I knew something was amiss the SECOND it was inferred you would get rid of the leopard print dungarees. I gasped and said out loud, "Leena would never!!" Haha A high drama moment clearly!
When she dropped it on the floor I was like “Nooooooooo!!!!!!!”
Same!
ME TOO. Such a good twist lol
The side eye I was giving her 😅
Same! She really had me. I was like "You know how to sew! Put some new sleeves on that dress!" Inspired to do the same now.
Re: the decapitaded jumpsuit
If you dont want to fiddle too much with the crotch-depth, you could try making a separate waistband from a different fabric and put the elastic in that instead! That way you lose less of the original fabric in the waist, really just the seam allowance, and you dont have to worry about the length. Also, fun contrasting waistband!
OR if the trousers are too long, cut them off and use that fabric as the waistband.
+
Came to say the same thing 🤓
Exactly. Either a contrasting waistband, or a facing, which would keep the original fabric on the outside, and a waistband facing sewed on with a narrow seam allowance and turned inside to form the elastic channel.
Yes, this comment!
The dress sleeve transformation is GENIUS! So fun to watch ❤
I am a sewist myself but when you pulled out the wrap dress felt like a kid seeing a magic trick for the first time, literally I couldn't figure out how you got so much extra fabric 🤣. Genius move and all the upcycles look AMAZING!!
Yeah me too, I was like "there is no way she got that much fabric out of the bottom or did she remove a panel, literally how?!"
For the former jumpsuit. Unpick the waistband and add a strip of fabric (black if possible, but it will be folded inside so it doesn't really matter) and tuck that around the waistband so you regain the length in the patterned part of the trousers. Heck. You could even use your fun leopard print you've been making pockets out of (understitching so it doesn't roll up and reveal itself), and then it's even more uniquely precious to you. I've loved watching your sewing journey ❤ good luck!
I'd use Yoga pants wide waistband elastics for similar results
Seconding that unpicking and adding to the waistband is the best way to fix your issues!
The thing with buying a second dress to use it as spare parts, is so clever! I have never considered that myself.
Yes!! I’m also in awe that none of the parts of the second dress will be wasted either!
That's it. You've convinced me. I'm going to get a cheap-o sewing machine, invest in some local sewing classes, and take control of my mark on this planet. This video is truly inspiring--creatively, economically, and environmentally. Thanks, Leena!
I recommend a second hand mechanical as possible one. These can be easily fixed and serviced ;)
I second getting a second hand machine! The new cheap ones are not made to last, and they're annoying to use.
The best option is not just a second hand machine but a vintage sewing machine (think pre 80s). If they're in working order they are bomb proof. As long as they're looked after they will outlast cheap modern machines. And they're easy to find second hand.
@@katerrinah5442even 90s machines! My parents still have theirs from '93, and it works like a charm with minimal maintenance, and so have lots of my friends parents!
The last top... perfection. And it's given me serious inspiration to do something with my bag of not quite good enough for the charity shop clothes that I've been hoarding for ages.
I almost didn't watch this because clothing clear outs make me almost as angry as hauls, but I knew you had to have something up your sleeve! (And they're great sleeves!!)
This blows my mind about what you said about dresses, because I literally have been going back and forth about whether or not to sew a dress or just stick with a shirt and skirt. I have had issues with my hormones/weight changes too, and sewing a skirt seems a lot less intimidating than sewing a full on dress (especially if my weight fluctuates again, it will be less labor for me to sew). So thank you Sweden for validating my choices this morning!
I'm happy to see you altering your clothes to fit you instead of tossing them. I'm in the midst of a 3 year project to totally make the clothes I want to wear for the next say 10 to 20 years... I'm 62 and my dad is 87 so I figure I will be wearing clothes for a few more decades.
This is very cool!
I love the fluttery sleeves on the leopard dress -- fab that you found its twin secondhand! If you hadn't, contrasting sleeves in a different fabric would've worked -- could also add a matching ruffle on the bottom to tie in the new fabric.
