Both good question. Yes, you can mix any dust together but to blend a new color it would have to be thoroughly blended. I often mix luster and petal dusts together to get the effect I want.

Thank-you! This video already answered so many of my questions! Just one more...
Can I use the petal dust on dried royal icing flowers?
Hello Alan!
I want to take the time and tell you thank you for these videos. They are a HUGE help to me, a passionate beginners baker and decorator. This video was God sent to me as a eye opener regarding non toxic and decorating dust.
One question. I bought a royal pearl rainbow pearl from CK products for white chocolate shells I am making. It says for decorating use only. Does this mean the chocolates wont be edible if I use it?
great tips
thank you so much for this video! i would like a metallic, edible finish (colors: teal and purple). i would like a sparkly (almost glitter), edible fuschia. which do you recommend? thank you so much!!
Years ago, all flowers were colored with powdered chalk. Today we use powdered food coloring. Chalk can still be used but it does not give the same depth of color that many of the petal dusts achieve.
thank you, the most helpful video about dusting I've seen,
but i have a question, can i mix 2 colors of petal dust (like red and blue to create purple) ?
also can i mix luster and petal dust together before applying to the flower to create a certain tone ?
Hi Chef Alan! May i ask if the petal dust are the ones used for the stained glass technique of cake decorating? Thanks so much
👌👍
Hi Chef Alan...I absolutely love your videos. I will be making a Henna inspired wedding cake. I will either use the Paisley stencils or pipe the designs myself. Which dust do you recommend to get silver color since the designs can't be taken out?
I would use NuSilver luster dust.
Hi, your videos are wonderful!!! I noticed the blue mat used to rolled out the gum paste and I would like to know where I can get one please.
I sell them on my website but the new mats are a different color but still a great product. Here is a link- www.globalsugarart.com/silicone-mat-24-36-inches-by-ateco-p-20786.html
Thankyou for this video. I'm teaching myself how to make gumpaste flowers for my brother's wedding cake, and I am a little worried about coloring them.
One question...can you air brush them?
I just ordered the edible hybrid luster dust (soft gold and old gold) from your website yesterday. I am hoping that one of those 2, or mixed together, will give me a similar effect as the gold highlighter...but edible. Any tricks on achieving close to the color of the gold highlighter?
The color of gold highlighter cannot be achieved using edible luster dusts. You can get a nice gold but it will not have the high metallic shine that inedible highlighters produce.
Love thisI am just learning so this is very interesting. I wondered how they all worked..Can anyone tell me if you can color your flowers, lets say with a Petal Dust, let it dry after you steam if, if you steam it, and then use the Super Pearl Dust over it?
that is all I want to know.. THANK YOU, Victoria
You can use super pearl dust over the petal dust if you want the shiny pearlescent look.
Thanks so much for your videos.Where can I get most of the tools needed for cake decorating?
Ebay
oh my! thanks so much for this video :D ! i just have one question so where i live there are no stores that sell petal dust (and i need it before the 1st of nov for a cake so online shopping is a pain) i read online that you can make petal dust out of non-toxic chalk, is this true?
Can that Super Pearl Dust be use with alcohol to paint on buttercream cake?
Hello sir what if theres no vodca brandy? What us the alternative to use? Ty
Is the luster dust edible when you paint it on wet? When you finished the gold flower you mentioned that it was a decoration that needed to be removed from the cake?
Thank you Chef! I wrote a while back and since then I have bought everything I need to make my own gumpaste flowers to pre made ones with all the different kinds of dusts you showed here.. The ONLY problem I am having is with the pre made flowers. When I go to color them, usually with just a flat matte petal dust, my flowers are coming out looking chalky. I just hate it. SO can you tell me what I am doing wrong? I know you said these pre made ones are more durable and thicker or harder than the gumpaste ones you make. SO I don't want to go to all the trouble of making my flowers just for them to come out chalky and UGLY...I want to take my time and make them correctly. I know some will break but what does a person do to take too much petal dust off or from making them look like thick chalk was put on them! ughhhh...and I love all your tutorials..Working on getting through all of them, anyway! Thank you, and as always a thumbs up!
Victoria, if you do not like the look of petal dust, you have a few options. You can airbrush the petals and leaves or you can use petal dust first, then add a layer of luster dust to soften the look and give them a little shine.
Thank you. The problem is they are chalkly looking, but these are the first ones I have done. I have also heard I can steam them if they are too chalky. But THANK YOU for replying to me and I will do what you have suggested with the flowers I make myself and not the pre made ones. I love your video's.
What did you make the flowers out of? I'm making a wedding cake and was originally wanting to use white chocolate to shape a rose and dust the tops blue.
These flowers are made out of gumpaste.
Good afternoon.
With what you mix Highlighter
Thanks
Hi! I know this video is a bit old but I was wondering if what you said about the gold , silver and copper metallic highlighters applies to the different products on the market today . I'm seeing cookies , cake pops , apples , cakes and all sorts of things completely covered in the super metallic colors where they cannot be removed 😞
There are many metallic colors that are not approved for food use. There are even gold and silver leaf products that are consumable. However, the original Gold and Silver highlighters on the market have not changed.
