      Hi! I have a sweet potato still in my vegetable basket that has two green sprouts coming out the end, about two inches tall already. Do I cut the potato in half and try to bury everything but the leaves? I’m trying to figure out what to do. TIA!

    Potatoes do this eventually when they receive sufficient enough warmth and light. This only exposes potatoes to rot. If you bought your potatoes from a store there’s a huge chance they have been treated with inhibitors and that stops the sprouts for a while. This method, however, works for avocado seeds and SWEET potatoes.

      Idk, potatoes do this naturally yes, but it takes more like a couple of months. Granted these could of been about to grow anyways, we don't know. But even ones I have that are starting to grow I could test with and see which grow faster.

    Potatoes need to be planted in a deeper pot and more dirt added when they get a few inches tall like that. Keep adding dirt "hilling" them as they keep growing if you want potatoes to harvest.

    • @theurzamachine
      @theurzamachine 3 роки тому +1

      None of this is necessary. As long as the sprouts are growing, you have a viable potato. Plant it at least 6 inches deep into the ground and it's good to go and will give you at least some yield. Add fertilizer and hill (if necessary for that variety) and you will approach maximum yield.
