Meet the African women reviving traditional religions - BBC Africa

- Africa is rich with a variety of traditional religions and spiritual belief systems. However during the colonial period missionaries spread Christianity throughout the continent, and suppressed many of these pre-existing belief systems.
Africans continued to follow their traditional belief, in smaller numbers than before, and these faiths still exist today.
Younger African people, particularly women, have found these religions and spiritual belief systems can help them learn more about their heritage and forge their own identities apart from the colonial legacy of the continent.
BBC Africa spoke to three practitioners of these belief systems, a sangoma, or faith healer, Amanda Gcabashe, an urban mystic, Mildred Otieno and an Orisha priestess IyalorisaOmitonade Ifawemimoas well as Professor Jacob Olupona, of Havard University, a leading expert in African indigenous religion

I am Cuban Puerto Rican and I am a priestess of Yemoja who we call Yemaya in Cuba. My whole family for two centuries outside of Africa has practiced this Yoruba religion which we call Santeria. Yoruba religion is huge in the African diaspora. It was preserved it in Brazil, Cuba Puerto Rico, Venezuela Colombia Mexico Peru all through Latin America and Trinidad. I am happy and proud to say that African spirituality is alive in well in Brasil especially in the city of Salvador capital of the state of Bahia. It is in our everyday life and used by everyone European or Afro descendants. ❤️🇧🇷
This is something l learned in college and it is wonderful to hear a Brazilian say it. There are tradional priests from Nigeria and Congo who are both delighted and saddened that there is more regard and practice of traditional form there, than in their home countries.

Comparing Ifa or Yoruba divination to Christianity is like comparing chess to checkers. One is so much more sophisticated and has elements of philosophy, mathematics and pharmacognosy while the other wants you to have faith in believing that a woman gave birth to the son of God without consummation. I can`t believe the world has fallen for this. It`s no wonder the Orisha and Ifa divination is the world's 4th largest religion. Without any wars, oppression or imposition on anyone by evangelization. It just makes sense.

Agbo, a herbal drink has been used to treat various ailments successfully. Where do you think pharmaceutical companies get their medicinal compounds from? Atropine from the atropa belladonna plant( deadly nightshade) . Quinine, morphine and 1000s of other meds were initial sourced this way before creating synthetic compounds to mimic these plants. Vaccinations were invented by the Yoruba, yes, a slave owner saw his slave inoculate his family against small pox by processing a scab of a sufferer’s lesion. The odu ( code)of the 401 orishas is interpreted by different binary combinations by a babalawo. You would likely refer to him as a witch doctor. Because your worldview has been shaped by western values you may have also inadvertently given them credit where it is not due. The lost wax method of artistry was being done in ile-ife while Europe where very rudimentary in their artistic expression. Iron ore bring was mined in by the Nok people before anywhere in Europe this was in 700 BC. You can look all these up.

In Uganda we now have Tondism faith which helps natives grow,strengthen their energy. And we have the healing capability.
Its amazing how each of us is born with supernatural energy which moves Mountains. Its high priest is called Jumba Aligawesa and the head of traditional medicine is Priestess Kulanama Kezia. Look for them you will be amazed.

I happy they addressed the fact that women had roles in the traditional African society, just as important as men. The victorian brought their background culture and we just ran with it. We’ve lost so much. We need to address what colonisation did to us on the continent to move forward
We africans are spiritual people I come from a spiritual family U can't run away from who U are. I'm saying this from my experience anything that is going to happen to me or people around me I see it in my dreams. In my family we are like that. Our spirituality is a way for Africa to go back to were we supposed to be.

Personally, I am agnostic. But it makes me so happy to see my people returning to the spiritual practices of our ancestors. Just as it should be.
With African spirituality, we had that special connection with the Supreme Being. We didn't need any medium or Saviour to reach Him. I am glad that Africans are gradually unlearning some of the stuffs that came with colonization and that we are gradually rediscovering our true identity.

I was talking to convince and fanatic Islamic brother, then a British join me, he was once a Catholic priest for 25 years, he was given scholarship to Study theology in Rome. But after 25 as Catholic priest, and he saw the lie of Christianity, the hidden secrets in Roman, the Sodomy and many terrible things, he told Pope that he living and going to his Country. He left, he he is 50 years never married, before. And he is on the way to rebuild his life back

