Artists are always complaining to me that their last engineer has made them suffer through an "echo" or "delay" in the headphones while recording. This annoyance is caused by latency and can be easily fixed with the right Pro Tools settings.

You can also check low latency monitoring in the options window, which will disable plugins while recording.

Thank you SO much for this information as it helped completely remove any latency issues that just suddenly developed. Once I put your suggestion to work, the only problem was that now there is no sound at all and the play button lags even when the file plays with no sound. It's a trade-off, but at least there is no latency. Thanks! Yeah, the other poster is SO right. You should be teaching in university where you belong.

Peace King! I express infinite love & and gratitude for you sharing this. I'm experiencing this issue when I create a new pro tools session. The lowest my Focusrite Scarlett is allowing me to go is 256. I didn't have this issue before. Do you have any idea what else it can be besides plug-ins?

See i got a Focusrite 2i4 2nd gen i know my interface stand no chance with your UAD lbvs but on my Focusrite 2i4 2nd gen interface you think if switch on Direct monitoring & turn on low legacy monitoring on pro tools 12 i can record with one my fav compressors without getting that crazy legacy sound plz can u help me thank you.

Great tips here! If you want ZERO latency I would suggest Direct or "Discreet" monitor mixing to completely eliminate latency....for good! Monitor outside of your DAW before the signal gets to the computer. Monitor EVERYTHING outside of the computer. That's the secret. Get a 6-8 channel non-powered mixer that has auxiliary or effect output buses with a summing channel.
1. Plug your mic into your Mixer Channel 1
2. Set auxiliary output to max for Channel 1
3. Send Mixer Auxiliary outputs to Audio Interface (Audio interface is connected to PC with USB/Firewire)
3. Plug the output of your Audio Interface into the summing channel on your Mixer (So you get computer sound into your mixer)
4. Turn OFF "Listen" or "Monitor" button in your DAW (So now your not hearing the vocal back from the PC)
5. Send headphone mix from mixer. ZERO Latency

How do you do this running 11+ tracks? I'm recording drums and basically a full band setup... using a zoom L20R.... found the best way is to use the DAW to master anything played.... not really recommended to run a DAW live for bigger setups...

Honestly you should do one where you include the check boxes, delay compensation, I can have no plug ins, 64 sample rate, and no plugins and still have the latency. It's even making my recordings off time
Make sure u using an interface and xlr mic not a usb mic. Try actually going up on samples, either 128 samples or 256 samples

What if there isn’t latency while monitoring but there is during playback? Feel like I’ve seen it in one of your mixing videos but I can’t find it
When im working this out its either the vocals getting overly chopped when i drop buffer size (even to 64,128) and latency is crazy during 512- 1024 but i drop it to 32 the beat is chooped vocals clear? If that makes sense but yeah im playing cat and mouse rn gang need help

I have to change between my audio interface (Steinberg UR22C) and ASIO4ALL while producing and recording, as my audio interface is always stuck at a particular sample rate selected in it's driver software itself.

If I click Low latency monitoring it stops but it does make the recording so quiet ...