To the chopped jumpsuit and the waist changing to low: you can buy broad black elastic waistband and just sew it on, so you end up with more instead of less! Or as someone else mentioned, you could make a waistband out of a different fabric (like say, plain black). Either way you end up with a higher waistband instead of the low one!
Your enthusiasm and joy at what you've managed to do with these clothes is really inspiring.
MATCHING DRESS SCRUNCHIES
Or bows or headbands
Unsolicited advice incoming: Unpick the folded over waistband, Cut a piece out of any scrap fabric (mayhaps the leapord print?) that is the same length as the waist line circumference, adding seam allowance on all edges. Use that to create elastic channel. Gain back pockets.
Save the dinosaur claws for another crisis 😁
This video was an emotional rollercoaster: I got so scared for a minute about the wrap dress!! (Extra silly of me of course because there was a preview of some of these items in the adaptable clothing video, which I’ve watched more than once). Anyway, now that my heartbeat has slowed to normal I can exhale and say how much I loved this, and how much I’m looking forward to the many more leopard print pockets you can insert into things now that you have all that extra fabric!
The wrap dress is the biggest success story of the year. Very inspiring
loved the little plot twist! really loved all of these :)
I have a latex allergy and I already sew. You just changed my life with this interchangeable elastic thing - no longer will I have to throw away a beloved handmade piece because the stretchy breaks down and makes me itchy
If you undo the elastic waist you've already put into the trousers you can put in a facing and thus loose maybe an inch of fabric, even less. Then sew a new channel for the elastic using the existing fabric and the facing underneath.
+
This. Add fabric to the pants instead of doing the much harder changes to crotch and pockets. In fact, the waist band can be entirely made from a different piece of black fabric which should really keep it high waisted.
I love everything about this video. I want to achieve this level of craftiness
Make a matching scrunchie for the dress! Super easy to sew!
Loved the plottwist! For the jumpsuit, it would be easier to buy some black fabric to make the waistband out of. Adjusting the crotch and the pockets is a lot more work and more complicated.
Before the cheeky plot twist, I was genuinely concerned about your mental health. I thought that something had to be seriously wrong if you wanted to donate some items you've loved so much. 😂
Anyway, the upgrades and fixed are amazing! Inspirational video, as usual 😊
I love this! You can unpick the waistband in the trousers, add a facing to the waistline and use that to make the elastic channel to make the most of the fabric you have. It's probably easier than trying to drop the crotch, and it'll free your pocket (probably), happy crafting!
You should make a matching headscarf out of the dual fabric you made the shirt from. Something 1940s-esque. I feel like that would look fabulous in combo with the shirt.
BTW on the subject of the journey of clothes- remember that natural material clothing can be composted at home. My mum composts old t-shirts, socks, and knickers. We fish the elastic out of the heap 12 months down the line. It keeps it out of landfill.
You can totally make a matching scrunchie for the dress! That's what I've done a couple times!
Fab idea! I might try making scrunchies from old fabric!
When I saw the title of the video my first thought was 'This doesn’t seem like the type of video Leena would make. Throwing out clothes doesn’t really align with the whole theme of the channel..' Well, I’m glad I still watched it. This was fantastic!
As a Swede that absolutely wear my dresses less that my shirts, I think the stats has more to do with how hard (not impossible but still hard) it is to wear your dresses you probably bought for summer time, when it’s piss cold outside, which it is majority of the year here. A long legged and long sleeve jumpsuit is much easier! So my guess is it isn’t a perfect correlation to your problem, but if it feels true for you and your clothing habits, I’m all for it! Great video!
Love the idea of adding little tags to our clothes, as little "inside" jokes!! Ive also seen the idea, when adding pockets, to use a really fun fabric because it's hidden, so doesn't need to match! 😊❤
also the “buying a spare secondhand” to alter an original with is so genius…..im storing this away for so many future possibilities
As a sewer, I immediately found myself reimagining the garments you were going to let go of. I was sad, because you seemed so attached to them. And then, YAY! You did almost exactly what I was thinking to do!!! I didn’t consider finding another dress to use to make sleeves for your wrap dress, but that was an amazing idea. I agree with others here who mentioned adding a separate waistband to the pant portion of the former jumpsuit, to add back some length to the crotch. I was also thinking about how that last top might look layered over a lightweight white blouse with poufy sleeves, so it could be worn in cooler weather, too.
