- Had a great, but short time kayak fishing Depoe Bay for rockfish. I was with Louis, @pnwkayak , and Kaiu - who enjoyed his first trip out in the ocean in a kayak.

Tip: On my bottom/rock fishing rods I have 22” marked with red electrical tape and another piece at 12” just for reference. Thanks for sharing your trip.
PK I often wonder how miles you cover cruising with kayak battery motors on a typical fish trip. You're clothed/geared up like an astronaut. But you always catch good fish!!
You are correct about kelp. I got stuck in my sailboat over a kelp bed near the san Juan's.. i had to wait till high tide when it would thin out.

Ugly stick are definitely good, but for a rod that doesn't weigh as much I REALLY like Shimano Trevala. Used to be a $100 rod, but they discontinued them and re-released them as Trevala B for 2x the price. Because of course they did. The 6'6" M/H is hard to beat. Anything from rock fish to Tuna all on the same rod. Have caught a 65lb halibut on mine, it had zero issues with it.
