It’s quite obvious the Omani government grew weary of funding Oman Air’s losses and now the airline is in extreme cost cutting mode. Service and quality of food is down, and yet fares are so high that most of the time they’re not competitive. The airline currently under temporary management after firing most of the old regime and being run by a committee.
I’d say it’s the right call for the government to stop putting money into an endless pit, there was never room left in the Middle Eastern market anyways
Flew the same route but started in London. Huge contrast between the London-Oman route and the Oman-Bangkok one. The former had some of the best crew we’ve ever had. The latter, not so much. The food and seats were also vastly different. Seems they reserve the best for the more profitable route.
This happen frequently with middle eastern airlines. They use the South East Asian customer to funnel traffic to their hubs but treat that customer as an after product. So many other reviewers have encountered shocking flights from Bangkok, to Mumbai, to Vietnam and in between.
I like Oman as unlike many of the Gulf countries it doesn't try to be something it isn't.The spikey mountains around Muscat are amazing for an urban environment.
Really enjoy watching your flight videos Dan. I currently live in Muscat and have not used Oman Air for some years now. Since BA have seemingly given up their direct flights from MCT to LHR Oman Air have been charging like a raging bull for business class seats on this route. My allegiance is now firmly with Emirates even though this involves travelling via DXB. I find the Emirates A380 hard product and superior cabin service more than makes up for the inconvenience of a slightly longer trip. My preferred seat is also 25K! 😀
I agree with Dan, Oman's airport is my favourite airport in the middle east as well. Its vibes are grand but yet soothing and comfortable, washrooms are always clean, the signs aren't confusing and easy to navigate and the staff are friendly. Imo, It is way better than Qatar's HIA airport which is a huge mess to navigate around and the staff can be a hit or miss.
I found Doha aurport to be pure chaos. So many people everytime I went there. There was never enough seating for people. Felt stressed just walking there. I love Qatar Airways their cabins and food alot though.
DOH can be a catastrophe, especially if you are transiting during the rush hour around midnight, and have the pleasure of getting remote stands for both the incoming and outgoing flights. The interminable sighteeing tour around the airport can be a nightmare, complete with traffic jams, traffic lights, alternating one-way travel on single lane roads, luggage trains without proper lighting chugging along at a snail's pace, etc. Then the packed terminal has all the charm of a US inner city high school assembly hall on a really bad day. The pointless security checkpoint for transfer passengers is a disaster zone, and so forth, and so forth. And Qatar's Q-suites are overrated, in my opinion. I'll take Oman Air's business class seats any day.
100% agree Dan, I also flew from Paris via Muscat to Bangkok in Business class and the crew are extremely inconsistent. I note they were absolutely wonderful on my return however.
As always your honest appraisal is appreciated. So sad that the crew didn’t seem to understand that civility is paramount to superior experiences. It’s a shame the food was sparse and mediocre.
Mom just did Chennai-Cairo return via Muscat on Oman Air. I had suggested it to her after all the reviews on the internet (albeit focusing on Business Class). She said it was really not worth it, with terrible service, even getting a glass of water was a challenge, and the food was mediocre in Economy and the portions abysmal (and she really doesn't eat too much). Dunno if it's discrimination thing some Airlines have against Indians or what, but overall seemed quite different from the Avgeek UA-cam.
Honestly, several gulf airlines have a terrible economy class. Emirates is the worst scam of them all. They have shiny first class and business class seats (Emirates business class is shit though), but the general population in economy is seen as scum, I guess.
it could possibly be the route. i saw another comment saying that the service was excellent from point x to x, but was ‘terrible’ from point y to y. i honestly forgot the locations, but it does seem that they reserve their best service for popular/profitable routes.
You should fly Korean air next time. I flew their 747-8 on the upper deck from Seoul to Los Angeles (highly recommend row 18, you have 5 windows all to yourself). The lounge was spacious and not crowded, seat was also an apex suite but with more privacy. Food was great too!
Hey Dan! I’m in Charleston, SC and live suuuuuper close to the Boeing plant. Have you contacted them in regards to possibly getting a tour and seeing how the 787’s are constructed? Idk if you’d be able to necessarily film a *ton* of content, but the process is incredibly fascinating and I think you’d love a tour of the plant regardless. I see these planes while getting their final touches before being delivered and quite truly quite something.
Hi Dan, your experience contrasts markedly with my recent flights on Oman Air. I recently flew KL to LHR via Oman, returning CDG to KL. On all 4 flights service was top level and food sublime, perhaps it was the crew on your flight, Im also not a vegetarian so didnthave the same issues as you on food selection. Theyve also just reinstated the amenity kits with an awesome selection of Amouge product. I must say Oman Air Apex suite FTW!
I flew Oman Business Class last year KL - Muscat - Heathrow and the return trip a month later. I found the crew on all flights friendly and attentive and the meals enjoyable. I got amenity kits and pj's on an overnight flight. The seat is great especially the window seat, though I found the aisle seat too exposed. I also found the entertainment lacking and disappointing.
I flew from Sweden to Thailand on Oman air business class earlier this year, and I found it to be great a extremely great value for money. I did the same trip on Finnair just a few weeks ago and the experience was all in all better on Oman air. I will opt for Oman air on future travel,
And No problems w. Connections ect ? Im planning to do the same out of CPH. But with our family of four. But is a bit hesitant due to “fear” of eventual delays and 2 stops 😅
@@lausravnsted5116 On the way back I had a stop in Frankfurt and that airport is huuuge - and I had to take the train between terminals. Never made it to the lounge on that stop. I kind of prefer to break up the long leg of the trip into two flights with a bit of a legstretch in between.
@@lausravnsted5116 I've done that a number of times when FRA-MCT was still a morning flight. That entailed taking the first LH (not SK, thank God) flight from CPH, with a connection time of about 2 hrs. Doable, but very tight if you get a remote stand on arrival; take a bus tour of just about the entire airport; end up at Terminal 1; and have you make your way from there to a D or E gate in Terminal 2. Lots of fun when the Skyline is out of service. WY116 is now an evening flight (much to my regret, I prefer day flights), so there are several flights from CPH that will arrive early enough to give you plenty of time for your connection. WY116 also almost always departs FRA late. The schedule is well padded, though, so unless it leaves very late, it will make up for lost time and arrive on schedule, or even early. On the rare occasions that it does leave FRA on schedule, you may find yourself arriving at MCT almost an hour early. At MCT, Oman Air will keep outgoing flights waiting if there are enough connecting passengers arriving on a delayed inbound aircraft. The other week I flew to MUC, and that flight as well as ones to FRA and CDG were kept waiting for up to an hour for connecting passengers arriving on a late flight from HKT. Ended up arriving at MUC late (making up for lost time on westbound flights is hard given the jetstream), and I then had to make my way from Terminal 1 to the Terminal 2 Satellite (J,K & L gates).
