    I’m number 8, I care! I’m in the same boat. I have 1/2 marathon trail run soon and when it’s over the runs will be around 5k just to maintain my cardio and back to riding for the summer/ fall.

    I want to run in addition to my cycling, but I started to develop a form of bursitis and my knee would hurt for days after just a 2 mile run. So, the bike is all I have to stay somewhat fit at 57 yrs old. I did start a bit of a cycling regimen and have lost 8 lbs myself, hope to lose another 10 to be at the weight I was in the Army 38 yrs ago.

    Congrats on a bunch of these really great things you've been achieving! One of those is losing (some or all of) the alcohol. It's wild how much our lives become entangled with that stuff and we kind of only see it when we step outside of that normal pattern.
    I'm no-alcohol since mid-September. I stopped for two reasons:
    1. My wife wanted to stop and I'm always down to help her reach her goals. What's important to her is important to me. Two people moving in the same direction creates more momentum than one person moving and one person staying still. Physical momentum and psychological momentum work the same way it seems.
    2. The things that I want to achieve are significantly slowed/hindered/negatively-impacted by a blurry brain. Most of my opportunities to ride my bike are in the evening. If I have drinks with supper before I ride I'll be impaired while I'm literally risking my life to try to squeeze a few more seconds out of my PR on my local trails. If I have drinks after I ride then I'm impairing my brain as I go work on stuff I consider really important to the clients who also think what I'm doing is really important. They rely on me to do great work and for me great work doesn't happen if I've softened my awareness. I work a lot and that leaves less room for times where my brain can be sloppy.
    At some point I might go back to alcohol in small amounts. I have some really fantastic rare beers (that age well) and liquors waiting for me if I ever go back. We'll see. I haven't made any rules. My opposition defiance tendency doesn't know who to fight against if it doesn't have a hard rule to turn into the enemy, so I'm free to go back to alcohol if/whenever I want to. So far I've had no desire to do so.
    A quick no-alcohol, tasty, cocktail-esque drink recipe that has been making my life better:
    4 oz ginger beer. I prefer to go spicier rather than sweeter.
    2 oz unsweetened grapefruit juice
    1 oz agave syrup - adjust this to taste (which is probably directly related to how sweet the grapefruit juice and/or how spicy the ginger beer is; if using the sugary Dole grapefruit juice omit the syrup altogether)
    Combine grapefruit juice and agave syrup in a shaker - no ginger beer - and shake five seconds with no ice. The goal is to mix the thick syrup into the liquid and aerate it. Add some ice and shake for five more seconds. Strain into a glass with ice. Pour ginger beer over the juice/syrup/ice combo. One gentle stir to combine ginger beer and juice and serve. Could garnish with grapefruit or lime if feeling extra fancy. Do not add ginger beer to shaker. Shaking a carbonated liquid will ruin your night.

    I’ve been enjoying the running content, in the last two and a half months I’ve gone from hating running my whole life and never walk/run further than 5k to comfortably running 10k.

    The closer you get to your ideal weight, the harder it is to lose the weight. To lose 11 lbs with your build is fantastic. Excellent work!

    On a separate note, I pretty much quit drinking alcohol while training for my second Marathon. I noticed that even a 1/2 glass (4-5 oz) of a really good craft brew would make my run feel crappy the next day, the heartrate, pace, and other data seemed to back this up.(I was also in my early 50s ... YMMV)
