    Would love for you to watch part 2 of my video on 09 kx250f surfacing head and laser cam alignment . Just your thoughts on it trying to figure out the real answer .thanks for your videos I’ve learned a few tips myself

      Thanks for your comment. As it turns out, I do the same head "resurfacing" as you do. You can see that technique in my latest video on the CRF150R. As far as the cams go on your 09, I was trying to understand where your concern was . The 2 dots on the cam gear are stamped into the gear from the factory and will never change. Most of these are timed by counting links on the chain but if you get the dots lined up with the head, you will be fine. You mentioned spinning of the gear and that is a concern for sure. It wouldn't change the dots on the gear but the lobes would be off. You can also reference my 2011 KX250F build as I go into that in depth.

      @@restoroosterohv thanks for the answer back. My main concern was that when the bike broke the valve guide .that the cam did slip in the sprocket but under comparison in other pics that dot that’s up top on the exhaust side is one tooth off on the laser and it came to me that it would have to be because that would be the split second difference in open and closing from intake to exhaust.intake is a fraction ahead following release of the exhaust. I’ve just done another video on the subject correct me if I’m wrong but I’m positive that’s why. Although the average person would never catch that they would align the to on bottom throw a eye on top dots and roll with it. Now that I discovered that difference I just thought it would be a good learning curve to understand that and to help others and I hope I’m right. I still learn stuff all the time.

      Don’t worry about the top dots. They are for counting chain links between cams and nothing more. There is no way for them to change position on the gear. Align the proper timing marks with the head on TDC and you’re good to go. If the gear spun, the lobes would be in the wrong position and the cam would need to be replaced. Again, reference my 2011 KX250F video for what that look like.

      Since this is an old video the only advice I can offer is to looks at a parts diagram (Partzilla or the like) and be sure you are installing everything in the correct order. If you are still stuck, consider getting a service manual.

    Top of the a.m. it’s me again & I got the bike running but having issues w/it staying running so I decided to to pull the head back off bcuz I noticed that it would smoke (white) a little bit turning the bike off so with the being said I noticed the top of the piston has oil sitting in the top of of it I took the valves out & checked to see if any are bent they all same good considering I had just installed them a few months back but the left exhaust was pretty much stuck & I had to tap it out what could that mean?!

    • @restoroosterohv
      @restoroosterohv  Рік тому

      Put the valves in a drill and spin them slowly. Look for bends in the shaft and head. There shouldn’t be any wobble at all. White smoke generally means burning coolant or water. Oil burning will have a blue tint to it. If it is burning oil, check the piston ring gap measurements and be sure that they are installed on the piston on the correct orientation. Also you will need to check to be sure that the valve guides are not excessively worn and the seals are good.

    the cam journals are scroed a bit is that an issue, mine are almost identical i was gonna hit them with 1500 to 2000 grit

    • @restoroosterohv
      @restoroosterohv  Рік тому

      Light marking is not a major issue and can be cleaned up with 2000 grit sandpaper or fine scotch brite pads but the clearances should be checked with plastigage. If they are scored, it may be too late for that head. It is due to oil starvation to the cam journals.

    • @andrinaallan196

      @@restoroosterohv right dont laugh, i didnt realise one side had a bearing, the slight scoring was under that. Im used to my old ktm that both sides had journals!

    I have a few questions my valves look good and the bike works perfectly, starts in 1 or 2 kicks after sitting for 2 weeks, but my shims are at 1.40 and 1.35, that means I need to change my valves right?

    • @restoroosterohv
      @restoroosterohv  Рік тому +1

      Bike starts easily that's for sure. Those shims are pretty thin but not out of the realm of reality. You probably have some valve/valve seat wear for sure. Sounds like your clearances are good and the bike runs well. You basically have 2 choices, pull the head off and do a bunch of measurements or ride it out!

    • @edibertoalas8294
      @edibertoalas8294 Рік тому

      @@restoroosterohv thank you, I will be pulling the head off and measuring it’s all, hopefully it’s only valves, and not seats, I’m really not sure how to tell if the seats are wore out. How do you tell?

    • @restoroosterohv
      @restoroosterohv  Рік тому +1

      That can get complicated. Refer to your service manual for all of the specs and procedures.

    Oh man, it is like you have my bike. I live in China and few years ago bought 2010 kxf250. Also had ton of chinese replacement parts like radiators, hoses, sliders, unoriginal fasteners and every thread striped.

      @@restoroosterohv I'm also doing bottom end rebuild right now. Need to replace con rod. Maybe it died because nikasil peeled off in chinese cylinder(possible because of overheating in the past) But in general I had bad luck with chinese engine parts for this bike. For example, new piston was hitting valves because pin hole was drilled with incorrectly and piston was turned a bit in cylinder, so valves didn't open into recesses made for them. New valves died in 20 hours and destroyed guides, because looks like they were not surface hardened.