As an AfricanAmerican I’m gonna be very curious about how they handle this. For the record, they mentioned “kings” but in many African ethnic groups queens did exist too. Mothers of the king or a sister of the king (sometimes a wife or prominent woman). Nubia was amazing (for many reasons), because within the matrilineal descent of their traditional religion, it was one of the only civilizations/cultures on earth where the queens had equal or near equal power to kings. One thing, I always believe in is that people should have access to facts about their ancestors religion & past. Not to blindly follow any religion, whether it be Christianity Islam Buddhism Hinduism or any religion, but to be educated about it. Africa is no different. Many of our ancestors beliefs and traditions were very progressive & healthy, while others were bad and ignorant, like anywhere else. It is the mark of a truly free people, to be able to differentiate between the two. Thus being able to learn from the bad and to continue the good. Example: Akan, Dinka, Yoruba, Ambundu, Fon, etc traditionally love “multiple-births” & their mothers. The Yoruba & Hausa had a long history of queens, & wealthy women of the market place etc. Mevungu celebration, Kudonza, & Kunyaza are different indigenous African traditions. But in short, they all celebrate the female clitoris & other mature organs of her womanhood. I mention this, because in some traditions in parts of Africa, FGM (which is not circumcision, by the way that is false equivalence) regardless of religion is still a problem. Either done as a foolish attempt at hygiene, or a deliberate method of misogynistic control, ensuring chastity, “wifey material”. You honor a woman’s womanhood, by removing it. 🤦🏾♂️ Such procedures make it far more likely for a woman to die from diseases, physical illness and experience deadly complications during birthing of their infants. In the past, certain African ethnic groups viewed “multiple births” as witchcraft or demonic infidelity (A superstition that probably arrived from the, deadly complications surrounding birth, especially in poorer states). There is bad & good, & both must be looked at critically by the next generations as to propel African descent people for a better future. Lastly, unlike Africa, the entirety of the Asia continent wasn't colonized by White-Christian nations. African religions like Native American religions were demonized, often through massive generalizations, exaggerations of a particular negative practice found amongst a specific group, & sometimes outright lied on. African religions are very diverse & that is without considering the different denominations amongst a particular faith. Black religions are the most misunderstood, but that too helped justify race-based-hereditary-slavery in South America, North America & the Caribbean. African-origin religions & denominations, don't get the research, structural or economic support that Abrahamic & Asian religions manage to get so easily. Even if a specific African religion is too outdated in its dogma, to be a viable modern-day faith, it can still be used as a valuable tool for philosophy & education much in the same way our Eurocentric education-systems teach of Greek stories, allegory, & pantheons. The African-chattel-diaspora & Africans have a right to take hold of our past good & bad, & steer our future. Our ancestors WEREN’T perfect, hence why they believed in god (most indigenous African religions seem to be monotheistic-with a pantheon of “super beings”)to begin with lol. They weren’t wrong in believing in GOD with a face that resembled their own.
PS: The belief that Africans were inherently evil for having the audacity to believe in a god that looks like them, was not only perpetuated by Christianity but also by Islam via the Arab enslavers of African peoples “zang” “abeed” etc.

Very informative, thank you. And Yes it differs slightly between Yoruba subethnic groups, like for example the Ondo were founded by a woman, but yes female Queens did exist and were highly revered. Yorùbá religion teaches us to respect women, to respect them for their powerful energy that creates life and also can avenge. (see the Ìyàmí Àjẹ́). Yorùbá religion teaches us in the Ọ̀sẹ́túrá chapter of our sacred corpus that everything we must have the support of women to build a successful society, and we must earn that support!

FGM and Male circumcision in Africa are rooted in specific spiritual beliefs. They are rooted in the conception of the creator God being intersex, that all are born intersex male & female and the circumcision is to remove an aspect of the opposite sex to cement the gender of the baby, child, person. This is the case in Ancient Nubia and Egypt with the worship of Amun and also similarly in other African ethnic groups like the Dogon.
I am not condoning FGM it needs to be stopped but I am just explaining its origins and the reason why its practiced. FGM and male circumcision are counterparts...
@@dugebuwembo , I disagree with this your 'theory' of the historical or cultural reason of this awful practise of FGM. I come from a part of Africa where FGM was prevalent until about 15-10 years ago when it was outlawed by the government. This however did not eliminate the practise, it simply went underground. There but for the grace of God and the defiant stance of my sisters, i would have fallen victim. The 'explanation' always given for such vile defiling of young women is purely to curtail or stop any hint of sexual exploration/curiosity or self arousal by young women as they are approaching puberty. It is nothing but denigrating of women and abuse for the sole purpose of control and subjugation!! In the case of male circumcision, the reason given across cultures and relgions is that it is for 'hygiene' purposes and also to 'enhance' the ability of men to mate and procreate successfully!!

paganism only means noncivilian or non roman . it had nothing to do with religion at first, then the biblical scribes started inserting the word pagan in the bible during king James relating to those who were not christian.

the truth is they lost the majority or their traditional beliefs just like pagans in Europe. That happened because the transferred information orally instead on writing it down.

The whole world is in a state of identity crisis.
But despite our identity crisis of what our cultural roots are, there's no doubt about the fact that we are humans.
Up to 50percent of africans still believe and practice this religion (mostly In secrecy of course) but profess Christianity public to avoid stigmatization and dehumanization .

