I am a commercial actress and they would never spring a whole script on you like that. It would be totally counterproductive for them as commercials involve an extortionate amount of money and they want you to be the best you can be. You usually get the script the day before but you'll have seen it already at the casting before you even booked the job. Also, they never ask you to say 'take one, take two' etc, they made the girls do that so they could edit them saying higher and higher numbers to try and make them look silly. It's totally normal to do 20 plus takes.
Can we also note that Jenah was only 18 years old here, respect to her for handling herself with such dignity and grace in this awful situation.

      @WaggieMaggieful 2 роки тому +266

Agreed. I'm an actress as well and the way they're shooting seems totally silly to me: let's do one long take with a bunch of dialogue that we just gave you and hour ago an have you film that first? The final product is gonna have a bunch of edits and cuts and a lot of this dialogue would prob be VO anyway. They're just wasting time, money, and abusing these poor girls

Yup. Did some commercials when I was younger and the experience is pretty much the same:
      1. I've been handed a script the day before a shoot, but it's usually the same script in casting or a slightly different one with minimal edits.
      2. I've never seen anyone do one long take over and over again. The entire commercial (usually 30 secs long only or at most 1 minute after edits) is shot in short segments most likely to avoid going over ad minutes. They'll want to be able to easily cut the stuff that isn't needed.
      3. It's the production crew that does most of the work, adjusting and readjusting props, lights, etc. I don't think I've ever been on a shoot with this much senseless noise.

Thanks for this insight, I didn't know how these productions work behind the scenes. So I totally didn't clock just how unbelievably unfair this really was. 😤😤😤
And let's be real, I'm sure that in the behind the scenes of this show, they have multiple short takes when judges, Mr. Jay, or guests are explaining things. So I'm sure that the girls even knew, or at least suspected, that this was not how commercial production shoots are supposed to work.

I really hate that Jay apparently goes on interviews now and tries to paint himself as one of the victims of Tyra's wrath when he very frequently seemed to laugh at the models, relish in their anguish, constantly made faces and was impatient, and never seemed so bothered as he always had quips and insults for the girls at the ready. Okay, but having them say what take it was was absolutely a psychological thing. I process dailies for episodic TV (basically process all the footage shot each day and get it prepped for the editing team) and not even the ACs marking each take read anything off the slate like that. The slate has cam roll, scene, take (+ other variable info depending on the show). The AC just says what camera it is (ex. two camera set up, "Two camera, A mark" (claps slate)). Having someone say what take it is is absolute nonsense and would be useless in editing because I don't want to have to scrub through and listen for each take (I also doubt they were even cutting cam/audio between 'takes' and so they weren't even different takes but a series). So, yeah, that whole model saying each take especially having the number go 10+ is absolutely a tool to bring their confidence down

Also, it’s super common to have cue cards, not a “crutch”. Some of the biggest actors and TV personalities have cue cards for reference just in case. The best actors/tv ppl (like news anchors) are so good at reading cue cards without you noticing while shooting you’d never know. So once again ANTM is just making this absurdly hard for “drama”.

No doubt this show did damage and caused long term psychological issues for some girls with the stupid mind games and bullying, I feel so bad for them, they were just used and abused and then discarded in the name of entertainment. Those girls deserved better back then and they deserve apologies now today.

OMG ME TOO!!! 10000% this was my favorite show as a teenager, but rewatching all these episodes is extremely hard, I actually feel ashamed that I didn't see the toxicity, bullying, the actual torment and abuse these poor girls suffered through at the time, but I was just naive honestly, I certainly know better now..... what a disgrace, Tyra should be ashamed 👎😠 And I couldn't agree with you more, well said 👌😁❤️❤️

Luckily I had already been a model.. by 17/18...I think the show came out a year or two later. I knew there was something wrong with that industry..I worked in Paris. I was constantly being treated horribly by other "house models." I wish I was allowed to be a ballet dancer (was religious and wasn't allowed. Go figure....)
Horrible horrible horrible.. I couldn't have ran in a further direction. I always thought that all of these girls (most were not really anything BUT pedestrian. ) I hated this show and I am concerned that there are so many women saying they idolized the show and women on it..ugh.. but I suppose we were all young once.
It's legit a really hard job and it can destroy your life.

I went to school with Jenna, she was a Junior when I graduated and she had a lot of friends. She really was very nice and fun to be around. Our school was riddled with preppy rich kids, jenah wasn't like them, and you kinda had to have tough skin so any "cockiness" they felt was a product of that, but she wasn't a rude person. Her elimination was Bs.

My first manager treated me the way Tyra and panel treated Jenah. I was 16 at the time, and Jenah is only 18 here. This is so fucked up. The gaslighting and abuse on this show infuriates me.

Jenah's commercial had the most real and natural personality. Her commercial was the only one which made me want to purchase the product. Because this is a competition I would say that Chantal's was a bit robotic , I said a bit because all of the women (I hate their use of the term girls, these models are over 18) did an amazing job. If Tyra was a real supportive role "model" she wouldn't attack these women on a personal level. The way she/they attacked Jenah on a personal level was one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen on the show. I liked her commercial but I can understand the professional criticism. But I guess if everything on the show was professional, it'd be boring. But this is why I didn't watch it very often. I don't like seeing people ripped to shreds.

"Bring in... DUN DUN DUN the CUE CARDS!!"
Apparently the vilest threat one can utter. And no, I'm not directing that towards the model but MR Jay for making her feel like it's the worst that can happen, to use the one thing that in any other, normal, situation would be used naturally in such a situation.
To go full on against Jenah's most insecure and vulnerable spot in front of everyone is just plain nasty. But to tell her that she overcame her insecurity and changed because of THEM, is a horrible attempt at making HER growth and HER strength to be something Tyra and Jay and the others created. They couldn't just send her home, telling her that she did great, that it was she herself that got her this far. They send her home more or less telling her that everything she accomplished she owed to them.
To me, Jenah had the most potential and I hope she's doing great and found her way.

Out of all the commercials, Jenah's was the most believable to be a tv ad imo. It seems like something you'd actually see during a commercial break. Tyra decided even before the shoot that she wanted Jenah gone and likely told Jay and the director as much, which is why they were so quick to jump to cue cards and criticize her for being bubbly in the commercial. This was some rigged BS from the get-go.

Tyra: "Jenah, you are the best model in the competition and I, Tryna Banks, did so much work for you to find yourself. Now go pack your bags because you aren't ANTM"
Her speech threw me off so hard. She literally said Jenah rivaled some top models and that the other girl who actually had some background in modeling was not doing as well.

I remember when I first watched this that I didn’t understand why they didn’t talk about cue cards for Saleisha. Since this season had plenty of controversy particularly about the winner, now watching it doesn’t surprise me. Jenah was an incredible model despite what production threw at her. This season was so full of talent and it’s not fair how only the winner is boosted up.

It was the episode they’d already decided she should be eliminated, and they went into it pushing a pre-determined narrative to make it appear justified. These girls don’t get paid a penny from the show, because it’s classified as a competition-making it pretty clear how much they’re valued.

I remember really liking Jenah as a kid, I related to her bc she wasn’t always giddy and smiley because I had moments like that too. I was invested in her journey and was rooting for her, so watching everyone tear her down at every corner ripped me to shreds. I remember angry crying when she was eliminated and refusing to watch the finale.