GlobalSugarArt thank you so much for responding! Would you happen to know what I should be looking for in the ingredients list so I'm able to tell which are edible and which are not? I know some companies don't even have anything listed on the packaging 😞
That is difficult to answer. I would stick with reputable sources that list their ingredients or at least say whether the item is for decorative purposes only or is consumable.
do you add the petal dust on fondant or gum paste after it is completely dry or while it is still moist.
You can do both but petal dust penetrates into the pores of the paste better when the paste is dry. Luster dust, however, covers evenly on both wet or dry paste.
The highlighers should be mixed with either lemon extract or an alcohol such as Vodka or Gin.
Luster Dust, petal dust, pearl dust, sparkle dust, etc are all edible or considered non-toxic. It was the gold, silver and copper Highlighters that are not edible and any decoration that you paint with them need to be removed from the cake before serving.
Hi! I want to bake a cake and using luster petal dust. Do you have any suggestions of products that can be consumed?
All of my Hybrid Luster dusts are FDA approved for food use.
Can you suggest some products??
Do you sell your products in uk? Could not find it. Found only 3 or 4 items on ebay- that's it.
We sell only from our website at globalsugarart.com and ship worldwide.
I am creating a tiara for a princess cake. I was wondering will the gold "pearl" dust give a full coating of the tiara which is made out of gum paste, and make it kind of shimmer?? The gold pearl dust i see offered online looks white in the picture. I just want to be able to paint the tiara and a few accent pieces gold, but to be edible. please help!
Gold Pearl, or any colored pearl dust, will only give a slight shimmer of that color. To complete paint the tiara in gold I suggest using Super Gold luster dust or Edible Hybrid Old Gold Sparkle Dust. Dissolve with one with alcohol or lemon extract to completely paint the tiara. It will not have a metallic look. Only Gold highlighter will give a metallic look but it is not edible.
thank you! Could i paint with the super gold luster dust, and them go back over it with the gold pearl dust to give it the pearly affect
Mia Parker
The gold luster dust will give you a shiny effect. But, yes, you can overbrush with gold pearl for a more pearly effect.
Hi Chef Allan, you said we can combine any kind of dust. first do apply the petal dust then luster or sparkle,etc... Question, Do i have to steam first the petal dust to keep the color i want before applying another dust or not really necessary?
First, you do not have to steam after dusting, That is a preference and does help set the dust so that it doesn't sprinkle down on your cake but is not a necessity. You can layer dust, first a flat petal dust topped with a sparkle or luster or pearl. You can also mix luster and petal together to make color with a little shine.
GlobalSugarArt Thank you so much Chef Allan.
For all the dusts I've seen on the website, they all say "Not to be consummed". I wish the product decription was more specific than having to zoom in on the product photo. Are any dusts okay to consume to decorated chocolate truffles or cake balls?
Yes, there are many new dusts that are now FDA approved or US Certified for food use. At Global Sugar Art we have several food approved dusts already and will be launching a new FDA approved line of sparkle and Luster dusts later in December.
Très intéressant ! J'aime bien être une de vos élèves :) S'il-vous-plait, est-il possible de mettre de la "pearl dust" sur de la "petal dust" pour donner de la brillance au pétale ?? MERCI !Very interesting ! I like to be one of your pupils :) Please, is it possible to put “pearl dust” on “petal dust” to give brightness to the petal ?? THANK YOU !
+grabotte Oui tu peux mettre du pearl dust sur du petal dust. Il le mentionne dans ce vidéo avec la fleur fushias
W. Bedrosian
Merci !!
If i want to cover my gumpaste flowers with silver can i use silver dust n put silver glitter. Pl correct me.
The best way to make silver flowers is to tint the gumpaste a dark grey then dust the dried flowers with NuSilver or Coin Silver dust. For a metallic finish you can dissolve Silver Highlighter with alcohol and paint them but these would not be edible.
@@GlobalSugarArtyoutube thanks for yr reply Allan.u dont know if nusilver is available in india but can i just mix evaporex to the silver dust n airbrush the flowers .pl correct me.
@@theresa.lfernandes7097 Yes, that should work well. Good luck!
@@GlobalSugarArtyoutube thanks a lot
can I use almond extract?
No, that will not work as well. Only Lemon extract works or a clear spirit.
Chef Alan just to confirm all non toxic and FDA approved Dust are edible, and the highlighters are not edible? so cake brushed in gold?? Are they safe to eat?
There are gold dusts luster dusts that are FDA approved for brushing on a cake. So, yes, a gold brushed cake can be safe to eat.

Жалко что не слышно все советы на русском. Только приходится догадываться
Oops sorry I meant Alan. Lol
Such great info once again!Thank you. question for you.can I not color my gum paste and with what? And whats the benefit to coloring with petal dust.
Karen JD You certainly can color the gumpaste with gel colors or powdered food coloring. The petal dust gives the flowers a more realistic look.
GlobalSugarArt Good to know! Thanks you for your quick response, much appreciated.
