  • Andorra is snowing again so I decided to do a driving on snow or while it's snowing. It's not a lot of snow on the roads but it's still a bit dangerous when the snow plower hasn't been gone through clearing the road or the salt truck hadn't been out yet as but they are very prompt at their job so the roads are usually cleared by 10:00 and they keep on clearing the road while the snow is falling.
The most important thing is to have winter tires, even so my car was swaying a bit driving up to Pal, Arinsal and Arcalís. So if y'all are coming by car or rental car in winter, make sure y'all have winter tires on to be safe and the police do randomly check.

Hi! This year if my first time going to Andorra by car, I always went by bus... I'm from Lisbon so I don't know in what conditions should I put my chains xD, until 5:28 is there a situation were you would recommend putting on chains? The climb at 6:00 I think its clearly asking for chains in my case, correct?

Hi João! It will be a cool road trip and driving in Andorra is fun, at least for me.
In reference to winter tires, chains and socks, I think socks are better than chains. They are easier to put on and if they fall off, they won’t be as bad as chains laying around in the middle of the road. When do you put chains on? Way before 5:28 because you can’t stop the car on a narrow mountain road to put the chains on and you should also have them on before 6:00. The point here is that you don’t wait until you need it because you then will need maybe a parking or somewhere to stop to put chains on without being on the side of already narrow mountainous roads, someone might drive into you as they are too driving on snow ❄️ or you might hold up the traffic. There are many variables, what type of car you drive and the type of tires you got. When your car looses traction that’s when them chains should already have been on the tires.
As I said in the video, Andorra is pretty quick at clearing the snow on the roads, you just wait for them to clear and salt the roads first thing in the morning then you’ll be ok, they keep working on clearing the snow all day long if necessary. Now, if you drive up to the ski stations during or after a big snowfall then you should already have chains on before you start driving up the ski stations. One thing though, the police do check randomly for winter tires on cars as they did mine.
I hope this answers your questions. Take care and happy skiing ⛷️
      Emmanuelle