When you are ready to make pants from scratch, I recommend the “top down, center out” fitting method. I’ve been sewing for many decades and have made many pants, but NOTHING has been easier or faster or more reliable than that method for fitting pants. Fitting pants is tricky, and all of the traditional methods and advice just made me want to take a nap. Top down, center out is the way to go, all day every day!
AND... If the material can no longer be used to sew into different shapes, you can turn the fabric into strips which can be knitted or crocheted into other usable items. Potholders, mug cozies or planter cozies, baskets, etc.
I'm a make-do-and-mend child. Not a sewist myself (cannot keep a sewing machine alive!) but I am a tinkerer, a tryer out, a fiddler, and a low-flying pest for innocent pieces of clothing otherwise minding their own business.
I cannot recall the last time I 'rehomed' anything!
I'll let stuff out by ripping the side seams and adding a strip of material. I'll lengthen by adding a false hem. I converted an old shirt into a ;granda' shirt by removing the flippy over bit of the collar. I removed the whole collar of something to lower the neckline. I tend to keep offcuts of something 'in case'. And usually find a use. I've even been known to alter knitted items by cutting them up the front and adding a binding.
I do knit (or did not so much now), so I could rip stuff back and reuse the wool, but I don't think I've ever done that!
One Christmas in my youth I had NO MONEY so I made little informal patchwork items out of irregula pieces of worn out jeans etc for my friends. They worked well. And looked great. .... so when are you going to get into patchwork. Just sayin' 😏
For the trousers, wouldn't it be easier to unpick the waistband you made and use another piece of material to make the inside of the waistband, that way you don't loose as much of the fabric, the waist will be higher, the pockets will be more accessible, the crotch lower.... saves you a lot of work! but also brilliant work!
+
Potentially, you could chop the sleeves of the brown, leopard print wrap dress, and add your own. Sleeves can be tricky, but that might make it a good sewing experience project.
Love this idea and I adore the Frankenstein top!!! In my city, there is a charity shop that donates all the clothes they don't or can't sell to emergency rooms at hospitals for people who need something to wear after they are discharged. Not sure how much of it gets used or if the patients throw the clothes away after, but another option to think of when getting rid of clothes.
Omg knew something wasnt right with that trash bin thumbnail! Thanks for this clever video!
The dress looks so much better with the sleeves! It's amazing! I also appreciate the inspo for what to sew with the clothes that I've grown out of but kept because of the fabric/memories.
Welcome to upcycling! I have so much fun taking items I have thrifted and remaking them into fun clothes. For one thing they are one-off and no one else is wearing them!
I love cheap thrift finds and making them look fantastic!
You can also make the ties on the top a little longer so they can wrap around to avoid a knot in you back.
the new year is absolutely 1st of september!!
What you do is so inspiring! Genuinely want to just sit down with my wardrobe and have a think right this second
My theory about dresses being "less versatile/wearable" is that women have moved away from wearing dresses as "everyday" staples so the general mentality is that even a casual tshirt dress is "dressing up." This has caused a decline in their wear vs tshirts are the new everyday staple.
This was my personal mentality once i hit puberty and took a few years to get out of in college. I now wear my dresses about as much as my pants. I have noticed that personally i find most skirts less wearable than pants, but recently figured out the specific type of skirts that work for me so that may change. I also find jumpsuits *way* less wearable than even dresses since it requires basically undressing to use the bathroom. I've only ever worn one though so maybe that isnt the case with all.
A note on your new pants: i would have added a new waistband rather than trying to move the crotch and pockets. I think a solid black waistband would have been a beautiful and simple addition to the set.
If you ever want to turn a jumpsuit into two pieces again, I recommend that you add fabric to the top for the elastic casing to avoid being stuck with a short crotch. If the pants need to be hemmed at least two inches and are wide legged, then you could use the fabric that you removed, cutting the two tubes to make a large circle for your waist.
