- Noisy steering?
This episode shows how to swap out a power steering pump.
I’ve learned They do not often go bad, but usually will be leaking or noisy, and can be rebuilt much less expensively using this:
www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem/t...
A remanufactured unit will most likely be an OEM unit, rebuilt. Napa offers them and they have a lifetime warranty.
First, clean you reservoir.
Secondly: If power steering pump is not noisy or leaking- go directly to the Rack.
That is next most likely, as these services did not silence my steering, but they did help.

"Better than a new auto payment", my thoughts exactly sir!
I search this for like a week now. Thanks broh 🙏🙏
Thank you for the video. Was extremely helpful
Just replaced my power steering pump on my 2002 Tacoma 3.4 V6 today. I'm the original owner with 110,000 miles. Factory pump lasted me 18yrs. This is the official factory part number. Description: U-23 Pump, Part # 44320-04052. You truck had the OEM power steering pump. Paid $350 my OEM pump and it is NEW not remanufactured.
The power steering line with the clamp is seized up really bad what do I do?
When taking the banjo bolt out for the line i couldnt get it out started spinning the big nut on the other end
That's exactly my same problem, how can we detach the line without risking on ripping it from the force of a breaker bar if that banjo bolt seized in there with the pump?
Good video J Lee! I have an 03 double cab too. 155k on it. I get a squeal when starting truck. The steering does not work like it use too. I did the timing belt 2 years ago. I think I may have made the belt to tight and it has worn the pump. I bought it new and have never changed the fluid. Gonna try the flush and clean the reservoir first. No leaking around rack and truck drives straight down the road so based on that? I think rack is fine.
Wish you had shown removing the banjo bolt
I have a 2003 Toyota Tacoma pre runner V6 i just had my rack opinion replaced and the power steering unit replaced and for some odd reason when you turn the wheel either one direction or the other direction at binds and then releases is that a faulty pump?
I got a rebuild rack and pinion for my 2001 4runner v6, same as your taco, im about to change out the pump since i thought it was the rack i replace rack first, but its hard to steer, no power at all, i bought a rack on amazon with rebate only cost about 75buck.

I would replace rack obly with OEM or rebuilt oem. The consensus is aftermarkets are not good quality and don’t last as long. If your PS pump is bad, it will be making noise or leaking pretty badly. Hope it works out for you
@@JLeeChron its not leaking , making a little noise and hard to turn, i bought a used one from a junkyard and will be putting it in and see. For 75buck for a rack is a deal i can live with.
I'm at 190k bout to turn 200k with my 2001 tacoma, and wouldn't you know I have all the same problems that I'm about to work on. Wouldn't surprise me either that you just changed out your alternator too.
Lol " John Doe" everyone thinks of that as a random name to hide under
Any update on fixing the noise?
haven't had a chance- summer, whine was almost non existent, as its gotten colder it has returned, might be the lines, maybe the alternator. just no time to throw parts at it or rebuild alternator. -might soon though. I dont think it is the rack quite yet...just not sure
Beautiful truck! Very nicely taken care of
I just started noticing all the same symptoms on my 2000 4runner. How long can I go before changing the pump?
How oong can you go?-Until it makes an awful screeching sound or maybe massive fluid loss.
Hey J Lee did you ever figure out the issue. I’m also getting some groaning from my power steering pump and my wheel is a little harder to turn that usual. I don’t think the fluid has ever been changed so I’m gonna start with flushing the power steering fluid.
Yea, flush and clean the reservoir. Still no leaks or catastrophe here, so I run it as is. When the temps turn cold, the groaning is more noticeable. I’ve also looked into the alternator as the culprit, but the truck just runs and operates reliably so its the “if not broke don’t fix” approach, just regular maintenance for now.
@@JLeeChron Will do! Hopefully it helps my steering out. Thanks man, I look forward to your next video.
where did you get the pulley, if you got a new one?
I cannot find it anywhere and just the pulley is $180 but I don't think that's right
Michelle Helm I used the old one, cleaned it up. You may have to visit a junk yard or search for used.
What if u accidentally broke the wire that was hooked to the clip ?
Trying to replace my power steering pump on my 2001 tacoma, 4 cylinder. I'm having trouble getting both bolts in to attach to the motor. I can get one in, but not both at the same time. Did you run into this issue at all?
No
But try backing off the belt so it is at the most loose
Hello, I have a potential solution for you as I have just finished solving an extremely similar problem. Have you replaced your AC idler pulley yet? That seemed to fix my problem after a power steering pump replacement didn’t do the trick. It’s relatively cheap and took me about an hour :)
Was it a low groan in cooler/cold weather?
That sound isn’t as pronounced when warm out. I am inclined to think more of an alternator being the culprit, will look into that though thanks
@@JLeeChron Yes sir, it popped up with colder weather and appeared to quite down a little bit with warmer weather. Just a thought, best of luck in your troubleshooting!
What's the torque spec for the bolt that holds the pulley to the P.S PUMP?
32ft lbs
43 N.m
@@JLeeChron Wow, hey thanks for answering so quick, needed that info. Appreciate it!
How much fluid does it hold?
I got the same exact pump at autozone for 30 bucks
Sounds like mine :(
Barry Morton gonna have to do the rack ! All thats left, I think this one is an aftermarket anyway. No Toyoda markings, we’ll see
The high-pressure steering line has been my only problem with detaching from the pump. How can I remove that banjo bolt? I managed to get it somewhat loose but the problem was that the line itself moved at the same time as the bolt and i dont want to risk on ripping the pressure line with too much force from the breaker bar 🥲
There should be a tab on the line that locks it in place from moving when tightening or loosening. Check for it on the backside -might need a hand
@JLeeChron Thank you so much for the advice, I'll make sure to look into it tomorrow. I also appreciate how fast you responded, it really means a lot!
@@JLeeChron I don't see any tab on the line itself, other than washer bracket and a metal wedge
@@OctAngelat 8:01 you can see there is a “tab” or -metal wedge maybe you refer to -that should prevent the line from twisting when you tighten or remove it.
