Brian, wow! Thanks for making this and thanks to Mike for sharing his rig. I stumbled upon a few pics of this one online before and have really been wanting to get a look at this. There's a LOT of inspiration packed into that rig! Looks like I've still got a lot more mods in my future on my BW. I've already done quite a bit and have been stewing on a few other ideas but this has got my brain-gears really turning. Nice!
It really got my wheels spinning too, it was really nice and practical when he was cooking. The best part was that they were great to hang out with, kicked it off like old friends. Thanks for watching!
That was so amazing. Lots of nice upgrades. Great to see him doing so much of his frame build out with the aluminum. So many great products on the market like the 80/20. I would have liked to have seen how he had his (custom?) Chinese diesel heater briefly case set up. Especially with the added fuel tank. We love our diesel heater! Thank you for taking the time to share. Really cool campers! Mark (& Teresa)
Hey guys, 80/20 is pretty sweet. Reminds me of the building games we played as kids. His homemade job on the Diesel heater was pretty slick too. He started with an Apache case, a cheaper pelican from harbor freight. It has a rubber gasket and boasts some waterproof IP rating. He cut, sealed, and screwed the inlets and outlets into the case and bought that gas can on Amazon. The can came with the filler spout with hose clamp and nipple. The whole thing was quite impressive. I’ll ask him to send more detail pics of the diesel pics build to share w ppl on email.

Super interesting to see such a thoughtful approach to mods. I’d love to know more about those awnings. Is he happy with them? How does the rear awning work out in the rain? Does improve the bushwhacker’s galley experience in inclement weather? Sure looks like it would.
He loves the Roam awnings, but mentioned that he got them bc the ARB was out of stock at the time. I have now seen both up close and would say they’re comparable, i’m really becoming a believer. The rear awning works very well and 100% improved the experience of the galley. He had to custom build a grid system across his roof rack in order to install it, also something I have to consider. The awnings come in two sizes, the ones on the sides of the trailer are the big ones and the one on the back is the small one.
@@DIYOutdoorLife you should have shown off your "copilot" as he/she was curled up on your arm....I ordered a teardrop last June, I'm picking it up tomorrow. I will try to record the event. First time video IF it makes it to UA-cam.
Good review on what it would take to invest a true kitchen into a stock FreeSolo I've seen for $12,900. Honestly, I don't get how the manufacturer just flaked out on what a starter teardrop kitchen should be. It's not like teardrops are a new thing in the camping community.
Great vid Brian... thanks. Any info on the front of the BW where it appears a conduit is being used.... for the solar wiring ?... and nice lighting in the galley.... stay healthy...
I appreciate this build, and perhaps I'm just a bit jealous since I don't have the skill with tools to accomplish this. But if I may be so bold, while the materials may have cost around $7k, I think the cost of Mike's labor should be factored in. Most people do not see their personal labor as a cost factor, but in reality your time has value. For me, I'd trade the money for the time. I'd rather spend an extra year traveling in something I bought than spending a year building something out. As always, it's about the trade-offs.
I really appreciate your take on this. I included a “sweat equity” comment on the video because his labor definitely needs to be included. On one hand, I understand a labor of love and how people enjoy the work. On the other hand, I often say the same things as you when people write me with, “I built my own camper for $8k…” If it takes you 1000 hours to do something, that certainly has a value… Thanks again for swinging by with great input!