The blue top!!! My dude!!! She's a triumph!!!
It will be easier to unstitch the elastic channel on those black trousers and then add a plain black waist band to house the elastic. It will save the pockets too!
Versatility is definitely something I think about when I buy new clothes now (second hand obvs), and it really helps prevent impulse purchases 😅
Absolutely frickin LOVED the twist here. You did an amazing job, my fave is actually the sleeves - they look fantastic, it’s like a new dress!
That dress upgrade was wonderful! I love it with the sleeves.
This is incredible Leena!! Something that always strikes me when I do a closet clean out is how many ratty old tshirts I have, but I know they’d never be resold and would go straight to landfill. A few weeks ago a saw a video on how to make yarn out of them and now have so much material for knitting and crocheting and would 1000% recommend doing that to repurpose them!! Just wanted to share for anyone else in the same predicament🥰
In the US it’s pretty difficult to find reliable clothes recycling outside of a big city. Usually you either have to pay for a company that sends a bag or you need to lug it to a city. Meaning a lot of people end up either putting clothes in the bin or taking them to a big donation center where they end up in the same place. It’s definitely something we need to add to our long list of things to work on.
I think with the dress usage thing is it's also a part of the way we westerners tend to think about wearing clothes in themselves. I love that the more I've gotten into sewing from japanese patterns the more I've understood about the possibilities of layering when your pieces are made with exactly that in mind. Having three very simple dresses but in different fabric and lengths (and bonus: two different necklines on each piece so you can flip it!) have become the staple starting point of an outfit dressed up or down with other clothing items and accessories like bows, flowers, shoes, bags, hats, scarfs and jewelery, when as usually before I started sewing I would really see dresses as a single use stand alone piece. I don't know why!
I love wearing my simple dresses with other dresses too! If it has a zipper or buttons going down or it's a wrap-style dress you can easily wear it as a duster on top of your tops and pants or skirts or get funky pattern clash-moments when you wear them on top of another dress!
I was thinking the same... a dress can be worn on its own, but also under a sweater or cardigan, or over leggings or pants, to change with the seasons, which would definitely help its sustainability factor. 😊
What a wonderful video. I hate how we're not accountable for our own clothing waste.
This was a great inspiration Leena ✨
Oh I love the sleeves on that dress! I definitely have some items that I was thinking about taking to a charity shop, but now you have me noodling on what I can maybe do with them instead (I am a novice sewist so they would be good to test on regardless.....)
Love how your upcycles turned out Leena! You could also make matching hair bands / bows or fabric bead necklaces with the leftovers! My main takeaway from the video : what the hell is a kneeling chair??!!
Maybe you could dabble in making detachable sleeves. That way you could add sleeve for winter and take them off when it’s warmer. You’d get double the wardrobe!
I used to volunteer sorting clothes at a thrift shop. We got so many donations that we were extremely picky about what we kept. The rest went into a huge box, to be recycled.
Leena you gave me a small heart attack with that leopard dungarees stunt! I thought No! Surely you can sew them, I've seen you talk about this exact scenario!!! 😂 buffoon, I am
Hahahah loved the twist, you really had me going there! I'm a professional costume maker and I felt myself going nooooo we can alter/repair them! There is hope! So it's great that you went for it xx
I LOVE the idea of buying the same fast fashion item to use the fabric for a DIY sewing project!! I have a similar problem with not liking sleeves of items, so I'm definitely copying that idea!
Hey Leena! About the traousers, you can pick up a black fabric from the fabric store that is similar to the garment, and make a waist out of it. another option (althought it can be uncomfortable to wear to some) is to use a wide elastic band, sewn to the trousers, directly.
I literally had a mend-a-thon the other day. I sewed up holes in old pieces of clothing I hadn’t worn in ages and ever tried to teach myself how to darn my socks!
I have put new pockets in my borthers yeans for the 3rd time
I LOVE that you altered the dress by buying another of the same dress so you had the same exact fabric to work with!!!