I thought I had a conservative Christian mother, until I announced my first pregnancy and I saw a completely different side of her! She taught me so many traditional beliefs, preparations and African proverbs! I honestly didn’t think she even carried such known! Deep rooted African spirituality! Religion commonly refers to an institution that has a set of organized practices and a structured belief system shared by and among those who are members of the institution.
I’m sorry but I still can’t get over how ironic this is. It’s the fact that the BBC (“British” Broadcasting Corporation) is actually showcasing this when they - the British- actively colonized and demonized our cultures, (which is why very few of us practice indigenous religion/spirituality/way of being). It just doesn’t sit right with my spirit even though it’s BBC Africa.
And please when you put colonizers on there (on the screen in the video), NAME THEM!!! There should be full acknowledgment and accountability of the harms the British perpetuated.
I feel I am some kind of limbo with my spirituality. Recently, I am learning the tarot, have loved astrology for most of my adult life and skirted the edges of witchcraft, but would like to take that now to a much deeper, intentional, level. My family originates from the Caribbean, St. Lucia and Jamaica and I don't know of any links to Africa, I don't even know my family tree properly aside for maybe a connection to the Arawak Indian or Taino people, so the link to ancestors feels absent. I'm not in America where it seems slightly easier to find connections to other black spiritual/divinatory practitioners and in the UK, the craft seems to have a face not like mine. I don't mind practicing and learning alone, however, it would be nice to know there is a community in the UK that is there and welcoming to all would be learners. If anyone from the UK knows of one, I would appreciate a heads up! 💛

The first African Christians are in the book of ACTS some of the earliest churches are found in North Africa, Ethiopia, Sudan Egypt etc.

No. King of Aksum was converted by Frumentius a Greek priest. He adopted Christianity in the 4th century. It's YOU that need to do the research and stop spreading misinformation to other Africans using Ethiopia as the example. They were never Christian. I want to add an interesting note. In europe, in early christian times, many people practiced protective magics. They were not viewed as witches. People who spoke to evil spirits and worked to curse people were viewed as witches. However, as time progressed and the fear of witches spread and led to witch hunts, all forms of semi-magical practices started to be grouped under the demonizing umbrella term of witchcraft.
I didn't have a specific purpose for sharing this, I just find that fact very interesting.
I'm was interested in learning about pre-colonized African belief systems, but the first thing she mentions is that she uses tarot cards, which were invented in 15th century Italy and not used for divination until the 18th century--Further sad evidence that colonization has all but completely erased sub-Saharan religious tradition.
In reality African traditional religions never died in my country South Africa most people are still believing in this religion like me but most will say they are Christians while practicing African traditional religion at the same time

what is your roots. All of this boils down to our humanity. Have you wondered why many people pratcise christianity differently, the whites, the hispanics, the asians, the indigenous churches, some are loud, some reserved, some are linient some strict. There is no 2 billion people including indeginous tribes could be brain washed, this means christianity offered some thing no faith offered, it has no law except Christ. No physical leader but a spiritual one. No other faith offers such intimate relationship with God except christianity. There are tangible healings, manifestations of God's awesome presence, there is peace, thats why billions profess it and billions more come in, it has a personal touch. When i pray and commune with God, He is not a white God, He is not fragment of my imagination, He is real! His presence is real, His power is real. He can talk to all His children! His word is alive!

First of all, the concept of the devil does not exist within African spirituality. The worshipping of Abrahamic religion has brainwashed you on this; the binary of christianity/catholism keeps one on this flawed loop. There is nothing 'demonic' about African Traditional Spiritualities. However, there is something 'demonic' about being 'saved' and being seen as a 'sinner'.

If there is one thing that Africans should not have changed then it is their religion. Changing their religion meant they had nothing tangible to hold on. In the manner that the chinese are flooding Africa then they will come along with their religion. Yes... this is why most of the women were witches and very powerful. I never really liked Christianity because our ancestors didn't practice it and were just fine. I accepted my heritage as a witch and from the day I did.. let's just say my mind became more powerful. I never learnt how to make potions or cast spells it just came naturally.

I am a member of the Seereer ethnic group of Senegal and Gambia and I've always proudly practised Seereer spirituality (A fat Roog) all my life. I come from an ancient paternal and maternal family of practioners and priestly class (and royalty). I am orthodox and do not agree with syncretism. I am glad these ladies are practising but African spirituality never died.
I understand the need to rebel against white people and revive something that belongs to us. But even our ancestors would be shocked at this new age spirituality believes. Mildred is Kenyan and luo to be specific. Luos never worshiped ancestors we honoured them. Luos worshipped one God whom they referred to as "Obongo nyakalaga" meaning master of the universe or "Obongo were" king of Kings. There's a difference between a healer (jathieth) and ajuoga (witch doctor) I assume you are the latter because healers don't tap into spirituality. Coming to luo land look at how backward places associated with "juok" are places like Ugenya and Alego. People live in fear of their lives and property because neighbours or relatives can manipulate their destinies through divination. Even if our ancestors tapped into the spiritual world I'm sure it was done in a more careful way under the leadership of a few chosen people. You are just part of the "woke" generation practising borrowed ideas with your cards. And by the way this african spirituality thing sounds beautiful and interesting until blood sacrifice is involved, let's talk about people with albinism in Tanzania and ritual killing in Nigeria and South Africa.

Healers are spiritual. All beings are spiritual, consciously and unconsciously, aware and unaware, awaken and dreaming. Spirituality is your experiences with the material natural world and beyond this realm. No one can teach you spirituality. To say you are spiritual just means you are in tune with your inner self and guided from within.
The label “new age” is mostly used to discourage and belittle ancient knowledge and practices that were suppressed by slavery and colonialism in order to have power over Africans.
