How content creators are being ripped off on social media | Julian Sarafian | TEDxFolsom

- Social media influencers and content creators can make millions of dollars documenting their life or sharing their hobbies. But most do not. In fact, most creators struggle to make a living. Julian, a lawyer for content creators and creator himself, sheds light on how content creators are being ripped off on social media by both brand sponsors and the social media platforms themselves. Social media - and the money it makes - aren't going anywhere, and it's something he encourages everyone to think about as we enter a digital era of humanity.
Julian is a graduate of Harvard Law School and ex-Silicon Valley biglaw lawyer turned mental health advocate and content creator. He commands an audience of nearly 350,000 across social media platforms, where his content focuses on the legal profession, mental health, and social issues. He is also the founder of For Creators by Creators PC; a law firm focused on representing content creators and social media influencers. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Thank you for the opportunity to speak out on such an important topic!
You did great!!! Go Julian!!!
About time someone spoke up about this publicly. Well said! I hope more content creators push back as a group. Im tired of all the same terrible ads on youtube. Most of which sound dodgey as too on youtube. I refuse to pay money to stop ads. Happy to pay money to a creator to use a new platform.
Thank you! I agree and hope creators group up but it looks increasingly unlikely (despite some talks of unionization). Hopefully, more advocacy for creators will push the platforms to treat creators better.
Thank you! I 1000000% agree.
Julian is the real deal! I’ve gotten to know him over the last few years and his passion and generosity shines through. Thank you for talking about this and exposing the system!
I’m a music creator and this is an incredibly well done TEDx Talk. Thank you, Julian Sarafian!
You're so welcome !!!
Facts!!
Content creators hand over the control of their 'business' to the organisations that host their content.
As an old school businessman, I was always told to limit others from contrling aspects of YOUR business. But creators have almost no other choice.
It's their bat and ball and we're having to play by their rules.
Great perspective on the value of building communities in this modern day world, and championing advocacy as well
Thank you :))
Another issue, not mentioned in this talk, is the algorithms. It's not helpful to creators when the platform doesn't show their content to their followers. For several months Facebook was showing me /maybe/ 50% of the posts from accounts I follow.
Love these insights! Very interesting, especially for me as a Law student. Great talk :)
Thank you!!! :)
Thank you Julian Sarafian😍
You're welcome :)
Very great insight and unique perspective.

因為這個議題我觀察很久了,在還不是社群媒體之前我就有發覺到這一方面的問題……大家加油!
❤❤❤❤
I agree 💯
Yes, i watch this... and suddenly am interrupted by an ad.
Content Creation Career is the best
it spreads both positivity also negativity in people's behavior.
This guy has really that confidence to stand over these cringe social media content creators especially those who are making senseless content.
Decentralized social is the way. Not your keys not your content.
That fact that only 27k people were interested to know about it so far 😢
Soon as he said something bout ads it went to one 😂

Freedom to transact
... this channel was something different ...
Solution: Start using BSV the original Bitcoin protocol where you get to own your own data on the Blockchain. All with the ability to transact with micropayments.
Finally a non woke Ted talk
Does this lawyer know what happens when the government forces a greed factory to pay its contractors a fair wage?
Aku punya sebuah mimpi untuk berbicara di sini suatu hari nanti.
Trying to sell sympathy for self entitled influencers won’t work at least with me, couldn’t care less, open your own UA-cam and see how easy it is to maintain
$$$BEEP BEEP. $$$ BEEP BIT BOI INVESTING TRENDING ON TWITTER..
Defend influencers?? No F way!!! If you a real content creator, then welcome to marketing 101, what you stated about companies and the law has been truth way before the internet.
Awesome ✨🫡thank you this is needed

Good job
Creativity that deserves zero.
"We need government to control socia media..." I really can't believe this guy is asking for a ministry of truth to be created
.. we are "in the hands" of these kids ...
He lost me there… whoever believes “we need the government” on the internet certainly don’t understand what that means….
I like how he gave the weakest solutions. Hahahaha... No mention of patreon or any other services to help creators. They have donate buttons now and I think the buy buttons. Idk, being a successful artist is tough.
Influencers that leverage parasocial relationships in order to peddle dubious products ("this is not financial advice") to their followers are being treated mean by advertising companies, oh no ... 🙄
Just get a real job, then.