Reminds me of when I needed to replace my fav pajama shorts (I wore them to death) and I found the same exact ones on depop, except it wasn't even intentional! 😅
I have a big problem with throwing away clothes, to the point of hoarding 20 year old clothes that I haven't worn in 15... something that has really helped me recently is that now we have recycling bins for textile and shoes (used for insulation, cleaning rags and other ways), and also the Red Cross have donation bins.
The idea of buying a second version of the dress to alter your original dress is genius! I have a butting down from Zara that I love & I snagged a 2nd version of it that my brother was about to throw out but wasn’t really sure what to do with - I’m totally going to do the same with my OG shirt now!
My husband kept hulking out of button ups, which are a lovely smooth cotton that makes delightful napkins.
You could pop a sewing tack into the open channel through the elastic so (sew) the sewn end doesn't move through the channel and you need to recut the elastic if you need to change it.
You getting rid of the leopard yaks left me reeling 😵💫 but omg thank goodness you saved them! They are a Leena signature look!
Honestly this is one of the best videos you've ever made! And thats coming from aomeone who can't sew and is here for the books really! Lots of food for thought and maybe I need to get learning!
Also, the sleeves on the leopard print dress are 👌👌
The last top is amazing, it would be nice to put a topstich there to keep the inside from rolling out. THe fabrics are so great together! Lovin it!
So clever to get a second dress for the fabric. You saved two items, truly so clever.
this is really fascinating. I love the creative solutions you came up with and all the clothes looked far better after you had adjusted them to your personal liking. I would love to see future tips with additional clothing items.
option for making the face pants longer waisted, change the type of elastic to something okay being visible (solid black elastic is out there though it can be a pain to sew on) or add on a contrast waist band (maybe solid black or something fun)
Love love love this!! ❤❤❤️ This needs to be the way we all think about our stuff!!! The comments I've read lately about thrift prices being too high, or "i could get it cheaper at Walmart" are so disheartening. Thrift and repair/reimagine need to be more common, and this video is HUGELY inspirational because you make it seem doable and, more importantly, FUUUUUN!!! Thank you Leena!!! 🌎♥️🌎♥️🌎♥️🌎♥️🌎♥️
the only pieces that end up in my trash are worn/ stained/ ripped underwear, bras and socks. Shirts and pants become fabric, pockets to extend my current ones or pieces to be rebuilt. I have a lot of those right now since I have creatively been working on other things, but soon I will have more time and space to work on them as the cold comes in.
was anyone else super satisfied by the buzzer sound?
LOVE LOVE LOVE what you have done with these. I nearly cried when I thought you were going to get rid of the And Other Stories flirty dot/leopard wrap as you look amazing in brown. But WOW...looks even better with the new sleeves. Would never guess you werent an experienced seamstress. I've done the same thing if needed to add material to a dress, bought another one cheap
Ill send the last part of this video to my husband next time he is annoyed about the amount of clothes I keep to fix or convert in other things. Its not hoarding, I’m being responsible!! 😇
yes! i get the side eye and comments about a large pile i have to mend/alter make new... i have guilt when it gets tall but bliss when i get brand new items that i love from a day of fixing. very satisfying
Yesss! I have a few bins of future mends - I should label them Responsible Repairs/Reimaginations, to keep my husband off my case! 🌎♥️🌎♥️🌎♥️
All of these makes look so good! Your recent journey into sewing has got me eyeing the sewing machine gathering dust in my house 👀
same!
All of your garments are fabulous but, the wrap dress, genius
Use a all black fabric to do a waistband for the black trousers and you’ll get them higher and the pockets back!!
I love this! My favorite pieces of clothing are things I’ve modified heavily with sewing after I got tired of them or my style changed. I also tend to wear a lot of my clothes until they’re so worn that they’re not acceptable to donate, at which point I cut them up into strips and use them in place of cleaning rags or paper towels. So they do end up on the trash, just after a lot of good use and multiple transformations!
Everything about this video makes my seamstress soul so happy! Upcycling is one of my favourite things ever, and especially size adjustable upcycling. Thank you for using your platform to encourage people to be creative with their clothes 🙏❤️
For the pants, I agree about using another black fabric for the inside of the waistband to regain an inch or two of waist up. But if all fails, you can always unsew the legs and crotch, cut them straight and resew into a skirt !
