ye
i love how there are communities keeping retro games alive by building their own gaming systems and sharing them online and i wanted to build a raspberry pi 0 Gameboy but since i was only gonna play gba titles i just bought a used gba their cheaper and feel more real
amazing project dude and thanks for share the list of parts
The twin AV inputs thing is standard for backup cameras, it allows you to connect your car stereo to input 1 for default display, and then as soon as your backup camera turns on and puts signal on input 2 it overrides.
The best guide EVER i just buy my pi zero, how much cost every part if i are not form the USA?
Hey thanks! I'm not sure on the cost for wherever you are located, and that's part of the reason I didn't include exact prices for everything: it will likely vary wildly depending on where you are located and where you are able to buy from. Good luck! :)
Thanks for answering! :) You're right, I found the case in a lot of colors by us $10 here goo.gl/FKqps2 but how much money you spend in one of this?
My case was $10 as well. Nice selection of colors there! Shame it doesn't have the logo on it.
It have logo but Aliexpress censore it, when it deliver to you comes with logo :D
I ask for all things tath you sow at the first of the video wermy
I bought mine on Aliexpress (grey) but even if the picture doesn't show a logo, there is actually one :-) There was the button included aswell and I paid around 7€
thank god. looking forward to this
I got busy and never got to finish the one I had started. Man has this gotten a lot simpler! I'm almost tempted to start over again :P
is it weird that i watch the entirety of the 2 episodes for fun
Everyone does it
I don't know why I watch this video, but it's a nice guide. Waiting for the next part!
UA-cam:
2016:No
2017:No
2018:No
2019: yeah let’s show this badboy to everyone
I really really appreciate your effort in making this video. This is something I've come to think I can accomplish and would like to try. It's all too amazing.
I've watched very gameboy zero video but i still don't understand what parts are essential, and what parts I should get, But still have a decent emulator. But no video, goes into detail on the wiring and how a beginner could do it because I have little knowledge on this craft.
you found anything?
I'm so excited this tutorial is happening! I'm hoping to make a custom build GBZ as my first foray into soldering
Why people are making gaming pcs when they can make gaming game boys
Are there non-gaming game boys?
@@MishoIV Not that I know of, LOL!
@@Mikey109105 Now I realized that youtuber LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER was building machine for making sounds from gameboys, theoretically that could be considered non-gaming gameboy.
Simply, AMAZING! Congrats on this man. Can't wait to get my hands on all this custom parts and build my own.
I wonder why no one uses after market GBA SP cases for builds.
Cause they are really small probably, not a lot of room for hardware.
Johnny Torpedo Perhaps the Pi ports don't line up with the SP's ports on the back.
I saw one video on here of one someone did and it looked pretty bad because they cut out the back of the screen so parts of the controller board would fit
Theyd be too small to fit a decent sized battery. The Pi, screen and Teensy board draw around 300 to 400ma (varies depending on the Pi's workload). Plus, some extra current is wasted in the step up power converter, therefore the battery needs to be at least 2000maH in capacity, whcih generally won't fit an SP case along side the extra components. You get a decent amount of play time with at least 2000maH. I get about 3 hours with my build.
Because this was our first Gameboy.
Hot glue noooonooooo! Hope it holds up. I used hot glue only to hold the parts to superglue it in. Then remove the hot glue and apply superglue on that side where you had the hot glue. Awesome vid keep it going 👍👍👍
Can you do a version with 2 buttons and no shoulder buttons? I want a gameboy classic to be like the original
I built one of these after watching your other videos. I used mostly everything you have here except I used a modified (cut) Pi B+ and I don't have that cartridge sd reader. My cartridge is glued in place and hollowed out for space. Thanks for the inspiration
How much did all the the parts cost?
A lot I guess...?
150-200
@@skreppe that isn't that bad tbh if you want a og game boy depends what type you don't get a clear picture.
1 2 102p9382891937267272874638298373?????
guys dont do this. you are waisting time and money. just download Happy Chick Apk from Xiaoji Website. and play Old and New Games on your Android. for free. games like Mario, Pokemon, Zelda, WWE, God of War, Grand Theft Auto and More. play Systems like, Gameboy, PSP, PlayStation, DreamCast and Way more. be smart. not stupid.
I'm just starting my build with aftermarket parts, this is exactly what I was after. I'm still waiting on my screen, case and button pcb so pretty much the core of the build lol. I need to jump on the market at 8pm (BST) tomorrow to secure my PCB.
