- Music is intrinsic to our everyday lives and is an art form filled with unique experiences and stories to tell, but how can music be used to describe highly subjective diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia in a broad sense? Join Max as he explores and analyses the popular album ‘Everywhere at the End of Time’ (with assistance from Dr Sandra Garrido of Western Sydney University), as well as touch upon the importance and value of music therapy on dementia patients.

I know it was framed as a joke, but it doesn't feel like one.
I cant imagine how depressing it must be to talk to either of your parents and just look at their face, and seeing that they no longer recognise you. That all memories have been burned up.

It nearly makes you cry on cue. Last Christmas, I made my grandma a garland to go around her door. Grandpa was in the later stages of dementia to where he had no idea who I was, grandma, dad, mom, anyone. He told me that I might be interested in meeting his son, my dad.
That's actually one of the saddest parts of all to me. Very often right before death, all your memories, all your family members, everything comes back in a flash, and right after, you die. It's like this disease is taunting you. Nothing was ever gone, it was just buried or locked away.
Imagine how these people were treated, back before anyone knew anything about brain disorders.
That is just awful to think about.
@Mdisk64 Considering asylums fit the definition of torture, it was a good thing we shut them down. That being said, the resulting intensity of already-inadequate care is a tragedy.
Makes me really scared for the person receiving said treatment cause they literally used to cut off parts of the brain to solve problems

i like anything that has to do with the mental state of a human being, it gets me curious about what specifically is happening in their head, Everywhere at the end of time is a clear example of one of those things im interested in (Nobody asked)

Also, how the person in stage 4 described his father is the right way to go about it. It's best to just play along with the dementia patient as it keeps them happy, help them "make up" a memory they've started talking about that you have no idea what it is. A morbid way to improve one's improv skills. :(

Personally, I would try to say a joke like "Well guess what? Congratulations! You ARE my father!" (I'm not trying to be offensive if I come off that way).

I saw all of these replies, and just wanted to say, you shouldn't feel rushed if you're anxious about it, especially if you're in a bad place mentally. This album does have a profound emotional effect on people, and can be really damaging if you're not ready for it. Just a word of advice, though, maybe watching a reaction or doing quiet activities while listening will help ease the stress of it just a little bit, I know that's what helped me. Anyways, best wishes, and hope that one day you can safely experience this important album 😊😊😊

My sister worked with dementia patients before she graduated college, and she texted me usually saying she disliked the patients. This album came out 2 days later, and I haven’t heard her complain since.

Gorgeous video. This album changed the way I look at the world forever, and helped me understand just how precious our ability to remember even the smallest things really is.
it's so interesting how you not only talked with somebody to learn more about dementia, but you took statements from people about their loved ones with dementia.
everywhere at the end of time is slowly becoming a special interest of mine so i'm digging for as much content as i possibly can, and this video is really really good :) very underrated! good job!

I'd like you to take a look about an album that this one inspired. They called it Everywhere in the Beginning of Nowhere and it's a bit longer. But it also feels a little more personal than EATEOT. There are more trips and slips than in EATEOT which I think makes sense because it's not always just a steady decline. You trip up and everything is fine when you get back up, but each time you get up a little less.
My uncle had dementia. I was there in the moment he died and for like the last 30 seconds he like unforgot my and my aunts name and hold our hands. Then he died

This is a good video, but there's some mistakes, usually with the track listing being labeled wrong (ex. "Libet delayed", it's actually "Libet delay", and voiding a song from Stage 4 and 5.

Yay! Another EATEOT video. I first heard the entire project five months ago and I'm obsessed.
I'm crying now, I don't want to feel this and I miss my grandparents as well as my parents who are very much there but I don't want them to experience this as well as my dog and brother.

Thank you so much for this video! I've been feeling very disturbed and distracted since listening to the Caretaker albums. Everytime I hear something that reminds me of it I feel dread but this video has brought light into it all! I've wanted to be a music therapist for a while now but can't afford it yet. The ending about how Music Therapy can help made me feel grateful that I'm a musician and that one day I can hopefully help other people! Thank you!!!

I finally got around to finishing this video (school can be annoying) and I'm so surprised that this only has around 9k views (as the time of my comment), as a commenter already stated before (and something similar I would say), this is so criminally underrated and I can tell that a lot of care was put into researching and understanding this album and its recent cultural impact.
All memes aside about the album, it is a truly heartbreaking but overall wonderful experience, nobody is "edgy" for liking the album, it is genuine art made for the intent of art, everyone should appreciate what it has done and I thoroughly enjoyed watching your interpretation on the album as I have only very recently finished watching the full thing, bravo.

I've listened to this album full-way through twice (as well as one attempt ending after stage 3). A lot of the music is very beautiful and packed with emotion and specific "atmospheres" if that makes sense. My favorite stage has always been stage 3. "Drifting Time Misplaced" is my absolute favorite track from this project. It creates a very strong mental image for me: Someone standing in front of a house on fire in the dead of a cold, winter night. The house is their childhood home. All they can do is stand there and watch it burn away as they recall old, faded memories from their time living there.

1. F7 Is Not *Libet Delayed* its only *Libet Delay* .
2. Theres 3 tracks in stage 4 called *Post Awareness Confusions* , not 2. this means theres 4 tracks on stage 4.
3. There are 2 tracks named *Advanced Plaque Entanglements* in stage 5. not one.

Aw man I love this! Thanks for bringing something new to the discussion table, too. Your perspective is very relatable and insightful. I've been meaning to check out that copycat work by the Carebear which is apparently really awesome, but idk. I spoiled myself in regards to EatEoT and I think the Carebear one has different twists and a different interpretation of everything based on his own personal experience. But yeah, didn't really get the full effects from listening to EatEoT for the first time, sadly

Who knows, maybe we can some day properly treat Alzheimer's, not just slow it down. I mean contracting HIV or developing certain forms of cancer are usually no immediate death sentences anymore, either. Of course, the HI virus won't leave your body and you still have to practice safe sex and avoid contaminated needles, and to lower your risk of cancer, you also need to avoid smoking and make healthy lifestyle choices in general, but you probably catch my drift. By exercising your memory you could also lower your risk of a memory disease developing early.

Inside Out by Odyssey is more devastating than this album a lot shorter, I feel more lonely, emptied out and bereft during Inside Out than Everywhere at the End of Time, especially as it's so beautifully sung and produced. The Caretaker made a monolithic album but I know I'd prefer to listen to Inside Out again.

Dementia aside, EATEOT is abstract and perplexing, somewhat in the way of the Codex Seraphinianus, a book of illustrations and text in some alien language. Its entire content, illustrations as well as text, is indecipherable and incomprehensible. The only thing you might get out of the Codex would be from your own imagination.
Strangely,the only song that made want to gouge my ears out in uncomfort and sadness was "Its just a burning memory",i seriously wont be able to sleep if you put it on near me,it hurts my ears in a..Good way?And its just painfully playing everywhere i go,i can never listen to that song.

the most horrifying part is that everyone around you is suffering from seeing you decline but you are completely unaware of whats going on. your grasp on reality slowly disappears.
nothing can stop it or cure it, all you can do is slow the progression. you dont just lose memory, your ability to do anything and personality degrade. seeing someone snap back into themselves for even a moment is a moment you will treasurs.

Because at that stage the patient doesnt talk, walk, is basicaly like a living corpse, a formal shell of what was the person, it doesnt know anything, it doesnt know what/who he is. The Patient is just an empty canvas.
