      @@sr6571 Capitalism requires a seller and a customer. Consumerism is the way in which that seller deceives the customer to make them buy more. The “being sold a new identity every few months” is consumerism. It is a strategy used by sellers so that they can exploit our human nature and addictive mentalities to make more money off of us. But you can, as a customer, choose to not give in to the consumerism. That’s not anti-capitalist. Capitalism is an economic system not a selling strategy. If you don’t agree with the trends, don’t buy from them. Because you live in a capitalist economy, you are able to choose whether you follow the trends of consumerism or not. Just because many of us are fooled doesn’t mean we don’t have the option to snap out of it. Greed is what drives consumerism -> Consumerism is the habit of buying unnecessary new things routinely -> And capitalism is the system under which all of it operates. But capitalism is too broad to be an appropriate word to use here. I find very often people call anything they dislike in the economy “capitalist.” Small businesses are “capitalist” too. Vaccine development is “capitalist” too. Free trade is “capitalist” too. Rather than blame capitalism for existing, maybe blame society for allowing itself to be manipulated by the temptations of huge multinational corporations.

    I would add a rule to this: Don't limit yourself to the women's section. Some of my most favourite and long-lasting sweaters and more casual tops came from the men's section. As well, if you're a larger person (like me!) men's sizes in T-shirts and such tend to just run larger, so the fit is more generous than women's.

    • @little_flitter
      @little_flitter 3 роки тому +151

      As a small woman I also prefer men's t-shirts. Men's T-shirts, small size, are too big for me, so I buy from the children's section, but the fit is so much better than the women's t-shirts that are more tighter and uncomfortable to wear

    • @cellotag

      This! I have broad shoulders, and so even if something from the women's section fits me in the bust/waist, it rides up too much on my shoulders. Men's sweaters + t-shirts tend to fit me better in that regard.

      When crop tops came "back" in style (im not even sure why they were out of style to begin with) I find my new passion. I will never not wear crop tops. It's been years now and theyre so flattering to/on me. I say stay away from trends, but be wary of *styles*. I would say skinny jeans / high waisted jeans are also a "trend" depending on the decade. But maybe you like bootcut or boyfriend or bellbottoms. Wear what you like and not because its a trend. I hate mom jeans bc they arent flattering on me, but boy are they gorgeous on some other people. And id say that trend has been going for years now and people still wear mom jeans.
      The "trends" i stay away from are certain patterns or fabrics. Like velver was a trend in 2016~2017. And i hate velvet. The same for cheetah/animal print. Thats been back in style since last year and im not a fan. Also when floral was a trend again around 2017, i was not a fan. The same goes for "statement pieces" like a ceryain hairstyle or hairpiece thats a trend (last year it was puffy headbands, the past few years it's been "tiny sunnies") You will never catch me dead wearing a statement piece or trend.
      But I do think "trends" such as things that are BRAND new can affect people. Like softboys wearing skirts. It isnt the first time boys or men have worn skirts, but I do think that the "trend" is important bc it opens a discussion. The same with things like wearing tops without a bra. I havent worn a bra since crop tops came out and I swear I will only buy sportsbras for the gym or i have one bra for formal purposes / work.

      @bladeofSteele 3 роки тому +7

      @@MyFictionalChaos I mostly agree with you, but lol
      I have actually found new loves for things like floral and cheetah that I didn't love the last time they were popular, because I've changed so much. If it weren't for them coming back and making me look at them again as a different "me", I would have numerous less things in my wardrobe that supplement me living my happiest life truest to "me" today :3 but, even with me liking cheetah now, I'm still not going to buy hot pink crushed velvet cheetah printed items. That definitely won't last, and I'm more than happy with a classy variety of what's trending.

      @@hideakisorachi3953 I don't have any thrift shops in my area either. They don't really exist in my country. We have some second hand shops, but they are either for designer clothing or children's clothes. I mostly get my clothes from ebay or flea markets.
      Ebay can be a treasure trove, if you know which search terms to use. Just look up some old catalogues or ads to figure out what some styles are called or from which decade they are or which subculture they belong(ed) to. Sometimes it can help to know which trends inspired other trends. For example I love 70s platforms, but they are hard to find, worn down or expensive. But the 90s took a lot of inspiration from the 70s in some aspects. Stuff from the 90s is much easier to find.
      Or do the complete opposite and just look into any ebay category without entering a search term and see what catches you eye. Some people can't tag to save their lives or don't know what they are actually selling and so their items don't show up in searches. I got some great stuff that nobody else bid on because nobody could find it.
      You can also practice sewing or alterations on items that you no longer wear. If it turns out well you get a new item to wear, if not it's not a big loss because you weren't wearing it anyway.
      Most of all, take your time.
      In the beginning it's hard to build a wardrobe, because we are often limited by various factors (income, skills, family, work/school, fashion knowledge, confidence, availability). But once you have a few good pieces, you can mix them with the stuff you already own until you can replace that with more items you love. Most of us took years with many trials and errors to get to a place that finally felt like 'this is me'.
      I hope this can help you a bit.