This thing really needs a better monitor, with some kinda digital connection. That monitor is composite only so the image is gonna be really rough...
That's the thing, I don't know. I guess they don't make monitors with digital inputs this small...
could use a phone screen of some variety
CarSuck can buy mini hdmi 3 to 7 inch LCD screens
Keep up the great work man! This is the best guide! Looking forward to the following parts to see if I can actually get to build my own.
and the parte 2??? i want it! plis!
Working on it! Had a few minor setbacks but it will be some time this week. :)
cool
cool
cool
cool
I would love to have this when you're done!
Does the all in one board come with the screws you use in 10:07?
Like the helping hands! :-) this is what I call a gameboy build from scratch unlike other so-called mod build/click baits! Way to go bro! Cool info!
Will this have stereo 3.5 mm jack output? I'm trying to figure out how it would work. Also, if you can, could you show how to do it with a stereo amp instead of the GBZ AIO?
FYI, use a hair dryer on the screen to remove the adhesive. A hot air station is what I use of course but hey, I'm assuming you don't generally have a nice workstation like that and a hair dryer will be fine.
Also, use a knife(to remove the old) and then some 3m double sided adhesive, it'll work a lot better than hot snot and you won't need a bracket. Hot snot should generally never be used unless it's to tack a wire down when building electronics.
What exactly is a Gameboy Zero? I love gameboy and want to build one. Also what is Raspberry Pi Zero? is it that "$5 computer"???
It's actually an original gameboy case. Yes its the $5 computer. Theres a full writeup in the desc
Me its a circuit board named after fruit, fool. What you think?
🤦🏻♂️
I know the 0 w is $10 but I don't know how much the original 0 is
Its a device for emulating games, made to look like a gameboy. Its using raspberry pi, which is the 5usd computer, and it runs retropie which can emulate a lot of systems
Very suscinct, well documented, and well made. Kick ass dude, I'll probably be building one of these sooner than later.
Total cost?
I love you
Mucho
Awesome love watching your how to guides on the game boy zero this version looks a lot easier than your other video keep up the game work. Wish I could build a game boy zero myself not very good with all the little components and soldering wires together.
would this work with a raspberry pi zero w?
I love how no one replied
I learned how to work with electronics with these kind of videos
When is the next video coming out?
Working on it! :) Small update about it here: bit.ly/2cMddZx
Black with a hint of green I LOVE IT
No interest in building this, just LOVE watching lmao
Daniel Flocco hahaha same it's expensive
I can't believe they it is hard to find one with hdmi out. I'd rather buy one premade than make one. It's nice to watch your video. You are very talented.
What is the build cost and could I get all the items shipped to the UK?
Finding some adafruit parts are difficult as they are sold out in many places. Google is your friend. Cost (I found) is around £100-£150 depending. I did buy an overpriced job lot of 3 broken gameboys.
I'm up to £60.72 but didn't need the headphone jack, battery, sd card or usb breakout board. Still require a AIO PCB at $35 plus shipping so I reckon I can get it done for under £100. I'll post my links on the forums.
beermanuk did you manage to get a post going on sudomod forums for UK prices for builds? Maybe one thread dedicated to UK parts?
+beermanuk got the links yet,?
Andy Marsh don't buy from adafruit. They're expensive as hell. Just buy the parts from eBay or similar unless you really really like paying exponentially more to support strangers that likely wouldn't do the same for you...
Good job at keeping the music at a good volume.
is it possible to use the RPi3 instead of the RPZero?
MusicBeat Yea I was able to do that fine!
wcvikingdude i know this is late, but you were able to fit everything inside? i couldn't seem to do it.
RELIC_Ruby I've been doing some research on using a RPi3, I don't know what you've seen or figured out within the last 4 weeks, but its possible to use a RPi3, but you would have to mod it and basically take off the bulky parts such as the USB ports and so on... I found a guy who did this with a gameboy pocket... this is a link to that site:
www.xodustech.com/projects/raspberry-pi-gameboy-pocket
Zak Orlando ok thanks for the info!
I've never had a reason to get into soldering, until I saw this video. But I don't know where to start xD
The Art of War isn't from that album xD
thing is chipzel does good shit :v
iTunes says otherwise! :) It's included on Spectra on there.
lemme check if apple is dumb again
yeah it is
bandcamp dumb :v
Spotify shows it as on that album too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
awesome so far! this is one of a few videos youtube has suggested that I like. most of them are worthless, keep it up sir!
where is the 2 part?
