I think we have to be careful here because not all non nutritive sweeteners are equal in terms of their impact on the body as an example, allulose has some pretty good research behind it that not only is it metabolically neutral, but it actually can help with several metabolic disorders.

Agreed - they're not all equal. The point of this video is that artificial sweeteners are absolutely NOT a "get-out-of-jail-free card" and many/most have just as many negatives (if not more) than sweeteners like cane sugar.

The massive increase in obesity is NOT due to artificial sweeteners, as you imply. It is due to the extreme increase in processed food/carb consumption. Other major causes are high fructose corn syrup (on almost every every label you read) AND especially the huge rise in seed oil consumption such as vegetable oils, canola oils, soybean oils, sunflower oils, Crisco, etc. The LOW CARB DOWN UNDER channel has much scientifically sound data on the timeline and evils of health-destroying seed oils. I am not saying artificial sweeteners are a good thing. Only, perhaps, as a temporary bridge to wean oneself off of toxic sugar addiction that almost everyone experiences these days. The ludicrous anti-fat movement escalated dramatically in the 1980s and still persists in food marketing. Healthy fats were replaced with sugar. Oatmeal, marketed as a heart-healthy food is anything but. Wearing a continuous blood glucose monitor is life-changing and will reveal what is spiking your insulin and leading to fat deposition in the cells and liver.

Mary! So much good stuff here - I agree that processed foods, high fructose corn syrup, and unhealthy oils have also contributed to the obesity crisis we're facing in the US. And increased healthy fat consumption is crucial for maintaining a healthy metabolic state - I talk about this in many of my other videos if you want to check it out! But I have to note that artificial sweeteners contribute to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome by additional pathways - like hugely disrupting the microbiome (a huge regulator of metabolism and blood sugar) and spiking insulin (yep, this is a real thing - especially with sugar alcohols, which are common artificial sweeteners). Here are a few research articles that speak to my points, if you'd like to have a peek...thanks so much for your thoughtful comment! ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/pdf/10.2105/AJPH.2013.301556 - diabetesjournals.org/care/article/36/9/2530/37872/Sucralose-Affects-Glycemic-and-Hormonal-Responses