    I’ve never understood why everyone assumes that ‘neutral colours’ are just white, black, and grey. Cause that’s just not true. Neutrals can be cream, skin tones, terracotta, clay pinks, earthy greens and many more. Whites, blacks and greys can be nice neutrals but they almost exclusively look good on people with cool skin tones. I do think it is good to have a neutral tank top to use as an undershirt and I would rather have a cream tank top or a tank top that matches my skin tone.
    And yes Jean jackets are so overrated especially since I don’t consider a coat or jacket to be a staple. I like my coats and jackets to be statement pieces. I like my jackets and coats to be unique and colourful as well as versatile especially since I live in Canada where we get a wide variety of weather. I absolutely love all of your tips! I have developed my own fashion rules in my 20s:
    1. If it’s dry clean only, don’t buy it. I’m too cheap to want to spend money on dry cleaning. Don’t buy hand wash only staples. I’m too lazy to keep up with that.
    2. If it attracts excessive cat hair it’s too impractical to wear. My animals are my lifestyle. If it doesn’t fit my lifestyle it doesn’t fit me.
    3. Grunge pieces and black clothes stay in my wardrobe the longest and get worn the most. These are my investment staples that make sense for me.
    4. As much as I’d love to be the gothic queen on the outside that I know I am on the inside, whenever I buy goth clothing they are very hard to incorporate seamlessly into my wardrobe and end up not being worn. I have to be very selective about introducing gothic items
    5. I’m not a fancy person with a lot of formal places to go. I only need a few formal pieces in my wardrobe. I shouldn’t invest too much money or closet space on formalwear

I totally agree that converse are the cargo pants of shoes but I do think that everyone should have one really comfortable pair of sport shoes that are specifically for the type of exercise you most enjoy doing. I spent my early 20s thinking I could do everything in office flats and injured myself because I couldn’t be bothered to buy a decent pair of tennis shoes. I recently bought some and it’s been a game changer. You don’t need to go all MTV Cribs and own a closet full but it’s a worthy investment to have a pair of sport shoes you can go full throttle in when you need to.

      For me, I never buy a new pair of shoes bc ive never been a shoe girl but after years ive realize ive been wearing out things from a decade ago. I think it's good to invest in a new or trendy pair of shows bc theyre just gonna wear eventually. Thats something I just realized in my 20s. I have the opposite problem compared to those who buy too many shoes - I dont buy enough! For me, it should be a pair of running shoes for the gym/running, a pair of sneakers for every day, a pair of boots for the rain, a pair of sandals for the beach, and a nice formal pair. Ive been wearing converse for years and theyve completely disintegrated bc I refuse to spend money on clothes. The same for my beach sandals -- I threw them out a year ago and always have to borrow someone's for the beach.

    I like a lot of these, but also...must disagree with the one about tennis shoes. As someone who has to work on my feet and sometimes walk for 14+ hours at a time, the BEST part of my wardrobe is my good tennis shoes. I used to go through a pair of $10 Walmart shoes every two months, but I've started investing in high quality, well-made shoes instead and it has made a world of difference. For someone who doesn't have to walk all day, I understand the shoes thing. But a good pair of tennis shoes has saved my life and my feet lol! Keep your work in mind when picking clothes. My friend that works in a bank can wear skirts and heels or slacks and flats or whatever she wants, but good jeans and good non-slip tennis shoes are my absolute staple items because they're necessary for my work. Or walking around campus, I can't be bothered to wear flats with no arch support or heels. Tennis shoes saved my life haha

      For me, leather sneakers are the best compromise. They look neat enough for casual office environment, but are also great to walk in. If taken care of regularly, they can last a decade. Flat shoes are a big no no, I'd prefer to buy insoles to wear with them

      This. A well-built sneaker that I can do all my activities comfortably in is worth far more for my feet and lifestyle than a nicer shoe I can get recobbled, even if it costs a bit more long term. I am thinking about investing in a decent pair of leather work boots once I grind my current hiking boots to dust because even high quality rubber and fabric hiking boots wear out and lose shape after a bit, but for day to day wear I've yet to find anything that's as versatile and comfortable as a decent sneaker.

    I “matured” from wearing jeans and “sensible” clothes that I felt were boring but hey I was ugly anyway, to dropping the jeans for skirts and dresses and going more goth until I got on the internet and found what I’d secretly wanted my entire life. The lolita style. My eyes widened, hands shaking as I placed my order and... I love it. I stick out like a sore thumb where I live but I love my lolita inspired clothes, I still want to stay practical so nothing too poofy and it has to be machine washable and yeah I don’t own an iron either. While my appearance hasn’t changed much now I actually like clothes! I used to not care because nothing you saw around here really excited me but waking up the child in me has made me feel happy. So what if people think I’m too old (actually they always seem to think that I’m way younger than my physical age but whatever) I’m not dressed like this for anyone but myself.
    Obviously there’s a slight issue when the temperature here can range from around -20 Celsius to closer to or above 30 during a heatwave in that things should preferably be able to go with or without (thermo) leggings, but on top you have your spring/autumn coat or winter coat outside so that’s a-okay. It’s mainly the problem of not being able to put a pair of outer trousers on when you only wear dresses and skirts, that’s why thermoleggings and even layering them with a pair of normal ones is a neat trick.
    I sew the crotch of my leggings for as long as possible, my grandpa taught me how to fix elastics when he fixed his socks. Thanks grandpa 🙏

    I'm 24 and because of my financial situation I've been forced to not buy many clothes or shoes since I was 16-19. It's been painful to me to feel so limited in my ability to play with my self expression since I'm admittedly intrinsically vain but it's forced me to getting over stupid hangups like external vanity pressures, pushed my comfort zones and pushed me to be a lot more conscious and critical when I do have any spending money and the opportunity to buy new clothes, shoes, makeup. I'm grateful to the experience today. I'd already come to many of the same conclusions you have but I love that you shared this knowledge and it was nice to be validated in my way of thinking now. My taste is opposite of yours, I've always loved fabric, architecture and textures more than prints and I enjoy neutrals but I've come to the conclusion that I also do love color and some prints I really like.