Aiming for tomorrow!
can I watch Netflix on this?
GrimaceBSX i dont see why he couldnt put a chromecast device in it.
GrimaceBSX should be able to, if you plug in a wifi adapter and keyboard with usb
yeah, if you use another operating system and put a wifi dongle
Doesn't the zero W have wifi?
GrimaceBSX gda
looking forward to seeing the other guides! I've used a pi2 to make my frankenboy but it's a lot lot messier
Is there a deal online for all the part for one so I don't have to buy them all individually?
Comic n' Stuff probably not with quality stuff
Really sick vid. Gives me the idea I could actually build this. Cant wait for part 2!
OMG! When is part two coming? I'm on the edge of my seat here
Working on it! Had a few minor setbacks but it will be some time this week. :)
Yesssssss!!! i was hoping you would make a new guide with all the parts people have made (:
Great video Wermy, I am working on putting a Raspberry Pi Zero into a tricorder, these videos have helped me so much!!
Good on you for not destroying original hardware!
Wow, Wermy!!! This looks incredible.
this is awesome i like the ideas this guy is pursuing i recently repaired an original Game Boy
You should acetone weld the button holders onto the case for longer lasting bonds.
thank you again for your good work, love the button molds and screw bracket i got
what gauge is your usb wire? i have 24g ethernet cable lying around and i dont know if that would be good enough for this updated build.
Thanks for sharing! Can't wait for the 2nd part.
You are a legend. Will definitely be making one soon.
I love this! Thank you for posting! Looking forward to the second video!
I want one of these so bad, gonna have to invest in all the tools and such soon
Well done for doing this series of tutorials! They are much needed! I have made a Gameboy Colour Pi but the two halves of the case barely fit together. Any way, I've spent too much time on it to actually take it out anyway and play with it because I think I'll lose it!
Then why did you build it? You probably spent a lot of money to build it so you might as well (CAREFULLY) use it
Thanks for these videos they're super useful. I just wish there was somewhere I could buy an off the shelf kit with everything needed to make it happen that I can solder together. It's such a pain having to locate and order all the parts (especially for those of us outside the USA).
I realise this video is rather old now... but if anyone wants to do a build like this... You can get 40 pin DPI screens really cheap all over the place i get mine from buydisplay... Theyre great quality and you can contro and runl them directly from the raspbery gpio. You only need to have a separate board to drive the backlight. Its far more efficient and higher quality than using a composite video display like in this video...
This is a very good and detailed build guide thank you!
Warning! Mixing stereo audio to mono audio has to always be done using those two resistors, like seen in the video. Joining the left and right channels using wire can *damage some audio devices!*
Even though I will never do anything like that in my life
I'll keep that tip in mind
Thanks random stranger
awesome work, keep whatever you're doing up!
the revo k101 or plus would be a great clone handheld to try this on because it already has the battery, screen, memory card in cartridge (kcard),and extra buttons.we just need copies of the housing or shell to put it in.
I want to do this mod so bad. Love the tutorials
Aside from those custom PCBs I've got all those parts in one form or other lying around including water damaged original Gameboy, so for £8.95 for button PCB it's worth building this.
And I may or may not add that cartridge PCB if I can find one at a good price.
0 dislikes, you earned yourself a like
I liked cause of the awesome music in this video.
You should use a heat gun to loosen up the double sided before disassembly
you're a pro wermy. good job!
So much awesome chiptunes in this :)
I would love to see you build one of these babies using a Pi 3
pro tip 3 years later: 4:50 - heat it up with a hair dryer so you can remove the thing easy from the glue.
And someone called him savage IN THE COMMENTS...
@wermy I would love to put one of these together, but the parts list you have for the button PCBs and such are not available anymore, do you happen to have another source for the parts that aren't available from Helder anymore?
Great video, they just go from awesome to more awesome :)
You can use less Parts for sure.
The Button Board is super easy to build. You can wire the buttons directly into the Pi.
For Audio, there is a GPIO PWM Audio Guide out there.
SPI Screens seem to work pretty well, and they are really cheap.
I disassembled a old USB Powerbank, and it had all the Battery parts already done.
This working is not confirmed. Still waiting for Parts.