Go off with the stats!! Amazing at spreading awareness of how much truly goes to landfill and polluting other countries
With the overalls with faces, I suggest adding material as a waist band and this should relieve the pocket and crotch issues. With adding sleeves, I have used a contrast material to add length, sleeves and collars or ruffles to make the additions look like design features.
Watching your sewing skills evolve and your upcycling level up as time goes on has been an absolute pleasure. Thank you for teaching me how to be more sustainable without all the glum feelings.
I've started going through my clothes before I donate them to make sure they're higher quality. The ones I donate are only ones I'm pretty sure will make it on the floor. Also, I usually donate them to a homeless shelter/mutual aid group in my area that gives them away to people who need them versus selling them to make money for themselves.
I know how to fix that!!! Undo the elastic channel & get some sacrificial black fabric to add at the waistband & sew the elastic channel from that then turn it in so you cant see the plain black xx
I have been unhappy with my 'underlayers"; the camisoles and t-shirts and longsleeves I wear underneath cardigans and sweaters. They're shapeless, boxy fits, crewnecks, plain jersey fabric... Lots of people like their boxy cotton crewneck tees, but I don't. My style is much more feminine than that. I have literally been in instances where I was too hot but didn't want to remove my sweater because what I was wearing was just too ugly lol. I looked on vinted for new lacy camisoles & longsleeves, but before I bought any of them I was like "hold up, I CAN SEW"
So I started changing the necklines and sleevelenghts, taking in, adding ruching and lace edges to jersey tees. I have started with black & light pink ebcause those colors lace I can find in local brick & mortar stores. I have "weird" colors as well for which finding the right color stretch lace will be a lot trickier.
Of course, the lace is new, but salvaging that old fabric is better than donating it or throwing it in a recycling bin because who knows where it will end up. Equally, the vinted girlies might spend the money they earn from me buying their random tops on brand new fast fashion, while I use my selling money (I am selling lots of things for very low prices because my style changed a lot recently) on lace or I keep the money on there to thrift.
This is actually GENIUS! I would have never thought of buying another dress to alter another item!
I usually sell my clothing at the consignment store I work at, but next time I might try this with something.
Thank you for the inspo x
Waw, miss girlll. I've been watching you for a couple years now. Religiously. I just had to leave a comment. I wanna boost the algorithm for this one. I really didn't know what I was getting into: great title 😂 so accurate.
I'm off to alter some sleeves now. You could say you've influenced me. I'm still at the very beginning of my sewing journey. A journey I would very likely not have started if it wasn't for you. Really grateful to be learning actually. I'm going to start an architecture degree in a couple weeks and I feel like learning to sew is one of the reasons I actually get to study this at THE uni of my choice.
The sleeves of the "flirty spot" dress and the quality of this video are similar. I'm amazed by the craftsmanship of both. Keep doing what you do. You
Most clothes who are really worn out due to use and having holes and stuff and are beyond repair in my household we use to clean stuff with and then eventually throw away. And some clothes get swapped between us if we don't like something or it doesn't fit anymore but someone else of us does.
You could turn the Monki trousers into a long skirt with POCKETS! Maybe a little slit up the side too
And the leftover fabric from those two tops you could make a little bandana/headscarf to match the outfit😅
I just put a well-loved (and too small) skirt in my donate pile. Now, I think I'll take it out and make it into a cute tank-top! So exciting! Thanks for the great repurposing ideas ❤
I truly love this video! I came here years ago for the book content an as a sewist myself I truly enjoy your sewing journey. Very impressed with all your beautifully altered items because I know it's actually a lot easier to make a new item of clothing from scratch than it is to alter an existing piece. Keep up the good work
Leena, do you have a sewing buddy? I know your viewers are really helpful in solving any and all sewing problems. But if you have someone to talk through projects in real time that really helps to find the easiest solutions. Actually one of my favourite parts of creative projects. Talking about the problems and finding new solutions. So i happily volunteer to be a sewing buddy 🙋🏻♀️
Maybe I need to find a group to join online 😅
